Bio:

Cloudscape (known as Doctor Weird until 2001) is a progressive metal band from Helsingborg,Sweden. Since formation the band have gone on to play at festivals such as ProgPower Europe in 2005, Sweden Rock Festival in 2006, ProgPower UK in 2007, and Bloodstock Open Air in 2008. So far they have released 3 full length albums, and 4 videos (two of them promoting songs from their latest release Global Drama).Cloudscape arose from a locally known band called Doctor Weird after it appeared at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2000, as well as playing many support slots to various Swedish acts, with a line-up of Micael Andersson (Vocals), Björn Eliasson (Guitars), Patrik Svärd (Guitars), Hans Persson (Bass) and Roger Landin (Drums). In 2002, the band signed a deal with Roasting House, a production and managedment company, to allow themselves to be heard in the music industry. During 2003, several demo reviews were published in different magazines and webzines, giving them increasing recognition in the underground metal scene. The band then entered a studio at "Roasting House" in Malmö, Sweden, in early May, and began recording their debut 12-track album, which would later be a self-titled release in late 2004 (Asia) and early 2005 (Europe). The band also filmed a video for the track "Under Fire". On 2 October, the band played a show at the indoor festival ProgPower Europe in Baarlo, Netherlands, marking the first concert played outside of Sweden. The recording for Cloudscape's 2nd full length album, Crimson Skies, began in January, and was completely mixed and mastered by the end of March. The album was released on 3 June 2006, with various concerts then played including a performance at the acclaimed Sweden Rock Festival, as well as various shows in the United States. The song "Will We Remain" features guest vocals from Nightwish vocalist Anette Olzon (vocalist of Alyson Avenue at the time), and the band's second music video was made for the song "Demon Tears" with Rainer Holmgren. In 2007 the band played at the ProgPower UK festival, and on 2 September, entered the Roasting House studio once again to begin recording the third album.Global Drama was released on 18 August (Europe) and 19 August (USA and Canada) 2008. Two promotional videos were made for the tracks "Cloak and Daggers", followed later by "Darkest Legacy". During the time between the release of both videos, the band also performed at Bloodstock Open Air for the first time on Saturday 16 August, on the festivals main stage. On August 22, Cloudscape performed live at the Prog Metal Fest in Oslo, Norway, though the band performed only as a quartet as guitarist Björn Eliasson felt unable to play due to injuries to his back/spine. In 2012 they released their 4th album 'New Era' and in 2014 they went on tour (February/March) in Europe with Royal Hunt. On this occasion they released a compilation album called Touring Europe With A Blast From The Past with songs from their 4 cd's and one new song. The cd was only sold at the concerts.

Album:

It’s been 4 years since this Swedish Progressive Power Metal band released their previous album, New Era, the longest gap in the bands career. With Patrik Svard (Guitar) and Micheal Andersson (vocals) still at the helm, they make their Dead End Exit debut with Voice of Reason. The album opens up with ‘A New Design’, with some chunky guitar and a fairly aggressive pace. Riding on some war like drums, we hit the chorus hard… and it’s a good one. Excellent vocals and with that ‘sing-a-long’ melody which can put a prog power band ahead of the pack. The tempo doesn’t let up for ‘Futurist Psycho’ and there is some excellent playing taking place. This is key in the genre and is what is expected by the fans.‘Don’t Close Your Eyes’, cranks up the melody an notch, without sacrificing the weight of the guitar. This gives Andersson a chance to stretch his vocal muscles and he does not disappoint, easily covering the full range. The song isn’t as instant as it’s predecessors, but I expect it will have more longevity because of it.‘All For Metal’ carries on the journey and is a more straight forward power metal track and wouldn’t be out of place on a Gamma Ray album. It’s a good track, but I prefer Cloudscape when they are airing on the prog side a little more.Cloudscape don’t do album title tracks… or rather didn’t, as ‘Voice of Reason’ is the starts off the second half of this opus. Coming in at almost 12 minutes, this is firmly sat in the progressive camp. A mid-tempo opus, with lots of space for each musician to impress. Majestic, Epic, lots of superlatives could apply to this track, but the bottom line is that it is this type of track that prog metal fans relish. The album closes with ‘Thunders of Extreme’ and ‘Needle In The Eye’ deliver the prog metal goods and we arrive at album closer ‘In Silence We Scream’, which is a mid tempo number that has a few hints of Queensrÿche in the mix. Vocal lines mingle in the chorus, creating some real depth to the piece. For me, this is one of the stand out tracks of the album, making the 10min track length simply fly by Overall Voice of Reason does not disappoint. If you like Cloudscape already, then you will be pleased with this latest release. If you are a fan of the genre, but not given the band a chance, then this is a good album to test them out. They have put in their dues, honed their craft and delivered a fine release.
