Bio:

Metalian is a classic heavy metal band based out of Montreal, Canada. With sounds reminiscent of classic 80’s metal, and reviews touting them as “The Canadian Judas Priest,” it’s obvious that Metalian have made their name known in the realm of metal music in North America.Their sounds include triumphant dueling guitars, thundering drums, pounding bass, and true falsetto vocals, they show that old school metal is still alive, and very strong.Metalian has toured throughout Canada and the United States, from Toronto to New York City, to Cleveland, Ohio. Metalian has not only toured the best places in North America, but has also shared the stage with some of the best bands in the country; Anvil and Thor. The band proves that it has reached all different types of media, with their song ‘Nercronomican’ to be featured in the sequel to the iconic Canadian film, “Fubar.”

Album:

Montreal's Metalian has finally released its latest full-length release, Midnight Rider, after eight long years of anticipation. Upon first listen I'm thoroughly impressed with the result as it matches the intensity and verve of 2009's Wasteland and the quartet's classic EP, Rock Solid from 2011 while its raw yet burly tone trumps that of the Quebecois quartet's Metal Fire & Ice EP by a long shot.Blistering and at times symphonic solos aside, the intricately woven song structures this time around raise Midnight Rider to the same level of ecstatic Priest meets Jaguar meets Raven glory as the highly energetic Wasteland LP, on which tracks such as "Heat Ray", "Edge of the Knife" and "Wasteland" do utmost justice to the aforementioned pioneers of the much lauded NWOBHM, back when sheer explosiveness intertwined with deft composition skills were the norm prior to the advent of the "big four" and their more or less hedonistic, savage riff mongering which unfortunately came at the cost of melody and classical depth. In other words, as brawny as it is, Metalian strives for more than simple mosh pit causation and head banger-y. Front man/ guitarist Ian and fellow axe man Simon, along with drummer Tony and bassist Andres, have reached their pinnacle in a strictly musical sense, proving there's nothing wrong with emulating the masters of days of fore so long as it's done right. In the case of tracks like "Inside The Dome", "Breakout" and especially "Burn It Down", a massive Priest influence is heard, yes, but more than that, Metalian's heartfelt and convincing disposition allows a younger generation of metal heads to live the metal dream without fear of accusations of bland mimicry - the end result here is an enthusiastic and invigorating blueprint they can relate to without fear of being labeled or pigeonholed as Johnny-come-lately's to the scene who only strive to serve up rehashed or worse, watered down versions of bygone heavy metal excellence. With this out of the way, I'll extoll Midnight Rider's virtues following the ubiquitous "Intro" instrumental, which to its credit surpasses the banality of Metal Fire & Ice's opener, the slightly longer "Intromental". "Midnight Rider", the title track proper, harkens back to the days of "Conquest" and "Alone Again" from both 2005's Rock & Roll Anthems and 2011's Rock Solid EP, in part due to its outright epic flavour and marching brigade undertone. Decidedly Savatage-esque riff wise, "Inside The Dome" features Ian in true Halford mode with Andres' bass finally surfacing from beneath the treble charge of both vocals and guitars, in the process making this likely nod to the thousand page Stephen King tome a definite highlight. This is followed by "Breakout", a schizophrenic sounding dirge of rapid fire riffing and sustained backing chords. This track also brings to mind the uproarious "Shredded Beef" off of Wasteland thanks to Ian's manic vocal projections. Not my preferred track per se but still a fun romp to shake your head from side to side to. Next is my official go-to track for this release, the rumbling bass heavy "Burn It Down" which features a simple albeit captivating end of bar, double string hammer-on/ pull-off lick highly reminiscent of the main riff to Judas Priest's "Reckless" (the one decent track from Turbo in my opinion) as well as the intro to the Kiss classic, "Black Diamond". A conservative approach to be sure but hot diggity, is it ever rocking! As well, the symbiotic harmony and lightning fast alternate picking towards the end duly reward the listener above and beyond what they'd normally expect from such a tame foundation. (I'm all the more grateful it''s Midnight Rider's longest track at 6.5 minutes.Expect more jangling face-peeler-y and a cool wonky bass solo accompanied by some super spastic finger work on "Firestorm", which also borders on thrash for the most part; a nice transcending of genres if you will. "The Haunting" is along the same lines though more condensed and shorter, falling just short of three minutes before album closer "Bastards" comes up with some razor sharp, faster than usual riffing to the backdrop of a super linear, unyielding battery, the lot peppered by a flurry of tight feral solos on behalf of Metalian's blazing guitar duo. What more could you ask for?!While the album title and cover art, despite an eye-catching turquoise hue, are laughable in their contrition, make no mistake; Metalian - along with Newfoundland's Emblem might I add - has earned its place among rock steady Canadian colleagues Cauldron, Striker and dare I say it, 3 Inches Of Blood. Now that its engine is fully revved up, feel free to clamp down on the accelerator...you're in for a helluva ride!
