Album:

HIBRIA is considered to be one of the best bands to have come from Porto Alegre, Brazil; they were formed in 1996 and released their debut album “Defying The Rules” in 2004 to much great ratings, currently holding a rating of 90% of 12 reviews in the Metal Archives website. Since 2004 they have released two more studio albums and one live album, recorded at Japan. Now in 2013 they release their fourth album titled “Silent Revenge”.“Silent Revenge” was inspired by the Argentine film “The Secret in Their Eyes”, a psychological thriller that deals with loss, grief, unfulfilled desires and revenge, and is filled with Power Metal gems that makes you feel like you are being punched in the face by a ten ton hammer. The star of this album is Iuri Sanson, who is by far one of the best singers and frontmen of the Brazilian scene, this guy has an amazing set of pipes on him, he screams like a banshee throughout the whole album with special mention being made to self-titled song “Silent Revenge” and “Silence Will Make You Suffer” and the more melodic quasi-ballad “Shall I Keep on Burning”.This album was released in June, 26th back in Japan and as of July, 2nd it held the second position in total sales in the store HMV, losing only to SABBATH’s “13”, and is no surprise because this album deserves it, it is an excellent record that helps cement HIBRIA as one of the most important bands of the Brazilian scene.

Album:

New Canadian label issuing the fifth album by Brazilian metallers who will undertake an extensive tour before/after they play ProgPower USA this Fall. While many call them power metal (and past efforts gracing these ears have squarely fallen within that realm), there's a more polished sound emanating from Hibria, with a nod to traditional metal and a dash of American power glam, like classic Skid Row. Apart from the helium ingesting vocals and trumpet fanfares, the urgent opener "Pain" (all ten cuts sporting one-word titles) could have been off Slaves To The Grind.Similar brass horn/sax flourishes can be heard on the otherwise modern, stop-start "Ashamed" and the bonus track, a karaoke version of "Pain", is a uptown horn laced take on funk! "Tightrope" showcases more aggressive, oft staccato riffing, guitars, but there's a tunefulness to the melodies that almost belies metal constructs. Aside from an atypical ending, the infectious "Ghosts" sounds like something from '80s MTV. Guest female vocals on "Fame" are courtesy of Crucified Barbara's Mia Coldheart. "Legacy" has brief moments of shouted (atonal) vocals and the proper disc ending "Words" repeatedly drops the f-bomb. Interested to hear how some of this translates live.

Album:

Has it really been 20 years since Hibria formed? Many of us discovered them with the release of their explosive and monumental 2004 debut, Defying The Rules, which was already a culmination of several years' hard work and demo releases. Aside from making us feel old (I mean, I still consider Hibria to be the energetic young kids of heavy metal), these Brazilians have put together a little anniversary gift for us fans: three excellent new tunes and four top-notch live performances of previous favorites. Hibria has always taken classic heavy metal and enjoyed the hell out of it, and XX is no exception. By using their massive technical ability to explore the ins-and-outs of their music, they're never afraid to play also with power metal, funk, hints of surf guitar, blues, and other such related territory, while staying close to the foundation of classic heavy metal. Even though this is not a traditional full-length record, that doesn't mean that anyone skimped on quality. The three new pieces would shine on any of Hibria's albums, especially the fun and funky opener, "Leading Lady." Kicking off XX with a whimsical guitar and building in layers and intensity, "Leading Lady" is jazzy, heavy, and dare I say, danceable, inspiring air-guitars and air-drums like never before. The second half of XX is 4 live tracks; excellent recordings of well-picked songs such as the dark "Tightrope" and the neck-breaker "Tiger Punch." These all show how much of the band's infectious energy translates from the studio to the stage. Enjoying this release so much has really made me go back and revisit Hibria's 20-year journey. I easily fell in love with Defying The Rules, and while it had sentimental value that always kept it on top of their subsequent records for me, I've been relishing this time going back and re-discovering the other high-energy gems in their growing catalogue. Let this anniversary be an opportunity for you to do the same, or to discover them for the first time.On 2011's Blind Ride we were treated to one of Hibria's only cover songs: Frank Sinatra's "I'm Gonna Live Till I Die." Hibria realizes that this song embodies so much metal spirit (I mean, just read the title). It's also become one of the first things that come to mind when I think of the band: after 20 years they are still masters of their instruments, playing with both incredible skill and incredible energy, showing no signs of stopping. They are living one hell of a legacy, living until they die. If you're in Canada or the northern United States, catch Hibria on tour this month and rock out for me. XX comes out tomorrow; pre-order now via Test Your Metal Records.

Album:

Brazilian power metallers Hibria have released an official video for "Moving Ground", the title track of the band's new album, out February 28th in Japan via King Records. Watch the clip below. The new album features cover artwork by Tiago Masseti.Hibria rolls their speed/power metal sound further past the bluesy/rock thing from the previous release, picking up further modern sounds, like rolling a wadded sticky mass, picking up whatever it haphazardly rolls over. There's plenty of speed, quick drum beats, and flashy guitar leads, but many stylistic deviations into more of a groove, thrash, and almost nu-metal sound. Some verse riffs are barebones rock-type riffs, and distorted vocals are thrown over top, in a very nu-metal way. The start of the first track starts just like it could be the pure speed/power metal of their well-regarded Defying the Rules, but then moves into some more of that blues-rock sound from the EP they put out before this. The following track will at some point move into groove metal, holding on to some of those blues sounding chord changes. Scream and Shout uses abundant tambourine (yes, tambourine!) in the drum beat with more distorted vocals and gang vocals. There's a lot of styles here, and not a one of them aside from their original speedy power metal lands a hit. Why start out with a ripping speed metal riff, complete with cool, chunky bass licks, just to fall into a bland groove metal riff? Why throw in these boring bluesy riffs? "So Damn Unkind" has a bassline that stylistically sounds like the Seinfeld theme. There are riffs here that recall Megadeth, or even Mystic Prophecy, but they feel, much like the lesser styles, to be patchwork. Just slapped on. It's just a revolving door of bad ideas.

Album:

Hibria is back and with everything! The new work of the band, the seventh studio album, "Me7amorphosis", has arrived! The wait was long, but it was worth every second!I confess that when the band had that dismantled a few years ago, I was very worried, staying only the guitarist Abel Camargo, and in my mind the question came: Is it the end of Hibria? In my opinion, one of the greatest bands in the history of Brazilian heavy metal. The end couldn't be like that, the "Gods of Rock" wouldn't let this beautiful story end like that. After that, the great news came, the band would continue with new members. Now another question came to me: would the new members manage to keep Hibria at the level it was? Then the warrior and tireless Abel Camargo rolled up his sleeves and went to fight. I was already a fan of this guy, but everything he went through, the work he did to keep the band going, the work of choosing the new members, made me a much bigger fan of Abel. I can only say to him, "Thank you Abel!!!"With the new members being announced, I saw that Abel was not kidding, I confess that some chosen were musicians unknown to me, but after hearing and seeing the auditions, there I was sure that Hibria would come back and with great strength, as they say, with blood in the eyes. The debut show of the new line-up came, in Porto Alegre/RS, at the end of 2019. There everything I was thinking was confirmed, HIBRIA IS BACK AND STRONGER THAN EVER! I watched live, the rebirth of one of the biggest metal bands in Brazil. Now the new album is missing, for Hibria to show all its strength and power. And for our joy, the wait is over, the new work of the band has arrived, the wait was long, but I'm sure it was worth every second of this wait. I'm sorry for those who read this review, I'll try to separate the fan from the critic, I confess it won't be easy, but I hope everybody understands me.Hibria's new work is called Me7amorphosis, seventh studio album, and will be released on February 25th in Brazil and February 23rd in Japan. The new work starts with "War Cry", and right away it will thrill the fans of the band. A triumphant entrance and showing that Hibria is back to its rightful place, on the level of the biggest metal bands of Brazil. A heavy beginning, the essence of the group seems perpetual. And extremely incredible the musical competence of this new formation."Shine" is fast and heavy, with an incredible work of the guitars of Abel and Bruno, showing a perfect interplay and an unusual weight, of the kitchen formed by Thiago Baumgarten (bass) and "monster" Otavio Quiroga (drums)."Meaning of Life" is calm and beautiful, one that chills, with a lyric that will make us think a lot, before we give up something in our aim, we should think that life doesn't need to be perfect, we should live as it really is. Absolute prominence for the interpretation and voice of Victor Emeka, who shows here that today is the best vocalist in Brazil, in my opinion, ahead of many big names we have around. It?s beautiful to hear Emeka singing! In the sequence we have an "old" known, "Fearless Will", which had already been presented in 2019, which at the time left us with that "water in the mouth"."I Am So Lonely", do you want weight? Here you will have weight! The band is too perfect in this song. Powerful guitars, destroying kitchen and Emeka's vocals perfect as always. I really want to see this song live."Raging Machine", could very well be called the band's current moment: "Furious Machine". Better definition impossible for Hibria. Here, Quiroga simply destroys his drums, impressive his work, on this band's album. And the warrior Abel? I don't need to say that he simply gives a class in this song. One of the great Brazilian guitar players and the most "guilty" for the current moment the band is living, as I said before: Thanks Abel!!!The next one is one more known by us, the band released it recently on their social networks, I'm talking about "Skyline of the Soul", here we have Hibria with their old essence and power. Incredible is the word to define it."The Racer", starts at high speed and here the band runs, runs, to their deepest dreams, as the lyrics say. Lyrics that many people will see themselves, because we live moments like this in our lives. Here the guitars are once again the highlight, the duo Abel and Godinho, has everything to become one of the biggest duos in Brazil. We could not miss the special guests, we can say very special, and in "Tribal Mark", we have "only" Iuri Sanson, Diego Kasper and Renato Osorio, important names in the history of the band. It is beautiful to see the participation of each one in this song. Once in Hibria, always in Hibria. It was fantastic!Does a work like this have to finish? Unfortunately it does! And the best way to close the album and with a golden key is called "A Storm to Heal". A perfect end, with a perfect band, finishing a very high level work, with powerful riffs, remarkable songs and of course, a PERFECT work!I finish this review with a big smile stamped on my face and with a lot of emotion, because I had the privilege of seeing and hearing the resurgence of one of the biggest bands of the Brazilian Metal history and today, a band with blood in our eyes, with lust, with the old Hibria style back, for our joy. Now we have to wait to see all this live. And the band?Victor Emeka fit perfectly in the band, I can't imagine the band, today, with another vocalist. He has an unusual talent, charisma to spare and besides that, he was responsible for the production of the lyric video and the cover of Me7amorphosis' first single, Skyline of the Soul, besides other visual pieces of HIBRIA. He is also a publicist and at Me7a he worked as a Creative and Art Director.Abel Camargo, simply the greatest responsible for this return of Hibria. Phenomenal guitar player, and co-founder of HIBRIA, he is one of the composers, lyricists and also executive producer of Me7a, together with the band's manager Ramsés Vidor, from Voiza Records. After some other bassists passed through this Hibria's comeback, in my opinion, the band got right in choosing Thiago Baumgarten, listen to the album and you'll know what I'm talking about, he is a revelation in the Brazilian metal. Also shares the composition of the lyrics of Skyline of the Soul the vocalist Victor Emeka. The other guitar of the band is in the hands of Bruno Godinho. He makes the guitar duo with Abel Camargo and many already know him for his excellent work as a scholar of the six strings, as an artist and teacher. On this album Godinho, in addition to settling in as a guitarist, has incorporated the roles of composer and music producer. As the band said, "Godinho was like the coach of our team inside the studio, organising and guiding the work with the songs so that things came out perfectly."And what about the "Monster" Otávio Quiroga? Besides taking over HIBRIA's drums in Me7amorphosis, he was responsible for the percussions and also contributed with backing vocals in the new album, bringing a mix of influences. In my opinion, he is nowadays one of the best drummers of the new generation in Brazil, he did a fantastic job in this new album of the band. He has a lot of ground ahead of him, I am sure that soon he will be in the list of the best drummers in Brazil, beating a lot of great ones. Keep this name.Me7amorphosis is another strong candidate to the best album of 2022, an album that showed the return and rebirth of Hibria. For those who are fans like me, it's a reason for joy and excitement. ETERNAL LIFE TO HIBRIA!
