Bio:

Ever since EPICA emerged on the scene at the end of 2002, the band has been living in a whirlwind of studio recordings, interviews, screaming fans, live performances and a rock 'n roll lifestyle. With every new album EPICA pushes the boundaries by reinventing their distinctive style, and nothing seems to stop the band on their rise to the top. With their previous record ‘Design Your Universe', seen by many as a true milestone in bombastic and symphonic metal, EPICA seemed to have found the perfect musical mixture between classical and heavy music. The album entered the charts everywhere and consolidated their position among the top of today's metal acts. An extensive tour marathon with over 200 headlining shows allover the globe proved both their ambition and their success. This time EPICA once again raises the bar with their fifth album called 'Requiem of the Indifferent'. Full of trademark hymns, significant lyrics, powerful guitar riffing alternated with cinematic interludes, Simone Simons' angelic voice, it is a very logical step after ‘Design Your Universe'. Again it is an album which has to grow on the listener, so make sure to give it a couple of spins to get the whole picture. As with every album, EPICA mixes hard, technical and fast with intimate and slow, with as good as everything in between. However, this time around it are the huge contrasts which make ‘Requiem for the Indifferent' stick out. The album will take you on a journey through brutal metal, sweet melodies, technical instrumental passages, theatrical moods, epic orchestration, varying vocal ranges, catchy tunes followed by complex songwriting, etc. More than ever the band connects all these extremes flawlessly, making this a more dynamic, more versatile, more detailed, more style crossing EPICA than before. All of this is actually an acccumulation of individual talent, as EPICA happens to have some of the finest musicians around. Ariën Van Weesenbeek, one of the best drummers in the metal scene, supported by the solidness of bass player Yves Huts. Isaac Delahaye, known for his adventurous guitar riffs and praised for his tasty soloing. Mark Jansen, main songwriter of the band, rhythm guitarist & grunter. The classically trained pianist Coen Janssen, who is also responsible for all the choir arrangements. And last but not least frontwoman Simone Simons, who has an extremely diverse, unique and enchanting voice. ‘Requiem for the Indifferent' is proof that this sextet is on a constant quest for renewal and that only the best is good enough. The album title refers to the end of an era. Mankind can no longer stick their head in the sand for the things that are happening around us: tensions between different religions and cultures, wars, natural disasters, a huge financial crisis. As we are all connected; the universe, the earth, nature, animals and human beings, this period in time will be the prelude to the end for those who still don't want to, or simply won't see it. A requiem for the indifferent but also a possibility for a new beginning with great new chances.Once again, EPICA produced the new album along with Sascha Paeth (AVANTASIA, KAMELOT) at the Gate Studio in Wolfsburg, Germany.'Requiem of the Indifferent' will be released on the 9th of March 2012 (13th of March in the US), after which the band will start promoting the album with a big production world tour.

Album:

Epica is the best Symphonic Gothic Metal band in the world today. Simone Simons has a beautiful voice that excels in both the operatic and metal styling of this band. The growls only add to the beauty of their music. This retrospect contains 2DVD's and 3 CD's. For the fan this is a must have. For the person who has never heard Epica this is a good way to get to know their music. I highly recommend it!

Album:

" Much earlier than expected return Epica after pregnancy break , The Quantum Enigma ' back - and yes, the little interruption has the Dutch audible done well . Although Epica play back their ( in parts ) intricate symphonic metal , but affects the entire work fresh and entschlackter . You hear only the opener , The Second Stone ' or the following , The Essence Of Silence ' to: Locker , fuzzy, beautiful shot from the hip , without a lot of frills ( for Epica ratios) . Nevertheless, the bombast is not too short , but he is put to better use . Thus, in the fantastic , Reverence - Living In The Heart ', already on a par with such classics as , Terra Sancta now ' can join or similar exploits .... Bottom line , we can say that , The Quantum Enigma ' is so far the best Epica album . Point . "METAL HAMMER 6/7

" Epica manifest once again that they have long since climbed the symphonic metal throne, monumental , majestic and melodic than anything previously seen before . Indisputable : This is epic power in perfection " SONIC SEDUCER !

Album:

Album contains acoustic bonus CD plus instrumental version of the album on additional bonus CD.A band that has enjoyed as much worldwide success and acclaim as EPICA should have every right to rest on their laurels and stick to the proverbial "winning formula". And yet, as their fans across the globe are well aware, EPICA has never been a band to play it safe, and they've never made the same album twice. EPICA has earned its reputation as one of the foremost symphonic metal bands by repeatedly shattering expectations and pushing the very limits in the genre. This spring, EPICA will proudly unveil the next stage of their ongoing musical evolution: »The Quantum Enigma«, their sixth full length studio album. This is EPICA like you've never heard them before: »The Quantum Enigma« sounds larger than life, expertly mixing devilishly sharp guitars, angelic choruses, evocative synthesizers, mindboggling drum work, and of course, another soaring vocal performance from Simone Simons. »The Quantum Enigma« is simultaneously the band's most intense and emotional release to date.Mark Jansen credits increased collaboration between members of the band which also includes lead guitarist Isaac Delahaye, keyboardist Coen Janssen, drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek, bassist Rob van der Loo, as a key factor in the creation of what is surely EPICA's edgiest, most forward thinking album yet: "More than any of our previous albums, »The Quantum Enigma« is the result of a group effort. Even though the basic components of each song were still written by individual band members, we sat together to start working on the material as a solid team early in the process, playing the songs in a live setting and dive into the microscopic (quantum) world of the little details, comparing dozens of amps, snares, and mics in order to find the sound that would be able to beat all of our previous albums. A time consuming experience, but the only way to reach our ultimate goal: creating the album that could lift EPICA up to the next level."The band's quest to annihilate artistic stagnation continued with their choice of behind the scenes collaborators: after five albums of successfully working with producer Sascha Paeth (who still played an important role during the preproduction sessions), EPICA opted to record »The Quantum Enigma« with the up-and-coming Joost van den Broek at Sandlane Recording Facilities in the Netherlands. "After many years, there comes a point at which you want to try out some new methods in order to keep yourself fully motivated, and to refresh your music and mind. This was such a turning point for us. It was time to leave our comfort zone in order to explore new horizons. In producer Joost van den Broek, we found the guy who was able to get the best out of us with his patience, gurulike skills and loads of energy."»The Quantum Enigma« also marks the first collaboration between EPICA and mixer Jacob Hansen (VOLBEAT, HATESPHERE, AMARANTHE). "Jacob really impressed us by giving the band a massive sound without compromising on all the symphonic and orchestral elements which color our music. Every detail finds its way into a perfectly balanced mix, and makes EPICA sound raw and overwhelming.”Given the boundary defying nature of the music on »The Quantum Enigma«, it's appropriate that the album's lyrics were inspired by the most mind bending scientific proof in all of quantum physics: one that posits that our physical environment is directly influenced by our consciousness. We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are. Ultimately, everything in the universe is energy and energy is influenced by the mind. Therefore the mind creates and controls reality. These heady themes reflect in the lyrics of both Mark Jansen and Simone Simons, the latter of whom calls »The Quantum Enigma« “an exploration of the subconscious mind”. Those lyrical concepts, combined with the undeniable power of the music, ensure that »The Quantum Enigma« is not just an album it's an experience.»The Quantum Enigma« will be released on the 2nd of May 2014 in Europe and on the 13th of May in North America via Nuclear Blast Records. EPICA plans to support its release with plenty of touring, once again bringing their grandiose, unforgettable live show to fans across the globe.

Album:

Two years after the monumentally massive splendour of The Phantom Agony (2003), Epica released their majestic successor Consign to Oblivion. On this album, inspired by the Mayan culture, the group around mezzo-soprano Simone Simons and guitarist Mark Jansen broke new ground. The music was getting more accessible and the variety of the compositions grew, ranging from unadulterated gothic-metal to ballads. “This album marks Epica’s growth into maturity”, Mark Jansen stated. “This is the album I always wanted to make. Now we’ve finally had the opportunity and the capacity to realize a project like this.”The album offers an overwhelming mix of gothic metal and orchestral arrangements based on epic filmscores: sparkling, glamorous, fierce, compelling and very versatile. Specially for this re-release the complete album comes enhanced with previously unreleased orchestral versions of all songs. On Consign to Oblivion Epica show themselves as an imposing and tightly-knit rock machine with almost Wagnerian power, proving in all aspects why the band is regarded as the vanguard of the international female fronted gothic-metal scene. A glorious album by a great band, including 16 bonus tracks, like the singles Solitary Ground and Quietus.

Album:

Dutch symphonic metallers EPICA will release their seventh studio album, "The Holographic Principle" on September 30 via Nuclear Blast. The CD was produced by Joost van der Broek at Sandlane Recording Facilities and was mixed by Jacob Hansen (VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION). The cover artwork was created by Stefan Heilemann. The band commented: "'The Holographic Principle' deals with the near future wherein virtual reality has taken off and allows people to create their own virtual worlds which can't be distinguished from 'reality as we know it.' This raises the question whether our current reality is a kind of virtual reality on itself, a hologram. This implies the existence of a higher reality which we currently do not have access to. The lyrics challenge you to think out of the box, to reconsider everything you thought to know for sure and to be open-minded towards recent revolutions in science. Fasten your seat belts and get ready for a ride as nothing appears to be what it seems in our holographic universe."Speaking to Spark TV, which is part of the Czech monthly magazine Spark, EPICA singer Simone Simons stated about the follow-up to 2014's "The Quantum Enigma": "It's a huge amount of songs, it's a lot of information, it's a lot to take in, but we put everything in this record and we hope that it will pay off and that the people will feel what we feel when we listen to it."She added: "Since 'The Quantum Enigma' was received so well, we set the bar so high, but we accepted the challenge to make an even better record. And we've done everything bigger than before — we had more orchestra, a bigger choir. We had so many different instruments — real, live instruments. Vocally, I put everything in the record that I can possibly do, and I'm very pleased with it."According to Simone, she has once again experimented a bit with her vocal approach on the new album. "With each record, I try to get the best out," she said. "And Joost [van den Broek], our producer, he's also very good at getting everything out of me. And the songs themselves, they just ask for a lot of variation in the vocal style. And I do opera, rock, pop, and in the ballads you hear the really soft voice. And, yeah, I can belt out some high notes as well."Even though "The Holographic Principle" is one of EPICA's most ambitious offerings to date, the album doesn't sacrifice any of its instant appeal, something which Simone says was intentional. "I think it needs to be all in balance," she said. "We are, in heart, a metal band going in the symphonic direction. The orchestration, the choir is a little bit like the seventh and eighth bandmember of EPICA, and that's something we'll always keep in there. And the choir parts are often very catchy, the choruses are very catchy. But on this record, besides having catchy melodies, we also wanted to have really groovy vocal lines. And that's something that we worked on as well; we changed up some things to make it less predictable."One of the aspects of EPICA's sound which has been enhanced on "The Holographic Principle" is the growling vocal style of EPICA guitarist and main songwriter Mark Jansen. "Well, it's Mark and it's actually our drummer as well," Simone said. "Mark is the main grunter, and our drummer, Ariën [van Weesenbeek], has a really nice, thick sound. So I don't know if he sang all the grunt parts as well, if he doubled them with Mark, but them together makes a totally new grunt sound, and I like it. Also, it changes it up a bit. Mark can do also really low grunts, he can do screams, and Ariën really has that deep sound to it."Simone also praised the contributions of EPICA guitarist Isaac Delahaye, who came into the band in 2009. "The guitars are definitely more brutal," she said. "Also in the mix, the melodies, the grooves, and I think that ever since Isaac joined the band, not only as a songwriter but also the guitars have been lifted to a different level, and have become more interesting to listen to, I find myself. So I'm a big fan of his guitar work and also his songwriting."

Album:

Founded in 2002, Dutch Symphonic Metal sextet Epica have been weaving intensely beautiful, sonic tales for the past fifteen years. With seven studio albums to their credit – from 2003’s The Phantom Agony to 2016’s The Holographic Principle – Epica have become known for quality Metal with a massive sound. Currently on tour in North America with Lacuna Coil, Insomnium, and Elantris, Epica are poised to release an addendum to The Holographic Principle, the six-song EP The Solace System, which arrives Friday, September 1st via Nuclear Blast Records.Though they had enough fabulous material available from The Holographic Principle sessions to release a double-disc, Epica – Vocalist Simone Simons, Guitarist/Dirty Vocalist Mark Jansen, Guitarist Isaac Delahaye, Bassist Rob van der Loo, Drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek, and Keyboardist Coen Janssen – instead chose to release a single disc followed by this EP. “The Solace System” kicks off its namesake EP with the striking and splendid Symphonic Metal sound that fans expect from Epica. Simons’ voice is flawless and the melodies here are to die for, leading the band into “Fight Your Demons.” Blistering Metal guitars sit alongside stunning, exquisitely haunting synth-work – and those wonderfully spectacular vocals from Simon – creating a multi-layered sound that is massive here. As with many of Symphonic Metal’s greatest vocalists, Simons could stand alongside, say, the marvelous Sarah Brightman on a Broadway stage and hold her own with ease.“Architect of Light” builds a luscious story that weaves orchestral and choral elements through Simons’ marvelous vocals and Jansen’s darkly ominous growls; creating a sound that is fully enormous, lusciously evocative, and worthy of a the next high-budget Fantasy film. Next, incredibly heavy bass work from van der Loo blends with racing Metal guitars from Jansen and Delahaye to create the approach of “Wheel of Destiny.” This nearly six-minute long epic is a novel unto itself, a stunning display of what Symphonic Metal should be: heavy and light, blistering and beautiful. “We have to earn the weight of truth,” Simons chants as Jansen utters a stream of ominous growls. A racing guitar solo and those amazing sonic layers help to paint the fantastical picture that is Epica. The gorgeously delicate “Immortal Melancholy” dials it down to a largely acoustic romp that sounds like a dance with the angels in melancholic glory, while, at over six-minutes in duration, “Decoded Poetry” is the lengthiest and final offering on the EP. Soaring guitars sit alongside pummeling rhythms and jackhammering drums that race the band into Jansen’s rough vocal offerings, which are highlighted here and a superb complement to Simons’ angelic operatics; furthering the darkness inherent in this story and creating an outstanding denouement to this collection. With The Solace System, Epica have woven a glorious spell that serves as the perfect addendum to their 2016 hit release, The Holographic Principle. A continuation that is both intensely beautiful and immaculate, these six songs are a prime example of what it means to be Symphonic Metal with immense artistic talent and heart.

Published for the Japanese market only, the EP consists of four reinterpretations of the initials of the soul's opening The attack of the giants and the corresponding instrumental versions.

Album:

For many years now, EPICA have been riding the high waves of success, delivering stunning album after stunning album, embarking on massive tour endeavours covering the whole globe time and time again. In 2019, however, after an impressive 17 years on the fast lane, the Dutch symphonic metal titans take a step back. To take a break and a deep breath, yes. But even more so to reflect on what got them to this point in the first place. The answer to that is easy. Exactly ten years ago, EPICA released what is today widely regarded as their breakthrough album. While being far from a newcomer back then – with three impressive albums, a soundtrack record and a live orchestra project under their belts – the release of »Design Your Universe« marked the watershed between a fairly well-known symphonic metal band with high ambitions and an international phenomenon of great prowess. With striking momentum and a carefully maintained balance between epic metal grandeur and monumental orchestral soundscapes, between pure cinematic bombast and teeth-clenching heaviness, between Mark Jansen’s abysmal grunts and Simone Simons’s vocal force of nature, »Design Your Universe« stormed the charts all over Europe and took the band onto an altogether different level. To this day, »Design Your Universe« is an album cherished by band, fans and critics alike, making its tenth anniversary the perfect occasion for a lavish re-release. “I had the feeling that we were creating something special”, founder Mark Jansen remembers of the recording process. Today, it’s one of his favourite EPICA records. “Plus, it had the best sound we ever accomplished to this day.” Courtesy of long-time producer and friend Sascha Paeth, »Design Your Universe« marked not only a new musical peak; it featured such a stunning production that Jansen was even sceptical of re-mixing it in the studio for this re-release. “The sound is brilliant, so why change it?”, he laughs. In the end, they agreed on staying very close to the original sound, carefully twisting some knobs here and there to introduce the seminal record to the digital era. “Back in 2009, albums still were compressed a lot due to the ongoing loudness war in metal”, he recalls. “Today, you have more room for the mixing process again, making the whole music sound more dynamic.”New techniques or not: Boy, did these songs age well! Modern classics in their own right, ‘Martyr of the Free Word’, ‘Unleashed’, power ballad ‘Tides of Time’ or the unforgettable epic ‘Design Your Universe’ have long since earned their places in the throne room of symphonic metal. “It was really nice to somewhat re-live the making of the album”, Jansen says. “My favourite song was and still is ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. It has all the elements EPICA stood for at the time, but even more so because it is dedicated to my grandmother who passed away while we were recording this album. It will always have a special meaning to me.” And not only to him. “Mark’s grandmother was a very important figure for the whole band”, Simone Simons says. “Her house was our rehearsal space from the beginning of EPICA. She always greeted us with a smile and made sure we had everything we needed.” Simons dedicated ‘Tides of Time’ to her, making it a very emotional album for EPICA.But »Design Your Universe« was even more than that. It is the record that laid the foundation for their future success: Their first album with Ariën van Weesenbeek as their new permanent drummer, Isaac Delahaye as their new guitarist and artwork alchemist Stefan Heilemann (Heilemania) as their visual sidekick, EPICA for the first time had all the ingredients that were about to propel the trailblazers right to the top. “Isaac literally joined the band when we were on the brink of entering the studio”, Jansen recalls. “He had very little time to contribute to the album, and yet he did a massive job working on the guitars with me. He clearly lifted the songs to another level. So maybe it was even an advantage that time was that limited. We couldn’t overthink things. I have the feeling it had to be like that.”Sometimes, it just all falls into place. »Design Your Universe« is one of those rare cases were everything simply seems to click, where everything happens just the way it is supposed to be. “A record is a success when it always triggers the same emotions – no matter how old it is. And these songs still pierce my heart through and through”, Simons states. Needless to say, it is also her stellar vocal performance on this one that left a permanent mark on the genre of symphonic metal. “I was more than happy with how my vocals turned out in the studio”, she nods. “I was able to do yet another step forward which is something I always try to accomplish. There’s just no guarantee if you will succeed.”.She did. The band did. And now, ten years after the birth of this new figurehead of symphonic metal, Mark Jansen (rhythm guitar, vocals), Simone Simons (vocals), Isaac Delahaye (guitar), Rob van der Loo (bass), Coen Janssen (keyboards, synthesizer, piano) and Ariën van Weesenbeek (drums) revisit the iconic album, additionally gracing the re-release with five sublime acoustic versions of some of the most beloved songs. “We were astonished by how well the tracks sounded and really enjoyed making them. They bring something new to the table”, Jansen beams. Simone adds: “I loved doing these acoustic versions. I really had the best time! I mean, turning a heavy monster like ‘Martyr of the Free Word’ into a ballad simply shows how strong the song really is.” This, of course, holds true for every tiny fraction of the 74 minutes and 50 seconds of »Design Your Universe«. Pure symphonic bliss, executed on the highest level. Or, to quote some Marvel Comics lore: Every hero has his origin story. This is theirs. A commanding game changer as epic and monumental as it was ten years ago.

Album:

For many years now, the comparative of epic has simply been EPICA. Since their formation in 2002 and their quick ascension to stalwarts of symphonic metal noblesse with trailblazing masterpieces “The Divine Conspiracy” (2007) or “Requiem for the Indifferent” (2012), Dutch metal titans only knew one way: Up. Especially with their last three releases “The Quantum Enigma”, “The Holographic Principle” and this years’ “Omega”, forming a metaphysical trilogy that’s both alpha and omega of all things symphonic metal, EPICA became rightful monarchs of a genre they themselves helped made become a global phenomenon.Yet, as every other band, EPICA couldn’t take their latest installment of breathtaking cinematic grandeur to the seven corners of the world as they would have normally done. You know why. Thus, plans have been made and visions fulfilled to produce a once-in-a-lifetime event that couldn’t be further away from yet another streaming show. What EPICA unleashed upon the world on Saturday, June 12th,2021, was a monument to their music, their career, and their enduring legacy as forebears of a whole genre. Now finally being released on Blu-ray and DVDand various audio formats, “Omega Alive” is the EPICA show of your wildest dreams, brought to life by blood, sweat, tears and a healthy dose of megalomania. Think Marvel meeting Cirque de Soleil in a Tim Burton universe.

Album:

Always pushing forward, always aiming higher: In the 20 years of their existence, EPICA have never shied away from challenges, twists and turns, weathering every storm and pushing the symphonic metal genre to heights no one even dared to believe in. Since 2002, the band surrounding global metal icon Simone Simons and her long-time musical partner Mark Jansen have released eight highly innovative and cinematic albums, have toured the world over and have left their mark as one of metal’s most prolific, most cherished and most admired success stories forever. With "The Alchemy Project", EPICA set another highlight in the band's 20th anniversary year! Graced by a vivid and witty artwork by graphic wizard Heilemania, EPICA embark on a journey through seven extraordinary new songs. Co-written and performed with diverse guests ranging from extremists like Fleshgod Apocalypse, Niilo Sevänen (Insomnium) and Björn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork) via melodic masters like Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), keyboard legend Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep) or Roel van Helden (Powerwolf) to a oncein-a-lifetime song with Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur, EPICA have really outdone themselves once again. The result is a mind-bending release that even surpasses the usual broad scope of an EPICA record.

Album:

Recorded live at Paradiso, Amsterdam, the Netherlands on the 4th of May, 2006.The Red-Light District in Amsterdam is famous for its…well… extracurricular activities as well as recently qualified undergraduates celebrating their release into the wide world by indulging in the pleasures of the flesh. Nestled in this district is Paradiso one of the world’s most notorious clubs, a venue steeped in rock and metal history and in 2006 Epica stepped onto its stages to perform a monstrous set that has now been released as ‘Live at Paradiso’.For Epica, this was one of their defining moments and it is a wonder how ‘Live at Paradiso’ has never been released before. Thankfully, it has been saved for a decent occasion, the bands 20th anniversary and it shows Epica on fine form as one of the best symphonic metal bands out there. The band is tighter than a submarine door with Simone Simons firing on all cylinders as she soars higher than The Byrds as the band crush it all around with Mark Jansen providing some fantastically contrasting harsh vocals. At just under two hours spread across two discs, this is quite possibly the ultimate experience of early Epica without getting into a time machine. Furthermore, this will also come with Blu-Ray that will add a visual element to your audio goodness. However, if you have no interest in live albums or symphonic metal, there is nothing here that will cause a conversion to the cause, but for those fans of Epica who love to get their paws on everything, they’ll find a great live album and a snapshot in time of Epica on the brink of massive success.
