Bio:

Absolva is a British metal band, an inspired & modern take on the proud traditions of this genre. Formed in May 2012 by Chris Appleton & Martin McNee (both of Fury UK), together with Dan Bate (Point Blank Fury).Chris & Martin had worked together since October 2007 as part of successful metal trio Fury UK, a band which had established itself at the forefront of the UK scene. From inception to May 2012, Fury UK, signed to Rocksector Records, released 3 albums, 1 EP & 1 DVD. The band also toured UK & Europe extensively as a headline act, played Bloodstock, Hammerfest & PPM Festivals, & toured as guests with Iced Earth, Saxon, Y&T, Michael Schenker & Blaze Bayley. When Fury UK bassist Luke Appleton (brother of Chris) joined American powerhouse metallers Iced Earth, Fury UK was put on hold whilst Chris & Martin decided to form Absolva.Amid a wave of expectation a debut show was played at SOS Festival on 22nd July 2012 to a resounding welcome, closely followed by 4 shows in August with Iced Earth - Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow & Bloodstock Open Air.A debut album "Flames Of Justice" was released on 5th November along with a 16 date headline tour including a special show at London Underworld, a Manchester album launch & various other shows in the UK & Europe. The "Flames Of Justice" Tour : Part Two took place February-May 2013 & totalled 33 shows including UK & European headline shows plus Hammerfest, plus 8 European dates as special guests on the Michael Schenker Temple Of Rock & Lovedrive Reunion Tour. After a of UK & European festival shows Absolva embarked on a further European Tour entitled "Beyond Live" to mark & promote the release of a live DVD & CD of the same name, recorded at the sell-out headline show at Wizzfest, Belgium earlier in 2013.At the end of 2013 a brand new studio album was recorded. "Anthems To The Dead" is released on 5th May 2014 & includes guest performances from Doug Scarratt of Saxon & Luke Appleton of Iced Earth. A UK tour is set for May 2014, whilst European tour dates will follow.

Album:

Absolva have unleashed a “Fan Pack” containing a live cd and dvd, ( though these can be ordered separately ) recorded at the band’s sell-out headline show at Wizzfest, Belgium earlier this year. On the strength of this dvd alone, this british metal trio comprising of Chris Appleton – lead vocals & lead guitar, Martin McNee – drums, Dan Bate – backing vocals & bass seriously kick some arse on this live dvd.For those who may not have followed Absolva’s progress, they originally started out as a quartet, with Tom Akinson on 2nd lead guitar, however he left shortly after this video was shot. They have remained a trio despite advertising the vacant 2nd guitarist’s slot, and after seeing them play on the Queensryche bill in Manchester last month, they are more than capable and seem happy staying this way, only time will tell if they do recruit another guitarist. After a brief intro the title track of the band’s debut album ‘Flames Of Justice’ rips open this concert with a vengeance, with Chris really driving this song along with some massive riffage, and Dan’s pounding Bass. There’s no rest as the band power straight into ‘100 years’ before Chris takes the mic and says “Hello Wizzfest” a welcome cheer from the sell-out crowd show the band they are doing the right thing. And so they power on, playing nearly the whole of the band’s debut album “Flames Of Justice “. Two new songs are on here, ‘Killing Season’ and ‘Some Wild Universe ‘, so this is your chance to hear them first, as they will be on the new album due out early next year.Drummer Martin Mcnee had just over 3 minutes in the spotlight to show the crowd that he can drum with the best of them, and he certainly entertains, even getting a roar of approval from the crowd, not bad going for a drum solo as a lot of people see them as an excuse to go to the bar, no so here. The rest of Absolva return to a welcome roar as they finish off their set in style with two blistering performances of ‘Love To Hate’ and the final song of the night ‘Empires’The quality of the dvd is as good as to be expected, given the limited budget. Multiple camera angles capturing the on stage action, and the editing is surprisingly good, giving each band member equal time throughout each song. However what this dvd is good at, is showing the band at its raw, grittiest best, you can certainly see the passion this band have and the belief in their music.

Album:

UK's Absolva is a band formed in 2012 by members of Fury UK and has had a strange history. After releasing one full length in 2012 they released a live CD and live DVD in 2013, which is strange for any band. Lead guitarist and lead vocalist Chris Appleton is the brother of Luke Appleton who, along with being a member of Fury UK with brother Chris, is the current bass player for Iced Earth. So now Absolva has released it's second full length album, Anthems of the Dead and what you get is some melodic riff driven traditional metal. Guest appearances on this album by bassist brother Luke on a few songs as well as Saxon axeman Doug Scarratt tells you what should be expected. This band is not going to be known for creating anything groundbreaking but instead they just play heavy metal that's catchy and loaded with riffs. It seems that Chris Appleton is the star of this show being two of the best parts of this album, the vocals and the lead guitars. Vocally he sounds a bit like Jonny Lindqvist (Nocturnal Rites) with a touch of Andi Deris (Helloween), although he has much more of a range than either when he wants to and only sounds like those guys in his mid register. The solos on this album also stand out because of his sheer technical abilities as well as the fact that they are catchy and tasteful. The opener, "The Devil's Mouth" starts things off with massive traditional metal riffs and blazing melodies. Mid paced for most of the song there are some impressive speedy parts and the bridge before the solo has a great melody and a high note by Mr. Appleton worthy of Daniel Heiman. As a lead guitarist he reminds me of Criss Oliva a bit in his execution. The songs here range from the more speedy power metal types to songs that have those mid paced gallops but each song is unique in and of itself. This album does not get boring because of the variety of songs on here. The title track is one of the more speedy to mid paced songs that has riffs that are crushing and melodies that are infectious. The bridge leading to the chorus has both clean and acoustic guitars that is melodic and catchy slowing down in the middle to a beautiful passage right before the solo comes in and takes you away. This is how I like my metal...varying sounds that compliment and add dimension to the songs. "The Alter & The Cross" is an acoustic number that is only two and a half minutes long but is one of the better ballad type songs I've heard from any of the big named traditional/power metal bands of late and a nice way to bridge the first and second half of the album. The second half of the album kicks things right back into high gear with "Live for the Fight" which is an ass kicker from start to finish with some impressive riffing mixed with great melodies. This half of the album also sees the band going in a more epic territory with longer songs like "Soul Remains" clocking in at around six minutes but with enough going on to keep you interested...and headbanging! The solos are fucking godly full of melody and feeling. "Silent Sacrifice" ends the album with a combination of galloping tempos and slower acoustic passages with great melodies. This seems like the only time on the album where the band seems to be overreaching a bit. The song clocks in at just over seven minutes and there are a few spots in the middle that could have been axed to make the song a bit shorter but the solo that follows kinda makes up for it.All in all this is a balls to the wall heavy metal album. It has everything that a fan of traditional metal could want, soaring melodies, classic riffing, and monumental soloing.I'm not all that familiar with their parent band, Fury UK, but I do know that I like this band. With only two full length albums, I'm hoping there will be more from this band in the future.

Album:

There’s an art to making modern heavy metal, one that Absolva clearly understand. Their music manages to keep the traditional sound while looking forwards, it is connected to musical greats but forges its own path. We all know those bands that have somehow time warped from a pre grunge 1985 when metal had started to turn stale or the ones that sound just like a hollow version of (enter famous band here) Absolva aren’t like that, they produce their own fresh take on a tried and tested formula which means Never A Good Day To Die is an album you’ll want to buy.You can tell guitarist/lead vocalist Chris and guitarist/backing vocalist Luke are brothers through the way their playing is connected. There’s an almost single entity feel to some of the six string arrangements which must have been interesting for the producer. This makes the record tight without it sounding mechanical. The album does have a quite narrow range tempo wise, even the outwardly slower ‘How Black Is My Heart’ can’t resist picking up the pace halfway through. It’s a fine line to tread between following a customary sound and being innovative enough to set you apart. Absolva walk this tightrope with an assurance that few bands have.Often you see an act have a single big moment, that one killer song that they build a reputation on. That’s a bit like having a house of cards with the point at the bottom. Never A Good Day To Die spreads the load, it isn’t just a foundation but rather everything other than the illusive capstone that would surely elevate this fine band to the level they deserve. With so much emphasis these days on trends and gimmicks it’s refreshing to see a band happy to let their music do the talking.

Absolva : ‘Defiance’ Double CD 28th July 2017 Rocksector Records. UK Heavy /Thrash/ Power Metal band. Appleton’s brothers have once again hit the Metal world to set the world on fire. A powerful and melodic album mixed up with live songs to kick your ears. 13 songs and 8 live ones giving the fans a double album, keeping their symbol on the cover identifying the band easily, they just made a perfect album you will play and play again. I’ve been listening to it many times and some songs just stick into my mind. That album is a true Metal album cooked with love and ingredients every metalheads will bang their head to. Fueled by hit singles such as ‘Eclipse’ , ‘Life on the edge’, ‘Connections’, ‘Defiance’…I think the whole album is just made to hit the top of the charts. Heavy riffs, pounding drums, melodies in the voice, beautiful solos, those guys know how to write the tunes that will kick your butt and get you kneel to the mighty combo the brothers are bound to.Many of the songs got a Megadeth Dave Mustaine style, some have riffs from Toranaga, Nevermore, solo melodies reminding Iron Maiden, Savage Messiah and Iced Earth on the ballad song ‘connections’. You might also find influences from Whitesnake , Def Leppard ,Skid Row, Saxon… well this is a Metal band!!! That probably makes one of the best album to come in July. Sorry folks you’re gonna have to wait a little bit to get your hands on that masterpiece 100/100.

Album:

ABSOLVA hails from the UK and has been rocking all over the world since 2012. This group of rockers (including Luke Appleton from ICED EARTH) bring their a-game whether it's on stage or in the studio with classic chuggy style riffs, powerful vocals, and some massive solo sections. Their fifth studio album, “Side By Side”, officially arrives on April 17th, 2020. These guys have a nostalgia factor about them, yet keeps a fresher modern feel with their style of Melodic Heavy Metal (although I'd add that they bring a feeling of NWOBHM back around as well) “Advocate Your Fate” is an interesting opening track with IRON MAIDEN style riffs and powerful vocals. “The Sky's Your Limit” started out ballad paced. The lyrics were a bit cheesy, but the riffs were cool and the harmonizing guitars are excellent. I loved the last couple of minutes of this, the song really took off and well, sent the listener beyond the sky with some killer guitars and powerful vocals. “Side By Side” started out slow then took off midway through with yet another stellar guitar solo set. “Living a Lie” immediately had me banging my head with that cool riff and drum combination that starts the song and continues throughout. The solo section is a massive dramatic kind of solo, I loved it.“Legion” most definitely has the NWOBHM feel from the starting note throughout. The riff style in this one plus the vocal melody is reminiscent of SAXON blended with DIO. “End of Days” is a HEAVY track. The riffs were bad ass and powerful, Christopher's voice is massive in this track too. “From This World” is the final track (at least of the original songs) on the album. It starts out kind of cheesy, but with some neat melodic little riffs weaved in. It builds to a fantastic riffing and solos section midway through. The melodies in this closing track are strangely beautiful and easily get stuck in your head after the song ends. “Two Minutes to Midnight” is a cover of the IRON MAIDEN classic. It's a solid cover and the solo section steals the show. (not surprisingly with how often I felt the Maiden influence throughout this album) Overall, this album was super enjoyable! As a big IRON MAIDEN fan, I was excited to see the ABSOLVA list them as a major influence. The influence showed, in a positive way, throughout this entire record. They did have their own twist in the mix with catchy melodies and excellent vocals. I can say the guitars were the greatest part of this album for me though. I'm a sucker for dueling/harmonized guitars and the Appleton brothers are insanely talented at it. “Side By Side” was also something I often want from music: Fun. I can tell these guys are passionate for the music they're creating and having a blast doing so. It adds to the enjoyment factor of an album for me and they certainly hit the mark and surpassed it by a mile.

"Anthems To The Dead" is released on 5th May 2014 & includes guest performances from Doug Scarratt of Saxon & Luke Appleton of Iced Earth. Album:

The 6th studio album by this British melodic metal band. The band features the 4 musicians from Metal Hall of Fame artist BLAZE BAYLEY (IRON MAIDEN singer 1994-1999), including Blaze’s co-writer & co-producer CHRISTOPHER APPLETON.After their critically acclaimed album Side By Side, released back in 2020, Manchester, England-based four-piece Melodic Heavy Metal squad Absolva is back in action with an ass-kicking new album, entitled Fire In The Sky, bearing all the hallmarks of old school British metal music that vocalist and guitarist Christopher Appleton, guitarist Luke Appleton, bassist Karl Schramm and drummer Martin Mcnee are known for, plus an even greater level of intensity. Recorded at Rocksector Records, mixed and produced by Chris Appleton himself, mastered by Ade Emsley at Table of Tone Mastering Ltd., and featuring a classic artwork by Alberto Quirantes of Akirant Illustration, Fire in the Sky deals with an array of contemporary issues that impact everyone’s lives, such as alcohol and drug problems and the all too familiar effects of the global pandemic. “Absolva is usually known for the positive themes in our lyrics, yet this time we’ve been drawn toward some darker issues. The pandemic was a rough ride for most people and I personally found it difficult to take, with a mix of effects on my life. Like so many people we suffered the pain of losing a very good friend to the virus and then more generally the negative effects on our music industry as a whole were obviously really bad,” commented Chris about the band’s biggest inspirations for the new album.Demon Tormentor is pure, unfiltered Heavy Metal from the very first second, with Chris and Luke pulverizing everything and everyone with their strident riffs while Karl and Martin smash their rumbling instruments in great fashion, starting the album on an electrifying mode. Then continuing their incendiary path of classic heavy music we have Burn Inside, reminding me of the more recent creations by Blaze Bayley (for obvious reason) and with Chris once again showcasing his vocal potency accompanied by his bandmates’ epic backing vocals; and rev up your engines for a Heavy Metal feast infused with Southern Rock and Metal nuances titled Addiction, perfect for raising your fists in the air to the pounding beats by Martin and the striking solos by the band’s dynamic guitar duo. Melodious lines permeate the air in What Does God Know, a power ballad by the quartet where Chris declaims the song’s words with tons of passion, whereas Stand Your Ground is another straightforward display of their Melodic Heavy Metal, albeit not as exciting as the other songs of the album, with Chris and Luke still presenting a great job on the guitars. The title-track Fire In The Sky puts the band back on track, exhaling fire, electricity and epicness, or in other words, it’s a song perfect for hitting the road while Martin hammers his drums in great fashion, not to mention how sharp the song’s riffs sound and feel. Chris keeps delivering his trademark vocals and riffs in Man For All Seasons, supported by the always melodic and thunderous bass by Karl in an old school but at the same time modern version of heavy music, and get ready to bang your head nonstop together with the Absolva boys in Galloglaigh, a beyond pure British tune with their Judas Priest-inspired guitars adding fire to the overall sonority. Historic Year brings to our ears six minutes of epicness in the form of music, alternating between mid-tempo passages and sheer adrenaline thanks to the awesome riffage blasted by Chris and Luke. It will sound fantastic if played live, I might say, whereas Refuse To Die is a brilliant way to close the album, offering us all another round of their vibrant and melodious Heavy Metal with Chris being on absolute fire on vocals while Karl and Martin keep demolishing our souls with their undisputed kitchen. As already mentioned in our review for Side By Side, you can get in touch with Chris, Luke, Karl and Martin through their official Facebook page and their Instagram, subscribe to their YouTube channel for more of their music and stream all of their creations on Spotify, and of course purchase Fire In The Sky from their own Big Cartel page or from Apple Music. Although as mentioned by Chris the themes explored in their new album might be darker than usual, the quartet managed to turn all that obscurity and negativity into flammable, striking metal music, proving they’re much more than just another Heavy Metal band hailing from the UK, and therefore inviting us all to join them in their quest for heavy music for many years to come no matter what.

Album:

ABSOLVA hail from Manchester, UK and have been around for thirteen years, releasing six prior albums and now releasing the new effort titled ”Justice”, an album lyrically inspired by the early 90s film Tombstone. While ABSOLVA’s songwriter and guitarist Christopher Appleton also handle lead vocals, the idea for ‘Justice‘ was to bring outsider vocalists too, and half of the songs are performed by the likes of Ronnie Romero and Blaze Bayley among others.Musically ABSOLVA mis ’80s / ’90s metal with hard rock, ranging from Avantasia to Dokken and the heavier side of Nineties hard rock. It may sound like a weird combination, but works greatly giving ”Justice” a nice bounce. The opening track takes off like a shot, with the metallic ‘Freedom and Glory’. Speed mixed with dynamic tempo changes and it’s riding into battle, take no prisoners approach is fabulous, reminding me a bit of Avantasia with its boldness and dynamics.Track 2’s ‘The Thrill of the Chase’ has my favorite melody line and riff. It has an old school Ratt / L.A. Guns feel to it, with an updated production. One of the highlights is ‘Find My Identity’, featuring Ronnie Romero. Appleton is all over the fretboard, noodling in all the right ways to construct a melody that never becomes routine and kept me smiling the whole time.I love the little surprises found throughout, in particular the terrific guitar solos. ‘The City is Burning’, with its old school Dokken vibe, has a superb solo that sounds traditional, but the band suddenly stops playing at one point and lets Luke tap away with an impressive finger tapping maelstrom that made me rewind the song just to hear that solo again.‘Against the Odds of Time’ is multi-layered and throws in a not-so-subtle reference to Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song in the solo section. Ex- Iced Earth vocalist Stu Block delivers a solid performance. David Marcelis (ex- Purgatory, Lord Volture) guest on the title track, a metallic track plenty of melody and a certain Dokken meets Armored Saint feeling.Blaze Bayley leads ‘Atlas (War Between the Gods), a strong, midtempo battle cry of a track. While the guest vocalists enhance the “Justice, Appleton himself does an admirable job with half the album where he is featured as the lead. He channels an Andi Deris vibe on ‘The Streetfighters of Blackford Bridge’ so much you would be forgiven if you thought it was an unreleased Helloween track. He is far from an Andi Deris clone, he does carry similar vocal traits. With ”Justice”, Absolva have delivered a solid and engaging album that blends each of the elements of their sound; melodic metal + hard rock. A varied track list that moves confidently between hard-charging riffs, melodic choruses and introspective moments. Each guest vocalist adds something unique to the album, but that should not overshadow the vocal work of Chris Appleton, which is more than competent. With a range of energy and atmospheres, these songs showcases their technical abilities and emotional depth. A bold and assured release that reinforces Absolva’s standing in current British metal.
