Century - The Conquest Of Time (2023)

Year : 2023
Style : Heavy Metal
Country : Sweden
Audio : 320 kbps + front
Size : 85 mb
Bio:
Heavy metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. Debut full length album "The Conquest of Time" available on Electric Assault Records on the 21st of April 2023.With their previous singles and demos, the Swedish duo Century have already been able to stir up a bit of dust in the treumetal underground. Some people even sensed a future sensation here. That may be quite exaggerated. But Century know their craft and transport the sound of 40 years ago into the modern age as authentically as only a few. And they can write songs, too.
Album:
There are very few things in this world that make me as happy as heavy metal records from Sweden. Whether it be from Mindless Sinner, Heavy Load, 220 Volt, or Gotham City - that place was, and still is, a hotbed for incredible metal records. With a new age of metal bands and an urge to return to a more old-school sound, comes Century hailing from Stockholm. This album opens with one of the greatest NWOTHM openers ever, The Fighting Eagle, packed with trad riffs galore and some great harmony breaks before an absolutely searing lead guitar solo. The tracks that follow hold up as well, with vocal harmonies that'll stick in your head for days, memorable riffs, great leads, and some solid, solid rhythm work.Vocally, I see much similarity to Ragne Wahlquist (of Heavy Load fame) when it comes to how Staffan Tengnér sings. He's got that laid back Swedish approach to his voice, but just like the former, can really utilize it when he wants to make a song more impactful; things such as a rushed vibrato or going lower during higher parts of a song. These little nuances shine brightest in tracks like Sinister Star or Distant Mirror when Staffan starts a vocal harmony and then drops it out of nowhere. Absolutely fantastic execution and it's something I wish more modern trad vocalists weren't afraid to experiment with. The album closes with the epic Servants of the Iron Mask, a track that definitely took some inspiration from Heavy Load songs like Daybreak Ecstasy or Stronger Than Evil. While utilizing the same riffs in sequence, the repetition never gets boring as vocal melodies and flares of color are sprinkled atop rhythm changes and alternate phrasing, furthering the impact of what's intentionally a longer closing track. To stamp that final "hoorah!" down even more, Staffan uses some Ritchie Blackmore-style guitar playing to create some cool, medieval-sounding melodies and licks (which, for my money, is always welcome in a final track on an album.) The fact that this entire album was created by just two guys from Stockholm (Staffan Tengnér & Leo Ekström Sollenmo) is absolutely astonishing to me. The performances are tight and elevate each track higher due to their superb compositions. I've enjoyed a lot of new releases this year, but I haven't been blown away by one until now. Truly, this is an amazing record and I cannot say enough good things about it. If you're a fan of 80s Swedish metal, please, please, do yourself a favor and give this Heavy Load worship a spin!
