Bio:

Bombus are a hard / heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Bombus initially signed to Mourningwood Recordings, releasing 3 singles and their debut album "Bombus" before signing to Century Media on 10 April 2013;releasing another single "Apparatus", on 6 May 2013, and their second studio album "The Poet and The Parrot" on 26 September 2013.

Album:

I should probably hate this album. I’ve been having some difficulty trying to explain why I like Bombus‘s sophomore Century Media release, Repeat until Death, but as Jordan Campbell would tell me: that’s my job. But it’s possibly easier to let me explain, first, why I shouldn’t like it. Because, trust me, I’m as confused as anyone about this whole thing and I need to get my thoughts straight. What I frequently enjoy about metal is about melody, complexity, and what often times I call “progressiveness.” This may be a misnomer, as it’s not really the progressive I’m interested in, as the complex and musically interesting. Music that grows, is epic, and expansive is the metal that appeals to me most. The bands should be well-known to readers: Orphaned Land; Opeth; Barren Earth; Soen. Minor keys? Expansive vision? Long, emotional songs? Check, check, check. These bands aren’t bands whose songs I would ever describe as slick. They tend toward beautiful, fragile cleans, and while they might have some riffs, they aren’t exactly riffy.Bombus‘ Repeat until Death is built almost entirely on riffs and minimalism. While a DR6 master is way too dense for me to argue that the band is producing something with a lot of “white space,” it’s music that implies white space. There’s a good separation between the instruments; with the bass playing a heavy role in the mix. If this thing were mixed in 1986, it would have had punchy drums and thinner guitars, but since it’s 2016, the guitars are a lot more late Corrosion of Conformity than Dire Straits. Still, tracks like “Get Your Cuts” and “Head of Flies” show off the ease with which Bombus uses white space and open sounds in order to build their sound. The number of places where just two voices—in this context meaning drums and vocals, or just bass and drums—carry a song are surprisingly plentiful.Don’t confuse me calling the record riffy with meaning that the songs lack coherence. In fact, Repeat until Death is an album that is hard to describe in any way but “slick.” The songwriting here is tight, poppy, and catchy. If I were cheeky, I’d say that Bombus is indie pop with the volume turned up; if The Sounds had been metal, they would’ve sounded like this (or this). This is not a slight, but an acknowledgement that these guys are driving this bus with hooks, not metal credentials. From the very introductory track, the songs are hooky and fun. The Swenglish “Eyes on the Price” (z grabbar, z) starts out a verse driven by voice and simplistic guitars, but the chorus bursts with energy and has a razor-sharp hook. “Deadweight” features Grand Magus riffing and a heavy metal attitude with an absolutely fat lead and instantly memorable chorus. Mid-paced rocker “Shake Them for What They’re Worth” might be my favorite track on the album, with a chorus speaking to my cynicism (“You shake the revolution, shake them for what they’re worth,”) and a melancholy melodic structure that hits home.Ironically, Bombus might appeal to me not just because their slick songs are well-written, short, and immediate. It might be because that despite an outward minimalism, Repeat until Death is more interesting on deeper listens than you’d expect. While the songs are simple, the band actually has a tendency toward sad melodies and counterintuitive riffing. “You the Man” features a weird chorus, and a borderline “progressive” bridge—when is a countermelody not really a ‘melody’? “I Call You Over (Hairy Teeth, Pt)” features a stadium rock chorus, but a more reflective introduction, while “Rust” has an outro melody that’s about 80% from “The Unforgiven” (y’know, Metallica…), but is delivered with walking bass underneath and a sing-along sound; both catchy and powerful. With all of this, the singer—who honestly, I have no idea if this is Feffe or Matte who sings in this band due to a dearth of accompanying information—should be the final straw. I can’t say I’ve ever enjoyed a band with a guy who sounds like this; it’s kind of a scratchy post-thrash hard rock vocalist. Half scream, 1/4 growl, and 1/4 melody, “Feffmatte” has a lot more control over his vocals than your average screamy guy, which allows him to carry melodies. But rather than finding it to be irritating—like the newest In Flames material—Mattfeffe balances intensity and melody perfectly. The combination of riff-driven writing with occasional quirks, and a bit of an “unhinged” vocal sound keeps the music interesting. And while the production tried as hard as it could to beat it out of them, I’ll bet these guys sound immense live. All of this all has left me coming back to this album time and again for nearly two months now. I popped the promo in because I was curious and these weeks later, I’m still spinning Repeat until Death with a stunning regularity. Sure, they probably sound like some band I don’t listen to or something, but I’m OK with that. Bombus hits a perfect balance between slick, minimal, moody, and groovy, and was a pleasant surprise.

Album:

On November 15th the Swedish crew will release their most vital album to date, “Vulture Culture” through Century Media Records! As civilisation crumbles, everyone needs to find a good party at the end of the world. Loud, proud, bombastic and belligerent, Swedish metal crew Bombus have been raging against the dying of mankind’s light for the last decade, a consistent and reliable force for massive riffs and even bigger choruses, wielding enough fire and fury to power a fleet of Death Stars. The album was recorded with producer Daniel Johansson and mixed and mastered by revered studio guru Jens Bogren (Opeth/Katatonia/Dimmu Borgir).Fredrik “Feffe” Berglund about the album: “I think there is really no other band that sounds like us. But still we sound like a hundred other bands! If you listen to Vulture Culture you can spot the obvious connection to Black Sabbath and Motörhead but if you listen again you’ll hear traces of Queen, The Prodigy, Tragedy, Pink Floyd, The Partisans, Pantera, ABBA… and it all fits in there! We have never fitted into any particular genre or box and maybe that has made us fall between chairs at times, but if you ask me, that’s what makes us special.”In truth, it’s not /only/ rock’n’roll… in fact, Vulture Culture provides clear evidence that Bombus are exactly the band the world needs right now. Uplifting anthems, delivered with maximum passion and rendered in ear-blitzing multi-dimensional splendour, with endless giant riffs, incisive melodies and dynamic moments of darkness and light… all human life is here, and it’s heavy as Hell and utterly irresistible. If the end of the world is coming, Bombus are going down in a blaze of rock’n’roll glory.

Bombus - Your Blood (2024)

Album:

Gothenburg’s Bombus returns with their new album, Your Blood, marking the dawn of a fresh musical chapter. With this album, Bombus ventures down a somewhat different path, yet fans need not worry; the essence of Bombus remains intact. After a much-needed vacation,1 and being sick as fuck for weeks, ole Grier is back with something you might not want in your life but you need it. In 2016, AMG Himself reviewed the third record from Bombus, a little-known Swedish outfit. Like AMG, I was surprised that something so simple could plant a seed in my ear and keep me returning for more. But, I suppose it’s no surprise when surrounded by endless extreme metal that a palate cleanser like Repeat Until Death would find a home in my regular rotation. The band basically plays metalized rock with predictable song structures and hooking choruses, where nothing overstays its welcome. Three years later, we appeared to have missed the release of Vulture Culture. But maybe that was for the best considering it only contained a handful of new ideas and struggled to come together as a complete album. I was hesitant when I saw this year’s Your Blood in the bin. Though one spin in, I knew something magical was happening to Bombus and Your Blood turned out to be their most ambitious record to date. After spending years with Century Media Records, Bombus has penned a new deal with Black Lodge Records. Not only that but co-founding vocalist and guitarist Matte Säker left the band. In his stead, not only was another vocalist/guitarist recruited (they have two), but a third guitarist was added to the mix to bring the band from a four-piece to a five-piece. With these newfound axes, the band traveled a new road that brought soaring solos, intricate leads, and harmonizing soundscapes. Your Blood also offers the most melodic collection of pieces the band has ever accumulated. The result is far less predictable than previous albums, introducing new twists that’ll pull at your heartstrings, bob your head, and raise an eyebrow (or two). If you know the band’s previous output, nothing will prepare you for what’s to come. While one of the more straightforward ditties on the record, “Killer” does a decent job introducing you to the new Bombus direction. After opening with all three guitars lending their strings to soaring leads, the song settles into a melodic groove. As the song builds, the passion and sadness of the track intensifies, sucking you into its mere three-and-a-half-minute runtime. With an accessible piece setting the mood, things get real weird, real fast. The follow-up track, “The One,” zaps you into a time warp that introduces a slow-moving vocal style akin to Nick Cave and a poppy drum beat that could have come from The White Stripes. I know, it’s a couple of odd descriptors, but the song is absolutely hypnotizing as it weaves in and out of intense moments and drum-led spoken-word interludes. But, the weirdest track of them all is the title track. Like so many other bands these days, Bombus reaches into Spaghetti-Western influences. With cawing crows and more sinister Ghoultown vibes, this track slithers around like a sidewinder, erupting into the catchy chorus while passing through cold, dark desert nights.Between these oddities, Hellhammer-esque nastiness, Motörhead beauty, speed metal licks, Pain-like psychedelics, and Volbeaty clapping segments,2 a couple tracks truly crawl to the top. “Carmina” is one of the most interesting tracks on the album, showing how much time the band spent to improve and diversify their sound. Probably one of the heavier tracks on the album, much like their style of old, this track uses a combination of hammering vocals, bass, and drums to set up the chorus. The chorus is interesting because it passes through two phases: first, punching Rob Zombie-ish shouts, and then low, overlapping vocals. After passing the midway point, the band settles into Chug Land, pounding away on a riff as the guitar leads swirl around the background chants. The best song on the album immediately triggered me in the strangest way possible. The simple riff of “Take Your Down” is almost identical to the soundtrack of one of my favorite revenge scenes in television history: when Frank Castle finally gets his hands on William Rawlins. It’s a powerful song with a fantastic chorus that punches on those revenge qualities and puts goosebumps on my arms.
