Year : 2022
Style : Heavy Metal
Country : Germany
Audio : 320 kbps + all scans
Size : 145 mb

Bio:

Remember when Iron Maiden had galloping guitars galore? Remember when Iron Maiden was not doing Celtic Metal? Remember when Iron Maiden had songs shorter than 7 minutes? WarWolf certainly does. From the ashes of Wolfen rises WarWolf, a German Heavy Metal band that has dedicated themselves to bringing back the sounds of the NWOBHM in a big way. Hailing from Cologne, Germany the band has decided to ignore current musical trends and focus entirely on creating music that could easily have come from 1985. WarWolf – Necropolis has all of the fun stuff that Heavy Metal fans love about the 1980s Metal, and a lot more!

Album:

All of you NWOBHM nostalgic rockers out there, something (less wicked) your way comes. WARWOLF claim to be a veteran outfit based in Cologne. If they were so successful with their old band why did they have to change their name? Well that is none of our concern. The album at hand is "Necropolis". City of the dead it is and there's no joke there. That's probably one of the only thing they got right.Dusted riffs and tasteless guitar tones rule over this recording. Not what you expect to hear nowadays. The production sounds pretty cheap and can't help songs like "Nosferatu" that have a one of the good choruses on this record. We empathize with the bass player that is struggling to replicate the bass sound and technique of Steve Harris from IRON MAIDEN, but when they start their title track "Necropolis" and the main riff hits you as being a rip off from "Sign of the Cross", you end up having to pity for WARWOLF. You realize it's just a fan boy (if you can still call these elderly men boys) band. Nothing bad for a pub band or a performance at a small festival. That's where it stops."Clan of the Undead" is trying to bring some life into this album and "When the Hangman Cries" seems to succeed at it. Too bad the riffs sound unprofessional and the guitar leads pretty immature. The track mixing of this recording will get your ears very tired and even though the vocals have a lot of power, they sink in the swamp. For sure there will be those that still are reminiscent of this wave will find it in their hearts to embrace this album. It seems like it's in their DNA to love these stereotypes. "Witches" has the classic feel of the genre, but is followed by the closing song "The Priest", an 8 minute long song that's everything but exciting. And so the heavy metal saga ends rather poorly. Not necessarily a bad record, but "Necropolis" doesn't prove anything. I guess if you are a BLAZE BAYLEY fan, you will dig it, but it's just another heavy metal album out there. Unfortunately nothing sticks out to give it some shine. Very outdated for 2022. Something that reminds you of the heavy metal scene over 20 years ago and even back then it wasn't that appealing. Give it a spin but don't expect it to spin you!

Album:

Before 2022 still on the road as WOLFEN, the quintet makes traditional heavy metal with proper NWOBHM influences. The kind that attracts people in frocks and represents a reliable common denominator for the over-50s and under-20s of this species from the Cologne/Bonn area.Andreas "Lippi" von Lipinski, with his dryly funny announcements with a proper Kölsche-young vibe, is not outwardly expected to have such a vocal performance. There is a really nice light Bruce Dickinson vibrato as well as soft vocals, but of course also the powerful prototype metal voice. And while the vocal potential doesn't fully shine through at the beginning of the first song, it's worth sticking with it. The song is over eight minutes long and unfolds in the best MAIDEN style, with whom the band is often compared. The new record "The Apocalyptic Walz" is over an hour and twelve songs long and features old school metal in the spirit of the great Brits, including the pleasant quiet parts with clean guitars and a few twists and turns that you know from them. This is combined with some groovy midtempo and increased use of thicker backing vocals, which benefits the album considerably. Here WARWOLF also scratch GRAVE DIGGER feeling every now and then, which is not surprising considering the fact that "The Apocalyptic Waltz" was recorded and produced by DIGGER singer Chris Boltendahl. The production is actually one of the minor causes for criticism. It all sounds very decent, but is a little upper-middle-heavy. Some final frequency work would have been welcome here. And tradition in all honour, but a little more courage to innovate would have been nice. WARWOLF rely a lot on their classic basic style, which they enrich with elements of other, no less classic sub-styles like Teutonic Metal, because it's cool. But the surprises on "The Apocalyptic Waltz" are thus mostly limited to the fact how beautifully authentic they got it implemented, and less to unpredictability in the composition. Conclusion: Live, WARWOLF are quite a blast, and also on record they don't have to hide behind other classic heavy metal bands. And let's be honest: If someone reinvents the wheel, good thing. But if someone has already invented one that works excellently, then someone who can replicate it in high quality and then paint it nicely is always valuable.

Album:

Third full-length album. On the face of it, there isn’t a lot to say about the unreconstructed true metal attack of Cologne’s WarWolf; In the past they’ve been likened to Iron Maiden‘s eighties output sung through the vocal filter of Blaze Bayley, and there’s certainly an element of that on The Final Battle. However at their most Maidenesque – A New Hope basically seems to be Brave New World played faster and with one or two stylistic tweaks – the Bayleyesque nature of Andres Von Lipinski takes on a slightly less obvious hue, Indeed all of the Maiden references on TFB, to these ears at least, seem to find their roots in the post-reunion days, but that’s a debate for another day…If you strip away the more naive material – The Dark Emperor is simply too gauche for words – you find a band that often employs a deliciously skewed, unique approach to their songwriting that actually gives them something of an intriguing point of difference. The best track on the album, Fight The Invaders, strips away the Maiden wannabe pretence and, with the application of some truly impressive vocal melodies, presents itself as something altogether more interesting than simply seeing how many different galloping riffs can be shoehorned into a single song. What’s more, this style seems to suit Von Lipinski’s vocal better, leading to a feeling that here is not only his but the band’s ultimate wheelhouse. The band clearly know a thing or two about song arrangement – especially vocally – and I for one would be happy to trade a bit of metal for a bit more musicality. This is a group of musicians of clear talent – that much is obvious – and it would be nice to hear them exploring those elements of their collective musical personality that are a little less obvious a little bit more.
