Bio:

3rd album by the Swedish Euro-power/speed metal masters. For fans of Blind Guardian, Running Wild, Lost Horizon, Riot (Thundersteel circa), Grave Digger, etc.Swedish power metal band, Rocka Rollas, are a fairly well established act, and their third album, “The Road To Destruction”, is one that should leave a mark, with good musicianship and a good sense of songwriting. From the intro, “The Gathering”, you know this is going to be some heavy, yet melodic stuff, with some great guitar melodies and an awesome build up. Then with the first proper track, “Curse Of Blood”, we are served with some straight up Power Metal with lots of energy and fast technical riffage, meeting some great basslines. The chorus has some awesome vocal layering with some great guitar playing backing it.The album has a lot of great moments, from the mid tempo marching sound of “Firefall”, which has an awesome chanting chorus, to faster tracks like “A Wave Of Firestorms”, which again has a great chorus, topped with some fantastic lead guitar as well. The album doesn’t really let you get much of a breather, apart from small breaks and intros; it’s all quite full on power metal stuff, which is by no means a bad thing, it’s a full frontal assault throughout and that definitely suits this band just fine!My highlight from the album is probably “Darkheart”, which for me encapsulates perfectly the sound of this band, with plenty of fast catchy riffs and a really powerful chorus! The album finishes on a MAGNUM cover, “Kingdom Of Madness”. Gone are the flutes and acoustic guitars here; the band injects their own energy and style into this, making the riffs a bit heavier and adding some mad drums! It’s also a lot shorter too.The production is pretty spot on for power metal, with lots of layered guitars working well together and some great vocal sounds in the mix. The bass is actually audible, which is nice, and the drums have plenty of punch.“The Road To Destruction” is a pretty good release from Rocka Rollas. The band has a great sense of melody that you can hear throughout each and every song, and the choruses are exactly what they need to be; impressive and powerful. They aren’t breaking any boundaries, but they do what they do VERY well. This is an album worth checking out for sure.

Album:

All good things must come to an end and, unfortunately, this includes the Rocka Rollas, the epic power/speed metal band led by Sweden's Cederick "Ced" Forsberg, the man of a thousand metal bands. The Rocka Rollas have released four studio albums and an EP since their formation a decade ago, but Ced has announced that their fifth and latest full length release, 2018's Celtic Kings, will be their swan song.Actually, Cederick began writing and demoing material for Celtic Kings in bits and pieces as far back as 2011. The bulk of this album was recorded in 2016, but Ced put the project on ice at that point due to the difficulties of maintaining a stable band lineup. Ced announced that the disc would eventually be finished and released when he could find the right vocalist and moved on to work on albums for his other projects like Cloven Altar and Blazon Stone. When he decided it was time to complete Celtic Kings, it turned out that the most suitable singer for the album was... Cederick himself! Indeed, Ced takes over the mic on Celtic Kings in addition to his guitar playing duties, joined by additional guitarist Emil Westin-Skogh (who's been a Rocka Rollla since 2014's The Road to Destruction) and one-man rhythm section Rolvert Gunnarson on bass and drums. It's always a bummer to hear about a good band going bust, but after numerous spins of Celtic Kings, I have to say, they are definitely going out at the top of their game!If you're familiar with the Rocka Rollas' previous work, rest assured that they aren't throwing any sonic curve balls on Celtic Kings. They're still hyperactive, epic speed/power metal, taking the best bits of early Blind Guardian and Walls of Jericho-era Helloween, adding some crunch from Accept and Grave Digger, and throwing it all into a blender. This is the first time I've heard Cederick sing and, though his high-pitched squawk sounded awkward at first, by the time he hit the chorus of the first song ("The Price of Vengeance") I found myself wondering what took him this long to step up to the microphone. The man's obviously got pipes! During the verses, his vocal delivery reminded me of the rough-n-ready Jason McMaster (WatchTower, Dangerous Toys, Ignitor) but when he goes for one of those trademark oh-so-power-metal high-pitched wails, look out, he'll blow anything that isn't nailed down halfway across the room. I haven't heard helium screams like these since the heyday of the late, great Warrel Dane of Sanctuary and Nevermore. The man's voice fits this rough-n-ready speed metal like an armored glove. Color me impressed!Celtic Kings is packed with riff-laden ear candy from beginning to end. Amateur air-guitarists be warned, you may run the risk of contracting serious carpal tunnel syndrome if you try to keep up with the 1000-MPH guitar work on tracks like "From Blackened Skies" or "Fallen Gods."The album's centerpiece is its title track, a nearly fourteen-minute-long epic that features a host of guest vocalists, including Markus Sanneford (Palantir), Erik Forsberg (Blazon Stone), Therese Thomsson (Sadauk), and Joe Liszt (Ancient Empire). Each of these singers takes a different verse of this "Braveheart" style war story that starts out slow n' moody and slowly builds into a jaw-droppingly awesome, explosive riff-fest. This track is the Rocka Rollas' equivalent of Iron Maiden's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" or Helloween's "Halloween," and was clearly a labor of love for Ced, who must have been trying to compose the ultimate Rocka Rollas signature tune. Mission accomplished! The album ends on a triumphant note with "Riding Wild," which finds Ced and company slamming the gas pedal to the floor one last time, with all-metal, all-the-time lyrics that would do Manowar proud ("Out from the darkness of monotone work and into the halls of the speed metal world!".Obviously, Celtic Kings doesn't re-write the speed metal history book but it's yet another strong release by the amazingly prolific Cederick. It's a shame that there will be no more Rocka Rollas material in the future, but at the same time it's comforting to know that Ced has a number of other bands/projects in the pipeline, so he won't be going away any time soon. His Running Wild inspired pirate-metal act Blazon Stone will make their first-ever live concert appearance at Germany's Headbangers Open Air Festival in Summer 2018, and the debut album by his Runelord project with vocalist Georgi Peychev (from Bulgarian thrashers The Outer Limits) should be released by Stormspell Records around the same time as Celtic Kings. For now, though, we must raise our flagons of ale high in the air and toast the end of the Rocka Rollas. Horns and hails, may they R.I.P., as long as speed metal lives on!

They aren’t breaking any boundaries, but they do what they do VERY well. This is an album worth checking out for sure.

Album:

This is the Definitive edition of the 2nd ROCKA ROLLAS' album "Metal Strikes Back" - finally made to sound as Cederick has envisioned it back in the day, but unable to fulfill the vision due to lack of proper equipment and recording experience.Originally recorded in 2012 and released in 2013. Completely re-arranged and re-recorded (except for lead vocals) during the great covid epidemic 2020. Revamped artwork and completely redesigned booklet. With "Conquer" EP added as bonus. It looks like we can add Swedish multi-instrumentalist and all around metal dude about town Cederick "Ced" Forsberg to the list of musicians who put their COVID-19 lockdown time to good use. Ced officially disbanded the Rocka Rollas after 2018's Celtic Kings album, in order to focus his energies on his new gig as the drummer for Crystal Viper... but then came the pandemic. Stuck in his home studio with plenty of time on his hands, Ced started going through his extensive back catalog and decided that some of his golden oldies could use a fresh coat of paint.Apparently Ced was never fully satisfied with the performances or the production quality on the Rocka Rollas' second album, 2013's Metal Strikes Back. So like George Lucas sprucing up his original Star Wars trilogy with new special effects and re-releasing them as "Special Edtions," Ced completely rebuilt Metal Strikes Back, re-recording everything except for Joe Liszt's lead vocal tracks, which were the only thing retained from the original sessions. Dubbed the "Definitive Edition," this new and improved version of Metal Strikes Back also includes the songs from 2012's Conquer EP and features striking new cover artwork. This special collector's item will be a limited edition of only 500 copies on CD, so you'll have to act fast if you want to add this one to your collection!Though I own several other Rocka Rollas discs, I had never heard the original version of Metal Strikes Back ... so I decided to treat this Definitive Edition as if it were a new release, since I didn't have the "old" one to compare it to. In a nutshell, if you're a fan of early '80s European speed/power metal like early Helloween, Grave Digger, Blind Guardian or Accept, you need some Rocka Rollas in your life. The lightning-fast guitar and drum work of "Blazing Wings" gets the album off to a blazing start indeed; it was interesting to hear Joe Liszt, who I'm familiar with as the vocalist for Ancient Empire, lending his pipes to something this frenzied. "Heavy Metal Strikes Back" keeps the heaviness quotient high, followed up by the awesomely-titled one-two punch of "Raging Cyborg" and "Warmachine From Hell," an excellent pair of speed metal cuts."Night of the Living Steel" starts off with some soothing guitar noodling but don't get too relaxed, because when the song truly kicks in you're in for a fast-n-furious, four on the floor thrash fest that is one of the album's highlights, followed up by the melodic but forceful "Metalive" and the bad-ass "Weaponizer."Rather than place all of the songs from the Conquer EP at the end of the album as bonus tracks, they're spread throughout the running order. The classy "Conquer" is my favorite of them, perched at the disc's halfway point, with the crunchy "Bloodbath" and the speedy instrumental "Steelwheeler" bringing up the rear. All in all, the twelve tracks on Metal Strikes Back: The Definitive Edition are solidly performed and packed with the classic Eighties metal feel that old school headbangers (like me) crave. Even if you already own the original pressing CDs of Metal Strikes Back and/or Conquer, these power metal jewels have been polished up impressively enough to make this Definitive Edition worth the re-buy.Collectors be advised, Metal Strikes Back was not the only one of Cederick's projects to get the re-recording treatment during lockdown - he also refurbished Return to Port Royal, the 2013 debut by his Running Wild-inspired pirate metal act, Blazon Stone. Like the Metal Strikes Back re-do, the Return to Port Royal Definitive Edition features completely re-recorded instrumental parts, re-tracked lead vocals, and updated artwork, and is strictly limited to 500 copies.
