Bio:

Heavy metal bend from Slovenia formed in 2014.Vocalist Anže Čuk started his musical career in the band Cyclöne together with Šujot, and then took up the position of frontman in the popular Postojna band Outsiders, with which he made a huge performances, mainly in Primorska, they were also a warm-up band for many of the greats of the Yugo rock. He then moved to Retro Kult, with whom he recorded his studio debut Salvation Analogum, and after a few years he left the band to pursue a solo project for a while and mainly collaborating with various musicians on various projects.Bass-man Šujo is an old friend of the Slovenian metal scene.Radio and club Dj has been on the scene since 2006, when he performed with Cyclöne.After the band broke up in 2009, he founded Tomcat, which was active between 2009 and 2021, during which time it released two studio albums and played numerous concerts at home and abroad.

Album:

Second full-length album after album "First Aid" from 2016.The follow-up to First Aid, released six years ago, sees the return of Hangar 55 in a completely renewed line-up. The new Asylum release presents a slightly different sound to that found on First Aid. The biggest and immediately noticeable difference is the vocals. France Stritar and his wild and aggressive vocals have been replaced by the cleaner and calmer vocals of Anže Čuk.The vocal contrast between the two albums is very obvious, and Hangar 55 are a slightly different band for that reason alone. Slightly less obvious is the slightly higher degree of melodicism compared to the debut, which is not immediately noticeable, as the renewed melodica fits the new vocals remarkably well (or is it the other way around?). In addition, most of the more aggressive songs are placed in the first part of the album. The focus has thus shifted slightly from "heavy" to more melodic waters, but not in a revolutionary way, but more in the sense of the evolution of the band. It can't be argued that melodic riffs weren't already present, as evidenced for example by the song Gasoline, but the change in vocals has contributed significantly to bringing the melodics more to the forefront. So we're still talking about heavy metal, but this time there are less old school moves in favour of more modern ones. In fact, the songs are much more singing and less aggressive, the guitars use the thirds a bit more, and the rhythm section is on average not as "heavy" as on First Aid. The renewed melodicism can be noticed especially in the songs My Life is Taken, Final Regret and Time. The aggression is still present, but with a different timbre. This comes mostly from the instrumental part of the songs, especially from the percussive and melodic guitar riffs, as in the songs Asylum or Wings in Pilots, while the rhythm comes to the fore most in the "heavier" Follow the Madness. It's almost expected that every heavy metal track has a ballad, so this is also present on Asylum. Love Remains is the penultimate song and one of the longest on the album. It is only surpassed by the longest Final Regret and Time, which closes the album. The latter two songs should be highlighted, as they represent the long-described and renewed melody very well. To make it easier and more evocative to imagine what kind of melody we are talking about, let me mention that Final Regret and Time have a slight, really slight Hammerfall flavour. Love Remains, Final Regret and Time are therefore the three longest songs, over six minutes long, and together they make up almost half of the whole play. It is the average length of the songs that is the last noticeable difference compared to the first album, as the songs on Asylum are generally a bit shorter.Whether this was a case of adapting the instruments to different vocals or adapting the vocals to a more singing instrumental part is unclear, but it works. You can check it out for yourself, as the band posted the full album on YouTube yesterday. The singing and the instruments create a real synergy, as Čuk's vocals fit the songs extremely well, but the reverse is also true. Considering that this is the biggest difference with the previous release, it will be very interesting to see how such, less rough vocals turn out on the songs, where the capable Franci Stritar knows how to bring out a crazy dose of energy. The reverse test would also be interesting, i.e. with Stritar on the tracks from the new Asylum release, but the question is whether this is a realistic possibility. The fact is that these are two great Hangar 55 releases, although very different in soul, still with the common denominator of heavy metal. With the combination of the two releases, Hangar 55 are living proof (in answer to those who claim the opposite) that there is a lot of diversity in this genre as well. The shape of the songs changes, the colour of the sound changes, but heavy metal is still alive and continues to evolve alongside the multitude of sub-genres that have emerged since.
