Bio:

1997: Crom dissolves his band TEARS OF TIME, to join German Black Metal band DARK FORTRESS on guitar, only to realise after a while that playing guitar would not completely satisfy him. So, in the winter of that year, he founded his solo project CROM, which has been described as Majestic Melodic Metal.
2000: Crom leaves DARK FORTRESS to concentrate all his attention on CROM, and the first demo is released (Promo 2000).
2002: In January Crom enters the Aexxys Art / Schwandorf studios to record "The Fallen Beauty" EP. However, the studio undergoes refurbishment immediately after recording ends, causing the final mixing to be delayed, and the CD is not completed until June 2002.
Another self-produced MCD follows on from "The Fallen Beauty" (Promo 2002).
2005: Crom joins DARK FORTRESS vocalist AZATHOTH, to form SINDECADE, a Black Metal side project, and the MCD "Terrorcrowned" is released on his own label Neocreation Productions. This is purely a recording project and was never intended to be a live band.
2007: February sees the completion of the new CROM album "Vengeance". CROM’s first live performance takes place in May when the band supports DARK FORTRESS.
2008: CROM signs to Pure Steel Records and “Vengeance” is released on the 29th August.

Album:

Crom’s popularity in the underground community has spiked since the release of 2008′s Vengeance, which was a marvel of very heartfelt and effective power/folk metal. With bated breath, we’ve awaited the coming of a new album, and upon its arrival, it seems that Crom (or Walter Grosse, whichever you prefer) is still a very personal project, and retains its one-man band status. The contents of the album have been kept a mystery, which suits the artist’s aura of grey drab mystery just fine.On Of Love And Death, Crom’s sound is very similar to that which has become familiar on Vengeance. The atmosphere, however, is unmistakably different, as one might expect from an album based around the swirling dichotomy of its conceptual subjects. Like Vengeance, it is an often acoustic album with a soul steeped in epic heavy and some black metal. The extreme metal influence is perhaps more clearly present in this new album, with a few harsh scrapes in the background of opener “Reason To Live”, and the gritty wash of the distorted guitar. By and large however, Grosse’s inimitable style of keening, forlorn vocals are the primary focus of the album, and they have improved without a doubt. Gone are the vocal imperfections of the debut, and only a more harsh vocal critic than myself would find something to nitpick here. The acoustic guitar is what really lends Crom its atmosphere, and Of Love And Death is chock full of eternally plodding arpeggios and rather bare performances from the bass and drums as well. Layered vocals and melancholy vocal melodies build upon this framework to erect stories of heartbreak, longing, and wistful pondering. This album is heavier than its predecessor in terms of distorted guitar usage, as well as the occasional scream or harsh snarl, but it is also a bit more redundant. Here, my estimation of the album’s value drops, for the songs do indeed begin to recede in their general memorability. The heavier parts of this music simply do not work in Crom’s favor in nearly the same way that the softer material does. Some may say that Vengeance had this same tendency, but here the melodies are interrupted by guitar solos, and the atmosphere punctuated by more instrumental distractions. By becoming more of a metal project, I believe that the message has become a bit lost in the proceedings. I observe less of a sense of purpose and rich memories and more idle musings on Of Love And Death. My personal favorite track, and one of the most masterfully melodic and lyrically enchanting, is “This Dying World”, which deserves special mention for its breathless admiration of the world, mixed with despair and anguish at its inevitable ruin. Unfortunately, I find that I don’t appreciate most of the album in this way, and in general this is a weaker, albeit more professionally assembled effort than Crom’s debut. While the somber setting offers a few heartwrenching moments and the band’s signature atmosphere, it isn’t accomplished as well as it has been in the past. Maybe someone who has experienced heartbreak can appreciate this album better than I, but other bands have managed to bring me to the brink of tears and beyond with this same subject, and so I am left with doubt. Whatever the case, this is a bit of a disappointment after waiting for so long, and not just because there’s no equivalent of the splendid “Wings Of Fire”. Still, I recommend this for fans of the band’s previous work, since you might get more out of it than I have, and those who enjoy epic heavy metal may enjoy a soak in Crom’s pensive atmosphere.

Album:

Formed by ex Dark Fortress guitarist Walter ‘Crom’ Grosse, this is his namesake solo band with its inspiration unmistakably taken from Conan and musically Bathory and early Manowar. As such, if its epic warrior metal that you crave, then look no further as this is what Crom is all about. Yet while some songs may be hard and involve stirring Nordic choirs, in the main Crom is about ballads and usually sorrowful ones about fallen heroes, mourned brothers and missed friends, often using gentle acoustics and deep folk melodies with strong overall emphasis on evoking a powerful atmosphere steeped in heart breaking warrior passion. With Grosse covering manly soulful vocals touched by melancholia as well as all guitars, he is joined once again by Dark Fortress drummer Seraph and former keyboardist Paymon on additional backing vocals. “When Northmen Die” is Grosse’s 3rd full length release and while he certainly takes his time to issue his albums, they’re well worth the wait given the excellent compositions, all 13 of which certainly hit the mark in every sense from being emotively memorable to using intelligent arrangements, all of which collude to produce that aforementioned powerful atmosphere on songs like the thundering ‘Behold The Lights’ with its double bass drumming and even heavier warrior choirs, the flowing guitar passion on ‘Shields Of Gold’ and ‘One Step To The Lake Below’, an epic tale building through heavy, dirty guitars superbly contrasted by soulful vocals and dark drawls, along with wailing guitar melodies and even more haunting choirs – wow! All I can say is if you’ve not heard Crom before, then I strongly urge you to do so, for you may be in for a surprise…and a truly magical one at that.

Line-Up:

Walter 'Crom' Grosse – vocals, guitars, bass, choir

Album:

CROM’s new album was not written and recorded for this “market”. Mastermind Walter “Crom” Grosse has played that game (and won in, for that matter) with Dark Fortress (he served there as bassist and guitarist between 1997 and 2001), but he retreated to his Bathory-inspired musical influences and stood his ground with his project Crom, which slowly turned into a three-man army. “The Era Of Darkness” is the new battlefield of the trio and, once again, it breathes and lives heavy metal in its most epic forms. From big chorus to gigantic, fist-pumping solos and breathtaking guitar leads, the new Crom album is a collection of varied but cohesive heavy/power metal anthems that will get your blood pumping once again for true metal, if you listen to it properly – paying attention to the lyrics, active listening and giving it enough spins, instead of just turning to the next release stream after a few minutes.Whilst playing with German melodic black metallers Dark Fortress, Walter “Crom” Grosse began working on a solo-project that was worlds apart from the raw aggression normally associated with the genre in which he started. The more the work progressed, the more Grosse realised that he much preferred to forge his own musical path, a path where melody is the defining factor, and, following on from the positive response to his debut EP “The Fallen Beauty”, he decided to focus his attention solely on the band that had become Crom.
