At this point it is becoming redundant to say ‘here is another great band from Italy’. Aw, what the hell, here is another great band from Italy. They are called Temperance, they play melodic power metal with modern metal touches and have just released their self-titled debut via Scarlet Records. The band is fronted by Chiara Tricarico who has previously been with the band Lust For Oblivion – who were (is?) a killer band in their own right.The opening track “Tell Me” comes racing out of the gate with its up-tempo melodic power metal gallop. In fact, the band maintains its up-beat pace all the way to the fifth song “Stronger” which starts off as a ballad before settling into a mid-tempo groove. This proved to be a great song with duel male/female vocals and a killer melody. “Scared and Alone” begins with a little electronic piece before evolving into this great heavy track. The song reminded me a bit of Amaranthe especially with the cohesiveness of the two vocals and the melody. But it is on this track that I realized that Temperance should be a force to reckon with. “To Be With You” is another cool up-tempo track. Other highlights includes: “The Fourth Season” and “Relentlessly”.The songs on the debut Temperance release are so damn catchy and upbeat that this album – for me – was impossible not to like. If you have a leaning towards the power metal genre, Temperance is certainly a band that I whole-heartedly recommend.

Temperance is back with the sophomore release “Limitless” and as predicted/foreshadowed, the album takes a more distinctive directional turn towards Amaranthe, but fortunately, with enough Delain and Italian songwriting/musicianship to balance. Over the year since the release of the debut from the musicians who were once known as Bejelit, I began padding my mind with enough psychic cushion to soften the distraction of glitzy "popcore" keyboards while straining to hear what lies beneath. Pushing aside the glitz will reveal the heart of Italian power/progressive still beating – one that produces excellent songwriting, fantastic solos and a vocalist who can actually sing rather than belt out "Cavalleria Rusticana." If you can bear the glamour and core style vocal distractions, in many ways “Limitless” is superior to its predecessor. Unfortunately, even a strong will may not be able to overcome.Let's get one thing straight - a band should not be faulted for trying to make a living. What many call “selling out” is akin to deciding that every band must cater to the whim of every listener, with no care towards the lives musicians try to lead – especially in this day and age. Temperance has molded its sound in a way to make itself globally appealing, keeping an ear to the trends that will allow the group to circle the globe and realize a dream. This doesn’t mean everyone has to like that style, just look around – there are thousands of bands that can garner one’s attention. The same can be said for Amaranthe, which has cracked the U.S. market, sadly something that Olof Morck’s incredible fantasy power metal act DragonLand has yet to do. Temperance recently cracked the U.S. market and “Limitless” will only widen the door to hopefully an east coast run.What “Limitless” presents is a formula that is currently hot: the three singer mold – one female, two male (harsh/clean) - and elements of symphonic, pop, core, Scar Symmetry-esque modern metal, all creating a symbiotic relationship. It all boils down to whether you find it palatable or not. Apparently, this works and finds appeal with a large fanbase – where fans can bounce and have their fun. I’m sure hordes of teenage fans will fall for tracks like “Here & Now” and “Save Me.” Temperance plays it so well and is actually superior to bands like Amaranthe because rarely do the Italians completely abandon their roots. Patience and endurance will reveal that the heart of Bejelit still beats. You may take the renaissance out of Italian metal, but you can never take away that neo-classical training. It still shines…just buried beneath overbearing modernization.You can hear it in songs like “Side By Side” and “Burning,” two of the best songs the band has written, the former being the favorite. Marco Pastorino is among Italy’s best guitarists (with a voice to boot) and his riffs, solos, and melody lines are as great as ever, even if they are completely slathered by techno/dance style keys. Chiara is as uber talented as she is super attractive. However, if it were up to me, nixing the keyboards completely along with the harsh core vocals would allow the real music to breathe, but surely that would undermine what the band is trying to accomplish here. Bottom line…we don’t always get what we want. Other notable tracks include the Delain inspired tracks “Amber & Fire” and “Stay," "Mr. White," and the gorgeous piano driven “Goodbye.”As far as production, “Limitless” sounds top notch and expertly mixed. You can take Simone Mularoni’s name as your stamp of auto-perfection. For fans seeking bands with supercharged pop, core, modern influenced styles along the lines of Amaranthe, Temperance plays it with more style and grace than all of them. For fans of the classical influenced power/progressive style of Bejelit – it really is still there, only entombed behind a wall of glitz for which it will take “limitless” concentration to block the distractions.

Italians TEMPERANCE already released a couple a cool records but to me were too much Amaranthe-styled to make them worthwhile. But with their new album "The Earth Embraces Us All" to be released in few days, things have changed into a true signature sound, and what a great one they've achieved.After listening opener 'A Thousand Places' indeed it felt like I’d been to 1,000 places from modern metal to melodic metal to what can only be described as Kenny G. Don’t run away at that last part until you understand how gracefully introduced it is.When a band “finds maturity” it doesn’t mean they give up on metal… but all the added elements simply enhance what has become a dreadfully stale and overdone symphonic metal scene. Temperance represent the future of that. Call it “post- melodic symphonic metal” if you will. Or call it rock ‘n’ roll – that’s truly what it is.'At The Edge Of Space' hits you again with some aggressive guitars from guitarist Marco Pastorino while Chiara Tricarico’s stunning vocals flow throughout the song. An extremely catchy track which reminds me of some older Nightwish when the used to rock, and rock good.Unspoken Words' kicks off with an acoustic yet moving section that is enough to get your foot tapping right away. Once again the chorus line is outstanding and that intro melody reappears through out the song in all the right places with some fantastic guitar work.While temperance delivers here some material similar to their two previous albums like on 'Haze' – which also it's the disc heaviest track, the overall difference on this new CD “The Earth Embraces Us All” is that the glitz is kept in check, shrouded in and heavy riffs with direct and striking melody lines.Check out 'Revolution' for the perfect example. In fact, there is so much at work here that it takes multiple listens to sink in. The incorporation of violins, pipes, and even saxophone takes the listener on a journey with a very positive and poignant message presented in uplifting melodies and outstanding musicianship.Nowhere on the album is this better represented than the near 13-minute closer 'The Restless Ride'.Now we're talking... Temperance has really found their own style / sound on "The Earth Embraces Us All", and it's truly captivating.The band blend here light melodic metal, keyboard-driven sympho, and a bit of progressive with lots of poppy touches turning things very accessible, but if you dig deeper, very interestingly arranged. There's layers of vocal harmonies and strong metallic guitar riffs, but also a high dose of keyboards / synths resulting in greatly melodic & dynamic output."The Earth Embraces Us All" has both a social and musical message – we are one and diversity is key to our existence. The band has finally found its niche, hit its stride, and come into its own.

These records smack a little of cashing in on the loyal fan or casual listener. However, I’ve been feeling in a more forgiving and generous mood of late, so I thought I’d test my misgivings and prejudices, by checking out ‘Melodies Of Green And Blue’ from melodic symphonic metal band Temperance.One of the main reasons for delving into this record is because six of the eight songs are acoustic re-workings from the ‘Viridian’ album, a record that I really liked when it was released around a year ago in a pre-pandemic world. I’ll admit to being interested in hearing how Temperance’s music might sound in acoustic form and, with two new tracks to hear as well, I ran out of reasons not to check out ‘Melodies Of Green And Blue’.And it has to be said that I’m glad that I have taken the time to listen to this EP because the experience has been a broadly positive one. It certainly does enough to re-evaluate my preconceptions a little, that’s for sure. I feared that the songs would suffer by being acoustic renditions because Temperance thrive on that energy, power and a certain bombast to their normal compositions. And whilst the music here sounds very different to the originals, it actually works for the most part. The songs, despite being faithful to their roots, almost feel like they are completely different songs, originals in their own right.Unless I’m very much mistaken, these songs were recorded live in the studio, and that ‘live’ vibe really comes through as I listen. It’s almost like we’re taken into the studio and are sitting alongside the band as they jam out these songs with apparent smiles on their faces. It’s that chilled-out sense of fun and enjoyment that comes through most strongly here.In terms of the new songs, I may be totally wrong here, but I get the feeling that they were written as acoustic songs first and foremost because they have a slightly different feel about them than the songs taken from ‘Viridian’ which were metal tracks originally. ‘Paint The World’ is my favourite of the two, as it does feature some electric guitar embellishments. It also has some really nice melodies, whilst the three vocalists, Alessia Scolletti, Michele Guaitoli and Marco Pastorino come together to create some lovely harmonies. I really enjoy the rich bass tones from Luca Negro, which add to the song rather than dominate or disappear entirely. ‘Evelyn’ is a slower, softer, more ballad-like number, and is enjoyable as such.On to the re-worked tracks and ‘Start Another Round’ is fun, as it injects more of a blues edge to the song in place of the normal metal ‘chugging’ riff, led by guitarist Pastorino and bassist Negro. It’s also a track that fully accentuates the vocal ability of the trio of singers. Even in this live studio environment, they are on-point and come together perfectly, belting out the lyrics with passion and power. And ‘Gaia’, led by a rich-sounding piano, is the ideal ending to the EP; again, the vocals are delivered with conviction and emotion.At the end of the day, in spite of the various positives, this will not be viewed as an essential release by many. In fact, it will likely only appeal to existing ardent fans of the band or those that favour acoustic music. I would still recommend that the casual observer should take a listen though because, like me, it might result in a bit of a positive surprise. It’s a nice listening experience that offers an enjoyable window into another side of Temperance, and for me, it works. But it won’t work for everyone.

Temperance is born from musicians with more than 10 years of experience in the heavy metal music scene, who already worked with and supported live acts like Rhapsody of Fire, Dragonforce, Parkway Drive, Leave's Eyes, Rage and already played several shows in some of the most important European festivals.An amazing mixture of tight guitars, metal riffs, electronics tracks and folk music's elements, bounded together and enslaved to melody and power. Temperance is born in 2013 and since that year it works on its first full lenght album, released in April 2014 via Scarlet Records.

Italian maestros of modern melodic/symphonic metal Temperance unleash brand new, conceptual seventh album, called "Hermitage - Daruma's Eyes Pt. 2". Expanding the characteristic sound of the band with new membe, professional opera/metal singer and vocal coach Kristin Starkey, the essence of charismatic singer Michele Guaitoli (Visions Of Atlantis) and mastermind singer/guitarist Marco Pastorino (Serenity) reaches a higher level. Guest musicians like Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon), Fabienne Erni (Eluveitie, Illumishade) and Laura Fella (Faun) complement the exciting journey.Following the release of last album "Diamanti" in 2021 and this year's successful European tour with Tarja (ex-Nightwish), it is time for Temperance to open a new chapter! The quintet, which also counts on bassist and founding member Luca Negro, continues to evolve the sound with new drummer Marco Sacchetto who joined the band for the early 2023 tour dates, along with New York based singer Kristin Starkey, who adds a dark and powerful timbre to the band.Catapulted into another era by finding the Japanese doll, Daruma, protagonist Viktor wakes up in a magical village called Hermitage, exploring its secrets track by track. Getting into a fight between the siblings Anningan and Irin, only Viktor's destiny is the key for their conflict. The multi-talented Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) opens "Daruma" with galloping guitar passages while the dark timbre of singer Kristin Starkey introduces the villain Anningan. Followed by "Welcome To Hermitage", Temperance presents the magical world of Hermitage with fairytale-like flutes, twinkling chime elements and the vocal arrangements of singers Fabienne Erni (Eluveitie, Illumishade) and Laura Fella (Faun). "No Return" glances with the band characteristic singalong refrain and operatic fragments, while the track "Join Me" ranges from marvelous vocal harmonies to grand compositions. The spellbinding "Darkness Is Just A Drawing" and uplifting "Full Of Memories" gather the atmosphere of "Hermitage - Daruma's Eyes Pt. 2" once again, before "Cliff" closes the album with rising melodies, epic orchestration arrangements and inimitable vocal spotlights. The concept album was produced by Temperance guitarist and singer Marco Pastorino and mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni (Twilight Force & Immortal) at Domination Studio in San Marino.
