Bio:

Bayley was born Bayley Alexander Cooke in Birmingham, England on 29 May 1963.Bayley started his musical career as the lead vocalist of Wolfsbane, upon their formation in 1984. The first album, Live Fast, Die Fast, was released in 1989.Blaze Bayley (Bayley Alexander Cook), is an English heavy metal singer/song writer, born 29th of May, 1963. He is currently a member of Wolfsbane, he is also the former singer of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Blaze Bayley has released 6th studio albums to date, as well as 2 live albums and 2 DVDs.Blaze (1999-2007)...Following Blaze Bayley's departure from Iron Maiden in 1999, he formed his own band, BLAZE, in March that year. Bayley recruited guitarist Steve Wray, guitarist John Slater, bassist Rob Naylor, and drummer Jeff Singer, and signed a deal with German label SPV, releasing the band's debut studio album in 2000, Silicon Messiah. The album was followed up by Tenth Dimension in 2002 and the band's first live album in 2003, As Live As It Gets. After recording the live album, Jeff Singer announced he was leaving the band. Three months later, Rob Naylor was also leaving. Session drummer Phil Greenhouse and bassist Wayne Banks were hired for the rest of the Tenth Dimension tour until permanent replacements could be found. Guitarist Jason Banks was drafted in for a few gigs at the end of 2003 to cover for John Slater. At the end of 2003, Blaze began writing material for their third studio album, Blood & Belief. Phil Greenhouse was replaced on drums by Jason Bowld for recording and Dave Knight for touring. The band began to tour for the album shortly after it was released in 2004, but were set back again by the news that John Slater could not perform a large section of the tour. Despite rejoining the band later in the year, Slater eventually left the band in September with Steve Wray to form the band Rise To Addiction. Bassist Wayne Banks and drummer Dave Knight left the band to join the Robin Gibb band in September 2004.Blaze performed a number of shows in 2004 and 2005 with the lineup of Bayley, guitarist Oliver Palotai, guitarist Luca Princiotta, bassist Nick Douglas, and drummer Daniel Löble. The two guitarists were eventually kept on as full members. The band's lineup shifted once again when Löble quit to join German power metal band Helloween early in 2005 and when Douglas returned to another German heavy metal band, Doro. The two were replaced by unknown German musicians Daniel Schild and Christian Ammann respectively. With the new line up, Blaze began to work on a fourth studio album for a release in 2007, but in January that year it was announced the entire line-up had to part ways with Bayley due to serious financial matters. Following the lineup change, Bayley opted to rename the band under his name, Blaze Bayley.Blaze Bayley Band (2007-2011)..In February 2007, Blaze Bayley Band (also known as BBB) added guitarists Nicolas Bermudez and Rich Newport, bassist Dave Bermudez, and drummer Rico Banderra to the band and recorded the live DVD album Alive in Poland, released later on that year. Bayley announced that Rich Newport had left the band to pursue a career as a guitar teacher later on that year, and Jay Walsh would replace him onstage for the remainder of the tour. Jay was made a full member of the band in November 2007. Bayley also announced the addition of drummer Lawrence Paterson, formerly of British metal bands Chokehold and Shadowkeep at the same time.In July 2008, Blaze Bayley Band (BBB) released their debut studio album, The Man Who Would Not Die. The album also contained the band's first single, "Robot", despite only being available digitally. It is sometimes regarded as a mini-compilation as it includes many bonus tracks. The band recorded another DVD live at Z7, The Night That Will Not Die, which was released in March 2009. Blaze Bayley announced that the band started recording for their new album on 28 September 2009. A contest was run on the band's forum. The two first people who guessed the title of the new album received a free signed copy. The title was revealed to be Promise and Terror a few days later. The 2nd album Promise and Terror was released on 1 February 2010. Professional reviews have generally been very positive about the album. The album was produced by Jason Edwards. On 6 February 2010 BBB started their 2010 world tour in Dudley UK. They spent the next months playing the UK, France, Italy, Germany before leaving for the South American leg of the tour. They then returned to Europe later in the year.In May 2010 Larry Paterson, the drummer for the band left due to personal and professional reasons, although none were specified. Their manager, Anna, announced her departure from the band. She claimed that the band's idea of where to go next and hers were not in the same direction.Following the departure of Larry Paterson the Blaze Bayley Band engaged Claudio Tirincanti to continue the Promise and Terror tour.On 10 July 2010 Blaze Blayley claimed live on stage that his current album was his best-selling as a solo-artist shedding some light on the recent changes in his line-up and management. On 18 December 2010 they played a Big Bash at JB'S in Dudley Birmingham. Despite the snowy weather the band made it back from mainland Europe to play the show. The BBB embarked on a short European tour in early 2011 and were supposed to follow that up in May 2011 with more dates in the UK, however on 29 March via his official channels, Blaze Bayley stated that he had to part ways with the band due to both health and financial reasons.Solo career (2011 - present)On 31 March 2011, Blaze announced that he would continue as a solo performer working with different musicians. The new official line-up for live gigs features the confirmed Claudio Tirincanti on the drums, old occasional touring member "Deputy Dave" Andrews on the guitar, and two Belgian musicians (Steve Deleu and Nick Meganck) respectively on the other guitar and the bass. Later in the year, it has been announced that the same musicians will tour also with former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens.Alongside the reunion and new recordings of Wolfsbane, Bayley has played a two-week acoustic solo tour in the UK in Sept 2011 with fellow Wolfsbane guitarist Jase Edwards plus a few unplugged gigs in Italy with Andrea Neri on the guitar. Footage of the acoustic shows with Jase Edwards can be seen on the Official Blaze Bayley YouTube Page. Then the singer hit the stages of some summer festivals and after that has been travelling to the USA in October/November 2011 for his first full US Headline tour since his days with Iron Maiden, supported by North-American musicians of the Canadian band Man the Destroyer plus American guitarist Rick Plester, of international fame, who will work with Bayley in the near future. Blaze will finish the Promise and Terror world tour in December 2011 before beginning to write new material. On 19 August 2011 Blaze announced that recording of a live DVD filmed at his show in Antwerp, Belgium on 23 September 2011, in which he presented also the first new song with the renewed line-up, called "Black Country". In February Bayley 2012 he toured Russia with the other former Iron Maiden singer, Paul Di'Anno. On 18 December 2011 the last show of the Promise and Terror world tour took place at De Rots In Antwerp Belgium. High Definition footage from the penulitmate UK show on 15 December is available on the Official Blaze Bayley YouTube channel. On 26 December 2011 in a personal Christmas message on his website Blaze announced that his new album The King of Metal would be released on 8 March 2012. On the same day Blaze officially announced the first two legs of the King of Metal world tour on the official Blaze Bayley Facebook Page. The new line-up for the making of The King of Metal album (recorded between Italy and Holland, mixed by Tony Newton at Steve Harris home studio, Rick Plester in the Usa and Raoul Soentken in Holland) consists of 3 Italians: the confirmed drummer Claudio Tirincanti, bassist Lehmann (Matteo Grazzini), guitarist Andrea Neri. Other guitarist is young Dutch Thomas Zwijsen, who co-wrote most of the music of the new cd. The same line-up who recorded the album will be the next live band for Blaze Bayley in the King of Metal European Tour, which counts more than 60 gigs. The busy schedule of 2012 sees also an acoustic tour with Zwijsen (July), a North American tour (September), a few gigs with Wolfsbane (October), a second co-headlining tour with Paul Di'Anno in Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand (November), and the prosecution of the King of Metal Tour in Scandinavia (December).

Album:

After the release of the polarizing but in my opinion incredibly strong “The King Of Metal” last year, Blaze Bayley went on to perform several acoustic shows with his new and talented Belgian guitar player Thomas Zwijsen. They decided to do also a few acoustic tracks in studio for a new EP entitled “Russian Holiday”.This new release with a very beautiful cover artwork by Alberto Quirantes Calvo features new versions of four songs with the participation of Blaze Bayley that have been released during the past twenty years: “Stealing Time” from the Blaze record “Tenth Dimension” in 2002, “Soundtrack Of My Life” from the Blaze album “Blood & Belief” in 2004, “One More Step” from Blaze Bayley's 2012 output “The King Of Metal” and finally the legendary and well interpreted “The Sign Of The Cross” from the 1995 Iron Maiden release “The X-Factor”. The brand new title song can also be found on this release. The record is very simplistic and sympathetic. It focuses a lot on the well played acoustic guitars and a few violin parts done by Anne Bakker. These violin parts sound well and are not used in each single track but they sound a little bit too loud and don’t always harmonize with the guitars. The production is only of an average quality but the record is still enjoyable to listen to. Blaze Bayley's vocals are as they always are: emotional, strong but sometimes also a little bit out of tone. They sound a little bit better than on the last release though that had several technical mistakes despite its greatness. The highlight of the EP is the new track “Russian Holiday”. The guitar melodies are simply beautiful, the lyrics intriguing and personal and at the same straight to the heart instead of being too philosophical and last but not least Blaze Bayley delivers a passionate vocal performance. My favorite part is the surprising Flamenco bridge in the middle of the track that happens to be the most vivid moment on the entire record. This song is a really strong one and would have also had its reasons to be included on the last regular release. In the end, Blaze Bayley fans should absolutely get their hands on this entertaining gem. The new title track alone is worth your attention and money. Occasional fans can though skip this EP and should rather purchase the greatest hits compilation "Soundtracks Of My Life".

Album:

With the release of the compilation Soundtracks of My Life, Blaze Bayley celebrates his thirty years as a heavy metal singer. This record consists of two discs, contains a total of thirty songs and almost two and a half hours of music. We get to hear songs from Blaze Bayley's first professional band called Wolfsbane in form of "Tough As Steel", we get an acoustic version of the Iron Maiden epic "The Clansman", some rare b-sides like the powerful "The Day I Fell to Earth'', a wonderful collaboration with Sinnergod in form of the gloomy gothic rock epic "Wonderful Life" and even two completely new tracks in form of the tight "Hatred" and the weird ''Eating Children" that has a rather unusual structure and intriguing lyrics. This release really offers value for money. Instead of including numerous cover songs of the Iron Maiden years, Blaze Bayley focuses mostly on his solo career which is the right decision because it includes extremely strong material. A definite highlight is the dreamy power ballad "Stare at the Sun" which might be Blaze Bayley's best song ever. If the melancholic "Soundtrack to My Life" doesn't touch your heart and soul, you're either deaf or dead. And if you're not banging your head to "Ghost in the Machine", "Kill and Destroy" and "Voices from the Past", heavy metal is simply not your kind of music. Several songs have been remastered and sound much better than the original versions. A lot of fans criticized the production of Blaze Bayley's previous studio effort The King of Metal and that's why this compilation includes revamped versions of ''The King of Metal" and "Rainbow Fades to Black". These new versions sound much improved and do these two great tracks justice. Aside of the music, Blaze Bayley offers a very detailed booklet with personal anecdotes and comments for every song in addition to lyrics and pictures. This compilation is as great as it gets and it's obvious that Blaze Bayley invested a lot of money, passion and time into this product. Every heavy metal fan should purchase this release and show Blaze Bayley the attention and respect he deserves, no matter if you are a faithful fan, occasional fan or not even a fan yet. As I mentioned earlier, if you call yourself a heavy metal fan, this release should be in your collection.

Album:

British heavy metal vocalist Blaze Bayley (IRON MAIDEN, WOLFSBANE) will release his eighth solo album, "Infinite Entanglement", on March 1, 2016. The cover artwork for the CD has just been unveiled and can be seen below.Speaking to Rock-Radio UK last month, Bayley stated about the upcoming effort: "It's a concept album. My first solo album was influenced by science fiction and a lot of my favorite books and also things that are happening in science fiction and artificial intelligence — with 'Silicon Messiah'; that was my first one. And then I did a full concept album with my second solo album called 'Tenth Dimension'. This follows on, really, from both of those albums, some of the ideas that I had back then, as well as some of the things that are happening in quantum physics; I've become more interested in that. So, using that, really, it's a story about someone who doesn't know if they're human. And I'm writing a book, and the album is based on the things that happen in the book."He added: "All the fans that I've spoke to and told them about the concept and the idea, they all seem really into it. So I'm very excited."Regarding the musical direction of his upcoming disc, Blaze said: "I'm not really limiting myself on this album. So there are elements of music that are the same as my first two solo albums, and also of my last album, and of my acoustic album."He continued: "We've got most of the album finished. I've still got some lyrics that I've left open, but most of it's finished. And now it's listening through to these demos from rehearsals and going through those lyrics and checking them and making sure that they're not embarrassing, and all of that, and then we start recording on the 1st of December."Bayley also talked about how he is getting his hardcore fans involved in the making of his new album. He said: "I had an idea for a song. Because it's a concept, there's a certain part of the story where my central character is in a dream, and he doesn't quite know what he's hearing. And it's messages from his past, and it's people saying, 'Where are you?' And so, I thought, well, what I wanted was, not just in English, but in different languages, I wanted this phrase: 'Where are you?' And I thought it might be something that I could involve my fans in, 'cause I need about a hundred people saying 'Where are you?' at different times to create this kind of dream, almost nightmare, and it's an intro to one of the songs on the album. So what I've asked people to do is say the phrase, and I've put a demo of the phrase and a couple of different people saying it, so they know the kind of cadence to use. And they say it in their own language, and then they send me the sample. And the best ones then I'll use in the song on the album. Someone would have to do it, so I thought, 'Well, why not get my fans who actually support me to do it?'"The 52-year-old Bayley, who was born in Birmingham, was the original frontman in WOLFSBANE, but left in 1994 to join MAIDEN, with whom he recorded two studio albums — 1995's "The X Factor" 1998's and "Virtual XI" — before Bruce Dickinson returned to the group.

Album:

British heavy metal vocalist Blaze Bayley (IRON MAIDEN, WOLFSBANE) will release his ninth solo album, "Endure And Survive (Infinite Entanglement Part II)", on March 3, 2017 via Blaze Bayley Recording. The record is an exciting and enthralling sequel to his 2016 release "Infinite Entanglement", which was the first of a trilogy of releases following a sci-fi concept and storyline."Endure And Survive" will be accompanied by a world tour totalling some 120 shows. The European leg of the tour takes place principally between February and June 2017. After a small number of summer shows, Blaze will then go to the United States and Canada during August-September. It's also planned to take the tour to Latin America in 2018.Throughout this world tour, Blaze will be backed by his main recording and touring musicians, picked from British metal band ABSOLVA and including Chris Appleton (guitar, backing vocals), Martin McNee (drums), Karl Schramm (bass, backing vocals). In addition to the established bandmembers as above from ABSOLVA, "Endure And Survive" also contains a talented array of collaborators: Luke Appleton (ICED EARTH, ABSOLVA) on backing vocals; Michelle Sciarrotta on nylon acoustic, backing vocals, voice actor; Jo Robinson on backing vocals; Mel Adams on backing vocals; Liz Owen on backing vocals; Thomas Zwijsen on nylon acoustic, Anne Bakker on violin, backing vocals; Corvin Bahn (Uli Jon Roth) on accordion; Aine Brewer (voice actor); and Rob Toogood (voice actor) on backing vocals. The spectacular album artwork has been completed by Andreas Sandberg, with additional images from Christopher Steenstrup who is also working on a Blaze Bayley video game."Endure And Survive" was recorded between October and December 2016 at Robannas Studios, Birmingham, produced by Blaze Bayley and Chris Appleton, mixed and engineered by Miguel Seco, mastered by Ade Emsley (IRON MAIDEN, TANK, PHIL CAMPBELL). As with the previous record, the songwriting has been a collaboration between Blaze, Chris Appleton and Michelle Sciarrotta. The first single from the new album will be available early in February, along with a music video.2014-2015 was a period of building momentum for Blaze, partly created by the highly popular release of the fifteenth anniversary edition of his debut solo record, "Silicon Messiah", as well as his "Soundtracks Of My Life" thirty-year compilation celebrating his career since he began singing with his first band WOLFSBANE, before catapulting to worldwide fame with IRON MAIDEN.2016 saw a significant renaissance with the remarkable plaudits given to the "Infinite Entanglement" album from fans and critics alike. The year was also notable for Blaze's special guest performance with DISTURBED at the U.K.'s premier festival Download when the warmth and recognition from the crowd was as crystal clear as it was predictable given Blaze's reputation for connecting with audiences.

Album:

Blaze Bayley is no stranger to the acoustic format. A well-established partnership with classical guitarist Thomas Zwijsen has resulted in numerous reinterpretations of the singer’s extensive catalog in and out of Iron Maiden, as well as the occasional ballad on his most recent solo outings. December Wind is a big step forward for the collaboration; aside from a take on “2AM” (Gotta fill out that Maiden quota somehow), this is all original material. The results are admittedly gimmicky, but the premise certainly wasn’t taken lightly. The songs all keep to a three to four-minute average and the presentation rarely moves beyond vocals, guitars, and Anne Bakker’s occasional violin, but the songs themselves are surprisingly varied. “Love Will Conquer All” and the title track opt for the expected balladry, but the flamenco struts on tracks like “Eye of the Storm” could’ve easily fit the full heavy metal format. The session even shows a light-hearted side with the two-minute singalong “The Love of Your Life.”Of course, the presentation does get a little rough at times. Blaze’s wailing baritone has the same lack of subtlety as it does on his metal material, sometimes drowning out the softer guitar work and adding a little silliness to tracks like “Miracle on the Horizon.” A little restraint probably would’ve benefitted the material, but Blaze’s enthusiasm is endearing in just about any format. If anything, I find myself wishing that the guitars on “2AM” weren’t so fast; such a somber song needs the breathing room that only a slower arrangement could provide.Overall, December Wind won’t add too many staples to Blaze Bayley’s repertoire, but it’s a pleasant listen that highlights his sincerity as a performer. With so many veteran musicians trying for the “unplugged” format, it’s refreshing to see Blaze and Zwijsen do more than bank on familiarity. I’d stick to Wino or Dax Riggs if you want the best of metal gone acoustic, but Blaze fans should appreciate this.

Album:

And now, the end is near, and so we face the final curtain. Or something similar anyway, given that “The Redemption Of William Black” sees the end to the “Infinite Entanglement” trilogy. Three albums in three years that seem to have given the redoubtable Blaze Bayley his spark back. The first track here is called “Redeemer” and it is not too much to say that with its spoken word parts, the way it builds and the brilliant solo played by Chris Appleton of Absolva (who in effect are Blaze’s band for these endeavours) it is everything that has ever made British Heavy Metal great. Furthermore, it is probably not too trite to suggest either that Bayley himself – never mind the central character in these songs – has found redemption in such an ambitious project.Because, if some of his work after the stunning “Man Who Would Not Die” record seemed a little lacklustre by comparison, then that hasn’t been the case with anything in the last couple, nor is it here.“Are You Here” is a simple metal gallop, while “Immortal One” is particularly interesting, because in many ways it encapsulates all that Bayley gets just right. It has an epic feel, but it is only just over three minutes long, and there is nothing forced about it. That is just natural at this stage, and ten albums in he’s entitled to a trademark delivery, which is right to the fore here. The eerie chanting at the start of “The First True Sign” seems to highlight the ambition the album contains, but also the chug of its music merely reinforces just how expertly this is played throughout. Nowhere, perhaps, is this better shown than on “Human Eyes”, which you could say was acoustic, except for the very crucial fact that Bayley couldn’t do stripped down if he tried, and all credit to him.Chris Jericho, no less, appears for the spoken word bits on “Prayers Of Light” and its fists in the air glee captures the testosterone fuelled zeitgeist perfectly. And if “18 Days”, which features superb harmony vocals from Liz Owen sounds very much like it should be on an Iron Maiden record (you kind of have to mention Eddie and the boys on a Blaze review, and it isn’t something he shies away from either given his sound), then it is still expertly done. There is a foray into out and out hard rock for “Already Won” and “Life Goes On” sees Bayley articulate the despair of the character exquisitely, indeed, there are echoes of Geoff Tate in the way he plays the part with aplomb, and “Dark Side Of Black”, takes on an almost thrash element with its double kick drumming. The record – and thus the trilogy – ends with the mighty epic of “Eagle Spirit”. Over nine minutes of class and quality and the way it builds, shows just how much of a labour of love this has been for Blaze and the band.A fantastic three records, you can pay them no higher compliment than this: if they were standalone albums, they’d all be brilliant, but the story, the theme, the character building take them to another level. This is a fine way to end it. And he did it his way.

Album:

British metal artist Blaze Bayley releases his 11th studio recording, moving forward from the success of his ‘Infinite Entanglement’ trilogy released in consecutive years 2016-2018. The 10 brand new songs, co-written with guitarist Christopher Appleton, draw influences from Blaze’s experience as singer with British metal goliaths Iron Maiden (1994-1999), plus his extensive solo career which started with his legendary ‘Silicon Messiah’ album in year 2000.If you like your rock of the metal variety you are in for a treat – this is a blistering, classic metal album in the making. The guitar work is simply put superb – exquisite riffs throughout the tracks and the power of Blaze’s vocals are the perfect accompaniment.Blaze Bayley has a respectable rock pedigree, fronting Iron Maiden 1994-1999 and Wolfsblane since, he’s been solo since 2000 and this is his 11th studio release, following on from the ‘Entanglement Trilogy’ released 2016-2018 In Blaze’s own words… “This is an album that I want to put on and feel very positive about. Whatever song you choose there’s some good feeling about it. As fans of metal music we tend to be damaged, strange and different in some way and this album is about taking your future in your own hand.” ‘War Within Me’ was recorded during 2020, coping with the challenges of a global pandemic by splitting the work between Blaze’s studio in the West Midlands and Christopher Appleton’s studio in Greater Manchester. The line-up chosen to play on the album are from British metal band Absolva – Christopher Appleton (guitar, backing vocals), Martin McNee (drums), Karl Schramm (bass). The album delivers 10 tracks with 3 tracks paying respect to people, Blaze clearly has looked up to and being inspired by – ‘The Dream of Alan Turing’, the Father of theoretical computer science and AI (artificial intelligence), ‘The Power of Nikola Tesla’ (electrical and mechanical engineer best known for his contribution to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply) and ‘The Unstoppable Stephen Hawking’, the renowned theoretical physicist “Hawking defied them”, “Unstoppable – Don’t believe in what they tell you, you can decide how you live” “you have strength within, and they don’t want you to find it, you can decide how you live” I think that will resonate with many of us after a year of lockdowns and isolation, we have all had to dig deep and music has been a real lifeline in these strange times – you can appreciate perhaps more than ever before, how others may feel when our world is ‘normal’.My pick of the tracks – ‘Flights’ -where Blaze refers to life on the road and travelling, ‘Witches Night’ which is theatrical and you’d be forgiven for thinking this could be Iron Maiden, as Blaze pays homage to his metal roots and a craft well learnt. For any metal heads, this is a must listen to release – let’s hope Blaze is back on the road soon as this needs to be showcased live!

Album:

Blaze returns with another fiery and anthemic album of heavy metal. Blaze has been on a roll for the best part of a decade now. Since harnessing the considerable talents of British metal heroes Absolva- now further bolstered by Luke Appleton joining the team to work alongside his brother- Blaze has been on a musical winning streak. He managed three albums in three years with the “Infinite Entanglement” Trilogy, followed that up with a superb collection of songs in “War Within Me”, plus a couple of live albums and DVDs.Blaze and band are exceptionally hard working- the pandemic was a cruel period as it left them kicking their heels while they couldn’t tour. Significantly, Blaze suffered a near fatal heart attack in 2023, so the fact he is still at all here is a blessing. The fact that the quality of his records is still very high is a real gift to the fans. After coming close to death, Blaze could be forgiven for dialling things down, going acoustic, reducing touring or even just retiring. However, a short run of UK dates last year were a triumph- the voice, the energy and the life force were still there. That life force runs right the way through this record. “Circle of Stone” is a life affirming winner, that’s for sure.Things start confidently with “Mind Reader”, “Tears of Rain” references Blade Runner and is even better. “Rage” is a darker proposition and finds Blaze delivering a superb vocal performance. It delivers a Welsh folk tale, via heavy metal. Excellent. As usual with Blaze’s recent records, the pacing and sequencing is great; each track is different from the last and has its own personality- but it doesn’t sound disjointed. On the contrary, Chris Appleton has done a good production and mix job here, allowing the album a distinct sound and character. Sonically, it sounds much better to my ears than “War Within Me”. I’m unclear as to whether a pro studio was used or if this was a home production, but it doesn’t matter as it sounds great. The drum sound is significantly improved and the instruments are nicely blended with Blaze’s voice front and centre.According to the man himself, the first six songs here represent tales of resilience, fighting against the odds and so forth. It’s prime Blaze stuff and expertly delivered. As the band blast through “The Year Beyond This Year” and “Ghost in the Bottle” the record flies high. It comes back to earth with “The Broken Man”, which is more introspective and a slow burning emotive listen. Any listener might think this was written in the wake of Blaze’s health problems, but in fact this entire album was recorded before his dance with death. The latter six tracks here represent six connected tracks that tell a story of connection to the past and redemption. “The Call of the Ancestors” kicks side two off in grandiose (mostly) instrumental style; bagpipes, guitar, ethereal vocals…. It sets the scene for the mighty title track. It’s majestic, it recalls “The Clansman” and is a killer. “Absence” is a straight up rocker, with killer riffage and guitar work in general. From there, it’s three tracks remaining. Numerous moods and approaches are covered; the melancholy and murderous tale told in “A Day Of Reckoning” gives way to hopefulness, while “The Path of the Righteous” engages the turbo charger for a convincing metal romp. “Until We Meet Again” caps the album off with acoustic atmospherics and a haunting guest vocal from Tammy Rae-Bois, who duets stirringly with Blaze. It’s a folk-y and hopeful conclusion to an album with hidden depths and themes. To summarise, “Circle of Stone” continues the high-quality music that Blaze has been putting out since 2016 and offers some different aspects to his writing and sound. It’s a triumph, it’s a tour de force and I’m so glad he is still here.
