Bio:

English metal band Desolation Angels were founded in 1981 by vocalist Dave Wall, guitarists Robin Brancher and Keith Sharp, and bassist Joe Larner. Drummer Brett Robertson eventually completed the lineup that recorded 1983's self-financed "Valhalla" single. By this time, the group had nevertheless established itself as a solid club draw throughout London's East End, often playing alongside other arrivals to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal such as Chariot and Elixir. They'd also gained the support of independent Bullet Records, but the label unfortunately went bankrupt in early 1985, on the eve of releasing the band's eponymous debut. This would eventually see the light of day a year later (through another independent label, Thameside), by which time the drum stool had been handed over to Adam Palfrey. Desolation Angels managed to forge ahead through a few more years before finally calling it quits in 1994. The release of the Feels Like Thunder box set in 2008 prompted original guitarists Robin Brancher and Keith Sharp to start up the old machinery, and by 2012 the band was playing live again. In 2014 Desolation Angels released a new EP, The Sweeter the Meat, and in 2016 they celebrated their 30th anniversary with a reissue of their eponymous debut album.

Album:

Probably the name Desolation Angels may not mean anything to you, unless you’re a fan of the famous pioneer of the Beat Generation Kerouac or a guy that collects vinyl records from supergroups of the 70’s or a true (or trve) N.W.O.B.H.M. aficionado. Desolation Angels are generally regarded as one of the bands that delivered top notch (and mostly melodic) New Wave Of British Heavy Metal at its finest, despite the fact that they released only one studio album in the 80’s (s/t in 1986) and only one in the 90’s (‘While the Flame Still Burns’ in 1990) before they split up in 1994. Their heavy melodic twin guitar based rock was remarkable and especially their debut is still mentioned after 30+ years among the greatest moments of the second wave the genre. Having reformed in 2012, three years later in 2015, they released an EP of 5 brand new songs entitled “Sweeter The Meat” sounding fresh and motivated. Now their return is completed, with a full-length studio, 27 years after their last effort. Band’s current line-up, features a new vocalist, Paul Taylor (ex Elixir, Midnight Messiah), who replaced Curly Davies. The line-up is completed by 2 original members Robin Brancher and Keith Sharp on guitars and by Clive Pearson on bass and Chris Takka on drums. ‘King’ is one of these albums that includes straight forward compositions which do not lack of aggression or melody. Of course, the band performance and production are flawless. Thumbs up for the famous producer Chris Tsangarides, who did an amazing job here, as every instrument is easy audible and gets the opportunity to shine. Fortunately, the sound is not completely modernized – the guitars are thankfully not down tuned, making the sound so warm and analogic to my ears. The opener ‘Doomsday’ is a fast rocker with up tempo rhythm born-to-be-a-single anthemic song. ‘Another Turn Of The Screw’ is a somewhat dark and has that eerie, ominous riff, an excellent solo and it’s such a great song indeed. Third track ‘Devil Sent’ is a solid power ballad that has brilliant guitars at its climax. ‘Rotten To The Core’ despite its mid-tempo and raw sound, has an eastern scale oriented riff that gives variety on the album. ‘Your Blackened Heart’ is a crushingly heavy song combined with great lyrics. Probably among the best tracks on ‘King’ where the vocals are especially awesome, both in the verse and chorus. ‘Find Your Life’ that follows, is wisely softer and slower and rather emotional creating another nice ballad. ‘Hellfire’ once again tries to make you raise your fists in the air. Nice typical N.W.O.B.H.M. anthemic tune with impressive hooks and chorus. ‘Sky Of Pain’ is one of the highlights on this album too. It completely and totally rocks – simple ideas are at work and this song resembles old school aura. Here Taylor gives his best performance. Generally speaking, Paul Taylor ‘s vocals are excellent reminding me of Byfford’s tint. His totally sings every line carefully composed and delivered through his throat. ‘My Demon Inside’ tries to capture an epic feeling and it is a marvelous closer. To make a long story short, we are dealing with a more than you expected outstanding release that marks emphatically the return of a special and beloved band of all N.W.O.B.H.M. fanatics.

Album:

Four years ago we had the honor of reviewing 2018’s Desolation Angels “King” the comeback album after a long, but very long hiatus. Back then I was very anxious about reviewing the so long awaited album and I have to say it was kind of a deception. I was expecting the same sonancy the band had for their debut and self-tittled album “Desolation Angels” which I simply adore. I have to admit that most of the cult aura of “Desolation Angels” was its poor production from the cover to the music and, as a bonus, the poorly skilled musicians. It maybe a surprise for you my dear millenia fan but Metal music hasn’t ever had shredders filling the ranks. However, the songs were of a freshness, of a creative verve, of a wondrous taste that it was impossible not to forget all these and love the album. “King” had none of those. Thinking straight it’s funny to say that, isn’t it? Ok, now we’ve got following album “Burning Black” which keeps the flame high. Alright, it’s not “Desolation Angels” but it’s a start at least at the personality level. “Burning Black” brings back the band’s personality that is doing the music weird as they like always thinking musically out of the box. “Burning Black’s” biggest pro is going back in that and bringing some 1970s influences from Heavy Rock and even from Deep Purple. I recommend my dear fan to right to “She Walks in Starlight” which is a power ballad but not in the same terms of the famous power ballads. It’s more a slower theme with a sonancy that reminds the good old times of Desolation Angels. Hard to explain but with the good old sonancy there was something missing. Not the estructures but the outcome. Something was out of place. That was the charm. It’s like when you’re trying to play your favorite song but you can’t make it sound right no matter what. That was Desolation Angels. “She Walks in Starlight” has this feeling. Opener track “Living a Lie” isn’t that promissing. Everything is okay and sounding great and that’s the problem. But then comes “Unseen Enemy” with Desolation Angels DNA. The 1970s vocals are kind of out because the guitars are pure 1980s Metal. Little by little the album recovers the old cult aura. “Hydra” has the same opaque guitars and the old feeling. Paul Taylor’s vocals slowly acquires more and more personality mixing influences from the 1960s and the 1970s. “Mother Earth” is kind of a The Birds mixed with Iron Maiden. In the background the guitars revive the good old times. It’s the sweetness and the tenderness the catches us as well as the catchy and singalong chorus “Mother Nature is crying… Mother World is dying”.“Burning Black” brought back the old feeling, the old aura of Desolation Angels. Here the band could find the balance between the good production and the old charm because the good production almost always kills the vibe from cult bands. One thing I noticed is that there is no linear production in each track, I mean, they all have different sonancies. Maybe it’s the sign of a band that is trying a new sonancy. Or that the songs weren’t recorded at the same time with some hiatus between them.Desolation Angels “Burning Black” will be released on August 26th via Skoll Records.

Album:

Surely one of the most iconic latercomers (album-releasing-wise anyways) of the NWOBHM scene were DESOLATION ANGELS and their 1986’s self titled LP “Desolation Angels“, a classic and fairly rare cult platter hard to find for years. This is “Desolation Angels [Special 30th Anniversary Ltd Edition]” release featuring the LP remastered including a bonus disc with a previously unreleased show captured live in London, 1983.DESOLATION ANGELS is a perfect example of a band who did almost everything right – a grrreat band name, fantastic cover art, some crushing, true Heavy Metal anthems… and yeah, here comes the ‘But…’, in this case, too late for this style of metal. So the songwriting is rather diverse in both style and quality, but not to the extent that it feels too sprawling since it’s all churned out with the same raw, devil-may-care attitude. On the lower steps of the ladder you find your primordial NWOBHM-rockers like “Unsung Hero” and “Death Machine”, dating all the way back to their debut 1981 demo and just maybe those numbers could have been ceremoniously buried in a later reissue-type time-capsule release, as they must have come off a bit dated even back in 1986.On the complete opposite side of the spectrum we find the mighty, mystic metal monsters in “Evil Possessor” and “Dance Of The Demons”, the former being a traditional galopping metal banger in its most crude (good crude) form, while the latter carries a semi-doomy vibe where comparisons to both Sabbath mournful harmonies as well as Witchfinder General’s crunchy graveyard riffing can be drawn. There is however more goodness inbetween. The opening 8 minute anthem “Spirit Of The Deep” combines a pounding troglodyte lead riff with more of those classic first half of the ’80s vibe and it never feels drawn out despite its length.“Valhalla” is yet another archetype NWOBHM number but with larger Saxon-muscles than some of that earlier material, and at the end of the road the energetic riffing in “Angry Rain” rocks’n’Metals us into the ground with a force of the Grim Reaper himself riding a bat-winged horse!Desolation Angels debut LP is a rather unpolished product, for better or worse. At times the rough edges feel like they belong, but you can’t help wondering what kind of an album we could have had with a little more fine-tuning here & there. However, in its rawness resides its charm.Unfortunately, in 1986 this sound would neither have made them mainstream – nor underground darlings. Desolation Angels recorded another album 1990 then disbanded, but returned some years ago and keep playing and releasing music.“Desolation Angels” is pure traditional metal, plenty of endless riffs but highly addictive – “please sir, I want some more!”
