Bio:

Northern Germany, March. Somewhere in the prairie of Schleswig-Holstein. It’s late in the evening. Music producer Thorsten Brötzmann sits together with the Wacken promoters Thomas Jensen and Holger Hübner. They speak about the “Wacken Foundation”, which Brötzmann is a part of as a board member. After they’re done talking, Brötzmann reminds himself that he wanted to play to Thomas and Holger a musical piece that he has discovered. He puts the first recordings of Beyond The Black in his stereo. The Wacken promoters are stoked. It’s not accurately reported, but the duo Jensen-Hübner probably said something like: “We need this band for Wacken”, because a couple of months later Beyond The Black celebrate their first on-stage appearance at the world's biggest metal festival – it's the beginning of a success story. Now Beyond The Black release their first album, which will close a gaping hole in Germany's music scene. They play Female Fronted Metal that swings back and forth between epic and pomp, sophisticated Gothic melodies and heavy guitar solos. The band is not afraid of embedding melancholic keyboard parts and is always keen to deliver a catchy tune. One perfect example: “In The Shadows”, a song that uses a powerful refrain to carve itself into one's ears, while flute and bagpipe provide an epic atmosphere. Always in the spotlight: The voice of 19-year-old Jennifer Haben. She formed the band together with friends in Mannheim, who are all college-trained, professional musicians and have broad musical influences from Evanescence to Pantera. Jennifer herself plays piano since she has been six, saxophone since she has been seven years old. She first joined a band when she was only nine years old. Some people are simply born for music. Later she taught herself to play guitar, won singing contests and found her new love in Rock and Metal. The logical next step is Beyond The Black and their debut album, which was produced by Sascha Paeth (Avantasia) in collaboration with the team of Elephant Music. The songs on it deal with the rocks that life throws in your way. They tell the listener about the pain of separation, blows of fate, but also about hope, the overwhelming will to fight and to never give up. They are “Songs Of Love And Death” as the band expresses it with one of their song titles. Songs so full of symbolism, that they allow every listener to extract an own personal message. Songs, that impress with their atmosphere – an atmosphere, which was also discovered by the directors of the movie “Northmen – A Viking Saga”. When their movie hit the cinemas the Viking Metal band Amon Amarth already published a music video referring to the movie. For the DVD release of “Northmen – A Viking Saga” Beyond The Black follow Amon Amarth's lead. Their upcoming music video for the song “In The Shadows” will show scenes from the spectacular action movie – and a band that already has one hit song up its sleeve. Besides many powerful original songs a cover version found its way onto the album – a cover of Motörhead's hard rock ballad “Love Me Forever”. “I always liked the song and imagined what it would sound like on a piano since I have first heard it. Now I was finally able to play it as I had imagined”, says Jennifer about the song that Beyond The Black borrowed from Metal heroes Motörhead. They are experienced when it comes to Metal heroes anyway. Their first tour led them to England – as support for Saxon, whose fans were enthused. Beyond The Black want to follow up on that success. They will tour with another top act that hasn’t been revealed yet. Also they will go on their first headlining tour in autumn. Before that they'll take part in the Metal Cruise and also return to the place of their initial triumph: Wacken! This time they will bring an album with them, with which they want to conquer the rest of the world.

Album:

The discovery at last year's Wacken Festival's Beyond The Black and this band creates a gaping loophole in Germany musical to close: Beyond The Black play female fronted Metal!Their debut album "Songs Of Love And Death" supplies Metal, which oscillates between epic and pomp, between filigree gothic melodies and powerful guitar solos. The band embeds melancholy keyboard passages in their songs, but also embarrassed to any metal catchy, like the single "In The Shadows" shows. The video for "In The Shadows" includes ürbigens original sequences of action cinema spectacle "Northmen - A Viking Saga," the theatrical release published the Viking metallers Amon Amarth a music video for DVD release on 06/03. now follows Beyond The Black. In addition to strong compost ions such as "Unbroken", "Drowning In Darkness" and "Running To The Edge" is a cover version of Motorhead ballad "Love Me Forever" in the title of this album adds a list. No wonder this song is really predestined to make the extraordinary voice of 19-year-old Jennifer, have to focus.»Songs Of Love And Death" is an album that was long overdue.

Album:

Lost In Forever is the second studio album by the German symphonic metal band Beyond the Black. It will be released on February 12, 2016 on Airforce1 Records and We Love Music. This is the first album to feature all six band members instead of studio and guest musicians. When is the right time in the right place, you can still stir up the music sector vigorously today. This is what the German Symphonic metallers Beyond The Black very impressive with their debut album Songs Of Love And Death demonstrated. With the sympathetic young lady Jennifer Did they could send in 2015 not only a great album on the journey, they rocked on stage every show without end, so that the expectations of the second Silberling are already extremely high. After the release of Lost In Forever, which takes place in a few days (on 02.12.2016), it is already on the next tour in support of the German rock icon Scorpions - a meteoric rise of a group that did not make it otherwise deserves. Somehow you have to think a piece with the band far to the Dutch group After Forever, which at that time never came up again on her debut and thereby quickly found an abrupt end.Once you have Lost In Forever made to rotate in the player, you will hear the title track, which carries on where Songs Of Love And Death has ceased. An exciting sound enriched with the mandatory major chorus, which was hammermäßig integrated, Beyond The Black generate a hit with cult potential equal to the first track. Without bands like Xandria, Delain Epica or to offend: against the six musicians from Mannheim look at the chapels with their front women not again and can see the taillights only in the distant future. That the strong start is not a coincidence, Beautiful Lies can emphasize following. The duet of guest vocalist Rick Altzi Masterplan and Jennifer have is sugary, knitted songwriting 1A and fits perfectly into the concept of the band.Written In Blood, the third title, opens the door to calmer climes, ending in the ballad Against The World. Much faster is what Beyond The Mirror also not the point. Almost reverently edit Beyond The Black in the middle part of the album their pieces. Halo Of The Dark may be identified as a highlight as happy as it again based on a strong vocal backbone and enchanted by the loving tunes the handset. With Dies Irae the impact rate increases audible mystic rhythms waft through the cold castle walls up to the cold courtyard, which is covered by a white blanket of snow. A clear concept leads to Forget My Name and Burning In Flames, which, like all other media, exemplary in the history match. Without their own art to copy, the two guitarists Christopher Hummels and Niels Lesser meander just like to the specified starting point. The backing vocals of Christopher Hummels creating focussed pinpricks, often allowed Michael Hauser on keyboards produce bombastic moments that you want to miss under any circumstances! Again and again the Mannheim remain incredibly fast passages in the head. This is not because they are imported cheap or easy knit, much more make Burning In Flames or Nevermore the nerve of time. Whether bleak, open, epic or even seasoned - all bring drummer Tobias of those and bassist Erwin Schmidt on the second tattoo. Weaknesses tries to make out in vain, because the last works Heaven Bring to Light and Love's A Burden Lost In Forever without blemishes on the finishing straight.

Line Up:

Jennifer Haben - Vocals (ex-Saphir)
Christopher "Christo" Hummels - Rhythm Guitar & Harsh Vocals (ex-PanicZone, ex-Lamera, ex-Abrasion, ex-Groncaloncas, ex-Infestribution)

Album:

Where others still lose themselves in colorful descriptions, this band has already set its next course and is heading with full force right into the "Heart Of The Hurricane". The title of the third album is metaphorically where Beyond The Black feel they are - and 2018 is going to be the year in which this charismatic outfit based around Jennifer Haben explores what they describe as 'the stylistic limitations of extremes: where on the one hand the screws of hardness are tightened again by several turns and on the other hand a previously unprecedented catchiness dominates the pieces.Beyond The Black continue with their unerring sense of gripping melodies, mixed up with pulverizing blast beats, rousing neck breaker riffs, epic keyboard passages and elaborately arranged strings and choral settings. From the atmospheric gloomy heaviness ("Through The Mirror", "My God Is Dead"), the band spans the stylistic arc of their distinctive metal meets medieval sound ("Scream For Me", "Song For The Godless") to the bittersweet acoustic ballad "Breeze". Together, the huge mix of elf-like vocals and deep-set growls create a bombastic widescreen production - from the heart into the fingers or "from the heart into the vocal chords", as singer Jennifer says.

Album:

Over the last four years, Beyond the Black have proven relentless in their determination to climb to the top of the Symphonic Metal mountain and claim their place among the greats. And to be fair, the German quintet are making a pretty good go of it. Yet their dominating self-assertion, despite it positives, can make any such aspirations feel a little premature. As their latest album, ‘Hørizøns,’ sometimes makes all too clear.Injecting a Pop sensibility into Metal is something that has often been practiced, and has produced some memorable results. As is true for a great deal of ‘Hørizøns’. However, it doesn’t always work. Indeed, “Misery” feels less like a track born of Beyond the Black, and more as if Pop-duo, The Veronicas, burst into the studio in an obnoxious, “hold my beer” kind of moment. Similarly, “I Won’t Surrender” comes across contrived as if it were written fireside with ‘The Little Book of Generic, Melancholy Piano Ballads” in their back pocket. Which is curious, as Beyond the Black have previously thrived and triumphed in such Pop/Metal hybrid ballads with songs like, “Through the Mirror”. Thankfully the majority of ‘Hørizøns’ gifts us with much stronger numbers. Including a groove riddled “Some Kind of Monster”, the subliminally atmospheric “Coming Home”, and a stunning duet entitled “Wounded Healer”, featuring Elize Ryd, of Amaranthe. When we look at the royals of Symphonic Metal such as Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica, one standout commonality in their DNA is they are each led by a vocalist with a strong, spry and striking voice. Beyond the Black share this distinction, with Jennifer Haben’s vocals supplying the lifeline at the epicenter of ‘Hørizøns’, with well-crafted instrumentation working around it. Haben is the face of Beyond the Black, and the only remaining original member as of 2016. Not that you’re likely to forget it with her image appearing three times on the album artwork. Yet Haben commands, and delivers, with the full involvement of her bandmates behind her. Songs such as the irresistibly good “Golden Pariahs,” and the howling harmonies of “Paralyzed” emphasize this. Together, they capture Haben’s sonorous vocals married with the melodious Pop-Metal soundscapes orchestrated by Stefan Harkenhoff (Bass), Chris Hermsdofer (Guitars/Backing Vocals), Tobi Lodes (Guitars/Backing Vocals) and Kai Tschierschky (Drums). Songs highlighting the natural progression of a band honing their craft through rigorous work and maturing as songwriters. It is no secret that Beyond the Black have gone stratospheric within the scene. Their music swept up by their ever-growing fanbase at the same speed toilet paper seems to disappear from supermarket shelves these days. June 19th will see the release of their latest effort, ‘Hørizøns,’ following on from 2018’s widely popular ‘Heart of the Hurricane’. ‘Hørizøns’ is a powerhouse demonstration of a captivating band continuing to grow, coming more into their own, even if several songs feel less enriched so much as forced, formulaic, and even influenced. Perhaps this album will prove to be an ambitious experiment by a band in transition. For when it works, the relationship between Symphonic Metal and Pop delivers some explosive songs you won’t soon forget. When it doesn’t, this same formula gives us something far more rushed, benign, and diluted in its hurry to claim the mountain top. There is little doubt that Beyond the Black can complete their ascension up the Symphonic Metal mountain. And ‘Hørizøns’ certainly brings them that bit closer

Album:

Beyond The Black is back with a bang to start a new chapter. Following the release of highly acclaimed tracks "Reincarnation" and "Is There Anybody Out There", the band announces its new, fifth studio album, which will be self-titled.2023 will surely be a fruitful year for the metal crops. One of the first pieces of solid proof we have in order to back this statement is the delayed Christmas gift that the German, Symphonic metal quintet: Beyond The Black are dropping from their studio sleigh in Germany; their self-titled album: “Beyond The Black”.I have come to find, that when a band usually releases a self-titled album, they are finally in a comfortable place in their career, and have gained enough popularity and confidence, that they want to solidify their place in their genre, (Symphonic Metal) and be amongst its greats: Nightwish, Avantasia, Within Temptation; by dropping an official statement, so-to-speak, as to who they are and what they are all about. Now, that Jennifer Haben has managed to keep Beyond The Black running with the same line-up of members since 2016, have they been able to coherently put together “The” album which displays just that?I discovered Beyond The Black in the distant feeling 2019 and I have been following their work ever since. The success of their last few albums has really elevated them in the European scene since they first set sail in 2014. They have experimented with their sound throughout that time, and it is intriguing to find out how their self-titled album has come together as a result of that journey. The album surely doesn’t disappoint; it’s Beyond The Black, alright! Jennifer Haben’s angelic, but powerful voice, perfectly contrasted with Chris Hermsdörfer’s mighty backing growls and even mightier heavy riffs; coated with gentle melodies and solid lyrics depicting epic tales. What more could you want? The opening track: “Is There Anybody Out There”, is a true testament to that, as it punches you straight in the face with a heavy banger of a riff, making it my personal favorite track of the record, and rightfully taking its place in my “Ultimate Metal Playlist”.Beyond The Black’s last album from 2019; “Hørizøns”, was an all-round different album, as the predominant sound had a “pop-y” overlay throughout, making it sound rather modern and distant from their roots in symphonic metal, which requires: thrilling, blood-boiling, mighty fantasy tales, with classical elements which evoke the “epic” feeling you would expect from a “Lord Of The Rings” style soundtrack, but wrapped in heavy metal.“Beyond The Black” is a whole different beast of a record, however, as it brings back these elements of the genre, and adds more! From the get-go, in the opening track: “Is There Anybody Out There”, there is a predominant focus on high-pitched, folklore music-inspired vocals, which are the centerpiece of the song, positioned between every major verse, with the exclusion of the solo. They are truly punchy and “in your face”, so the band wants you to notice and appreciate them. This style of vocals comes in as a support to the lyrics as they elevate the “epic saga” themes of the songs, which further adds to the connotations of the symphonic metal genre. You can also find strong examples of this kind of vocals in the 9th track of the record: “Not In Our Name”.The album surely doesn’t suffer from a lack of variety or exciting moments; there is plenty to go around! Further backing this statement is the flavourful addition of acoustic guitar elements in some of the songs, which playfully contrast the electric guitars at times. Another fruitful element I picked up on, is the occasional mirroring of pitch between the vocals and guitars. These quirky aspects of the songs truly make the album an original and enjoyable experience, as it forces you to listen closely and appreciate every detail. As with just about everything, of course, you can’t have a perfect outcome, as there are too many variables and elements that bind everything together. Although I believe the mix to be sufficient and pleasant to the ears, I found the drums to be ever so slightly left on the back burner at times, and I believe that percussion should be punchier in every mix, but that could be a result of bias, so of course, it will vary between listeners. Furthermore, unlike the whole record, I found the drums somewhat lacking in an “IT” factor, they are just there supporting the action, which is not an issue, but more of a preference, which I believe would have impacted the overall quality of the album. Of course, these are deeper technical opinions for the sake of the review, which won’t bother the casual listener in any way.In conclusion, the album delivers on being a solid addition to the symphonic metal genre, and although I wouldn’t label it as “genre-defining”, it certainly is career-defining for Beyond The Black! It truly is a worthy representation of what Beyond The Black are all about as a band. It keeps the elements that work and adds a plethora of new ones which makes it a pleasurable and exciting audible experience. It is safe to say that Beyond The Black are the “Heart Of The Hurricane” which will keep the legacy of the symphonic metal alive for years to come!
