So who are De La Tierra (From/Of The Earth)? First off, we have Alex “El Animal” Gonzalez on the drums. Alex is largely recognized as one of the best drummers in Mexico, having played in the rock band Maná since the beginning of the 1980's (even before the name change). Performing the vocal duties, as well as the guitar, we have Andres Gimenez, Argentinian, who has two bands in his arsenal: Firstly, he founded A.N.I.M.A.L., a nu-metal band which has gathered some success. In 2005, however, he decided he needed more and the hard rock inspired D-Mente came to light. On the bass guitar, we have Sr. Flavio, from the extremely known latin rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillac, who's been around since 1986. So, you see, none of these guys are actually unknown and lack merit, they're just down into the Latin side of music, unbeknownst to so many of us. All of “De La Tierra” is laden with Andreas Kisser's signature groovy rhythm. Tracks like the opener “Somos Uno” (We Are One) starts in such a heavy Sepultura note, it's almost impossible not to recognize Kisser's band in it. His collaborative work with Gimenez also hits some nice spots here and there. They seem to have developed a good chemistry during De La Tierra's writing process (even though they were mostly through cybernetic connections, as stated by both in an interview to Rolling Stone Brazil). I am also pretty much convinced Andreas sings in some of the tracks, such as “San Asesino” (Saint Assassin) or “Chaman de Manaus”, which is also pretty interesting if you're a Sepultura fan. While Andres and Andreas can be seen as the mainmen of De La Tierra, it becomes very difficult to ignore Alex Gonzales' drumming routines. It takes a deaf man to not understand why this man is known as “El Animal” in Latin America. He has a vaste experience on his side, which has undoubtedly taught him a thing or two. However, another of my main complaints is how pitifully the bass fades into the background. Mind you, Sr. Flavio has his moments, like in the single “Maldita Historia” (Damned History), but generally he's just kind of there. I've heard him play and I know he's perfectly capable of doing a good job, so it is definitely a shame that, maybe due to the composing process, or maybe due to the mixing and production, he looses himself. One of the tracks in which this doesn't happen is the already mentioned “Chaman de Manaus”, and, really, that just makes it one of the best tracks in the album.
Line-Up:
Andrés Gimenez - Vocals, Guitar D-Mente, ex-ANIMAL
Andreas Kisser - Vocals, Guitar Roadrunner United, Sepultura, ex-Sexoturica, ex-Pestilence
