Bio:

After years of oblivion (from 1988 to 1994), passed to write pieces without having a band, in 1995, the guitarist LGD (Luigi Guarino D.), forms the first and precarious formation of the ANGUISH FORCE, then known only as ANGUISH.The intent of LGD was to play the kind of music, with which he was growing up in the glorious '80ies and that in the ten-year period in course, he was polluting himself true distant influences away from the classic Heavy Metal. And with this, going completely countercurrent, he decided to put all his influences in the band, starting from Hard Rock, passing onto Heavy Metal, Speed and Power, arriving to Thrash.Well, a real fluttered True Metal that still puts in difficulty whoever tries to label the style of this band. It is not easy to find a stable formation, in a period in which proposing a type from Defenders was equivalent to aim itself a gun to the temple, but LGD never gave up and after a weathervane of substitutions, he began to find more stable elements. So, from 1998 in then, the first premature demos began to come out, followed by their first homonymous CD in 2003. After the first work in the studio, the band does his first leap of quality and to propose themselves more in live seats, participating also at some festivals reliefs. At the end of 2003, the band decides to change their name passing from ANGUISH to ANGUISH FORCE and so, in 2005 the second album with the title "2: City of Ice" gets released. In year 2006, the band registers the single "Defenders united“. 2007 was conditioned by a serious accident, which occurred to LGD‘s pulse, he seriously risked a premature conclusion of his career as a guitarist and that held ANGUISH FORCE motionless for a long period of time. A large attitude and a special willpower did help that the articulations of the hand began again to work properly. 2008 is the year of the concept "III: Invincible Imperivm Italicvm", this CD presents itself as the most ambitious one, which has ever been produced by this band.. After the releasing of the new album "Created 4 Self-Destruction" and to collection old unpublished songs: "RRR 1988-1997" completely rearranged and recorded, the last chapter is the EP "Cry, Gaia cry".

Album:

The sea is angry, the waters are raging and there is nowhere to run, the bottom of the ocean awaits for souls to enter its belly, the deep is hungry and out devour those who died. Not something that you would tell your kids right before bedtime, right? Maybe this is a collective of sea horror tales to join into a single music album? That is exactly what the veteran Italian band, ANGUISH FORCE, have been trying to pull in their brand new release, via their independent label of Defenders Records, “Sea Eternally Infested”. Putting their trust into the subgenres of Metal that won the 80’s al’a Heavy / Speed, and 90’s Euro Power Metal, ANGUISH FORCE delivered the message of the sea in a kind of a concept album, which till now it is hard to me to connect the dots between the songs. On the other hand, it didn’t really matter when thinking of it.Throughout my listening experiences with “Sea Eternally Infested”, I tried to turn a blind eye towards the quality of the studio production at Stable Studios, which wasn’t that prominent. I couldn’t argue that it was poor, there is a sort of a live feel to it, but then again at times it sounded somewhat crude. There is a pure 80’s direction in the sound no doubt, which I admired as a fan, yet it could have been a bit better. ANGUISH FORCE presented themselves as an 80’s inspired Metal band, and the album’s sound pattern kept their word. Some would see is a mere cliché, yet every band has the right for its own identity, even if its sounds like a million times over examples.Without a grand intro to celebrate the opening shrapnel, ANGUISH FORCE attacked right from the get go, piercing with what seemed their favorite Speed / Power Metal doctrine, reminding the late 90’s rise of European Power Metal and its strong stance. Strongly maintaining an impressive décor, “Mermaid” led me to one of the band’s best fusions between 80’s and 90’s, with an 80’s favor of course. Galloping in a classic manner that turned me back to NWOBHM, attributing British harmonic twin axes alongside simplified rhythm guitar riffing and nice soloing efforts, I found this effort quite fair. Val Shieldon’s vocals, now ex-vocalist of the band as recently announced, appeared quite solid in his singing; however, his accent was often his red flag. Although filled with reoccurring riffs, as it is hard to actually be original in this tradition when so many crossed paths with it, the instrumental tune “Tsunami”, tracking over 8 minutes, had me enticed as the band’s best effort. ANGUISH FORCE sped most of the way, modulating within the riffing from time to time; escaping boredom with a lead guitar harmony, which sometimes was swallowed in the mix, which has some interest. When turned its gaze towards mid tempo passages, it was once again a British nostalgia, 80’s IRON MAIDEN with plenty of other titles to go around. Over 8 minutes for this kind of track is just too much, I would have let go of the last several reprises of the last passage, clocking at least 2-3 minutes. The epic project of “Elise Odyssey” was quite a challenge, and I guessed that it was even for the band. With almost half of the tune on the verge of galloping explosion, the band enchanted with a silky phase, emerging violin, channeling fuzzy bass that displayed several mistakes, talk about lack of assurance. Afterwards, ANGUISH FORCE buzzed with an volatile Power / Speed, and plunged with a MAIDEN outro to burn it out. I see it as quite an ambitious effort, a bit overly stretching the idea, but notable for its melodic flavors. The band fired several other solids like “Medusa”, “Army of Poseidon” and “Megalodon”, which seemed as if Rolf Kasparek of RUNNING WILD was making a guest appearance. Generally, these were the same thing altogether, simple songwriting, just for the sake of speed and pumping out energy.I believe that these Italians had their share of experience, since it is also their sixth studio release. The band’s sense of nostalgia and keeping the old flame burning is more than recommendable. However, the band’s music in overall isn’t overwhelming, they could turn a few stones with several tracks, but surely nothing here is the ultimate champion. With Shieldon's departure from the band, I hope that the new guy will show more promise to the band’s material. I suggest on keeping a close eye of what will be up next for these sea raiders.

Album:

Our Anguish Force come back with their seventh effort in the studio, called "Chapter 7", where they offer well-balanced old school heavy / thrash metal. The album starts immediately with the title-track, an interesting instrumental full of crazy solos that gives the listener a first taste of what can be found in the rest of the album, proving to be very enjoyable. An almost punk-inspired riff introduces "Karma's Revenge", a full-blown thrash song that certainly seems to recall solutions already present in their previous discography. A certain slowness and more raw and sharp vocal lines characterize "Do not Lose the War", certainly more on the heavy front of the spectrum; convinces enough because helped by a nice solo. You return to the thrash with "The Other 11 September", perhaps also a reference to the song "11th September" present in their debut album: musically it is distinguished by a certain speed and an interlude composed of a bass part and a solo that break well an otherwise quite flat song. Even "Planned Earthquake" is overall without any particular relief, despite a very nice riff and a very respectable old school thrash. "Under the Streets" certainly stands out among the others first of all for the introduction with a nice bass part (and this instrument is predominant, audible for the whole duration of the song), but especially for a certain NWOBHM feeling that permeates it, almost Priestian inspiration. The thrash returns with "Waiting for the Call", a rather trivial song but that fits perfectly in the gender parameters. "The Punishment" transports us to the Arab world not only for the introduction but also for the initial melodic solution, before continuing with a ride to there Iron Maiden (almost recalling "Powerslave") that completely upsets the expectations. The formula, however, remains the same throughout the duration of the song. A thrash of pure thrash awaits the listener with "The Book of the Devil", before the long "So It Was". It lasts nine minutes: for the first half it is slow and sad, bearer of a certain melancholy, in the long run, however, boring; after the central part it takes speed, continuing like a heavy metal song. The conclusion of the album is entrusted to a cover, "Thunder in the Thundra": nothing to say about it except that it is a successful cover. Two small details are not to be neglected anyway: the first is that in most of the songs a certain background noise is audible that dirties the general sound, the second is that in the long run (and is a feature unfortunately also present in other chapters of the group's discography) the riffs soon become predictable or already heard. Certainly, however, even in this album there are really beautiful solos and often save songs otherwise not very smooth, and most of the refrains seem designed for splendid live performances. All in all it is therefore a good album, which will surely satisfy the fans of the group and lovers of the genre.

Album:

The story of Anguish Force is one of perseverance and passion. Constancy and passion that have led the band from Alto Adige to release eight albums in a twenty-year history, interspersed with several EPs and collections. At the helm, as steady as ever, is guitarist Luigi Guarino, alias LGD, who has always been the only true soul of a band that has suffered in the past from repeated line-up changes. The W8 of the Future is another change, with the addition of Tumbler on bass in place of Rudymental, who had been in the band for more than ten years. But in any case, 'The W8 of the Future' sees four-fifths of the same band at work as the previous 'Chapter 7'. It reproduces the same strengths and weaknesses, with the same faithfulness to the metal word that has always distinguished Anguish Force. Desmo on vocals knows how to assert himself without being a champion, he gives his best when he moves on medium tones or on cadenced rhythms, like in the square 'Kingdom Of The Hidden Planet', undoubtedly one of the strong points of the album. The enthralling 'Stay Away From The Black Hole' is also convincing, a fast-paced power metal in the wake of Iron Savior, as is the equally square 'The World Of Wisdom' with its vaguely oriental melodies. Elsewhere, there are still those uncertainties in vocal lines and choruses that have been accompanying the band for a long time 'Birth Of A New Star' is not an appropriate opener, in my opinion..If South Tyrol is a borderland, when the rhythms get faster Germanic influences come out, like in 'The Weight Of The Future' and 'The End Of An Old Star', dragging songs in the wake of Helloween, which would probably have been better enhanced by a more accurate production. Listening to 'The W8 Of The Future' the impression is once again that of a wealth of ideas and an unquestionable enthusiasm, which could however be exploited more effectively with different sound and production choices. The album is however pleasant, Anguish Forse should be tasted live.Recommended: for lovers of classic heavy metal of the German school.

Here is new and ninth album by Bolzano-based defenders ANGUISH FORCE entitled 'Novum Ordinem Vetus Emblem', which will be released in digital format on 10 March and in physical format (audio CD and pre-order for the vinyl format) on the 22nd. The album is about a powerful and ruthless masonic lodge and what revolves around it. Basically, an absolutely topical and contemporary concept.
