Bio:

Blitzkrieg are a heavy metal band initially from Leicester formed in 1980. The current line-up is Brian Ross (vocals), Ken Johnson (guitar), Alan Ross (guitar), Bill Baxter (bass) and Matt Graham (drums). Brian Ross is the only remaining member from the band's founding.Blitzkrieg was formed in October 1980 after signing a record deal with Neat Records, a label that was signing many of the bands involved with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. In the early stages of Blitzkrieg's career they regularly produced gigs in England, but then later split in 1981. Brian Ross most notably went on to join Satan, another metal band, along with stints in Avenger, Lone Wolf and Unter den Linden. In 1984 Ross and fellow founding member Jim Sirotto, along with guitarist Mick Proctor (ex-Tygers of Pan Tang), bass player Mick Moore (of Avenger) and drummer Sean Taylor (Satan/Blind Fury, ex-Raven) then decided that it was time to record the Blitzkrieg album that was originally planned to be released in 1981, A Time of Changes. It was later released in 1985.Blitzkrieg released 10 Years of Blitzkrieg in 1991. The released Unholy Trinity in 1995. The album Ten was released in 1997. The Mists of Avalon was released in 1998.Ross was then involved in a car accident, which temporarily kept Blitzkrieg from playing. After he recovered, the band released the albums, Absolute Power (a studio album), Absolutely Live (a live album) and Sins and Greed. On 10 August 2007, Blitzkrieg released their album Theatre of the Damned through their record label Armageddon Music.

Album:

2015 sees the 35th anniversary of the band Blitzkrieg who came into existence in 1980. Although their debut single (on Neat records) was released in 1981 , “Buried Alive” b/w “Blitzkrieg”, it was not till 1985 that the band recorded their debut album as vocalist Brian Ross was involved with his other band, Satan, recording and touring their debut classic Court In The Act…30 years on because of catalogue sale and resale A Time Of Changes is lost in the vaults of corporate hell and may never see the light of day again. That said the current lineup of Blitzkrieg wanted this album available to fans so they have completely re-recorded the album and added two bonus tracks. “Too Wild To Tame”, which should have made the LP back in 1980 but for time restrictions of vinyl then would not fit, was eventually recorded by another Neat records stablemate, Avenger. The second bonus track has never been released before though written at the time. “Jealous Love” was the last song penned by the Ross/Sirroto partnership which fueled the early version of the band. All the classic tracks are here too on this album including many still played live today, which includes the Metallica covered “Blitzkrieg” track. It also features guess twin guitar appearances on “Pull The Trigger” by Satan's Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsay.Great new artwork has been commissioned for the new version by South American artist Ivan Chacon fronting a new 12-page booklet full of sleeve notes by Brian Ross, lyrics and new photos from the past and present lineup. The album will be released in Europe by the band's long time label, Metal Nation Records. It will also be released in Japan by Spiritual Beast and various labels in South America to coincide with the band's 15-date four-country tour in November 2015. There will also be a vinyl version of the album by German based label High Roller Records.

Album:

Blitzkrieg is one of the stepping stones of heavy metal, for those who are interested in more than the Big 4, or the famous names. Considering that Metallica covered them three decades ago (almost), it tells you something about their influence. Although I am more of a fan of Satan, the other endeavor of some of the Blitzkrieg people, it is always nice to hear something new.Introductions aside, the Leicester band comes with their new (ninth) album, Judge Not, and I am not sure how to handle this. On one hand, I have the respect to the band’s history and their contribution to the genre. On the other hand, this is arguably one of the worst releases I have heard over the decades of my metal enthusiasm. Brian Ross has an engaging voice, one that needs to be used in precision to get that perfect output. Candlemass and Messiah is an excellent example in that sense. Messiah’s voice is not for everyone, but it worked perfectly with Candlemass. The problem is not about the singing style or the performance (we are talking about a very well established band, after all); it is about the lines and melodies. They feel forced; they feel rushed and hastily put together as if to meet a deadline. As a principle, I try and listen to an album I am asked to review at least five times, and this time, it was hard to keep that self-set standard. On every track, I saw missed opportunities, wrong (from my perspective of course) choices, bland applications. The way the album starts, you get excited when the drumming hits your headphones with all the snare-kick combos, and then it lets you down. The recording quality is rock-solid, and Jacob Hansen handled the mixing. I am a fan of his works, especially with Evergrey, and he does not surprise me with yet another excellent example of craftsmanship. However, mixing itself is not enough to salvage an album. The first single, “Reign of Fire” is arguably the highest point of the album. Guitar works, chord sequences, the flow of songs, they all miss the enthusiastic touch. Blitzkrieg always had a different, an original sound of sorts, but not every idea works, apparently. If you are into Saxon, Candlemass and heavy metal acts in similar vain coming from the golden age of NWOBHM, it is a must to dig this band. That said, I suggest you start with Buried Alive or A Time of Changes.

Album:

Old Metalheads remember that NWOBHM wasn’t a way of playing Metal, but a movement that unleashed a musical assault throughout, bringing Metal back from underground, and its echoes were so strong that created many musical scenarios on countries where Metal wasn’t known. But commercially speaking, NWOBHM brooded only two giants, a few great names, and a vast number of underground names. And speaking honestly, there were names that deserve to be giants due their remarkable works. The legendary quintet BLITZKRIEG is one of them, and if you don’t know their work, the EP “Loud and Proud” is a good release for that.Their musical work is based on the trademark sound of NWOBHM: fine melodies that come from 70’s Hard Rock with the weight and aggressiveness of traditional Heavy Metal. But on the hands of Brian and his comrades, these elements sound fresh, new and personal. The sound quality is what could be expected from a legend of NWOBHM that honors its past, but lives in the present: a strong, heavy and powerful sonority that allows the listeners to understand what is being played, but with instrumental tunes that seems handcrafted, because the band isn’t looking for something modern of its music. The material of this EP is, in its greater part, different versions for songs that are presented on “Judge Not!”, but how good is to hear such energetic and melodic work. “Loud and Proud” is the same song presented on “Judge Not!”, heavy and filled with energy coming from its tempos (what means a solid work done by bass guitar and drums). “Without You (alternate version)” is a bit different from the version presented on the album, because the accessible melodies of it are led by Brian’s voice (and not from Alan, as it was previously). “Falling Into Darkness (orchestrated version)” is heavy and has a slow insight, filled with excellent guitars, but being remixed and shows some orchestral arrangements. On “Together (We Are Strong)”, another song with an accessible feeling, differs from the version presented on “Theatre of the Damned”, because it was recorded in a similar way of the original version of the demo. As anyone can see, “After Dark” is an old song that comes from “Unholy Trinity” (the band’s second album), who was re-recorded as a bonus track for “Judge Not!”, and its aggressiveness and weight didn’t change in comparison with its original form (and the vocals are great). And “School’s Out” is a version of the quintet for the old classic of ALICE COOPER, being a bit more heavier and uses some different elements (as double bass drumming), and tons of melodic weight.Maybe “Loud and Proud” would not be attractive for beginners that think that NWOBHM is only done by its greater names, but it’s a great release for those that know that BLITZKRIEG’s fire power is still deadly!

Album:

For fans of Satan, Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Iron Maiden Unrepentantly flying the flag for Classic British Metal since the release of their 1981 “Blitzkrieg/Buried Alive” demo, BLITZKRIEG were a pivotal influence on countless heavy metal bands for decades to come: most notably, Metallica, who released a cover of the band’s eponymous track “Blitzkrieg” both on the “Garage Inc” compilation album, and as a B-side on their 1984 single “Creeping Death”.Formed in Leicester in late 1980 by lead vocalist Brian Ross (who remains at the helm of the band to this day), the band would take a four-year hiatus when Ross left to join NWOBHM legends Satan, recording their classic album “Court In The Act” (Roadrunner) and touring extensively, before reuniting with bassist Mick Moore to form Avenger.1985 saw the release of Blitzkrieg’s long-awaited debut album “A Time Of Changes” on legendary British label Neat Records, which remains a cult classic to this day. Further success would follow with 1991’s “Ten Years Of Blitzkrieg” (Roadrunner) and a three-album deal in 1995 with Neat Records. The band continued to champion Classic Metal throughout the turbulent 2000s, with albums like 2002’s “Absolute Power” (Hellion) and 2007’s “Theatre Of The Damned” (Armageddon), the latter of which was co-produced by Saxon frontman Biff Byford after Blitzkrieg opened for Saxon on their UK tour the year prior. All the while, the band remained a mainstay on the international festival circuit, with appearances at Wacken, Headbangers Open Air, Keep It True, Hard Rock Hell and countless others, along with regular tours in four continents.Returning from a hiatus in the wake of their critically acclaimed releases “Back From Hell” and “Judge Not”, Blitzkrieg are as vital, powerful and ferocious as the day they were founded over 40 years ago. Long time members Alan Ross (son of Brian Ross) and powerhouse drummer Matt Graham are joined by bassist Liam Ferguson and virtuoso guitarist and producer Nick Jennison. Their new album “Blitzkrieg” is set for release in summer 2024 via Mighty Music, and if early previews are to be believed, is their best work since 1985.“Blitzkrieg” will be released on CD, LP (black, green and red vinyl versions available, each limited to 200 copies) and digital on September 6th, 2024 via Mighty Music.
