Bio:

When the gods called for metal traditional and true, Visigoth answered. The year was 2010, and Jake Rogers allied his bardic magic with Lee Campana’s six-string sorcery to forge a tribute to the old sound of heavy metal. Thus the demo “Vengeance” was born. Its completion sent tremors throughout the salted wastes of the Salt Lake City underground, attracting the attention of powerful musical forces. Jamison Palmer slung his mighty axe over one shoulder and trudged his way through the ice and snow of this inhospitable realm, lending his soul-rending riffcraft to the legion. He was soon joined by the mystical bass groove thaumaturgies of Matt Brotherton and the unrelenting storm-throned siege of Mikey Treseder’s furious drumming. Together, they became known as Visigoth. As a constellation they traveled throughout the Salt Lake valley, determined to liberate their allies from the enemies of true metal. All who heard their mighty riffs, scorching leads, and infectious choruses joined the Iron Brotherhood, becoming acolytes of all things heavy. After many hard-fought battles, the band came together to record the “Final Spell” EP in 2012, sealing the pact between them with rites ancient and sorcerous.Visigoth plays heavy metal that hearkens back to the golden age of ironclad riffwork and powerful vocals. They pay tribute to the titans of steel that left their mark on the history of the genre, and their earth-shaking sound echoes with a deep reverence for their roots. Visigoth goes above and beyond mere imitation, making their own musical mark on the genre they lovingly embrace. In Visigoth‘s realm, there are no frills, no gimmicks; there is only heavy metal.

Album:

Visigoth may be relatively new to the metal scene having formed in Salt Lake City in 2010, but they are already making tsunami-sized waves and their newest endeavor for Metal Blade Records The Revenant King is a prime example why.Their 2010 demo Vengeance and it’s follow up 2012’s Final Spell [EP] started the swell and The Revenant King will finish the job, leveling everything in it’s destructive path. The album was produced by Andy Patterson and mastered by Alan Douches. It is the story about the betrayal of a king and his subsequent revenge and features the mystical & mythical lyrics of Dio combined with the old school metal sounds of vintage Judas Priest and Manowar. The skull crushing heaviness of the guitar riffs and Jake Rogers blood curdling vocals on lines like “We rip your flesh from bone” in album opener and title track “The Revenant King” have undeniable barbaric appeal, while songs like lead single “Dungeon Master” and “Vengeance” are gimmick free herculean powerhouses that are as textured & absorbing as they are invigorating & unpredictable.Elsewhere, “Mammoth Rider” is an aurally grotesque slab of brutality that serves as an empowering rally cry and “Blood Sacrifice” and “Creature of Desire” are grandiose bone rattling proclamations that are incisive, but never indulgent. The band’s masterful cover of the Manilla Road classic “Necropolis” is the one and only song on the album that clocks in under 5 minutes, with most songs averaging between 6 to 8 minutes in length. At the same time the ominous hook laden melodies in “Iron Brotherhood” are vicious & unrelenting and “From the Arcane Misfits of Prophecy” is a nearly 10 minute fist raising anthem that closes the album on an epic high note. Here’s the bottom line- The Revenant King is a breathtaking modern take on the classic metal blueprint.

Album:

When first I heard “Final Spell,” the debut release of this Salt Lake City-based USPM outfit, my first thought was that they must have some pedigree that I wasn’t aware of. No band springs into existence out of the ether with a sound so tight and fully-realised, as easily competent and professional as the genre’s most seasoned veterans. Well, they do have a pedigree of sorts, but hardly the one you’d expect. Vocalist Jake Rogers, whose bellows ringing out like harmonic thunderclaps drive the EP’s four tracks, is best known as the mind behind the short-lived but much-beloved post-black metal act Gallowbraid. Visigoth’s classic brand of hooky, infectious, barbaric-romantic heavy metal is about as far removed from the tone and sensibility of Gallowbraid as it’s possible to get while still remaining under the heading of “metal” at all, so it’s a career move that comes out of left field to say the least. Still, you can’t argue with results.Visigoth’s songwriting draws on a wealth of influences from the US power metal scene of yesteryear, but the name that comes to mind more than any other is Virginia’s Twisted Tower Dire. “Final Spell’s” anthemic, call-to-arms quality conjured by its crashing power chords and booming vocal lines echoes that found on classics like “Crest of the Martyrs,” albeit produced with more of a low end and a crisper guitar tone more befitting a European act like Heed or Excalion. That’s far from a bad thing. Classy, well-written USPM is thin on the ground these days aside from the recent outings of Pharaoh and TTD themselves. These sorts of songs, straightforward, pounding paeans to strength and freedom, are simplistic both in the worldview they convey and the pleasures they provide, but there’s an honest joy and appreciation to be had in their exquisitely honed construction. As to these songs specifically, the twin highlights on “Final Spell” are the explosive opener “Creature of Desire” and the steely slow grind of “Seven Golden Ships.” The former boasts fantastically punchy and propulsive rhythm guitar work shared between Jamison Palmer and Leeland Campana and a main riff which, while melodically simple, conveys an ecstatic pitch of emotional intensity. It’s just the cherry on top that it also manages to work in a perfectly timed increase in tempo for the solo section, elevating what was already a joyful track to something near-sublime. “Seven Golden Ships” pulls off a similar gambit, but with the tempo reigned in to a slow, steady throb and with the emphasis placed firmly on a massive chorus hook that practically begs for a proud, communal crowd sing-along in a live setting (“We stand and fight! / We are immortal and unbound!”).The remaining two tracks represent slightly lesser achievements. The title track, similar to “Creature of Desire,” is an up-tempo rocker but conducted in a more relaxed and lackadaisical register. Comparatively speaking it’s rather poppy, like something you might expect to hear in the soundtrack of a racing videogame, although still remarkably well constructed for it. Much the same can be said for “Call of the Road,” which is dominated by a jaunty, bouncy rhythm that vividly recalls Twisted Tower Dire’s “Snow Leopard” (one of the weaker tracks, I feel, from the mainly superb “Make It Dark”), and into which Rogers throws arbitrary “woo!”s and “one-two-three-four!”s. The track is well-structured and catchy and memorable in its idiosyncrasies and all of the other positive qualities one looks for in this style, but it occurs as a bit frivolous compared to the solemn and exalted “Seven Golden Ships” immediately before it.Persistent throughout is Rogers’ excellent vocal performance, a powerful, clear and ringing baritone that would be impressive enough even without knowledge of his other instrumental talents outside of Visigoth. It accentuates the riffs perfectly, further adding character and charisma to an EP ripe with them regardless. Available for any price on Bandcamp, I can only make my usual appeal for underground support – Visigoth exhibit tremendous aptitude for their chosen style and for honest, affectless genre craftsmanship in a scene cluttered with poseurs and wannabes. I hope a full-length isn’t too far off.

Album:

Metal maniacs, rejoice! I’m proud to present to you: VISIGOTH; signed via Metal Blade Records, hailing from the United States of America - performing Power/Heavy Metal, on their 2nd album entitled: “Conqueror’s Oath” (released February 9th, 2018).Since formation in 2010; the quintet in question have a Demo, EP, a Single and a full length album in their discography so far. I’m introduced to their 2nd full length record entitled: “Conqueror’s Oath”; 8 tracks ranging at around 42:21, the quartet provide an intricately designed slab of solid Power/Heavy Metal distinctions. Opening with “Steel And Silver”, VISIGOTH arrange hard-hitting developments of melodic battle hymns - hardened with savagely sinister instrumentation and musicianship. Jake Rogers on vocals contributes rhythmically rough yet high-pitched vocalizations that’s proficiently executed.Consisting of Leeland Campana on lead guitar; the orchestrations here are profusely robust, as they pound with concrete consistency. “Warrior Queen” delivers unique songwriting adroitness; as the melodies continue to soar with blistering thunder, amalgamated with a primitive formula in which has an organic aesthetic of hammering creativity. Jamison Palmer also on guitar showcases complex dexterity, as the single “Outlive Them All” provides more relentless stability and nimble swiftness. Powerhouse bassist Matt Brotherton efficiently portrays a fluid substance of pummelling strumming, which coincides with the rhythmic balance exceedingly well. “Hammerferged” demonstrates elegant craftsmanship, diligently composed with elegant dynamics and exquisite fabrications which has an enlightening punchline foundation to it.Mike T. on drums pulverizes his set with dominating force, as in “Traitor’s Gate”, there is a progressively technical element to it. Thumping with bouncy implementations and detailed construction, which slams like a clap of thunder. “Salt City” unexpectedly changed the pace which manifested with a grandiose of Hard Rock catchiness and velocity, still keeping the power in the mettle at a excitable rate. “Blades In The Night” excelled with more groovy proficiencies as the sound production prominently demonstrates a tasteful supply of battering salubriousness, like a rampaging stampede frolicking in the distance.Overall concluding “Conqueror’s Oath” with the titular track itself, I did expect such a record to be this way and I am very pleased with the end result - Power/Heavy Metal devotees should certainly pick this one up.
