Bio:

Dead Of Night was formed in 2013 by composer Carl Eden as a vehicle for an album that he had in mind at the time. He quickly recruited singer Courtney Cecere and together they set about creating the bones of what would later become "The Dead Shall Rise". After recording three songs, it became apparent that a guitarist was needed to replace the programmed guitar parts and luckily, a friend of a friend introduced Carl to guitarist Hadian Gates. Hadian recorded stunning guitar parts for the songs and, together with Courtney’s smooth yet powerful multitracked vocals and Carl’s intricate orchestral and synth arrangements, the Dead of Night concept was complete. Work continued on the album in Carl’s home studio for the next nine months with Courtney and Hadian coming in to record their parts on a song-by-song basis. Carl would record drums, bass and some guide keyboards and then Hadian would flesh out the guitar parts. Once Courtney had recorded her vocals, Carl would build complex orchestral arrangements around what was already recorded. Finally, in June 2014, "The Dead Shall Rise" was self-released and quickly gathered some excellent reviews. Martin Howell of Power Play was extremely complimentary giving the album 8 Powerpoints and saying that Dead of Night had 'produced a stunning debut album full of songs that deserve to be heard live'. He then went on to say that the band should complete their line-up, go on the road and 'make a name for themselves'. The band hadn’t previously considered a live show, but this was something that Carl was now determined to work towards, however Courtney felt unable to move forward in this area due to other commitments and so she left the band in early 2015. There followed a long and sometimes painful struggle to find a replacement singer. A number of vocalists auditioned over the next few months but none had that Dead Of Night sound until, in September, Carl came across Briony Featon on a band personnel website. A journey to her hometown, Morecambe, an outstanding audition and Briony was recruited on the spot! Drummer Dave Gudgeon soon followed and by the end of 2015 Dead Of Night were ready for rehearsals. It was also decided that, to aim for a more unified experience, the band would re-record their first album with the new personnel under the title "The Dead Shall Rise Again". Their inaugural gig at The Railway Venue in Bolton was a huge success however, very soon afterwards Hadian decided to call it a day and, once again, the band was looking for a replacement. This eventually came in the shape of Dan Roberts, another denizen of Morecambe! At the same time, by chance, Carl came across bass player Jason Peacock and finally the line-up was complete ... or so they thought! Unfortunately Dave decided to part from the band in October 2016, which instead of raising concerns, encouraged our keyboardist 'Carl' to start a brand-new adventure as the bands drummer! Carl has previous drumming experience and has absolutely outstanding rhythmic ability, proving this was his rightful place all along! What happened with the keys, we hear you cry? Our merchandise/creative media organiser/designer has put her talented fingers to musical greatness and will be joining the rest of DON on stage as of January 2017! Dead Of Night's brand-new album, called "In Search Of Ancient Magic" will be self-released on February 24, 2017. Watch out for one of the UK's leading female-fronted symphonic rock bands!

Album:

DEAD OF NIGHT are a five piece Symphonic Rock / Metal band hailing from the North West of England in the UK. Following on from the two versions of their critically acclaimed debut release 'The Dead Shall Rise' the band are back with their upcoming new album 'In Search Of Ancient Magic' which will be unleashed on the 24th February, 2017.I've been looking forward, with anticipation, to hearing this release since Dead Of Night first announced that recording on their new album had begun. Would 'In Search Of Ancient Magic' live up to their outstanding debut 'The Dead Shall Rise' and most importantly of all, would i like it ? In short the answer is no, i don't like it ....... I LOVE IT !!!A sombre, spoken narrative and a dramatic intro lead us into the opener 'One Night Holy', before a drum roll kicks the track to life. A fast paced number with galloping bass lines, power chords, punchy drums, melodic keyboards and divine vocals from front women Briony Featon, who has an impressive set of pipes. The symphonic arrangements add to the aura and the choral voices compliment Briony's rising vocal in the catchy chorus to perfection. The title track 'In Search Of Ancient Magic' begins with mesmerising keyboards which drop away into the opening verse where Briony's captivating vocals are backed by light bass, drums and piano style keys before the intensity of music builds with guitar riffs, and the keys are back, into the tracks heavier, chorus section. A well constructed number with the keyboards creating an infectious melody that will stick in your head.Choral voices and vocal harmonies create the intro to 'I Will Go Down To The Sea' before giving way to driving bass, courtesy of Jason Peacock, chugging guitar, solid drum beats and commanding keyboards. Briony's vocals are controlled and powerful through the verses and chorus sections in this uptempo, punchy track that has a hook line that's as catchy as velcro and is guaranteed to get your heads nodding in appreciation. The pedal is kept firmly pressed to the metal for 'Child Of Wolves', another high octane number where guitar riffs, orchestrations, vocal harmonies and choral voices are the order of the day. The bass and drums provide a solid back bone, the keyboards take the lead role and Briony's vocals are rising and captivating. In a change to what has gone before we have 'Hiraeth', a stunning power ballad, a lighters in the air and bring a tear to your eye number. Light orchestrations and piano style keys provide the backing for Briony's vocals, she truly has the voice of angel and as the intensity of the music builds towards the end of the track her voice rises effortlessly with it. If i had to describe this song with just one word it would have to be, breathtaking. The pace is picked back up again with 'Michael Faraday', a tribute to the English scientist who's main discoveries were the principles underlying electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis .... well that's a first, a history lesson within a album review ;) The track itself is fast paced and quirky with some interesting electronic wizardry from the keyboards, courtesy of Carl and Isabel Eden, which is rather fitting considering the subject matter. Briony's vocals are spot on as is the musical accompaniment from the rest of the band. Another catchy, melodic number with a hook line to die for.Up next is 'If I would Be King', a mid tempo track that bares the Dead Of Night trademark sound which is upbeat, catchy and refreshing, like a breath of fresh air. The orchestral arrangements and the keyboards instil that feel good factor, the guitars, bass and drums provide the rock / metal elements and Briony's pitch perfect vocals are, for want of a better word, the icing on the cake. 'The Old Straight Track' is one of heavier numbers on the album with dramatic orchestrations, chunky guitar riffs and the keyboards adding a melodic edge. The bass and the drums hold a solid rhythm and the female vocals weave their magic. If i was forced to pick a favourite track from the album it would have to be 'The Might Of The Deep', for me it sums up what Dead Of Night are all about. Bombastic orchestrations fuse with driving bass lines, guitar riffs, solid drum beats and the keyboards to create an irresistible symphonic mix. The transition between the lighter and heavier sections are seamless and well executed. A fast paced number with some interesting, quirky vocal samples, Briony's voice is powerful, controlled and quite simply addictive, if this track doesn't move you and put a huge smile on your face, nothing ever will. I've heard a couple of versions of 'Across The East Riding' previously and i have to say the final album mix is the best by far. It's more uplifting, punchier and melodic due to the addition of extra keyboards and orchestral arrangements, there's a nice guitar solo, courtesy of Dan Roberts, around mid way which all make this brisk gallop across the Pennines even more enjoyable.Bringing proceedings to a close we have 'The Other Side Of The Rain', a beautiful power ballad which opens with the sounds of rolling thunder, the tinkling of piano style keys and light drums which accompany Briony's impeccable vocals which are quite simply outstanding. The intensity of the music builds into the chorus sections adding a dramatic, uplifting touch as does the sombre, spoken narrative towards the end of the track before distant, rolling thunder brings the curtain down on a fantastic album.'In Search Of Ancient Magic' contains eleven well written, produced and executed tracks which are a credit to all involved. A thoroughly enjoyable album featuring a myriad of symphonic delights, quality musicianship, orchestral arrangements and outstanding female vocals which, when all combined, certainly hit the spot. It's early days yet but have i just listened to my album of year, time will tell. If you are a fan of Symphonic Rock / Metal this album is definitely worthy of a place in your Cd collection so head on over to the bands website and pre order your copy now. Dead Of Night, take a bow, the plaudits are richly deserved. Highly Recommended Listening
