Bio:

Taking their name from the classic, Ronnie Dio-fronted Black Sabbath album, Mob Rules is a melodic power metal band formed in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, circa 1994, by ex-Van Blanc members Matthias Mineur (guitar) and Torsten Plorin (bass). After drafting vocalist Klaus Dirks and drummer Arved Mannott they began performing locally and demoing material for an independent EP, which in turn led to a record deal with Limb Music, and the 1999 release of the group's debut album, Savage Land, also featuring second guitarist Matthias Mineur. A keyboard player, Sascha Onnen, was then brought on board for 2000's Temple of Two Suns, and Mob Rules would continue to crank out albums like 2002's Hollowed Be Thy Name and 2004's Among the Gods (both on SPV), while performing their Iron Maiden-derived and largely thrash-free brand of kinetic metal on tours in support of Savatage, Company of Snakes, and others, across mainland Europe. Despite the reliable quality of these releases, however, Mob Rules never reached the higher echelons of the Euro-metal pyramid, and remain largely anonymous in America. And, by the release of 2006's Ethnolution A.D. album (featuring a 25-minute, multi-sectioned title track!), the band had lost both of its founding members, replacing them with guitarist Sven Lüdke and bassist Markus Brinkmann, but by all accounts planning to carry on henceforth with business as usual.

Album:

Mob Rules’ 20th anniversary boxed set, Timekeeper, will be out on October 13th within Europe, in Germany on October 10th, and in North America on October 28th."My Kingdom Come" was released in September as a digital single including bonus track worldwide. A limited physical version of the single is also available. While Mob Rules are currently taking a deep breath before preparing for their anniversary shows, the work on their ambitioned 20th anniversary boxed set, Timekeeper, was recently completed. The musicians are revealing bit by bit exciting details about the box.“Following an elaborate production, which was done in real team work, the result makes us both happy and proud,” comments keyboardist Jan Christian Halfbrodt. “Over the last twenty years, Mob Rules have accumulated lots of material and of course lots of ideas which we wanted to integrate into this boxed anniversary set, so at the end of the day it has turned into a 4-disc package including DVD. As a fan item, we feel it’s an absolute must!”The band have already given away that a number of renowned guests have contributed to Timekeeper, among them Udo Dirkschneider (U.D.O.), Amanda Somerville and Sascha Paeth (both Avantasia), Peavy Wagner (Rage), Michael Ehré (Gamma Ray), Herman Frank (Accept) and Bernhard Weiss, and the result of Mob Rules’ successful cooperation with the Axxis frontman can now be heard on a pre-release snippet.“With his musical biography, Bernhard is one of our role models, and we’re really excited about his vocal contribution on "Celebration Day",” Halfbrodt explains, thrilled at the great number of pre-orders for the limited box, which is numbered individually and by hand. The band have revealed initial details about this special package which consists of two CDs, a single and a live DVD.CD1 has Mob present the 15 most important songs from their previous eight releases, among them classics such as "Black Rain", "Hollowed Be Thy Name", "Astral Hand", "Rain Song" (Live) and "Cannibal Nation".CD2 is the fulfilment of the band members’ longstanding dream: “We’ve always wanted to invite guests to the studio who have been important to us and our development and who have become friends,” explains drummer Nikolas Fritz, referring to a long list of renowned musicians who have contributed to Timekeeper, among them Udo Dirkschneider (U.D.O.), Bernhard Weiß & Marco Wriedt (both Axxis), Amanda Somerville & Sascha Paeth (both Avantasia), Peavy Wagner (Rage), Michael Ehré (Gamma Ray), Herman Frank (Accept), Corvin Bahn (Uli Jon Roth, Saxon), Herbie Langhans (Sinbreed, Seventh Avenue), Stefan Lill (Vanden Plas) Chitral Somapala (ex-Firewind, Red Circuit) and Peter Knorn (Victory). These artists can be heard on newly recorded Mob Rules classics, the cover versions "Lights Out" (UFO) and "Run With The Wolf" (Rainbow) as well as two brand-new songs which Mob Rules composed exclusively for Timekeeper.“This boxed set reflects the band’s past, present and future,” comments Nikolas Fritz.Timekeeper is rounded off by a DVD featuring recordings from the 2011 Mob Rules performance at the Prog Power US festival in Atlanta/USA plus extensive bonus material.Nikolas Fritz: “Our fans kept asking about those film recordings, that’s why we have now had the material cut and its sound mixed. A great souvenir, also for ourselves.”Real eye-catchers are the cover artwork and 44-page booklet which are part of the elaborate box, featuring scores of photos from all phases of Mob Rules’ 20-year career, a special feature being the fact that each one of the limited boxes has been numbered individually by hand, making this boxed set a very special fan item.

Album:

For 10 months, the northern German band Mob Rules ensconced themselves in their studio, now they are set to present the results of their hard work: Tales From Beyond, the eighth studio recording by the group, impresses with a deeply melodic mix of progressive and power metal. A new lyric video for the track “On The Edge” can be found below. When it comes to their lyrics, Mob Rules continue to go their own unmistakable path, influenced by historic events and inspired by literature. The album will be available on March 18th on Steamhammer/SPV as Digipak (including one bonus track + poster), double colored vinyl LP and digital download. In addition, there will be an extra iTunes version including an additional exclusive bonus track called “Ghost Town”, which has also been newly recorded.Their powerful songs and haunting chorus parts have earned Mob Rules an excellent reputation over the past two decades both in their native country and abroad. Their anniversary boxed set Timekeeper, which arrived at the stores in October 2014, has been incontestable proof of the complexity and uniqueness of their material. Tales From Beyond sees an evolution of the band’s earthy and multi-faceted sound while the Celtic/British influences of their music have been honed even more finely. The current album is marked by a “new directness” which not only goes down well with Mob Rules’ own fans but will also win the group many a new metal fan. This applies all the more as Mob Rules entrusted the production of Tales From Beyond again to the tried and tested hands of sound engineer Markus Teske (Vanden Plas, Firewind, among others).April will see Mob Rules join Axel Rudi Pell as special guests on his extensive tour, presenting the songs from Tales From Beyond live for the first time.

Album:

The newest album from German Power Metal band MOB RULES is yet another solid addition to an already stellar discography. With solid riffs, powerful drumming, and epic keys the band has always put the power into their genre’s namesake. The first, and title track, is actually an intro; intro’s usually bore me but they are one of the few bands that pull them off. It is a symphonic track and appropriately grandiose. A great set up for the rest of the album.“Ghost of a Chance,” is a steady rocker that presents a basic idea of what the rest of the album will sound like. While it is a good track, I don’t find it to be the best on the album so if you heard this one already and liked it, then the rest will blow you away. The dueling melodic guitars are definitely a nice touch, showcasing the importance of new guitarist Sonke Janssen. “Shores Ahead,” is such a well done track. The opening riffs and melodic leads really add a classy touch and provide the perfect vehicle for Dirks’ soaring vocal attack. He has always been one of the best vocalists in Power Metal and he only gets better as the years go by.“Traveler in Time,” is a mini epic. Ominous keys, pounding bass drums, and Dirk’s vocals in an almost speaking tone begin the song before it kicks into high gear. The chorus is catchy and backed by a blanket of keys. Lead guitar and Fritz’s entertaining drums weave in and out of the song. The ending slows down a bit for clean keys to make an appearance before the album ends in a crash of thick riffs, keyboards that trail off into the night, and a crashing of cymbals. Two of the album’s best tracks come up soon after; “The Explorer,” and Revenant of the Sea,” both provide nonstop Power Metal enjoyment. “The Explorer,” is a straight forward rager of a track, especially in the drums and the guitar melody lines.“Revenant of the Sea,” spends the first part with clean guitars and light use of keys and drums, like sheet lighting blanketing the sky on a cool summer evening. The storm finally breaks wide open and the riffs are among the heaviest the band has written. The second half blends the clean sounds with the distortion before it blends into another heavy section with an emotional and melodic guitar solo. The final track, “My Sobriety Mind,” is a ballad and a wonderful way to close an otherwise heavy album. Dirks’ softer approach works perfectly with the female vocals (unfortunately, I’m not sure who it is) to create a touching song about dealing with loss and finding solace. HALFBRODT’s clean keys and symphonic portion go a long way in pulling these important emotions into a swirling mass of touching sound, as does the guitar solo. A stunning ballad.MOB RULES is one of the most consistent bands on the scene. Despite “Beast Reborn,” being their 9th full length album, they are not very well known compared to other bands in the genre and that is extremely unfortunate. Hopefully, this album finally gets them the recognition they so richly deserve. I can tell a lot of love went into this album and it really shows.

Album:

Germany. Spiritual home of power metal. Influenced by British classic rock of early to mid 80s (think Saxon, Iron Maiden et al), the scene started in mid 80s mid Europe and it’s come a long way since then. Mob Rules, formed in Germany in the mid 90s as a quartet, soon became a five piece and following their 1999 debut, a six piece. And they remain proof that two guitars with keyboards work in classic metal. After 9 studio albums, a best ff and the 2005 live album ‘Signs Of The Times’, we get a second full live set, recorded on the Beast Reborn tour.A solid intro sees the band take stage and the crowd roar, and opener ‘Ghost Of A Chance’ sees some strong clean cut vocals, plenty of fast guitar and some intricate keyboards (just audible in the mix), and some standout guitar solos. ‘Somerled ‘has a darker and chunkier feel, the band still tight as ever. “Are you ready for some heavy metal?” Well yes of course, there’s many a cliché delivered, but that’s no bad thing, it’s what we go to gigs for sometimes. ‘Black Rain’ is a solid track, the keyboards adding an orchestrated gothic edge in places. It’s nice to get some chat between songs, as any good frontman does.Founder member and vocalist Klaus Dirks sings his heart out, and guitarists Florian Dyszbalis and Sven Ludke work well together. The band are completed by bassist Markus Brinkamnn, drummer Nikolas Fritz and keyboard player Jan Christian Halfbrodt. And they sound very well rehearsed here.‘Hollowed Be Thy Name’ is always a good track, great riff, and ‘Way Back Home’ gets the crowd clapping along. The music is there, so is the energy and the performance, but at 75 minutes it could be longer, and not much in the way of extended arrangements. Even so, Mob Rules have always been good entertainment.
