Info:

SIGN OF THE JACKAL was born in the cold winter of 2007 when four friends sharing a passion for classic heavy metal and horror fi lms came together in the very North of Italy, in the town of Rovereto. Influenced by heavy metal legends of the 1980’s such as Warlock, Black Knight, Taist of Iron, Black Lace, Judas Priest and Lizzy Borden, the core of the band was formed with Bob on rhythm/lead guitar, Sergio Mate on drums, Kill on bass and lead vocalist and frontwoman Laura on vocals.SIGN OF THE JACKAL spent the bulk of their first year covering their favorite classic metal songs live, opting to avoid the hits and instead keep things interesting with a set list full of rare b-sides and obscure album tracks. Desiring a fuller, more complete live sound, rhythm guitarist Max was added to complete the line-up in April 2008. The line-up now complete, SOTJ began writing and rehearsing original music, incorporating their interest in classic horror and thriller films with the sounds of early 80’s underground European and American heavy metal to create their own unique image and sound.Propelled by the encouragement of strong fan interest that began locally and spread quickly throughout Europe, SIGN OF THE JACKAL entered the studio for the first time during the winter of 2008 to record their debut two-track demo, aptly named the “Haunted House Tapes”. A nod to the old school, the limited edition demo was limited to only 100 CDs as well as 36 cassette tapes for the true die-hards and cult heavy metal fans. With a string of dates throughout the spring and a signing with Heavy Artillery Records in May, SIGN OF THE JACKAL have begun 2009 with a bang and are poised to join the growing ranks of today’s heavy metal heroes. Fans of Warlock/Doro, early Iron Maiden, Enforcer and traditional heavy metal take note; when SIGN OF THE JACKAL come to fight for rock no prisoners will be taken!

Album:

Despite being loaded with personality and individual flavour Sign Of The Jackal from Italy have pretty much been background players in the world of Heavy Metal revivalism up til now. Maybe that is down to the restraint and decorum shown in relation to the femininity of frontwoman Laura Coller (in sharp contrast to the overtly sexed-up likes of Huntress), or their previous association with the pretty lacklustre (and now defunct) Heavy Artillery Records, or simply the fact that it has taken them 5 years to deliver this debut album. Whatever the reason may be Sign Of The Jackal are here now and sound like they are making up for lost time. After a lengthy spooky kitsch intro “Heavy Metal Possession” explodes out of the gate with Speed Metal fury. Obvious comparisons would be drawn to Warlock regardless of how Laura's voice actually sounds, and while she has clearly been taking notes on Doro's phrasing her tone is more in line with Acid's Kate de Lombaerd, those Belgians being a key musical influence too. The strong Mediterranean accenting gives a vibe similar to much-missed Portuguese heroes Midnight Priest as well, making this band one hell of a characterful ripper. If you have Heavy Metal music in your blood then you'll probably be on your feet fist-pumping by the second chorus of track 2, “Paura Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi.”Long term fans of the band will recognise over half the tracks on here as both their previous releases, The Haunted House Tapes demo and The Beyond EP are rerecorded in full (minus “Head Over Heels” from the EP). This reliance on older material may seem lazy, but despite how bombastically those older songs like the Avenger/W.A.S.P. Punch-up of “Hellhounds” have been translated, new cuts like the Warlock-tastic “Queens Of Hell” give them a run for their money. “Heavy Metal Demons” feels less powerful than the other re-recorded tracks, but the brilliance of “Night Of The Undead” makes up for it in spades. In fact, it feels like this album's high points make up for all its short-comings.One criticism from some quarters I can forsee is that the use of no less than 5 horror-themed intros to songs from a band so in tune with their pop sensibilities might ruffle the feathers of anyone who takes the occult aspect of Metal seriously. Sure the double-whammy of “Fight For Rock” and cheesy instrumental “Paganini Horror” take the album briefly into more mid-80's commercial territories (think Lita Ford and the like), and aside from the piano intro to “The Beyond” there isn't any attempt to ingratiate the horror theme any further than the lyrics and intro samples, but the overall quality and infectiousness of this album mean that this barely registers as a problem at all. The only thing it can't eliminate is the superfluousness of the Fastway cover that ends the record on a fairly average note, but Sign Of The Jackal can be let away with that for such a killer first album. Who knows, we may see a more complete and complex record from this band somewhere down the line, but for now they are doing everything they need to.

Album:

Sign Of The Jackal are a female fronted heavy metal band from Italy formed in 2008, releasing the ‘Haunted House Tapes’ demo in the same year. The five song E.P. ‘The Beyond’ was released in 2011, with the bands first full length offering, ‘Mark Of The Beast’ released in 2013. ‘Breaking The Spell’ is the Italian metallers second album and was released in 2018.Four decades after the NWOBHM evolution, Italian heavy metallers Sign Of The Jackal are living proof that the genre is very much alive and kicking, and is no longer a genre reserved just for British bands. Sign Of The Jackal are celebrating their tenth year as a band by delivering one of the best NWOBHM albums you’ll hear this year. ‘Breaking The Spell’ is a stunning thirty minute journey of “foot on the monitor” style heavy metal that will have you head banging from start to finish. As so many of the genre’s great exponents do, Sign Of The Jackal open the album with a crescendo building sub two minute spine tingling intro. ‘Reagan’ sets up an atmosphere of high expectation, expectations that are emphatically met as ‘Night Curse’ explodes into life. Storming on like a force ten gale, ‘Night Curse’ is full throttle heavy metal, infectious and head bangingly addictive. The urgency that propels ‘Night Curse’ forward is off the scale, the blistering pace a furious foray. What an opening!Keeping the pace and power at high speed, ‘Class Of 1999’ launches forward with a sparkling guitar riff, reminiscent of the ‘Triumph And Agony’ era of German power metal experts Warlock, fronted by the iconic metal queen Doro Pesch. ‘Class Of 1999′ is mesmeric for all the right reasons, with the chant style chorus “class of 1999’ a definite scream at the top of your voice moment. Amazingly, the pace is increased as ‘Mark Of The Beast’ sets off at high velocity, with a determination to break the sound barrier as it flies off faster than a bullet. The speed of the album is breathless, and with only a thirty minute run time, Sign Of The Jackal do a great job of squeezing in nine songs. ‘Heavy Rocker’, and no, it’s not a jibe at an over weight rock fan (like me), introduces a more melodic feel to the album. The classic buzz guitar sound, synonymous with the NWOBHM movement, takes front and centre as ‘Heavy Rocker’ marches on its way.Pace returns to the album in emphatic style as ‘Nightmare’ lurches forward with ferocious speed. Heads will be banging hard and fists vigorously punching the air as mosh pits everywhere go wild for what is simply a corker of an album…an album that stands tall and proud in the centre of the NWOBHM genre. A moodier and more menacing vibe takes over as the instrumental ‘Terror At The Metropol’ rumbles into life and strides majestically on. The infectious and addictive traditional heavy metal sound oozing from ‘Terror At The Metropol’ is outstanding and a stunning head nod back towards the heady days of the NWOBHM evolution during the mid eighties. Hitting the ground running, ‘Beyond The Door’ scorches into life, and is a furious rampage as it flies by. All too soon and the album is heading for its end with the final song…but what a song! ‘Headbangers’ is a thunderous call to arms for all the err, headbangers around the world. A furious romp, ‘Headbangers’ is a superb end to superb album. Time to press the replay button, see you all in another half hour…!

Album:

DYING VICTIMS PRODUCTIONS is proud to present SIGN OF THE JACKAL’s highly anticipated third album, Heavy Metal Survivors, on CD and vinyl LP formats.Since 2007, Italy’s SIGN OF THE JACKAL have been carrying the torch for traditional, female-fronted HEAVY METAL of an authentically mid ‘80s vintage. Over the past 15 years, they’ve played stages all over Europe and delivered two full-lengths – 2013’s Mark of the Beast and 2018’s DYING VICTIMS-released Breaking the Spell – along with a preceding demo and EP: not too shabby for a band who began, humbly enough, with covers of obscure underground metal songs from the ‘80s! Naturally, the electric vocals of Laura DemonsQueen are front and center, but SIGN OF THE JACKAL’s gleaming chrome pulses with pure mid-‘80s speed metal energy, all injected with a heaping helping of classic ‘70s Italian horror atmosphere. Now, a too-long six years since their last full-length, SIGN OF THE JACKAL are about to unleash their ultimate statement: Heavy Metal Survivors. The title itself is both a perfect summation of their sound and a loose thematic for the album’s post-apocalyptic atmosphere…total ‘80s-style, of course! Each song is gassed up with enough energy to roam the wasteland for days on end, but what sets SIGN OF THE JACKAL’s third album apart from its predecessors is its HOOKS; be it because the more-patient pacing or the space between notes ringing more richly, Heavy Metal Survivors’ eight vocal-led tracks retain a catchiness that’s so engaging and engrossing, it’s not impertinent to suggest that they could’ve landed on the radio circa 1986…late night, of course! And while SIGN OF THE JACKAL’s aesthetic signposts haven’t changed all that much since the last album – or the beginning, for that matter, as Warlock’s True as Steel remains a huge influence – LP#3 moves the Italians even closer to classic Dokken at their speediest as well as Tokyo Blade, Virgin Steele, Finland’s OZ, America’s Abattoir and Chastain or even W.A.S.P. at the leanest and meanest. Through it all, though, there’s that FEELING: of fun, of glory, of eternal obeisance to the electrical currents of classic metal that remain etched in stone to a specific era in a specific way, raised up and reborn with vitality and vigor. Those who know, know, and they’re among the Heavy Metal Survivors!
