Bio:

Manilla Road is an American heavy metal band from Wichita, Kansas, founded by lead guitarist Mark 'the Shark' Shelton (vocals and guitar) (born December 3, 1957, Wichita, Kansas, United States).Manilla Road was created by Shelton in 1977 with high school friends Benny Munkirs, Rick Fisher and brothers Robert and Scott Park. After playing in local bars, the group first gained attention with their song "Herman Hill," inspired by the Herman Hill riot. Their first album Invasion was released in 1980 on the band's own label, Roadster Records. Between this time and their next release the band recorded material for an album to be titled The Dreams Of Eschaton, however this was not released until 2002 (under the name Mark of the Beast) as they were not happy with the sound. Shelton has been quoted as saying the music was "not metal enough" and "sounded like shit." Despite this Mark of the Beast was critically well received when it was eventually released. These early albums have more in common with progressive rock and proto-heavy metal than the band's later heavier speed/thrash metal sound. The next record was Metal, which began to define the future musical direction of Manilla Road. Their "classic" sound was solidified with the release of Crystal Logic in 1983.Manilla Road reformed and released Atlantis Rising in 2001, again with Mark Shelton as the only original member. On this occasion, however, the sound was much more consistent with the Manilla Road of old and it was the band who decided to continue using the name. Their latest albums were Spiral Castle, released in 2002, Gates Of Fire in 2005, and Voyager in 2008. A European tour took place in 2012.In 2007, Manilla Road was honored by Solemnity Music in Germany with the release of The Riddle Masters: A Tribute to Manilla Road. This double-disc release contains songs from 18 bands from all over the world playing their versions of Manilla Road classics. The son of the original rhythm guitarist, Robert Park, started an alternative rock band in 2002, The Canadian Lawyers. The Canadian Lawyers' rhythm guitarist is also Scott Park's nephew.Norwegian Heavy metal band Darkthrone mentioned the band in the song "Raised on Rock" on the 2007 album, F.O.A.D.In 1998, the Greek edition of Metal Hammer magazine released an unofficial compilation entitled, Live by the Sword - The Very Best of Manilla Road. However, this was compiled without the band's involvement or consent, and is therefore considered to be a bootleg recording.

Album:

Twelve years and six albums into the group's career revival (their remarkable legacy of course dates back as far as 1979), MANILLA ROAD's reputation as a living, breathing treasure of underground American heavy metal is beyond question. In fact, in an age when numerous, once equally obscure ancient metal legends are revered far and wide (e.g. PENTAGRAM, SAINT VITUS, etc.), on has to think that any persistent boundaries on MANILLA ROAD's public awareness and career ambitions are imposed only by band leader Mark Shelton's own desire (or lack thereof) for playing the self-promotion game - or else his band would surely have signed larger record deals by now, booked broader tours, played European mega-festivals, etc. But, whether he desires it or not, Shelton's much loved, creaky but resilient old heavy metal warhorse continues to gather steam in the marketplace, and perhaps the accelerated recording and release schedules undertaken by he and his band mates, of late (not to mention Shadow Kingdom's comparably more aggressive promotional efforts), are in fact proof that MANILLA ROAD is finally ready to step things up a notch: take the ride, enjoy the thrills, and see where it all leads. In any case, 2013's "Mysterium", which, depending on whether you count a few "lost albums," is MANILLA ROAD's thirteenth or fifteenth studio album, coincidentally seems to touch on almost every phase of the band's three-decade musical evolution, as though intentionally constructed by Shelton and co. to offer new and old fans alike something of a career-spanning compendium."The Grey God Passes" observes the hybrid approach common to the '00s, complete with occasional vocals from Bryan "Hellroadie" Patrick (a faithful Sancho Panza to Shelton's Don Quixote); "Stand Your Ground" revives the band's thrash-infused attack of the late 1980s; the all-acoustic "The Fountain" Shelton's experimental midlife crisis circa "Circus Maximus"; and the epic title track, along with its synth-designed introduction, "The Calling", the quasi-progressive, post-psychedelia ambitions of MANILLA ROAD's earliest, still formative years - juiced with latter-day metallic aggression.Having acknowledged that variety, of MANILLA ROAD's many inspirational facets through the years, the one that dominates proceedings is the same one that's persisted most reliably through each period: that being deliberate, majestic "castle metal" exemplified by "The Battle of Bonchester Bridge", "Hermitage", "Do What Thou Will" and "Hallowed be Thy Grave".And if any single track combines most everything that is special about this veteran metal proposition into a new career-spanning highlight, it's the virtually irresistible "Only the Brave" - proof positive that, far more than a nostalgia act, MANILLA ROAD is still kicking ass and taking names with "Mysterium".

Album:

Formed in 1977 Manilla Road have been on the cusp of becoming huge but never quite attained the success they so richly deserved."The Blessed Curse" is the bands 17th release, its full of songs that will please their adoring fans , showing exactly why this band have such a huge following in the Underground scene , this release has to be heard , loved , adored and worshipped. "The Blessed Curse" takes the listener into the time of the Sumerians its a majestic and intelligently thought through CD that is absorbing and shows the bands immense talents. There are so many highlights on here, The title track "The Blessed Curse" opens proceedings, its slow melancholic opening soon fires up into a spirited song."Tomes of Clay" is resolute and an amazing tune, its eight minutes of delightful musicanship taking you on a voyage of discovery , its a track I have played and played , its floating delivery is not only spine tingling, its a breathtaking piece as the story unfolds and when the song hits the six minute mark , it really sears into your heart with imposing guitarmanship, this is a phenomenal track. There are pile drivers with tracks like "Truth in The Ash" Which oozes Traditional Metal with some spellblinding riffs and drums to shake the dead alive! As indeed "The Dead Still Speak" sees the band execute and literally wake the deceased as the sharp talons of the dearly departed close around you , I love the lyrical content as Manila Road take you on a epic journey through ancient History. Then there are beautiful acoustics on tracks such as "Falling" the solo on here is sublime, a gorgeous ballad.Am sat here scratching my head as to why the hell this Band have never fulfilled their full potential, the delivery and passion on this album is out of this world.Theirs so much to adore and enjoy on here , there's doom laden riff's a plenty on songs like "Kings of Inventions" and "Luxiferas Light".Furious drums along with chugging guitars, emanate from your speakers on "Reign of Dreams" this whole album will have you hooked, its different shades of Metal will enthuse and bewilder your senses "Sword of Hate" delivers a cut of Metallic sustenance leading to final track "Muses Kiss" a epic tale to end "The Blessed Curse" Manilla Road have in recent years played at Sweden Rock,Hellfest and Metal Days Festival. All over Europe, South America, Canada - everywhere to full houses. Shared the stages with Kiss, Rush, Hawkwind ,Megadeth and bands such as Raven, Bullet ,Omen have opened for them to name but a few. After The Muse" includes mainly quieter songs ,songs that have evolved over several years and some of which were recorded with guest musicians. When viewing old tapes for the re-release series on Golden Core / ZYX met drummer Neudi on the song "All Hallow's Eve", which was recorded in the rehearsal room in the early eighties.Unfortunately, after about 12 minutes, the song ends and the last part of this piece is lost forever. The song has been recorded and also features the original version with the bands former drummer Rick Fisher. The result is pure old school Manilla Road! This album is a true Metal Lovers work of art as indeed is the album cover , Its an exceptional cover to go with a tremendous album ,the artwork Is an oil painting by Paolo Girardi.Possibly one of the albums of the year already! From True Metal Exponants ...

However, this was compiled without the band's involvement or consent, and is therefore considered to be a bootleg recording.

Album:

Manilla Road‘s unreleased “Mark of the Beast” album, recorded between Invasion and Metal, has been pressed to CD and LP by High Roller Records as Dreams of Eschaton.Manilla Road are a legend in their own right. The band that time forgot! Without the shadow of a doubt one of the most innovative American metal bands of all time. In the late 1970's, Manilla Road practically single-handedly invented what is today called Epic Metal. Hailed as US Metal pioneers (their debut album »Invasion« was released on their own Roadster label in 1980), the band from Wichita (Kansas) has set the trend for the current renaissance of Epic Power Metal. The band's second album »Metal« was once again issued via Roadster Records (seeing the light of day in 1982). In 1983 Manilla Road put out »Crystal Logic« considered to be their best album ever. This led to a deal with French label Black Dragon Records. However, not a lot of people know that in 1981 Manilla Road had recorded another album which was supposed to be following the release of »Invasion«. The long lost Manilla Road album called »Dreams Of Eschaton«, now issued in its original form by High Roller Records. The material has been carefully restored and remastered by Patrick W. Engel at his Temple Of Disharmony. The big question is why Manilla Road decided to record »Metal« and shelving the whole »Dreams Of Eschaton« project back in 1981? “We just did not feel the recording represented the true sound of the band at the time,” remarks Mark “The Shark” Shelton. “The studio we were recording in felt that inline recording technology was the way to go with us and so »Invasion« and »Dreams Of Eschaton« were recorded using analog guitar processors more than amplifiers and speaker cabinets. The same approach was used in the »Dreams Of Eschaton« recording and when it was all said and done I did not feel like the sound of the songs or the recording represented what the music sounded like live. So we put that project to bed so to speak and started working on new recordings using amps and speakers with the volume jacked up like we did it at live shows. That is how the songs 'Aftershock', 'Time Trap' and 'Venusian Sea' were recorded. We never actually made it to the stage of thinking out a cover concept because of deciding not to release the album. So I can't say what the cover art would have looked like if we had gone ahead and released it back then.” According to Mark Shelton »Dreams Of Eschaton« is based on a loose concept: “It's about dreaming of the apocalypse, both, the real possible one and the religious Christian version as well. But it is pretty loose and some songs just don't even relate to the concept at all.”“Unfortunately there has never been a really good master recording of this material that survived the years,” explains Mark. “But there was a copy of the demo that was found that sounds amazingly like the original recording sounding to me as I remember it. With this newly found tape along with Patrick Engel's new mastering the quality has improved greatly from what was released as »Mark Of The Beast« on Monster Records back in 2002.” Surprisingly, most of the songs of the shelved »Dreams Of Eschaton« album were indeed played live back in the days: “We played most of the songs live for about a year or two and then they sort of drifted off the live set list. We did play 'Avatar' in France once when the line-up was Vince Golman on bass and Cory Christner on drums with Bryan singing it. There is a youtube video of this on our Manilla Road youtube page if you care to check it out.” So what would Mark say, does he consider »Dreams Of Eschaton« to be a full Manilla Road album, which just did not make it to be officially released in 1981, or is it rather an experiment/a collection of demos in his eyes? “I would consider it to be a bit of both,” is his straight answer. “It was a full album which was originally going to be called »Dreams Of Eschaton« and with the other songs added, which were actually recorded as demo songs, then it becomes sort of that collection that you speak of as well.“
