Bio:

Kim Bendix Petersen (born 14 June 1956, Copenhagen, Denmark),better known by his stage name King Diamond, is a Grammy Award nominated Danish heavy metal musician. As a vocalist, he is known for his extensive vocal range, in particular his usage of falsetto. He is the lead vocalist for both Mercyful Fate and the eponymous King Diamond.King Diamond's first heavy rock band was called Brainstorm (1974–76), with Jeanette Blum (Jean Blue) vocal and bass, Michael Frohn (Mike West) guitar and Jes Jacobsen (Jesse James) drums. King Diamond left Brainstorm and began singing with local Danish hard rock band Black Rose. It was during this time in Black Rose that King Diamond began experimenting with horror themed theatrics as well as shaping a malevolent quasi-Satanic stage persona. he left Black Rose and joined the punk-metal band Brats where he met Hank Shermann. Soon after, the two of them were asked to help Michael Denner (also formerly a member of Brats) with his own project Danger Zone. This band included Timi Hansen and the mentioned musicians would join with King Diamond in 1980 to become Mercyful Fate.Following Mercyful Fate's 1984 release of Don't Break the Oath and the subsequent tour (which saw them play in the U.S. for the first time), King Diamond split ways with Mercyful Fate. With him, he took two of his bandmates (Hansen and Denner) to pursue a solo career under his own name.Mercyful Fate reunited in 1992 (while King Diamond simultaneously continued his solo career) and recorded five more studio albums. In 2000, King decided to put Mercyful Fate on hold and continue on with his solo career. Though Mercyful Fate continues to remain dormant, the band is still under contract with Metal Blade Records. Also in 1999, King Diamond and Hank Shermann performed the song Evil with Metallica live. This performance also has King Diamond without his famous makeup. In recent interviews, King Diamond has stated that Mercyful Fate will record and tour again when the timing is right, saying "It's definitely not finished. In 2001, King Diamond worked out a deal with the band Usurper to sing backup vocals on the song "Necronemesis" in exchange for them shifting their recording schedule around to accommodate the recording of Abigail II: The Revenge. In 2004, King Diamond contributed vocals to "Sweet Dreams", which was the final track on the album of Dave Grohl's heavy metal side project Probot. In late 2005, King Diamond appeared on the Roadrunner United - The All-Star Sessions album, contributing vocals for his song "In the Fire", which featured multiple Roadrunner Records musicians (past and present) working together to create individual songs. King Diamond also guested on the Cradle of Filth song "Devil Woman" in late 2005.

Album:

Voodoo is the eighth studio album by Danish heavy metal band King Diamond, released in 1998. It is the first album to feature drummer John Luke Hébert and the last to feature guitarist Herb Simonsen and bassist Chris Estes. The album cover was drawn by Kristian Wåhlin.Voodoo was remastered by Andy LaRocque and re-released in 2009.Voodoo takes place in the year 1932 and deals with the affairs of the Lafayettes, a family consisting of Sarah (who is pregnant), David, and Grandpa. They move to an old colonial house on the Mississippi River, just north of Baton Rouge, which also happens to have been built next to a voodoo graveyard.Unknown to the Lafayettes, the colonial house's servant, Salem, is involved in voodoo. Salem partakes in voodoo rituals at the graveyard, along with Doctor le Croix, a voodoo sorcerer, Madame Sarita, and Lula Chevalier, a girl who is never seen. The Lafayettes hear the voodoo drums from the ceremonies in the graveyard. They call a secret meeting with Salem to discuss what should be done. The Lafayettes decide to destroy the voodoo burial ground. Salem does not want this to happen, so he sneaks out at midnight to talk to Doctor le Croix. Le Croix gives Salem money to buy some goofer dust, and tells him that the Lafayettes must all die.Salem puts a snake in David's room, mixes haunted graveyard dirt in Grandpa's food, and, after talking to the dead Baron Samedi, pours goofer dust on Sarah while she sleeps. David and Grandpa become very ill, and Sarah becomes possessed with a voodoo spirit.Grandpa manages to call Father Malone, an exorcist. Father Malone travels to the colonial house to rid Sarah of her possessor. He fails, and is rendered unconscious from exhaustion. While he is unconscious, Lula brings the heavy, nail-riddled ceremonial cross of Baron Samedi to the possessed Sarah. Sarah attacks Malone with the cross, almost killing him. Grandpa comes in and tells Sarah to stop, and she does, which saves Father Malone's life. Grandpa calls the police and ambulance, which arrive two hours later. The story concludes with Salem speaking about the aftermath of the situation, which also reveals that he escaped the events of the mansion. He explains that the Lafayettes abandoned the old colonial house after leaving the hospital. Sarah's child was born and it was speaking "in the strangest tongue...backwards. Some expert had uttered the word...'Voodoo'...

Album:

Most metal fans know the Dane Kim Bendix Petersen by a different name than his birth name, but most of us have at least heard of him. Many of us respect his work greatly and consider it a part of our induction into heavy metal, although this was of course when he was the singer in Mercyful Fate, a band which was hugely influential on not bands like Metallica, Slayer and Pantera, but also a multitude of black metal bands.King Diamond and the rest of Mercyful Fate created music, which has gone into metal history and is consistently admired by musicians and fans alike, but to be honest, I always liked his solo albums better than the Mercyful stuff. To me, it was less shrill, had a darker expression. I think ‘Abigail’ (1987), ‘Them’ (1988) and ‘Conspiracy’ (1989) by far are the best albums King has released over the years, although ‘Don’t Break the Oath’ is also a tremendous album in my humble opinion.Metal Blade Records are now reissuing King Diamond’s 1995 effort ‘The Spider’s Lullabye’, re-mastered by King’s trustful aide, Andy LaRocque, just in time for the Christmas trees out there. The release includes four demo versions from the Spider’s sessions.‘The Spider’s Lullabye’ never was one of my favourite King Diamond albums. This is not due to the album being bad. Not at all. The explanation should probably be found in the directions of my interests around 1995. Fear Factory were big for me. Type O Negative, Cathedral, Life of Agony, Carcass, Death, Deicide, Faith No More, Morbid Angel, White Zombie, Moonspell, Paradise Lost and Trouble. These bands took up most of my ear-space. I still loved the releases I mentioned above, but I didn’t seek out King Diamond the same way I’d done six or seven years before, although I did purchase the disc, collector as I was/am.Listening to the album again, you can’t deny the fact that King and LaRocque are strong composers. There is a foundational craftsmanship, which is simply in place in everything they do. Not all songs have the catchy element you’d want, and perhaps you don’t agree with King’s vocal style, but that said aside, even the lesser King Diamond albums are strong releases. So is ‘The Spider’s Lullabye’.Listen for example to album opener From the Other Side, a typical up-tempo piece with lots of energy and melodic soloing by LaRocque. And there is To the Morgue, the conclusion of the album proper. One of the heavier tunes King has made over the years, catchy and with a great flow. Also the title track of the album, with its cembalo theme (again typical for King) and almost proggy build-up, is a song you can’t really circumvent if you’re putting together a best-of collection of King Diamond tunes. The inclusion of the four demo songs is a nice little extra. Supposedly, this is King himself doing everything, LaRocque adding nothing but solos. The demo songs are of course raw, but it certainly gives you an idea how focused the man is on this ideas and just how complete they are before the band actually enters the studio. Kind of impressive, I’d say.If you’re considering beginning to listen to King Diamond, ‘The Spider’s Lullabye’ is an alright place to begin, but I’d have to suggest you to listen to ‘Abigail’, ‘Them’ and ‘Conspiracy’ immediately afterwards. They are the reference works.

Album:

2 DVD + 2 CD DIGIPAK - DVD format includes two live concerts Pro-Shot in HD, where KING DIAMOND performed 'Abigail in Concert' * June 17th, 2016 from GRASPOP METAL MEETING in Belgium, where KING DIAMOND headlined Main Stage #2 with support from AMON AMARTH * November 25th, 2015 from THE FILLMORE in Philadelphia, PA * CD includes the audio recording from THE FILLMORE concert.I’ve been a fan of King Diamond (and Mercyful Fate) for as long as I’ve been a fan of heavy metal, which is close to 20 years. As a kid and living in Brazil, I couldn’t attend King Diamond’s or Mercyful Fate’s concerts in the 1990’s in my home country for being too young, so it was only in 2017 that I was able to see the great Dane and their faithful band in my hometown, but damn, it was worth the wait.Playing exactly the same setlist as the band’s upcoming DVD – and subject of this review -, the King, Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead (guitars), Matt Thompson (drums) and Pontus Egberg (bass) provided ace instrumental, perfect execution and masterful atmosphere, bringing tears to young and old alike. That same atmosphere and sense of nostalgia can be traced back to the band’s two shows featured in this DVD. The first one, a huge and epic performance at the 2016 Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, showcases the King’s monstrous crowd-control power, as every metalhead in that sea of humans, leather jackets and sweat was left mesmerized by the theatrically inspired nuances and trademark falsettos. The second, an extremely similar display of what I experienced in Brazil: an intimate, tailor-made spectacle where band and audience were equal parts of a thrilling experience, this time around in a smaller venue – The Fillmore in Philadelphia, PA, US – in 2015.The art direction and the photography are top notch and will definitely put you very close to the action, from LaRocque’s prolific and meticulous riffing to the camera itself waltzing in the stage, making you see and hear the Grandma in “Welcome Home” or King himself stabbing a wonderfully hilarious Abigail doll in the initial part of “Funeral”. All cameras add to a really cool sense of immersion. As for the music itself, there is little to be said about King Diamond’s 1987 masterpiece ‘Abigail’ – which is played in its entirety here – and about classics such as “Sleepless Nights”, “Eye of the Witch” and the beautiful holy trio of “Halloween”, “Melissa” and “Come to the Sabbath”. All of those are executed to perfection and with the extra flavor provided by the powerful and loud drumming of Matt Thompson, as well as King’s falsettos – accompanied by Livia Zita’s soothing backing vocals -, which are actually scary if you think that they’re coming from a 60+ year old man. From Grandma’s wheelchair to Abigail’s coffin, from the ghost surrounding the stage to the constant changes of lighting and scenario, the professionalism allied to the extremely high skills of the musicians makes for the macabre and spectacular aura throughout both concerts, particularly more so in the Philadelphia one. The shows are thrilling, aesthetically beautiful, and musically perfect. You’ll feel chills with the organ bits of the ‘Abigail’ set, get mesmerized by LaRocque’s acoustic intro in “The 7th Day of July 1777” and be fearful of the omens and the apocalyptic ending with “Black Horsemen” and “Insanity”, not to mention travel back in time listening to the solos and the strong bass lines.‘Songs for the Dead Live’ is the ultimate King Diamond concert experience turned into DVD. There isn’t a single note out of key, a single camera take that could be better from a different angle, or a single second when you would think that something could be better; it’s a product made to equally please visually, musically and from a nostalgia point of view. The only downside for me is that both concerts feature the exact same setlist, which could easily be prevented by changing a couple of tracks from one to the other – God knows (well, Satan knows) King Diamond has plenty of classics to spare. This is a must-have for every heavy metal fan, not just King Diamond ones, as it is an epitome of all we love: organic, passionate performances, visually appealing, haunting moments and – best of all – a perfect homage to the heydays when band and audience would unite as one for a seminal experience. All hail the King.

Album:

On October 30th, King Diamond will release new CD and LP versions of his classic DARK SIDES EP via Metal Blade Records. The vinyl editions are in spinesleeve format with insert and a download card. The CDs come as mini vinyl replica with hardcover gatefold sleeve, poster insert with lyrics and CD in vinyl look. originally released in 1998, The Dark Sides contains five songs and one outro ! King Diamond explains: "These are not remasters, the albums are exactly as they were, straight from the original production masters. They contain all the dynamics as they were brought on tape back then. I am therefore very happy to make the recordings available to fans in their original state!
