Bio:

"Heavy Metal" stands in large letters on the shirts of the Ruhrpott-Metaller FAIRYTALE and more description does not really need the music of the band. Because FAIRYTALE play metal of the traditional kind and add discreet Bay Area riffs to their sound, which ensure that the listener gets a decent metal board served.FAIRYTALE are well-known for their intense live shows, which offer a lot of humor, as well as a lot of singing anthem and straightforward metal. Fun is part of a good show for the band.FAIRYTALE have already been active as support for reputable acts such as RAVEN, HALLOWEEN (US), MENTORS, WIZARD, MOB RULES, RAGE, OMEN, SYMPHORCE, NEGURA BUNGET, TANKARD or BORN FROM PAIN.

Album:

What would you expect from a band called Fairytale? Grandiose symphonic power with sweeping string orchestras and bombastic choirs? Try again! Though you’re not a million miles away. These Germans possess the same sense of scope, but it’s channelled in a more raw and direct fashion. Think more of a cross between Iron Maiden and Iron Savior – rather than Fairyland or Thy Majestie. Battlestar Rising, their third full-length, certainly bears resemblance to an Iron Savior album, with its well-realized ‘space war’ concept. The atmospheric intro sets the tone of this concept perfectly. The crackling voice of the admiral is suitably anxious, both here and in “The Admiral’s Speech”. But when the gritty chug of the title track’s opening riff bores its way through the speakers, all anxieties are laid to rest. This energetic headbanger is a delightfully summative way to commence the album, and instantly erases all memory of the band’s graceful moniker. Double-bass thundering, guitars blaring and a singer giving it one hundred percent.Fairytale make the most of their dual guitar attack. Often, instead of a main riff, there lies a harmonious lead guitar melody which is then emulated in the song’s chorus. This record contains some damn fine melodies which, because they’re performed in the guitars’ upper range, leave room for the bass to have its own shining moments. This is especially notable three and a half minutes into the hard-hitting “Scar” – those beautiful guitars and that rumbling bass make a perfect fusion. Vocalist Carsten Hille also deserves praise for his sheer conviction and steady, powerful voice during the big choruses. Most of this album sits comfortably at a medium tempo. Not that that’s an insult – Fairytale are capable of stomping along at mid-pace quite proficiently. But the highlights are where the change in energy provides variety. The euro-power gallop of “Viper Pilots” sees the band unleash their inner Iron Savior; the dramatic “Colony” is a mammoth riff-fest of a song; and “The Opera House” almost becomes the ballad of the album, but its slow pace allows for some of the heaviest riff work on the album (the tam-tam and cannon sound effects didn’t go unnoticed!) A one-trick pony Battlestar Rising is not.The only serious gripe is that the songs seem to taper off unsatisfactorily. There are no crashing finales or big finishes – each track seems to just…end. But often, the commencement of the next track will pick the energy right back up again. After an average of five years between each album, hopefully Fairytale can pick themselves up into a routine of releasing new music more regularly. If Battlestar Rising is anything to go by, Colin Brinker and co. have a solid set of songwriting chops on their team, and would be fools not to use them. An excellent effort, and I can’t wait for the physical CD release.

Album:

Six years have passed since the release of "Battlestar Rising". During this time, the Ruhrpott metallers FAIRYTALE have been working on their new record "Army Of Ghosts". Like its predecessor, it is a concept album. This time, however, the band does not tell a continuous story. Instead, each song is inspired by a well-known horror story. This is reflected in all aspects of the record, from the creepy artwork with ghost ship and thunderstorm to the John Carpenter-like synth intro to the lyrics and the often dark atmosphere. FAIRYTALE don't do things by halves, but implement their concept coherently from front to back. But in the end, it's the music that counts - and it convinces all along the line. FAIRYTALE rely on classic heavy and power metal, as you have heard it many times before. But they avoid the endless riding on well-trodden cliché paths. The melodic guitar leads are often reminiscent of prog metal greats like OPETH. Drummer Fabius Farkas, on the other hand, relies on accentuated playing that regularly attracts attention, for example in the instrumental passages of "Morningside" or the mid-tempo stomper "Possessed". The latter also has a really catchy refrain, while the band ventures into spherical regions in the middle section.Another big plus on "Army Of Ghosts" is frontman Carsten Hille's powerful vocals. In the very highest regions he sometimes audibly reaches his limits. But apart from these rare moments, there is nothing to complain about. Hille offers the demanding vocal lines with plenty of power to do them justice.Last but not least, FAIRYTALE have provided the songs with a powerful production from Rambado Recordings. The mix is nicely balanced. Bass and drums come into their own very well, without taking away space from the guitars. Such a differentiated production is much too rare to hear nowadays.Fans of traditional metal sounds should definitely check out "Army Of Ghosts". FAIRYTALE have matured in every respect and deliver their best album so far.
