Bio:

Paragon is a speed metal/power metal band from Hamburg, Germany.Paragon was founded by guitarist Martin Christian (who in many of the band's album booklets is written as Martin Wöbcke when it comes to songwriting-credits). After releasing some demo tapes and a mini-CD, they were able to release an album in 1994, the debut World of Sin. Shortly after this, their record company Blue Merle went bankrupt, and Martin decided to put the band on hiatus.About two years later, Martin found four new members (Andreas, Jan, Markus, & Claudius) and recorded the album The Final Command. In 1999, Chalice of Steel was released. In 2001, Paragon released Steelbound, engineered and produced by Piet Sielck of Iron Savior. Piet has worked with the band on every album since then. After the recording of Forgotten Prophecies in early 2007, the band's longtime bass player Jan Bünning quit the band because of "musical differences." Shortly after the band had found a replacement in Dirk Seifert. In late 2007 the band changed labels to Massacre Records and released Screenslaves in 2008.In the mid to ending months of 2009, Paragon took a break. During this time they lost two members. Guitarist Günny Kruse who had played on their three studio albums between 2005–2008, and also bassist Dirk Seifert who only played on "Screenslaves".In 2012 the album "Force Of Destruction" was released. On November 4, 2014, Paragon announced a new album will be released in late 2015 on the bands 25th anniversary.

Album:

Paragon has been nothing but consistent over their 22 year career, releasing album after album of raging Germanic power metal in the same vein as Grave Digger and Iron Savior. Though they’ve had plenty of fun moments, 2012’s Forces of Destruction took a big leap forward in terms of song writing, heaviness and staying power. Coming off their best album to date obviously puts more pressure on the band and perhaps that’s the reason for the 4 year wait for Hell Beyond Hell. And after that long wait you get even more of the same furious, quasi-thrash power with the same high testosterone quotient and unerring commitment to over the top metallic clichés. But is it up the newly high standards set by its lofty predecessor?Sadly, no. Though there’s plenty of steroid soaked cheese salad to enjoy here, it’s definitely a return to Earth for the veteran rockers. There are the usual barn burners sure to make you raise the Immortal Fist ov Steely Wengeance, but there’s some chaff as well. “Rising Forces” is the perfect opener with furious riffing and a foaming-at-the-mouth vocal performance from Andreas Babuschkin. It’s like Grave Digger and Accept on meth and Thorazine and so metal you can actually feel the welding seams. It’s the kind of song you can imagine playing as you race through a forest on a Harley pursued by ravenous demons, which obviously makes it useful to keep around. The title track is more of the same meat and taters Germometal with thick, chunky riffs powering things along as Andreas wails away like a dire wolf with a leg stuck in a steel trap (ov iron). It’s fun and saucy even though you’ve heard the same thing a million times, mostly due to the deadly serious (and therefore silly) delivery and ridiculous trveness factor. The one-two punch of “Stand Your Ground” and “Meat Train” is the album’s high point, with both cuts blasting away mindlessly, proudly oblivious to the fact it’s no longer 1987. The latter is especially charming in it’s knuckle-headed Accept-isms and unswerving desire to rock you to hell and back with a transfer at Hamburg, Germany. “Buried in Blood” is another bruiser worth mentioning with a memorable chorus approximating Grave Digger at their very best.Paragon runs into trouble when they attempt longer, more “epic” songs, like the nearly 8-minute “Heart of the Black.” It isn’t terrible, but they go too far outside their narrow comfort zone by attempting a mix of power-balladry, emotional hubba bubba and trve metal glory. It comes across like an awkward, overwrought and overlong fighting song for pre-teen LARPers, it drags a lot on the back-end and doesn’t fit the raging cheese-doodling that surrounds it. “Devil’s Waiting Room” is even longer at 9-minutes, but fares better due to its more anthemic attitude. Still, you don’t look to these guys for your epic metal and they’re much better off rocking short, sweet tracks of Teutonic terror. At 55 minutes Hell Beyond Hell feels too long in the fang and the 2 extended tracks disrupt the speedy momentum built by winners like “Meat Train.” This is definitely a band that should aim for 9-10 quick cuts of angry Germanic speed and get out at the 45 minutes mark.Andreas Babuschkin is the heart and soul of the Paragon sound and you either love his nasal rasp or you don’t. He sounds like a barbarian chieftain with bronchitis barking war commands on a cold winter day and his style always amuses and entertains me. He’s a nice departure from the Udo school of snarling and definitely gives the band a unique flavor. The backbone of the band is the heavy riffing of Martin Christian and relative newcomer Jan Bertram and they do a fine job here propelling the cheddar along the conveyor belt. They borrow much from the Accept style of dual guitar heroics and nail it dead to rights on most songs. If you enjoyed any of Paragon‘s prior platters you’ll like this one too. It gives you everything you want from this style of metal and the writing keeps the material fun and furious more often than not. After a long day, what’s better than popping open a beer, blasting this kind of lowbrow noise and lowering your I.Q. to caveman levels of drooling metalhead slobbery? Very little.

Album:

I literally held myself from taking on a PARAGON release and actually write about it. I don’t know why really? A stupid reason probably. This band has been around my wide Metal circle since their sophomore “The Final Command” album, dating back to 1998. More than twenty years later and I am anxiously tuning in to “Controlled Demolition”, newly released by Massacre Records, which recently returned the Teutonic veteran squad to its fold. I can’t really say that I was expecting anything fresh that would bite my head off clean, because when it comes to PARAGON, the last thing that I need is a new creative way to recapture my already ongoing attention. The German war machine has been one of these relics that no matter what comes through their way, whether another era of Metal music or simply a new generation of fans, they would never let go of their way of producing the mightiest for of Metal. Business wise, it might not always be a smart move, however, why be a sellout? Correct, one should not. Therefore, “Controlled Demolition”, as previously made releases is written by the book and attacking with a sharp-edged hook.Continuing the energetic path of Metal onslaught in the vein of HELLOWEEN / GAMMA RAY / IRON SAVIOR / ACCEPT, “Controlled Demolition” is a heartwarming headbanging mania of pure honesty, without playing tricks and games. It shares destructive zealous speed dominion, surging with decimating guitar riffery, brewing melody and crafty soloing, a true praise for the local Metal scene’s royal past and as icing on the cake, pure anthems for nostalgic sing-alongs to keep on in comfort. In comparison to the previous releases, there is a tougher edge to the songs, almost on the verge of Bay Area Thrash Metal elements with a few qualities that would also return the listener early Speed Metal acts, hence, you could argue that there is just a tiny bit of freshness to the mix.In addition, I got to hand it for the band’s producer, studio engineer and backing vocals specialist, Piet Sielck, also known as the mastermind behind IRON SAVIOR. His work to strengthen the band’s sound impact is notable and heavily felt. Sielck has been producing the band for some time now, and it seems that the guys keeping sticking hard to the maestro. It was quite expected but the first track that I was nailed to was the ACCEPTish kind of hit, “Mean Machine”. First time that I listened to it, I was with my 2-year-old son on my lap, and he was fondly looking at me while I headbanged myself silly. This is one of those rare perfectly timed and written melodic and heavy songs that a band should play on each set, make it part of their legacy. “Blackbell”, on its mid-tempo heaviness, such an IRON SAVIOR meets ACCEPT in its vibe, immensely strong with an iron fist. The more serious “Deathlines” epic up next, sounded to me like one of these futuristic war tales, a true mature approach, well written, a true dramatic slow tempo, mostly, anthem driven tune, bound by the truth of steel. There is not a good PARAGON album with blazing speedsters, “Musangwe (B.K.F.)”, and especially “Reborn” with its HELLOWEENish melodies, are bound to blow your mind, such ferocity at your command is a true Metal feast right there.Like I said, at least for me, to expect anything new or contemporary out of PARAGON would be a mistake, as it would never happen. I like it that way, they stick to their guns and they do it amazingly well. Praise the heroes of Heavy Metal.

Album:

This album was one of the most difficult albums to make, according to PARAGON'S bassist Jan Bünning, as the band almost broke up in the time between the release of the band's previous album "Controlled Demolition" and the present day.Jan Bünning and Martin Christian started working on new song ideas in the winter of 2019 and then the pandemic rocked the world and brought the majority of band activities - ranging from live gigs to rehearsals - to a halt. But still, both continued writing new songs and in the end of a long process, nine songs were ready to be recorded for "Metalation" and the first vocal demos were recorded last year. For this album, PARAGON decided to record the guitars, bass and drums on their own.Whereas "Controlled Demolition" was a very hard and fast album, PARAGON thought that it would not make sense to repeat this pattern once again and instead decided for the new album that it must sound a little more melodic and versatile, just like in their old days.Due to the tensions connected with the pandemic and the lockdowns, Günny left the band in the late summer of 2022 and so did his replacement as well as Sören, who left the band for personal reasons. The remaining band members toyed with the idea to release one final album and to play some farewell shows with Martin on guitar and his son Jason Wöbcke on drums, and then to disband PARAGON.Sometime after Easter 2023, though, Jason joined PARAGON permanently on drums and Martin decided to stay as well. The band's chemistry is better than ever, so it’s no surprise that everyone is very satisfied with how the new album turned out and PARAGON simply can't wait for everyone to listen to the new album and they are eager to hit the stages again!
