Bio:

The Tea Party was formed in 1990 by Jeff Martin, Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Burrows after a marathon jam session at the Cherry Beach Rehearsal Studios in Toronto. Each member had previously played together during their teenage years in a number of different bands in Windsor, Ontario, where they were originally from. They had decided to name their new group The Tea Party after the infamous hash sessions of famous Beat generation poets Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. The Tea Party released their eponymous debut album in 1991, distributing it through their own label Eternal Discs. The album drew influences from psychedelic rock and blues, and was produced by Martin; album production was something Martin would continue with for all of The Tea Party's albums, as a way of giving the band complete artistic control. In 1993 The Tea Party signed to EMI Music Canada and released their first major label recording, Splendor Solis. The band employed open tunings and goblet drums (Dumbek) to imitate Indian sounds, something they continued to employ throughout their career, while continuing in a blues influenced style. In 1994 the album released in Australia, with the single "Save Me" launching the band's career in the country. The band gained the support of national radio station Triple J, enabling the band's first tour, with "Save Me" becoming a staple of their setlists.

Album:

A cult legend in their native Canada and Australia, classic rockers THE TEA PARTY returns with an explosive new album; "The Ocean At The End", their first in a decade, finding the band refreshed for another rocking attack. It seems that there’s an absolute abundance of music from this acclaimed Canuck act, but perhaps the illusion of plenty is conjured up because the music itself covers so many styles.Right from the start with the song "The L.O.C." there’s no holding them back as Jeff Burrows delivers a bracing drum assault over a staccato, Led Zeppelin-like rhythm guitar sequence. The drums continue to dominate the album, as do the classic rock quotes.By track two, "The Black Sea", we’re back to the reflective, dark, mysterious, orchestral lyrics and beats this band is well known for. The instrumentation is urgent and rhythmic with great atmosphere."Cypher" again allows Burrows licence to drum his heart out and show us all how it’s done. Throw in the typical Tea Party guitar twang, mastered by Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Martin’s resonant words and you’ve got one beautifully crafted, classic fairy tale of a song. There’s something really interesting in every track, from the ‘Bowie-esque’ intro to "The 11th Hour", the electronic sounds of Gary Numan in "Submission" to the pure rock n’ roll energy in "The Cass Corridor"; surely there’s enough complexity for many listens and new discoveries each time. The most epic, 'orchestrated' track is "Water’s On Fire", and Tea Party fans of yore will be transported back to a time in the nineties when they still had hair or a waistline. You’ll not be disenchanted by the variety of instruments that have been dusted off and given a jolly good playing.Consider that Martin plays eleven, mainly stringed, instruments, Chatwood plays eleven instruments which are a combination of strings and percussion and Burrows plays five percussion instruments, you won’t be bored by any samey rock guitar riffs that come standard with your manufactured units. The Tea Party is one of those bands that always try to escape from the mould, if all served on a classic rock dish, they add exotic twists and turns which makes their music so enjoyable, far from ordinary."The Ocean At The End" is a really enjoyable record, elaborated yet rocking, and rich in arrangements, sonics and quite captivating lyrics.
