Bio:

U.D.O. is a German heavy metal band founded by lead singer Udo Dirkschneider in 1987.Starting with the first albums Animal House in 1987 and Mean Machine in 1988 U.D.O. proved to be pure heavy metal without any Trend-Sound influences. Both albums continued where Accept had left off in 1986 with Russian Roulette. Apart from Udo, Animal House was recorded by Peter Szigeti (guitars), Frank Rittel from Warlock on (bass), Mathias Dieth from Sinner and Gravestone (guitars) and Thomas Franke (drums). From 1987 - 1989 they toured with the following line-up: Udo Dirkschneider (vocals), Mathias Dieth (guitar), Andy Susemihl (guitar), Dieter Rubach (bass) and Thomas Franke (drums). They toured with Guns N' Roses, Lita Ford and Zodiac Mindwarp.By Mean Machine (released in 1988) the band had a different line-up: only Udo, Mathias Dieth and Andy Susemihl remained. New additions were Thomas Smuszynski (bass) and Stefan Schwarzmann (drums).U.D.O. achieved success with the album Faceless World, produced by ex-Accept drummer Stefan Kaufmann. U.D.O.'s follow-up album was Timebomb, and it was their last for five years.

Album:

25 years of U.D.O. is the perfect occasion for AFM RECORDS to re-release the whole back catalogue! Holy is the seventh studio album by German heavy metal band U.D.O. It was recorded and mixed by Stefan Kaufmann at Roxx Studio in Pulheim and is the band's first album with guitarist Igor Gianola, who had played with Ronni Le Tekrø in Wild Willy's Gang. The band recruited drummer Lorenzo Milani after the release of the album; in the liner notes "guess who" replaces the name of the drummer. All music is composed by Udo Dirkschneider and Stefan Kaufmann. In 1999, “Holy” marked the third U.D.O. album in as many years. Sparkling with creativity, the ex-ACCEPT grater voice Udo Dirkschneider and Co were more or less well on their way back then. While the quasi-combo album “Solid” was still dignified heavy fare with many memorable hits, a year later they pretty much hit the toilet with “No Limits”. Although nobody really expected it, “Holy” of all places should be a return to the old ACCEPT days. Under contract for the first time with Nuclear Blast and changed in two positions (on guitar Igor Gianola instead of Jürgen Graf, behind the kettles Lorenzo Milani instead of Stefan Schwarzmann), U.D.O. shortly before the turn of the millennium, there was actually another powerful liberation.Already the anthem-like title track at the beginning of the album promised - similar to a cover artwork that was finally to be taken seriously again - the desired concentration on the essentials: Striking riffs, the barking Halford / Johnson voice of Dirkschneider and an incredibly authentic 80s metal vibe . The hyper-input “Raiders Of Beyond” with its irresistible guitar solo and the crisp mid-tempo drum “Shout It Out” surpass the previous material by light years. Anyone who thinks that this would be a big mistake - “Thunder In The Tower”, the speed reel “Back Off” and the crisp “State Run Operation” are also still very skillfully wallowing in the Mid-80s Metal fairway still cause tears of joy among the target audience. There is actually not a single total failure on “Holy”, and even the more average songs (“Recall The Sin”, “Friends Will Be Friends”) cannot possibly be described as bad, as they are still uncompromisingly crisp despite their slight imperfections Spray UDO style. The regained self-confidence can be heard during the final “Cut Me Out” - such a rhythmic, at first sight strange song would have been U.D.O. a few months earlier probably not believed. Thus, “Holy” not only initiated a positive turnaround for the people of Wuppertal, but is still one of the best U.D.O. albums in various collections today.
