Bio:

Unleash The Archers have been on the road since their inception in 2007, and subsequently created an immensely loyal North American fanbase. The success of their sophomore album brought them overseas to the ears of European metalheads, and now they are slowly infiltrating the South-American and Asian markets with their genre-defying brand of music. Their live show is fast-paced and wildly entertaining; the combination of power vocals, death screams, tasty guitar licks and complex drumming provides a little something for everyone. UTA plays kick ass heavy metal, with fist-pumping anthemic melodies you can’t help but sing along to.

Album:

Sometimes you just need to storm a castle. Or sack a city. Capture enemy territory. Depose a king. Weekend stuff. But it’s a Tuesday and you forgot to bring your Amon Amarth CDs to the office. Good thing you have “Time Stands Still” in your briefcase (go with it -- some people still use briefcases). You’ve only got 40 minutes to obliterate the enemy’s forward patrols before lunch is over, so you do what you must and pop in what you’ve got. 40 minutes later, you are bloody and triumphant. The first notes of intro “Northern Passage” filter through your soundbits and your blood begins to simmer. You set up your ambush as the enemy soldiers prepare to cross a river. You’ve got them cornered. The wind changes, the waterside soldiers feel it, and you’re out of time. You rise from your crouch, motion to your men, and the rush to the enemy. You feel more than your feet carrying you to arms -- inspiration, desire and mortality combined as Brittney Slayes layers vocal harmonies– a valkyrie of death, surely. Battle is joined.Unleash the Archers supports your clash of blades with the solid and muscular power metal of “Frozen Steel.” Everything you need to kill more than you are killed is right here. All is going well, but the wind shifts again. You look past the battle and see… enemy reinforcements. You’ll be outnumbered and pinched from your escape route in a matter of seconds. Not to worry, you’ve got tricks of your own. As you dig in to meet the charge of the now doubled foe, your sound-processing lobe picks up…. Blast beats? Death metal vocals? Can it be? Yes! “Hail of the Tide” has the one thing you need to survive – brootality. It isn’t the whole song, but it’s just enough to turn you from veteran swordsman to a frothing berserker. By the time the 32nd notes kick back in your unit has re-formed a line and you realize your jagged axes have once again evened the battle. On and on it goes. Seconds as minutes as hours. The battle shifts constantly and you are driven forward by harsh vocals, soaring falsettos, searing solos, dramatic melodies, blast beats and swords-in-the-flesh choruses.Eventually your band of warriors grinds more death into the bones of the enemy than they have into you, and the day is won. You drop your shield, wading into the river to wash the blood from your blades and reflect on the decimation of so many warriors, friend and foe alike. As the carrion birds begin to circle and you leave battle field the title track’s large-chested chorus fades away. You realize that this battle would have been won much more quickly had one of the Great Generals – such as Kursch or Hegg – had been leading the charge. Yet you also realize that without such grand leadership an extra regiment of archers helped you avoid godly introductions for one more day.You tell all this to Larry as you sit down at your one o’clock meeting. He looks at you weird. Lucky for that mook “Time Stands Still” ended on the elevator, or else you would have had to fashion an axe out of pens and rubber bands. It’s still Tuesday, and you just don’t have time for that.

Album:

Unleash the Archers is a band that proudly raises the flag of the modern approach on power metal, with lots of groove and even some death-like growls. By know you must have at least heard of them as they have achieved considerable exposure with their latest entry, ‘Time Stands Still’, so these Canadians are not strangers to the scene. Making metal similar to that of 3 Inches of Blood, Crimson Shadow, and on a smaller scale Seven Kingdoms and Kobra and the Lotus, the band returns to the spotlight with their fourth entry, ‘Apex’, which will be released via Napalm Records on June 2nd.This time around, though, the band relies on more epic and mystical atmospheres and go full-on power metal, almost completely abandoning the death-ish elements from their previous works. ‘Apex’ celebrates 10 years of Unleash the Archers with feverous riffs and blasting choirs, all while maintaining a respectable production quality that makes every instrument shine.Tracks like “Awakening”, “The Matriarch” and “The Coward’s Way” offer a more direct and heavier mix, with the drums provided by Scott Buchanan and the prominent bass by newcomer Nikko Whitworth making the tunes sound vivid and powerful; Brittney Slayes does a great job in those, especially in the chorus of “The Matriarch”. “Shadow Guide”, though, feels a little lackluster and doesn’t quite click as a good song nor matches the overall atmosphere of the record. But it’s in the epic portion of the effort where the band truly shines. “Cleanse the Bloodlines” – released as a video – slowly builds itself into a bombastic experience not without a good climax in the chorus, with yet another good performance by Brittney. The second part of the album, actually, is stacked with more opulent songs that manage to keep the blood pumping, in one way or another.Truth be told, the semi-ballad “False Walls” is not on par with the whole concept and speed of the record and “Earth and Ashes” is definitely a miss because of its tempo, song construction and overall performance, especially in the verses and bridge, but “Ten Thousand Against One”, for instance, is jacked up with energy and with an obliterating and bombastic chorus, worthy of being called a war chant. The drums are particularly loud here, and the galloping riffs allied with the choirs more than make up for some of the weaker bits.“Call Me Immortal” is decent, albeit not reaching the status of being really good. Virtuous bass lines are evident here and the chugging riffs make up for the not so inspired vocal display by Brittney, which seems tired and more mechanical in this one, maybe because of the vocal mixing. The title-track closes the endeavor and, not by coincidence, is the most grandiose and carefully crafted of the songs here. An acoustic guitar paves the way to a poignant atmosphere and a beautiful verse, where Brittney steals the spotlight with clean and sorrowful vocals. Melodic, yet imposing, the track showcases a high level of songwriting and one of the best choruses of Unleash the Archer’s career.Swift melodies, virtuous but objective guitar lines and catchy hooks are plenty in ‘Apex’. Despite showing an almost pathological need to be dramatic, the Canadians fare well on balancing the magical with the mundane, on an album that is satisfying and, despite trying to be epic almost on a cartoonish level, is easy to digest. Heavy metal purists will have some sort of resistance to the band’s modern way of playing metal, but if you look at it closely you’ll see that this album is nothing more than power metal played with a twist. While looking to modernize and making their work accessible, Unleash the Archers are taking large steps toward being in the main leagues and have delivered a good effort while doing so. Let’s hope, though, that their newfound “stardom” doesn’t affect their ability to play from the heart. Recommended.

Album:

UNLEASH THE ARCHERS return with their new EP " Explorers ," to be released on October 11, 2019 via Napalm Records, only two years after having released their smashing album " Apex ." The EP will feature two cover songs. The first single to be released on August 30, 2019 is called “ Northwest Passage ”, originally written and performed by Stan Rogers.“This song means a lot to us as a band, we like to put it on during those long drives on tour and it always brings us right back home. We originally recorded it to be a bonus track for our last full length album Apex, but we loved the track so much we knew it needed special treatment. We held on to it for a bit and eventually decided to release it as its own 7" vinyl EP with another Canadian cover song as the B side. The song “Northwest Passage” is all about touring through Canada, which Stan Rogers did a lot, and how it equates to being an explorer looking for the passage all those years ago. It really hits home with us, we've toured through Canada too many times to count, so we know just how Stan was feeling. That's where the name of the EP came from too; every time we hit the road on tour it's like we too become Explorers, with the great big unknown stretching out before us.” The artwork for Explorers was created by Dusty Peterson and UNLEASH THE ARCHERS are very happy with it: “We feel it captures the essence of seeking the “Northwest Passage” perfectly. If you have ever read 'The Terror' by Dan Simmons or watched the show you'll know exactly what we were going for. This EP has darkness written all over it, but the songs themselves have a slightly uplifting undertone as well. One can only imagine how exciting it must have been to explore this unknown continent back in the day, but also, how terrifying.” Album artwork by Dusty Peterson. The second track on " Explorers ," “ Heartless World ”, was originally written by Canadian hair metal band Teaze. UNLEASH THE ARCHERS say they gravitated towards this band, because they aren’t super well known: “The song “ Heartless World ” has a really interesting arrangement and can't seem to decide if it's a ballad or a rock opera. Unlike “ Northwest Passage ”, where we played around with it quite a bit, we left “Heartless World” almost completely as is, and only changed a few small things like solos and vocal melodies. We thought it would be a great companion piece to “ Northwest Passage ” and really round out the moody ' Explorers " vibe.”In addition, it was just announced that U NLEASH THE ARCHERS will take part in theFull Metal Cruise 2020, which starts in Kiel, Germany, on 23rd September 2020, alongside Sonata Arctica and label colleagues Legion Of The Damned – don’t miss it!

Album:

Less than a year after the release of the covers EP "Explorers", Canadian melodic power metal quartet Unleash The Archers has sharpened the arrows and hits the bullseye once again with a fifth full-length album, "Abyss". Featuring 10 new tracks, this adventure is a concept album and sequel to 2017's "Apex", once again recorded with legendary producer Jacob Hansen of Hansen Studios in Denmark. "Abyss" succeeds in showcasing the mindblowing technical craftsmanship of the young four-piece with the perfect mix of highly complex, catchy bangers and moody, synth-infused power ballads. Pairing traditional heavy sounds in the vein of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with fast-paced power metal, the album is once again accented by front woman Brittney Slayes' raw four octave mezzo-soprano, shining both in powerful anthems like the outstanding title track "Abyss" as well as the fragile intro of the epic "The Wind That Shapes The Land" and contrasted with guttural screams on the soaring "Return To Me" or the transcendent album closer "Afterlife". The quartet from Vancouver has forged its own niche in the world of metal and cemented it with memorable live shows all over the world. Now, a lucky 13 years after their inception, they've delivered their strongest album to date.
