Bio:
Wizard is a German power metal band, formed in 1989 by the drummer Sören "Snoppi" van Heek. The band was often called "Germany's answer to Manowar".Most of the band's lyrics are about battles, metal, war and steel. There are some exceptions, for example "Odin", which is a concept album about Norse mythology, "Goochan" which is a fantasy story about a witch (written by Volker Leson and author William B. Nuke), "Thor" which is also about Norse mythology and "... Of Wariwulfs and Bluotvarwes" which is about vampires and werewolves (written by Wizard and Andre Wiesler, German author).Wizard played at Wacken Open Air 2002,Bang Your Head!!! 2002, Keep It True 2004, Dokk'em Open Air 2006, Magic Circle Festival 2009 and is in the 2012 line-up of Hammerfest IV.In 2003 longtime guitarist Michael Maass quit the band because of health problems. Dano Boland became a new guitarist for the band in early 2004. In 2006 the band left the label Limb Music after three albums and joined the somewhat larger label Massacre Records, with a new album in mind to be released on January 27, 2007, titled Goochan. On May 18, 2007, Michael Maass returned to the band after a four-year break.
Album:
Power metallers Wizard will reissue four studio albums in 2015, via Limb Music. You can get your hands on new editions of Bound By Metal (1999), Head Of The Deceiver (2001), Odin (2003) and Magic Circle (2005), which have been remastered by Markus Teske (Vanden Plas, Mob Rules, Symphony X), and will include bonus tracks. Moreover, the Odin and Magic Circle reissues will also include bonus video clips. The image represented so clearly by the cover artwork of the Wizard output, “Bound By Metal” is transformed into ambitious music in the tracks of the album. The power of the album bursts through the seams, as the title of this tremendous album promises. Every one of the twelve original songs shine with great instrument techniques and memorable vocal lines. The German Epic Power Metal band WIZARD have been active since 1989 – so it stands to reason that as people discover their latest album material, the desire to enjoy the back catalog becomes stronger. Smaller labels like B.O. Records that released “Bound by Metal” in its original form are now deceased, which means that this re-issue from Limb Music is a welcome sight. Originally hitting the streets as their third studio album in 1999, I remember the struggle for anything in the Traditional, Power, and Epic genres of metal to gain respect and admiration beyond the die-hards as Extreme forms gained momentum – so 16 years later is as good a time as any to give this record another chance.Songs like the speedier “Hammer, Bow, Axe and Sword” plus “A Nice Day to Die” intertwine a lot of Teutonic trademarks in terms of catchy, galloping tempos and a solid wall of power riffing along with the majestic, multi-level piercing screams and singing prowess of vocalist Sven D’Anna. Many would probably be quick to say that there are a lot of MANOWAR qualities to their music- and I’d agree- but the musicianship and construction also adds some elements of GAMMA RAY and IRON SAVIOR to the mix. And you can’t go wrong with lyrical topics about warriors, gladiators, battlefields, and of course the praise of our almighty Metal! The material varies as well throughout the record – the almost 7 minute “Unicorn” has a nice back and forth epic anthem flow in terms of the drumming and occasional lead break additions from Michael Maass that recall “Flash of the Blade” / IRON MAIDEN while “Believe in Metal” has the requisite chanting chorus backgrounds for promoting sing-a-longs. The 3 bonus tracks include earlier material like “In the Sign of the Wizard” that has more of a demo quality production-wise compared to the album, but I find intriguing to see the development of WIZARD through the years. If you are unfamiliar with the band, “Bound by Metal” is a mighty place to start- and still one of their best albums in their wide catalog.
