Dark Moor was formed in 1993 in Madrid, Spain, and recorded their debut album, Shadowland, in the summer of 1999. Dark Moor played live supporting Demons and Wizards on their Spanish tour.Dark Moor began the recording sessions for their second album, The Hall of the Olden Dreams, in August 2000 at New Sin Studios with producer Luigi Stefanini. During these recording sessions, the band recorded their cover of "Halloween", which was included on the CD The Keepers of Jericho part I - A Tribute to Helloween (Arise Records).Their E.P. The Fall of Melnibone was released in June 2001. This E.P was a limited edition; 1500 copies were released and only for the Spanish market.Dark Moor began the recording of their third album, The Gates of Oblivion, in Autumn 2001 at New Sin Studios. Dark Moor signed with the major label JVC for the Asian release. The band played 18 gigs at festivals such as Rock Machina, Viña Rock and Nit De Reis. After the first part of the tour, keyboardist Roberto Peña left the band and they were forced to finish the tour with a guest musician. In August 2003 Dark Moor recorded four new exclusive acoustic tracks along with a string quartet, to be included in Between Light and Darkness, which was released in April 2003. Due to differing points of view regarding the musical direction for the next Dark Moor album, vocalist Elisa Martin, guitarist Albert Maroto and drummer Jorge Sáez decided to leave Dark Moor to start a new band. The two remaining members of the band decided to start a search for new members. After the auditions, they accepted vocalist Alfred Romero, guitarist Jose Garrido, and drummer Andy C.In August 2003, the band started recording their fourth album, Dark Moor, at New Sin Studios in Italy. Following a month of recording sessions, the album was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios. On 23 November 2006, the band announced the departure of their drummer on their official website, due to "incompatibility with his other musical projects." He would go on to play drums for Saratoga. His replacement, Roberto Cappa, was previously in the Spanish metal band Anima Sola.In January 2009, their seventh album Autumnal was released. The band made an announcement on their website, dated 4 June 2010, that their eighth album is in the works. It will feature Berenice Musa as a guest vocalist. The album is titled Ancestral Romance and it was released in November 2010.On 18 June 2013 the band released their ninth album Ars Musica, with the Japanese limited version including a bonus CD with five bonus tracks. They toured Mexico and Asia the same year, as well as few dates in Europe in 2014 to support the new album. The band started recording their 10th studio album, Project X, on 27 July 2015. The release is scheduled for November 6th, 2015 on Scarlet Records. It will be the first album featuring new bass player Ricardo Moreno who joined the band in February 2015. The band published the artwork and tracklist for this album on September 21st, and revealed their new logo at the same time.

Album:

Dark Moor is the fourth full-length album of the Spanish power metal band Dark Moor.Shortly before releasing The Gates of Oblivion, the band announced their split. Due to musical differences, Elisa C. Martín, Albert Maroto and Jorge Saez left the band, and formed Dreamaker. Enrik Garcia and Anan Kaddouri remained with Dark Moor. Alfred Romero joined the band as the new lead singer. Jose Garrido (guitars) joined shortly after, followed by Andy C. on the drums. They traveled to Italy to record Dark Moor.No one ever said changing vocalists was easy, especially when you're one of the most well-known melodic metal bands of not only your home-country but, also, of the whole scene in general; indeed, after Elisa's departure, Dark Moor was in quite a tough spot regarding fan satisfaction (amidst other things), that's for sure, and there's no doubt that the pressure was on ten-fold for their debut album with Mr. Alfred Romero behind the mic. Aye, it's a story we know thesedays, as the band's self-titled record came out a good seven years ago and, with three additional albums under their belt with Alfred on vocals (all of them quite masterful, by the way), it's undoubtedly a transition that worked, however, such success does not (or shouldn't, at any rate) cast a shadow upon the band's "nova era" and, as I see it, Dark Moor's self-titled effort is, by far, their most underrated album.Outside of the obvious change in vocalists, the band decided to progress their sound into a slightly heavier, moodier, more orchestral (in the film-score sense), less neo-classicalish direction which, for me personally, was okay since, as I see it, no one can take away the brilliance of albums like The Hall Of The Olden Dreams or The Gates Of Oblivion and, frankly, if Dark Moor were STILL releasing albums identical to those two, well, they probably would have inevitably lost their touch by now. Nevertheless, the band shifted gears a bit, opening up a new chapter whilst closing another and, as to be expected, the reactions were mixed, which is where I pleasantly come in with my own two-cents of the whole affair: bloody awesome!A Life For Revenge, perhaps the album's "safest" track (sounding the most reminiscent of old Dark Moor, whilst still breathing heavily the breaths of fresh air), opens the album as a total victor, showcasing Alfred's dominant vocal capabilities as well as, to be expected, Mr. Garcia's undoubtable compositional abilities. All-in-all, a great opener to swiftly and successfully bring in the winds of change. Other highlights include The Bane Of Daninsky, the album's third number, which features a prominent gothic/horror-esque atmosphere that is a total win in every regard; the juxtaposition of heavy guitars and rhythms with atmospheric keyboards works extremely, extremely well here, and once again is more-than-noteworthy evidence of the band's brilliant arrangement capabilities. From Hell is a very strong, catchy and melodic number with an awesome harp-synth throughout the verses that, to these ears, is quite magical. The Attila saga (being broken-up into five magnificent parts), Philip The Second and Cyrano Of Bergerac are all grandiose and epic, adding profoundly to the album's depth and quality, however, the crowning jewel upon the diadem is ..The Dark Moor! - what a song, friends! - aye, a song mighty enough to warrant its own paragraph, indeed. As is to be expected from a song named after the band itself, a certain degree of both quality and definition is to be expected and, with this particular track, the band truly have outdone themselves, crafting what is EASILY one of their best songs, right along-side the likes of Nevermore, The Silver Key, Maid Of Orleans, Dies Irae and so on and so forth whilst, in essence, perhaps even eclipsing all of the aforementioned tracks (though such a claim widely depends upon one's individual taste, of course). Beginning with a sort of classical movement that is almost waltz-like and quite gothic in the classic, literary-sort-of sense, the band immediately transports the listener to a darkened fairytale world, utilizing all sorts of orchestrations and choral-arrangements along the way. The heart of the song is, of course, not so much the brilliant orchestrations or the powerful riffs but, rather, the arrangement and composition itself which is, as made quite apparent by now, completely magnificent and moody within all its splendor and bravado! ... yup, a totally genius song that is better heard than read about, certainly.All-in-all, both Dark Moor and their namesake album are first-rate examples of power metal and, despite the obstacles that the band was up against at the time of the album's release, they undoubtedly conquered without changing but, rather, progressing (there's a BIG difference between the two); the band never sounded so unified up until this point into their career and, with Beyond The Sea, Tarot and, most recently, Autumnal now under their belt with Alfred, Dark Moor are truly stronger than ever. Highly, highly recommended to fans of Dark Moor, power metal and, as to those who have never heard these fellows before but are interested in doing so, a perfect starting point for it's the transition from the old to the new, thus showcasing elements from both eras quite splendidly; brilliant!

Album:

Ars Musica is the ninth full-length album by the Spanish power metal band Dark Moor, released on 18 June 2013.Dark Moor has, for whatever reasons that affect a band’s demographics, flown under the radars of the power metal scanning systems for years. Their efforts, often compared to the likes of Rhapsody of Fire and Blind Guardian, are mostly fresh, riveting pieces of fantastic power metal—the kind of stuff that imprisons your mind and soul whenever they’re given the chance to do so. I’m not going to make any rash comparisons between “Ars Musica” and Dark Moor’s other albums as I’m not horribly familiar with the bulk of them, but I will say “Ars Musica” is overall outstanding. Dark Moor’s efforts are as elegant as they are magnetic; gushing with songs that are confident, daring, catchy, and pristine, yet showing a degree of boldness that doesn’t transcend into ridiculousness or something gimmicky. With the flag of their Spanish heritage flying high—they have a song here entitled “The First Lance of Spain” for crying out loud—Dark Moor produces a hefty feast of grandiose power metal baptized in minor symphonic/orchestral influences and instruments. The songs aren’t radically different from one another, yet there’s a lot going on in each tune to give each one its own unique tint. The first number, “The First Lance of Spain,” doesn’t differ too radically from other tracks like “The City of Peace,” but the melodies and flares are often calculated and manufactured differently. That said, the aforementioned songs are two examples of the sheer excellence here. The riffs and solos are dramatic and demanding, and Alfred Romero, Dark Moor’s vocalist, proves he is one of the unsung heroes of power metal with one of its most amazingly graceful and versatile voices. It’s not like Dark Moor used some magic orb which blesses its user with awesome musical abilities to make “Ars Musica” so good; they’re just fantastic at writing cohesive, addicting anthems that have a lot of color yet not overloading with it. In fact, some of the more serious numbers, especially “Together as Ever,” are the album’s prime cuts. However, that is not to imply more chaotic songs like “Living in a Nightmare” deserve participation ribbons—Dark Moor has the game mastered no matter what they do. Female vocals are used semi-frequently behind Romero’s bellowing, and the orchestral elements are never underplayed or overcooked. The bass has an enormous presence here as well, and there are several songs in which Mario Garcia hammers out an organized bass lead and takes complete control of the whole portrait. Me gusta. However, “Spanish Suite (Asturias),” one of those neoclassical instrumental bits, runs a little too long and has pacing issues that throw it off a bit—not a horrible song, but it is far from the lush territory of its cohorts. “Ars Musica” is otherwise a stupendous experience of enchantment and supremacy by one of power metal’s strongest titans. This, ladies and gentlemen, is an album from a band that knows what it’s doing, and you’ll be enthralled by Dark Moor’s magic minutes after the power of “Ars Musica” has created an ethereal portal to an enticing world where first-rate power metal rules the day. The classy gentlemen of Dark Moor may not be overlords of their niche, yet they’re far from being a one-trick pony or a temporary flavor that’ll fizzle out. Check this out, now.

Album:

One thing about Dark Moor is the band’s ability to evolve musically without losing their signature sound. With Project X they have taken one step further in their permanent search for musical perfection, with progressive metal, hard rock, classic heavy metal and many other styles displayed throughout the songs, as well as Dark Moor’s signature orchestral arrangements. The album will be released worldwide on November 6 and will be available in a standard and double digipack edition, this last one including five bonus tracks consisting of some outstanding remakes of songs taken from the band’s first albums. Project X was produced by Luigi Stefanini (Rhapsody Of Fire, Labyrinth, Vision Divine) and Enrik Garcia. The beautiful cover artwork was handled by Gyula Havancsák (Stratovarius, Grave Digger, Destruction, Annihilator). Three videos are in the works and will be released soon.

Album:

Dark Moor's previous album, Project X, was hot garbage. "Gabriel" was an okay tune at best, but everything else was reprehensibly bad. With that musical blunder now staining their career, my eyes were fixed on whatever Dark Moor did next because I was hoping they'd be able to pick themselves up and go back to playing that classically-inclined symphonic metal we loved--at the very least, a return to the quality of Autumnal if The Hall of the Olden Dreams was an impossibility. Of course, there was always the possibility that the previous album was no fluke and Dark Moor was now destined to suck forevermore. But neither happened; we ended up with Origins, which is an album at war with itself, simultaneously trying to be invigorating and interesting once again, but it just can't entirely quit the opioid that is soft rock. The result is an album that has two very obvious, clashing halves that makes the whole thing feel disjointed. The album starts off with "Birth of the Sun," which is altogether entirely different from what Dark Moor usually puts out, but nevertheless is fresh and exciting, if a little simplistic. The rolling drums and judicious use of bagpipe give it a distinct folk sound and Alfred's descending vocal hooks through the chorus are a treat, and we end up with a song that won't set the world on fire but is nevertheless enjoyable. That's a good sign! A few tracks later, we get the album's biggest earworm with "In the Middle of the Night," which is one of the aforementioned soft rock tunes that Dark Moor seem predisposed to making anymore, but clear direction and pleasing melodies, including its pulpy late-70s-sounding main riff, elevate it over similar songs both on this album and on the last few albums. "Isuelt" is just a pretty good ballad--nothing really noteworthy or outstanding, just pretty good. And the album's closer, "Green Lullaby," sure is a nice little lullaby. It seems like, aside from the opener, all the best songs on the album are on the slower end, which seems like the opposite of what should be happening. Oh, and there's "Raggle Taggle Gypsy," which can be either a good or bad song depending on your propensity towards silly tongue-in-cheek folk songs. I think it's amusing enough, but your mileage will vary greatly with this one.First of all, I joked about Alfred sounding like he just got back from the dentist on Project X because of his ridiculous lisp, and it seems like that trend has not only continued, but gotten worse. At times, he sounds like Scott Malkinson, and no one deserves to sound like Scott Malkinson. The guitar tone is also really thin and weak, at times failing outright to make itself known, making the whole album feel even more limp and lifeless than it should be. But anyway, continuing the train of thought from the previous section, whenever Origins tries to go for a faster tune, it seems to stumble and fall on its face most of the time. "The Specters Dance" is almost a good song, keeping up the folk elements while being upbeat and energetic, but the fact that it's so dead simple and offers no surprises whatsoever makes it impossible to remember once it ends. "Crossing Through Your Heart" suffers the same problem of being too disposable--the lyrics clearly want to inspire me with the prospect of exciting rock music being felt with every fiber of my being, but the delivery all around is just so bland and tame that the very idea of pulse-pounding rock music seems like a myth. Every other song transcends mediocrity and exists only on a spectrum of Bad to Worse, from the vomit-inducing faux-bad boy rock stylings of "Holy Geometry" or the utterly dull "Druidic Creed," up to "And For Ever," which is probably the most generic ballad Dark Moor have ever written. An attempt was made. Origins clearly is scraping about for ideas and direction, and while it sometimes finds success, it more often than not grabs a handful of plain oatmeal or, worse in the case of "Holy Geometry," a fistful of toilet fudge. This is a band that found itself in the gutter after attending a UFO conspiracy convention and getting fired from their jobs for doing far too many drugs, and this album consists of a band trying to clean themselves up for that important interview, but their black eye and withdrawal ticks are still visible and obvious, and they're pretty sure the urine test is going to come back looking like a Jackson Pollock painting--they haven't fully recovered from that insane bender, but dammit all, they're trying. And maybe the next album might actually reveal a band that's good again! But this is not that album. This is the halfway house album. The first awkward rehab session album. The explaining-to-your-neighbor-why-there's-a-flower-pot-shoved-up-their-dog's-ass album. And it should be viewed as such.
