Bio:

IMPERIA is an atmospheric metal band who’s sound is especially evident by the distinguished voice of Helena Iren Michaelsen who sings in a variety of styles from deep emotional feelings to extreme operatic expressions and grunts.IMPERIA’s music is full of vivacity, it is heavy, bombastic and orchestral, but it also contains elements of pure metal. The band is a true cross-border unit of musicians originating from different countries: Norway, Finland, Germany and Belgium. The first release of IMPERIA was a cover-song “Lotus Eaters” for a Dead Can Dance tribute album which was released in the spring of 2004. In the summer of 2004 IMPERIA played their first gigs and also recorded their debut album “The Ancient Dance of Qetesh”, which was released in autumn of 2004.In 2005 the band recorded another project of Helena called Angel. The album “A Woman’s Diary – Chapter I” was released by Black Lotus Records in the spring of 2005. Though the style of the album was very varied and less metal the band succeeded to demonstrate their versatility and musicianship.Towards the end of 2005 IMPERIA had written enough new material for the second full length. The band teamed up with the German Massacre Records. The second IMPERIA album was titled as “Queen of Light” and it was released in the early 2007.To support the album IMPERIA toured European festivals like TUSKA in Finland, Battle Of Metal in Germany and Magic Circle Festival II in Germany. Imperia was also featured on the MCM festival DVD with two live-tracks.In the autumn of 2010 IMPERIA started recording their third album titled as “Secret Passion”. The recordings took place in different studios and countries this time. “Secret Passion” was released in 2011 and it received excellent reviews in the metal press. The band played gigs in several countries and festivals like Metal Female Voices XI in Belgium and Magic Circle Festival in Helsinki. In 2014 preparations of the next album started to take place. In April 2015 IMPERIA entered the Spacelab studio in Germany once more and recorded 13 tracks for the new album. The title “Tears Of Silence” was chosen as a title for the new album. This time band went for a more straight forward approach with the song material. The songs are straight epic metal songs combined with folk-elements, huge orchestrations and very varied. You can also hear a lot of acoustic instruments next to traditional metal this time. There are flutes and whistles, bagpipes, bozouki, acoustic guitars, violins and also a Russian choir on the album. Vocal-wise Helena goes beyond the usual and you can even hear heavy grunts on some songs. The album is full of emotions and musical styles, a true musical adventure!

Album:

Imperia are a band that I found to be quite interesting. I actually liked their last album so much that I felt the need to review this too. Reviewer ratings are lower, but they're by different people so it's hard to judge the true value of this album when placed side-by-side with Queen of Light. My opinion at any rate is that this album is woefully underrated, and it therefore falls to me to present it in a good light. The first track really makes an impression on me. It gives more than the last album does, throws more at achieving an epic performance. The guitars are heavier and more prominent, the vocals even better than last time around. It doesn't sound like a big change, but coupled with the catchy nature of the song they really impress me. I was worried that maybe Touch of Your Hand might just be a one-off, but those elements continue for the whole album. There are softer moments as well (much of the title track is slow and light, for example, as is Hold On), but whenever the guitars are there they generate a much heavier feeling than they did on the last album. The drums are also more noticeable, and even if the keyboards are left more to sit back and watch I find myself enthralled. This is really what I wanted to hear, and it delivers everything I could have asked for. The melodies aren't sacrificed at all, they're just created in a different way, a way that I personally find to be more entertaining.Who cares if this is an hour long, I don't want to miss out on any of those sixty minutes. Nothing is worth missing or better left out of the mix, it is all completely compelling. Even the weird witchy vocals that would usually be off-putting featured in Suicide are done to a very high standard and they are indeed likable. Admittedly I'd rather the operatic vocals and the plain ones Helena uses across the rest of the album were present here too, but a bit of variety never killed anyone. Besides, they seem to be some sort of trademark for her.For those that care about the lyrics above all else, you may be disappointed. They're a bit cheesy and unoriginal on more than one occasion, but I can't say that I care about what Helena's singing when she does it as well as she does. Her voice is seriously spellbinding, she could probably sing me into jumping off of a cliff if she did it like she does on Secret Passion.Reproducing something to rival this would not be easy by any means, but Imperia have it in them to do it. How on Earth this album merited such low scores is beyond me, but I think it might well be the best gothic metal album I've ever heard.

Album:

Imperia's new album "Flames Of Eternity" will be released via Massacre Records! The album was mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios and is graced by artwork created by Jan Yrlund of Darkgrove Design himself. The songs on the album will take you on an intense ride through all different kinds of human emotions. Guest musicians include Oliver Philipps of Everon, original Imperia guitarist John Stam and Finnish violin virtuoso Henrik Perelló.It has been a long wait but Imperia finally return with their new album ‘Flames Of Eternity’.This latest Gothic Metal release represents the bands fifth full length album, and the first since 2015’s ‘Tears Of Silence’. Straight away, this record hits you as being one of pure quality, as the opening chords of ‘Scarred Soul’ kick in, the general theme of the album is set, one of grandiose Symphonic Metal in all its glory. Helena Iren Michaelsen has one of those instantly recognisable voices, harnessing such power and purpose, and yet displaying a level of finesse and beauty that few others in the genre can match. The unbelievably catchy ’Fear Is An Illusion’ sounds just immense, delivering all that anyone could want, soaring melodic riffs, clean and growl vocal deliveries, and a pure get up and dance vibe. The album has its diverse moments as well, the hauntingly beautiful ’Invisible Tears’ overflows with emotion and passion, the addition of a string section lifting the track to new levels. ’Otherside’ is just a pure delight, operatic passages mixed with a killer riff that ticks all the boxes. ’My Guardian Angel’, again with a really hard hitting riff, brings a slightly darker edge to the album. Whilst the Cd Digipak version closes with a sublime piano rendition of ’Mother’, which was simply faultless. All the above contributing to make this record a great overall package. The production deserves a huge pat on the back here as well, Jan Yrlund and Oliver Philipps delivering an excellent job, creating a hugely professional finish to a highly enjoyable album. If you revel in the whole Gothic/Symphonic/Female Vocal side of Metal, then ’Flames Of Eternity’ is an album that you will instantly fall in love with, and easily becomes Imperia’s strongest release to date

Album:

IMPERIA is a Symphonic Metal band from various parts of Europe including Germany, Finland, Norway and Belgium. The creation of the band is a doozy, two one of the founding members of this band were supposed to join SAHARA DUST, the band that would become EPICA. In all actuality, former drummer Steve Wolz and actual female vocalist Helena Michaelsen were supposed to be integral part of that band. Well it turns out that they were replaced by Simone Simons and Jeroen Simons before anything was recorded. So IMPERIA was formed back in 2003 and this is their 6th full-length album and first since 2019’s ‘’Flames of Eternity’’. Steve Wolz recruited Helena Iren Michaelsen after her stint as the Contralto Female Vocalist for the widely known Gothic Metal band, TRAIL OF TEARS. Even though the joining of SAHARA DUST failed to materialize, they decided to form their own band back in the Netherlands. One thing you can obviously say is that since 2003, they have had pretty much the same lineup and that’s not something you see too much nowadays. The four core members have been together for over 15 years…This is a prime example of a band that tries a bit too hard to resemble other bands in the genre. The structure is eerily similar to bands like the aforementioned EPICA or early WITHIN TEMPTATION. They don’t try to distinguish themselves from other bands out there and the contrast and complex structure of songs just falls flat. You have absolutely a great female vocalist that has the range and power but the balance between the more operatic vocals and the more traditional vocals is chaotic at best. The album is very accessible and it has some pretty catchy songs but all I can say is that most of the album is interchangeable. There is no rhyme or reason at times and all the songs seems to mold into one mediocre song. I think the fact that you don’t have dual vocalists may hurt the overall effectiveness of the songs. You only have operatic vocals about 80% of the time and it can get on the nerves and pretty quicky as I might add. If you had maybe that contrast with growls, it would made a world of difference. The album creates a mood and a nice atmosphere but it’s not something we haven’t heard before.I am not knocking the quality of the musicians at hand, Helena has a wonderful voice and I can see why she would have made a great choice as female vocalist for SAHARA DUST and you have some very capable musicians. I felt the whole album missed the boat and it seems to start off pretty solidly and then all songs seems to be the same structure. The ballads and slower songs are probably the best part of the album but the variety is a bit meaningless if the music lacks some serious substance and quality. They try to sound so much like the bands that are reigning on top of that genre and they kinda forgot who they were really. The album is a carbon copy, paint by numbers attempt at a Symphonic Metal album. It lacks that fire in the belly, I mean it’s not bad but it’s not overly good anyhow. It’s like a middle of the road album, something you listen one time and you put back in the drawer. The lack of homogeneity hurts the overall essence of the album and unfortunately the progressions and melodies are extremely predictable. It’s fine for what it is but you have so many better bands in the genre to sink your teeth in.

Album:

7th album by symphonic metal band Imperia...release Date, Jul 26, 2024.Helena Iren Michaelsen, the former Trail of Tears singer, and her men once again transport their listeners into a fascinating world of sound. The "Dark Paradise" album by IMPERIA is a continuation of the musical style established in their previous release, "The Last Horizon".The core of the album revolves around mid-tempo rock songs, some leaning towards a heavier sound while others adopt a poppier approach. Additionally, two power ballads are included in the album, adding depth to the overall composition. The album is characterized by its emphasis on guitars and orchestral elements.Helena's vocals shine as she effortlessly transitions between operatic highs and brutal grunts, showcasing her versatility as a vocalist. The album's themes reflect the somber tone of the times we live in, yet it manages to infuse moments of hope and illumination. Despite its concise length, "Dark Paradise" is a cohesive body of work, seamlessly blending symphonic and rock elements into a unified musical experience. While the album takes a step back from the more extravagant progressive elements of their past releases, it remains true to IMPERIA's signature symphonic and rocking style. As the band celebrates their 20th anniversary with their seventh full-length album, "Dark Paradise" stands as a testament to their evolution and enduring commitment to their unique sound. The collaboration between IMPERIA and Jacob Hansen for mixing guarantees a high-quality sound, given Hansen's reputation for excellence in his field. Meanwhile, the band's guitarist, Jan Yrlund, brings his artistic vision to the forefront, ensuring that the visual aspect of the album matches the depth and complexity of the music. With this collaborative effort, "Dark Paradise" is poised to deliver both sonically and visually, promising a captivating experience for fans of IMPERIA's music
