The band Burning Witches was founded during spring 2015 in Brugg, beautiful Switzerland, by guitar player Romana Kalkuhl. It has always been her big dream to perform with a women's heavy metal band on stage. During the music university studies she already started her first group together with Kevin Schaffer: ATLAS & AXIS with which she has already recorded two albums and played several concerts!In 2015 Romana started to look for talented ladies for the new combo. Jeanine Grob (bass) a longtime friend, became the first official member. At a party on a festival Romana met Seraina Telli (singer) for the first time. It clicked right away betweens the two girls, on a musical and on a personal level. Seraina brought in many ideas and a lot of experience cause of her studies at the Music Academy and her band SURRILIUM. The guitarist and the singer became a great songwriting team right away!Romana wrote her mate Schmier from DESTRUCTION / PANZER about her new project, he was interested in the new outfit and the ladies brought him onboard as a producer / consultant!After an intensive search and different auditions, BURNING WITCHES found Lala Frischknecht the perfect drummer for the all chick metal band . Since summer 2015, the girls have been working hard on new material and in autumn 2015 they recorded the first three songs with VO Pulver at Little Creek Studio (PANZER / PRO PAIN / DESTRUCTION). The search for the right band name was kind of easy, because if four crazy girls burn hard for Heavy Metal, they can only call themselves BURNING WITCHES

Sometimes a band will come seemingly out of nowhere and strike a chord with you. Such is the case with Switzerland’s Burning Witches. At first glance I thought they were new to the scene, but the band’s debut self-titled album (co-produced by Destruction’s Schmeir and V.O. Pulver) came out in 2017, just two years after the band’s formation. Their debut record is packed with heavy riffs, chugging rhythms, and explosive vocals that would immediately appeal to fans of bands such as Judas Priest, Dio, Iced Earth, and Grave Digger. With Hexenhammer, the quintet’s sophomore follow-up, the ladies take it to another level.Fronted by the aggressive and mammoth vocals of Seraina Telli (Surrilium), Burning Witches grab you by the throat from the first notes of the opening single, “Executed”, a song about the harrowing life (and death) of Switzerland’s‘last Witch’ Anna Göldi. The track kicks off with a dual guitar attack from Romana Kalkuhl and newcomer, Sonia Nusselder (who also handles bass for Sepiroth and Ursinne). Telli showcases a wailing yet gritty voice that sounds like an amalgamation of Rob Halford, Sabrina Kihlstrand, Warrel Dane, and Doro Pesch, while Kalkuhl’s fingers are electrifying on the fretboard. All of this is propelled by the thundering rhythmic precision of bassist Jeanine Grob and drummer Lala Frischknecht.The pace slows a bit for “Lords of War” which has a big hooky chorus and a melody that reminds me a bit of Ice Age. This is followed by the trilling guitar intro of “Open Your Mind” which segues into a crunchy and galloping grinder. The requisite power ballad takes the form of “Don’t Cry My Tears” which has a poignant and wandering flow to it, adding a nice balance and tempo change for the record.The tempo kicks up again on the biting growler, “Maiden of Steel”. There is something of a Manowar epicness to this one, and that spills over into the next track, “Dead Ender”. Tolling of bells, rain, and tormented souls pave the way for this lumbering beast. Telli finds a bewitching yet emotive groove vocally, and she simply soars in spots down the home stretch. It’s one of my persona favorites on the record and has a big Dio-esque feel to it.The album’s title track and video, according to the band, “dives into the story of Malleus Maleficarum, written by the discredited Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer, to legitimize his cruel deeds against woman in the 15th century.” The song showcases the band’s heaviness and metal authority.The breakneck speed returns on “Possession” which winds down the album alongside the dark menace of “Maneater.” As they did with Priest’s “Jawbreaker” on the debut record, Burning Witches take on the iconic Dio track, “Holy Diver”. It’s always a gutsy move to emulate a legend, but Burning Witches handle it with aplomb. Telli’s vocal inventiveness is captivating and I cannot imagine anyone not falling in love with their take on this one, or at least granting due admiration.Overall, the Burning Witches sound blends elements of traditional and power metal with some bits of thrash swirled in. The result is a style that sounds classic yet equally modern. Schmeir and Pulver returned to help with the production and arrangements on this album, but it is the maturity and growth in the songwriting that stands out most. Hexenhammer resonates with a spectacular metal dynamism, and absolutely delivers the proverbial goods. This album should be on quite a few “best of, year-end” lists for 2018. The fact that Burning Witches has found such a natural groove so early in its relative infancy bodes well for what fans can expect in the future.

Swiss all woman heavy metal group ‘Burning Witches’ have been making waves in the world of metal music for all the right reasons. Their self-titled debut album and 2018’s Hexenhammer established these ladies as seasoned musicians with brilliant talent blessed with the ability to write some great songs with a style reminiscent of some giants in the genre yet maintain a certain individuality. Post being singed up by Nuclear Blast and some line-up changes; frontwoman Laura Guldemond, Guitarists Romana & Sonia, Bassist Jeanie, and Lala Frischknecht behind the kit are all geared up to give us their third full-length studio release – Dance with the Devil.For starters the artwork is quite rudimentary with the band members posing in front of a very typically 80’s devilish backdrop. Now typically this band has a very generic heavy metal tone to their sound and structure, and while that continues to hold in this album, they seem to have added an extra layer of melody. the album starts off with an intro theme “The Incantation” and then quickly dives into “Lucid Nightmare”. The structure and melody are quite standard from the perspective of the genre and the pacing is steady with some amped up riffing, powerful singing and harmonized guitars, and pretty much makes up the DNA in terms of what the record has to offer. “Black Magic” is the ballad track of the album and has been done beautifully. There is some soul and emotion to its content. The structure is progressive in nature, it starts off acoustic and slowly graduates to a heavier tone and makes for an instant favourite. This album also has experimented with guitar work and some pieces have a hint of old school death metal in them like the likes of “Necronomicon” as well as some anthem based tracks like “Threefold Return” & “Battle Hymn” which features likes of guitarist Ross Friedman and Symphony X bassist Michael LePond. There is even some tribute to the 80’s hair metal scene with “The Final Fight” & “The sisters of fate”, the former being my personal favourite. The rest of this album is not new. Title track “Dance with the Devil” and “Sea of Lies” are both out on Youtube. The carrying very catchy chorus and some great riffage. “Wings of Steel” is also carried forward from their EP, which was also released previously as a single.Laura puts on a great show and has done some amazing singing and continues to be the shining light in this record. Her style is synonymous to the metal gods she is influenced by, and in a world full or growls and operatic, we could use more Halfords I also think its great to see more women in the metal industry. Proves two things, one; gender has nothing to do with it; two it gives perspective. All is not perfect with this record though, some may argue that the structure is repetitive and solo pieces lacklustre, but its important to keep in mind that not every new album put out today needs to be some sort of ground breaking mind shattering hasn’t-been-done-before experiment, and sometimes its nice to just kick back and enjoy it for what it is. And what it is; is a solid heavy metal album.‘Dance with the Devil’ may not be perfect, but it reminds us that not every album needs to be some sort of ground-breaking experiment, and that sometimes it’s nice to just kick back and enjoy a solid heavy metal album. And solid it certainly is.

The internal editorial consensus on the band can be gathered from the previous reviews, because the writers, who are not always on the same wavelength in terms of taste, should be quite competent and objective in this case.The fourth work, however, may be seen in a thoroughly positive light, despite the casting character of the band, another line-up change, the repeatedly unrealistic hype of the promo-breaker and the relatively short release interval. The Swiss ladies have managed to pack their obvious love of metal into a strong 61 minutes.This time, Judas Priest tributes like The Circle Of Five and Nine Worlds are once again not one hundred percent overwhelming, but with the addition of their own characteristics they offer less reason for criticism.THE WITCH OF THE NORTH is carried by epic songs (you read correctly, the girls can also do something proper!) like the sublimely forward marching title track,the multi-layered Tainted Ritual, the really catchy and yet ingenious hymn Thrall and the snappy Dragon`s Dream. Compositions that are obviously Manowar - inspired, and even more obviously not from today.In terms of heaviness, this time they also mess with thrash metal (Nine Worlds, among others) and create the best song in the band`s history with Flight Of The Valkyries,as it combines all the advantages of the band's sound. For once, the obligatory boring ballad Lady In The Woods is just as unimportant to the overall impression as Laura's (who otherwise delivers a great performance!) appallingly failed attempt in The Circle Of Five to even come close to holding a candle to Rob Halford. (With which I would like to refer once again to the fantasy author of the promo letter!).Impressive riffs, mostly varied fare and this time even a cover version, which has become very strong. So strong, in fact, that a certain Chris Caffery didn't miss the opportunity to record the solos. Fans can grab it without hesitation, but those who have been rather ambivalent about the band so far should still risk an ear. Ladies, if you keep it up like this, we might be in for a treat after all!

The band Burning Witches was founded during spring 2015 in Brugg, beautiful Switzerland, by guitar player Romana Kalkuhl. It has always been her big dream to perform with a women's heavy metal band on stage. During the music university studies she already started her first group together with Kevin Schaffer: ATLAS & AXIS with which she has already recorded two albums and played several concerts!In 2015 Romana started to look for talented ladies for the new combo. Jeanine Grob (bass) a longtime friend, became the first official member. At a party on a festival Romana met Seraina Telli (singer) for the first time. It clicked right away betweens the two girls, on a musical and on a personal level. Seraina brought in many ideas and a lot of experience cause of her studies at the Music Academy and her band SURRILIUM. The guitarist and the singer became a great songwriting team right away!Romana wrote her mate Schmier from DESTRUCTION / PANZER about her new project, he was interested in the new outfit and the ladies brought him onboard as a producer / consultant!After an intensive search and different auditions, BURNING WITCHES found Lala Frischknecht the perfect drummer for the all chick metal band . Since summer 2015, the girls have been working hard on new material and in autumn 2015 they recorded the first three songs with VO Pulver at Little Creek Studio (PANZER / PRO PAIN / DESTRUCTION). The search for the right band name was kind of easy, because if four crazy girls burn hard for Heavy Metal, they can only call themselves BURNING WITCHES

This following a chilling and atmospheric intro of Rise of Darkness. Burning Witches have lit the match and are gleefully eyeing up the tinder.There is a stupid amount of talent in this band, and even though some may bemoan the throwback metal sound they employ, absolutely no-one can deny that they nail the sound and vibe of the classic era. All while not sounding dated or repetitive. It’s why tracks like Renegade, Evil Witch, and World on Fire are so damn enjoyable.With a bountiful bevy of high-powered riffs, sharp hooks, growling and epic vocals, and more guitar solos than strands of hair left on an 80s loving head-banger’s head. The Dark Tower delivers the bombastic metal that Burning Witches have become so notorious for.Yet, they are also extremely capable of delivering melodic epics such as Tomorrow. Vocalist Laura really showing her range here and likely to drop a jaw or two.The frenetic energy and pounding heavy groove is back with the title track and Heart of Ice, following a creepy and sinister intermission called House of Blood. Burning Witches continue to show just how versatile they can be while demanding that listeners bang their head into oblivion. A demand that most will be more than willing to adhere too simply because The Dark Tower is such a blast.It’s pretty much non-stop heavy metal screamers and bangers from beginning to end and tops anything Burning Witches have done before. Yes, this is the highlight of their careers to date simply because they sound so confident, have refined their sound, are avoiding unnecessary padding, and lean completely into the anthemic side of their sound. Even as Arrow of Time, Doomed to Die, Into the Unknown, and The Lost Souls complete the album in colossal style. Burning Witches showing a high level of bravado right up to the very end.
