Little is known about the Romanian Katharein, a group founded in 2022 by guitarist and singer Silviu S., together with the other guitarist Skozy; after several lineup changes, drummer Matthias Klaus and bassist Joey Rock (I guess a fictitious name) arrived, completing the line-up that recorded this debut album, entitled “Lucky shots”. Apart from this information, unfortunately we have not found anything else, since the band does not have a website, is not present on metal-archives.com (the Bible of metal!) and on the group’s Facebook page there is little or nothing written. But let’s get to the album, with a fairly simple artwork (it could have been better!) and consisting of 13 songs for about ¾ of an hour of total duration. The genre proposed by the Romanians is a pleasant heavy metal that harks back to the tradition of the English school, Iron Maiden above all; despite almost no originality (let's avoid going into similar discussions!), the album is very pleasant to listen to, thanks to the excellent work of the musicians, but also to the voice of the leader Silviu S. who is not exactly canonically metal, but who could remind us of something of people like (due comparisons made) David Bowie and other artists a bit far from the concept of an aggressive heavy metal singer; very intriguing, moreover, when Silviu lowers the tones, using an uncommon expressiveness. Interesting then the unfortunately rare digressions of the keyboards (whose author has not been revealed) that in some cases make the sound a bit "spacey" ("Ain't nobody", for example), lightening it somewhat and making it certainly easier and more ingratiating and, in its own way, not so obvious. Very pleasant the always sparkling rhythm (“Fried your brains” is emblematic in this sense) imposed by the drums and the solo parts of the two guitars, not particularly complex, but always pleasant, excellently supported by the bass never in the background and often protagonist. Track after track, the album flows pleasantly and is easy to listen to (even if “Adler’s alley” reminds a little too much in its attack “Rock you like an hurricane” by Scorpions), thanks to an effective and never verbose songwriting, with the various pieces that do not have excessive length and always focus on the essentials, without adding useless frills or convoluted passages that would only weigh down the listening. This “Lucky shots” is only the debut album for Katharein but, if these are the premises, we must keep an eye on this band because it could give us other excellent albums in the future! Certainly among the most interesting first works of the just passed 2024.
