Bio:

Founded by John Tsiakopoulos and Jim Kotsis in 2012, initially as a side project.Classic Heavy Metal attitude with NWOBHM and Doom epicness and melody. Also influenced from the occult, the Norse and epic mythology.Their debut album, Tales of the Ancient Ones, released on high-profile metal label No Remorse in October 2013, received very favorable reviews in the media and gained lots of praise amongst metalheads worldwide. All this surely added fuel to the band's engine. Preparations for the follow-up album started and, after a seven year wait, Land of Demise, featuring eight new tracks, was released in November 2020 (a limited CD version was released in December 2020).

Album:

Greek Black Soul Horde has more menace in its moniker than in its music. This is not to say that their second full-length Land of Demise lacks quality, bite or enjoyment while listening to it. Quite the contrary, but don’t expect the band to stick to their name literally and bare their inner darkness. Instead, not overburdened with unusual, out of left field, ideas, the Greeks steer their metal somewhere b/t classic old school and American power metal of the past two decades.Black Soul Horde gets it going from the very beginning and pretty much doesn’t stop. Opening riff of Stone Giants just breathes heavy metal, the song continues galloping away, guitar leads have additional vignettes in them, and the chorus is as epic as it gets. Energetic riffing continues throughout, while the band loves to indulge in muscular (Into the Badlands) or harmonized (Soulships) leads, and positions machine gun chord chopping next to anthemic moments (Troops of the Damned, Iron Will). These songs are like a brick building, all pieces even and similar, but laid together solidly and on familiar reliable foundation. Even in Soulships, where things get a little mystical with opening minute worth of arpeggios, and you may think a doomy slower change of tempo is coming, it doesn’t ... and things fall into the same galloping style. Fans of Iced Earth should be jumping aboard here, as well as in A Neverending Journey or The Frail and the Weak, the latter is nothing like its title, but instead having a powerful vibrating tremolo pulse.Vocally Black Soul Horde knows how to come up with the right hook in the chorus (Into the Badlands), and has some vocal duality and variation (Lord of All Darkness), but most of the time the vocals are higher in tone, are a little drawn out and floating above the music. This higher vocal pitch by Jim Kotsis brings out comparisons with Jag Panzer in Stone Giants or A Neverending Journey. A part Iced Earth, a part Jag Panzer and a little bit of Battleroar for the Greek epic approach, if you are a straight up, no frills metal fan you would be on board with Land of Demise from note one.The album can be listened to in one single sitting, and Black Soul Horde made a perfect decision for all songs to be around 4 min length not to overstay or drag. This is like Hors D'oeuvres, to be eaten in one quick bite. Makes for a bit of difficulty then to pick killing songs, since you will like it or dismiss it in one big fell swoop, it is all pretty much in a single vein.

Album:

When Black Soul Horde first appeared in metal scene, they stand out with their renewable traditional Heavy Metal. Although their second full length release came out 7 years after the first one, this time their new effort is coming thankfully, out just one year after their previous release. It seems that during quarantine, the group had more time to compose new songs. While you listen to “Horrors from the Void”, you can easily recognize the characteristic sound of Black Soul Horde. And at the same time that this is their best work so far. All the tracks are equally exceptional. “Malediction of the Dead” shows the disposal of the group to experiment in the composition without being differentiated so much from their own sound. Guitar and riffs are in the spotlight. The classic heavy sound is combined well with epic moments and Power Metal melodies. The most impressive fact is that while they are more close to the traditional Heavy Metal sound, at the same time their sound has a dark and mysterious atmosphere. That’s what I enjoy so much in this group. Their music suits absolutely with the lyrics relevant to Lovecraft and mythology. Although in “Horrors from the Void” you will discover individual musical elements, you will appreciate more, the general sense of satisfaction in the overall hearing of the album. Good compositions, epic moments, dynamic melodies and great atmosphere are some of the things that you can discover in “Horros fron the Void”.

Album:

4 full-length album.A collection of stories about monsters, famous or otherwise.I enjoyed my last contact with Greece’s Black Soul Horde on their 2020 offering Land of Demise; Their slightly simplistic take on NWoBHM/power metal crossoverism threw up some nice tunes, even if the overall feel was a little faceless. In 2025, it seems to be pretty much business as usual for the band who now, as far as I can work out, are down to the duo (for writing and recording purpose, at least) of vocalist Jim Kotsis and guitarist/producer John Tsiakopoulos.I criticised Kotsis last time around for a slight lack of ambition vocally, and I have to say he does attack the task at hand with real vigour here, throwing in a few King Diamond screams to good effect as required, which is a big step up from his Ozzyesque contributions of the past; Tsiakopoulos remains an impressive guitarist with a good ear for arrangements – there’s an air of class about tracks like Dance of the Eternal Shadows, which closes out the album impressively, that just wasn’t present before. The best material here – the rousing The Creatures of the Night and Julian Graves, which sadly turns out not to be about a boy I went to school with of the same name – is very good indeed, and certainly among the best metal I’ve heard emanating from Greece this year. Our heroes have really found their niche with this kind of classy, exciting heavy metal, and the task now remains for them to sharpen that steel more consistently. For every Julian Graves there’s a What The Night Invokes which doesn’t quite carry the same musical heft, despite some truly impressive bass playing (from Tsiakopoulos again, I think, as no bass player is credited). Tat means half the album remains a little disposable, or at least not quite as enticing a listening prospect.Still, it would be a shame to miss out on the good stuff due to the odd bit o’fluff, so why not have a listen for yourselves? You might be pleasantly surprised!
