Album:

The perceptive sound of “Heavy Metal” is interpreted differently person to person, generation to generation, and nowadays, sub-genre to sub-genre. And no matter the metal preference, most fans possess a passion and burning loyalty to a stylistic sound, buried deep within each one’s soul, which drives them to the point of not compromising their tastes in the least bit. For years, these uncompromising feelings have been the source of endless disagreements based on musical tempo, vocal style, lyrical content, and more often than should be, a bands appearance. We all have our opinions of what is, and what isn’t right. Every great while, a band explodes onto the scene, releasing an album with such a widely appealing sound, that it bridges the gap between everything that’s hard and heavy, leaving no doubt that what they’ve just offered is truly, “Heavy Metal”. Such is the case for one of my new favorite bands, SNAKEYES.With the release of their first full-length album, “Ultimate Sin”, there’s no denying that this band is special, and regardless of one’s preferred flavor of metal, this album will surely appeal to the mass head banging population. This 11-track masterpiece was one of my most anticipated releases of 2015 and comes on the heels of their highly successful 2013 EP, “Welcome To The Snake Pit”. Consisting of Cosmin Aionita on vocals, Jose Pineda on bass and guitar, Justi Bala on guitar, and Carlos Delgado on drums, SNAKEYES classic metal style conveys a strong comparison to, anything fronted by Rob Halford (THE “Metal God”), leaning more to the heavier FIGHT and HALFORD sound, and “Painkiller” era JUDAS PRIEST, as well as DIO and IRON MAIDEN. Aionita’s voice has freakish range, power, and fury, and he has the potential to become the new generation’s “Metal God”. The guitar riffs are classic Power Metal hostility that perfectly transition into highly contagious solos. While his bass playing is outstanding, Pineda’s presence has been paramount to the success of the band. The band originally started as his solo project, but after joining forces and writing songs with Aionita, and then adding Bala and Delgado to the fold, he has solidified SNAKEYES’ status as one of the bands to watch in 2015 and one that will be playing to plenty.Sure, there have been many bands that have played this style of music and possess the talent to go along with it, but the songwriting here is what separates this album from the others. Without a weak song on the album, this one is a “can’t miss”. I’ve listened to “Ultimate Sin” repeatedly for two weeks and I challenge all metalheads to turn it on, turn it up to “10”, and just listen. SNAKEYES is proof that Metal can still be universally Heavy. While the landscape of metal continues to evolve, it’s sometimes difficult for everyone to agree on what “Heavy Metal” should sound like. This is not something that’s heard solely superficially; it’s a connection that’s felt deep inside, and it just feels right. I can sum it up in one word: SNAKEYES.

Album:

“Evil Must Die” consists of ten new songs, produced and mixed by José Pineda, which will take you on a journey through several scenarios, both real and fictional: war, politics, religion, literature and horror – all present throughout the album. The new record is a natural evolution of the musical style developed by SnakeyeS on its previous albums: pure and solid Heavy Metal, dedicated to the genre’s true fans.SnakeyeS are a heavy metal band from Spain formed in 2013 releasing the ‘Welcome To The Snake Pit’ E.P. the same year. The bands first full length album ‘Ultimate Sin’ was released in 2015 with the bands sophomore album ‘Metal Monster’ released in 2017. SnakeyeS deliver a powerful blend of traditional heavy metal and mild touches of the power and thrash metal genres. Their third album, ‘Evil Must Die’ was released in 2020.Just like their previous album ‘Metal Monster’, the bands new album is also a metal monster, with crunching riffs and thundering rhythms. Head bangers of the world warm up your neck muscles – this is gonna be frantic! Quickly into its stride, ‘Evil Must Die’ explodes into life with the heavy hitting ‘War Machine’, a thunderour battering ram of brute force. SnakeyeS deliver more of an American flavour of power metal rather than the European style, but that doesn’t matter one iota, because the energy and oomph oozing from the bands third album is just fucking awesome. And that awesomeness carries on with the thundering mid tempo ballistic barrage of ‘The Evil Dead’. More mid paced than the albums opener, ‘The Evil Dead’ is mid tempo heavy/power metal of the most bombastic variety. The blend of power metal and the classic sound of traditional heavy metal is just astounding, with SnakeyeS portraying this blend in abundance. The pace quickens and the tempo increases with the all out gallop of ‘New World Order’. Time for some serious head banging as ‘New World Order’ rockets by furiously. The mid tempo anthemic style of heavy/power metal takes front and centre with ‘Lose Control’. Epic and glorious, ‘Lose Control’ still manages to ooze the albums overall oomph, and with the highly sing a long able chorus SnakeyeS have a crowd participative gem in their hands. ‘I Am Evil’ is a high octane rampage of full on and flat out heavy metal to stir the senses. Rocket fuelled and heavier than the heaviest thing you can think off, ‘I Am Evil’ gives a wink to ‘Am I Evil’ by pioneering British NWOBHM band Diamond Head – just check out the lyrics from 2:06, “I am evil, yes I am”. Kudos SnakeyeS, kudos. The album moves swiftly on with the highly atmospheric and moody opening to ‘Dead Don’t Ride’, quickly adopting the heavy foot stomping style of heavy metal. ‘Dead Don’t Ride’ is a melodic monster, more in keeping with the European style of power metal. The ability of SnakeyeS to switch between the American and the European styles with such ease is incredible, attracting fans from all over the world. Heavying things up, ‘The Clown And The God’ is a frenetic and quite frankly, a savage barrage of metal, bordering on the thrash metal genre. Get those heads banging sports fans, ‘The Clown And The God’ deserves it. Forever flexing their metal muscles, SnakeyeS return to the mid tempo heavy foot stomping of earlier with ‘Death Stranded’, and a clear ‘A Matter Of Life And Death’ era Iron Maiden influence across the chorus break. Cracking stuff… ‘Sign Of Our Times’ takes a heavier path, punching hard and thumping harder, as it marches tall and very proud across the land. Look out or you may get trampled, for ‘Sign Of Our Times’ strides on with no mercy. Bringing the album to a close, is the seven minute epic ‘All Gods Are Dead’. A mid tempo, highly anthemic monster, ‘All Gods Are Dead’ is a sinister and menacing foot stomp that’ll shake the ground it walks on, crumbling walls and shaking buildings. ‘All Gods Are Dead’ is a thunderous end to a thundering album.Overall, a thunderous mix of both the American and European styles of power metal all tied up in the classic sound of traditional heavy metal, ‘Evil Must Die’ is glorious.
