Bio:

NIGHTWÖLFF formed in 2019 from the remnants of 80s metal tribute band "Snow Dragon" and began writing riffs in the traditional metal style to continue expressing their musical needs. Two members (Ryan Scott and Graham Bellerby) were in their mid-twenties and loved everything metal, including the greatest metal era of all time, the eighties. The other two band members (Edward Weir and Jeff (JD) Scott) had been members of various metal bands in the eighties and longed to relive those glory days. The whole thing first culminated in a first EP ("The Whiskey Sessions", 2021), before now the first full-length "Riding The Night" is launched.

Album:

First full-length "Riding The Night" album."Hell Train" opens with fat double leads and drives the song forward, the creaky voice of frontman JD hovers over everything and finally leads into a well-timed, gripping chorus, as you know it from American bands from that glorious time. You can hear the band's enthusiasm and joy of playing in every second of the following title track, but the hooks here are not as pronounced as on its predecessor. The snappy "Chasing Stars" comes with a certain sleaze note in the best Scandinavian tradition, while "LHF (Long Hard Fall)" oscillates back and forth between sustained, groovy moments and faster passages, thus maintaining the tension level."Still Waters" calms things down noticeably at first, especially since singer JD has a break for the first one and a half minutes, otherwise more upbeat parts alternate with ballad-like phases. "On The Hunt" leaves an impression from the first note, because it doesn't happen very often that a song is introduced with lyrical excerpts from an old horror B-movie. The track also has enough drive and a catchy hookline to be one of the highlights of the disc. After "Still Waters" already embodied something like a (semi-) ballad, fans of cuddly rock should get their money's worth with "Lonesome Road". The soulful number with a slight country touch could well have been on a Poison or Mötley Crüe record from their prime time.Despite the lack of vocals, the snappy instrumental "Run With The Pack" is especially convincing because the string wizards don't engage in frickel onanism here, but instead display a cultivated relationship of cracking riffs and captivating guitar motifs. The remastered demo "Night Wolf" takes over the dynamics of the predecessor and starts with a long drawn out wolf howl. The number is damn tight and catchy and could easily pass as a forgotten demo by Cinderella or Mötley Crüe. I don't understand why the guys didn't re-record the whole thing, but the song is still strong.I wouldn't go so far as to put NIGHTWÖLFF on the same level as the aforementioned legends of hard rock/metal, but thanks to a homogeneous album with some outstanding tracks, one can probably speak of an appropriate legacy that still has room for improvement. Nostalgia-afflicted fans should find well-digested new fodder here.
