Style : Epic Heavyr Metal
Country : Greece
Audio : 320 kbps + front
Size : 57 mb

Bio:

Epic Heavy Metal band from Athens, Greece, formed in 2022.Dragon Skull is a new group from Athens. The members are Ares on vocals, Chris Brintzikis and Panos Wallach on guitars, George Voudouris on bass and Theo Stamatiades on drums. Even though Dragon Skull are at the beginning, you understand for sure that their members have experience and that is not the first band to play music. They do not make mistakes of inexperience, especially in the composition of the songs.

Album:

Debut EP released in October 7, 2022.Trends may be inescapable, but they aren't always a negative, and for those who like their metal of a particularly raw and olden vintage the ongoing NWOTHM craze is nothing short of a modern godsend. As this phenomenon enters its late teens, it seems that a sizable number of late-comers to the scene has been jumping onto the bandwagon from unexpected places. Case and point, newly minted heavy metal quintet straight from Greece named Dragon Skull, which came from seemingly out of nowhere and includes two principle members of the moderately visible metalcore outfit System Decay of all bands. Though the divide that separates the stylings of the epic metal exploits of the early 80s from that of 2000s mainstream NWOAHM darlings like As I Lay Dying and All That Remains might seem a bridge too far, that is the very distance that is successfully crossed on this band's self-titled EP and debut. It should be first noted that while this outfit takes some fairly heavy lessons from the school of Manowar in how they approach recounting the twilight tales of swords and sorcery that go with a healthy diet of Robert E. Howard and Michael Moorcock, the stylistic toolbox that is employed is a bit different from the string of bands paying homage to Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol. The pace generally mirrors the sometimes slow, sometimes swift character of the aforementioned iconic bands, along with the pummeling yet dank character of the guitar tone, but the production quality is notably modern and crisp, and when accompanied by the gravely vocalizations of helmsman Aris Labos, comes across more along the lines of something one might hear out of Grave Digger or Running Wild in recent years. It's a curious mixture that one might chalk up as being part barbarian, part rogue buccaneer, but when the dust settles it's definitely one that works and makes for a reasonably distinct niche.Like a raging berserker crashing through the forward lines, this album wastes little time in laying down the old school metal law. The opening crusher "Barbarians" proves aptly named as it speeds and shuffles through pummeling riffs that adorn an anthem that rests somewhere between the archaic rawness of Frost And Fire and the gritty power of Branded And Exiled, while Labos' smoky growls land dangerously close to a youthful Rolf Kasparek. It's immediate successor "Death Dealer" also cruises at a fairly swift pace, but opts for a more melodic presentation, crossing sabers with the early 90s swashbuckling era of Running Wild, whereas the crusher of a title anthem "Dragonskull" lays on the infectious hooks something fierce. A brief respite from the auditory carnage emerges in a charming little acoustic romp by the campfire with heavy The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey vibes dubbed "Sons Of The Brave", but where this album really shows its brilliance is the mid-paced, epic 6 minute closer "Tyrant's Doom", arguably one of the most blatant nods to classic Manowar to come to light in recent years. They say a tiger never changes its stripes, but for those who've heard the handiwork of System Decay, it's all but impossible to believe that the same vocalist pulls off such an authentic mid-80s German speed metal gruff and the same guitarist could so perfectly emulate the signature riffs that have come to be associated with the clans of Scotland and Jolly Roger. Likewise, there is plenty of kudos to go around for the rest of the musicians in congress, particularly that of Panos Vlachopoulos, who's tech happy yet lyrical lead guitar work proves flashy enough for Chastain but also tasteful enough for Running Wild. The number of new acts coming to light bearing the insignia of the NWOTHM might be approaching the point of saturation, but the quality factor has yet to take a corresponding downturn, and for those who want it with a modern coat of paint, one could do considerably worse.

Even though Dragon Skull are at the beginning, you understand for sure that their members have experience and that is not the first band to play music. They do not make mistakes of inexperience, especially in the composition of the songs.

Album:

Debut full-length album. With cover art that feels like a loving tribute to the iconic Kings of Metal, and a title such as Chaos Fire Vengeance, the potential listener is strongly presupposed for what is to follow when the music starts. At least stylistically that is, because there is no way they expect the quality in which that aesthetic is delivered!Since they formed in 2022, DRAGONSKULL have wanted to play epic/heavy metal and they have long had the EP under the belt that proves it. This, however, is that aspiration brought to the next level. The album kicks off with Brethren, a track that feels as if a warrior’s battle cry has taken the form of a song. With catchy riffing and definite sing along qualities, the opening song delivers its purpose. It represents the more heavy – power side of the album well, a side also represented by song such as Dragon Riders and Skeleton Hand and, a personal favorite, Nampat. But alas, that’s not all DRAGONSKULL has to offer. Far from it in fact. Smack bang in the middle of the album War Drums, as well as its previous track, Skull – Crusher, show – off the band’s capability to put the emphasis in the “epic” part of epic heavy metal. Slower and darker than other parts of their music, the songs ooze atmosphere and otherworldliness.Put the epicness of these latter songs together with the heavy – power approach of the earlier mentioned ones, and you have the penultimate song of the album, Shield Maiden. Appropriately named after the legendary female warriors of Viking lore, it delivers on all fronts.A final special mention has to be made in regards to the closing track. As fantasy fans will recognize, Blood and Souls deals in the universe of the albino emperor of Melniboné. The song fits its theme perfectly. Its nature grand, bombastic and, unsurprisingly, epic. So let your inhibitions go for a moment, and let the music take you on a quest for Tanelorn. We should also take a moment to discuss the vocals on the album. Ares Labos’ approach results on more rugged, barbaric vocals, that definitely fit this soundscape better than an over -polished high note -heavy approach. Some props are well deserved. All in all, this is an excellent debut that delivers upon the promises of the band’s EP. It is unapologetically true to its roots, fun but at the same time serious. A great listen for the old school heavy metal fan.DRAGONSKULL – Chaos Fire Vengeance will be released by Eat Metal Records on March 7th 2025.
