Bio:
Named after the largest star in the Orion constellation - 35 times the size of our Sun - the band RYGEL lives up to the weight of its name. The band was formed in 2000 in the city of Santos, São Paulo, and is now in its 23rd year with members Wanderson Barreto (vocals/guitar), Matheus Manhães (bass/clean vocals), Pedro Colangelo (drums) and Tiago Cesana (guitar) expanding the band's legacy, which currently boasts a rich discography with 4 albums, 1 EP and 6 singles released in all these years.Behind all the line-ups that RYGEL has had, Wanderson Barreto is the common factor that has been present in all of them, accompanying the band from its inception to the present day. It was with him that the band released its first EP "A Long Way To..." in 2004, produced by Wanderson and producer Rodrigo Alves at RA Studios in Santos. Even with only 6 tracks, the EP was responsible for a notorious repercussion in the specialised media, already foreshadowing the band's potential. In 2009, the band's first full-length was released: "Realities... Life As It Is". The album features 11 songs - with highlights being "Slave Of Time" and "When I Am Blind" - and once again has producer Rodrigo Alves assisting with the production along with Wanderson. This work definitely put the band's name on the Brazilian metal circuit, so that, even on their debut album, RYGEL already appeared at the Araraquara Rock festivals in 2010 - with an audience of 6,000 people - and Beholder Fest in 2011 - with an audience of 10,000 people.Inspired by the enigmatic atmosphere that the cabalistic year 2012 brought - the supposed end of the world - RYGEL released the album "Imminent", which was recorded at Mr Som Studio in São Paulo by Marcello Pompeu and Heros Trench. Although it follows the style of its predecessor, "Imminent" surprises with its flirtations with a more aggressive sound, very well represented by the opening track, "End Of Days". In addition, the album was marked by being the band's first to be released under both a national and an international label. However, after the release of their second album, RYGEL found themselves at a time when it was necessary to reinvent and renew themselves due to the major line-up change the band had to go through. It was at this point that drummer Pedro Colangelo joined the band and Wanderson - who until then had only been a guitarist - decided to also take over the band's vocals for their new work. The first work after this transition was in 2014, when RYGEL took part in the official Brazilian tribute to the band Helloween with their version of "Before The War", which attracted attention mainly because it was one of the only songs in the tribute in which original arrangements were created. The following year, RYGEL and the other Brazilian bands that featured in the tribute were eternalised in Helloween's own official biography with a big mention of this collection. In 2015, the band's third album, "Revolution", was released, recorded at Lamparina Studio in São Paulo by Tiago Hóspede. Revolution" was definitely a milestone in the band's history because of the clear evolution in RYGEL's sound and how well the band handled the need to reinvent itself. While retaining the band's roots, the characterisation of the sound was marked by a unique blend of the legacy of traditional metal with the boldness of modern metal, expressed above all by "Arisen". The official release of "Revolution" took place at a joint concert with Cavalera Conspiracy in Santos, and the album was very well received by specialised critics. In 2018, bassist Matheus Manhães joined RYGEL with the release of the disc "Darkened". Recorded at Dharma Studios by Rodrigo Oliveira, "Darkened" can be seen as the consolidation of RYGEL's new sound that was being built on "Revolution": slow, heavy and current. The album was not only highlighted in the specialised media, but also in the mainstream media itself due to the prominence that the music video for the title track was getting. The tour to promote "Darkened" was notable for RYGEL's participation in the so-called "Warriors Tour", accompanying Korzus, Armored Dawn and Noturnall on a tour of south-eastern Brazil.RYGEL's most recent phase includes the release of the singles "Nothing More", "The Ungrateful One", "Wasting Time", "A Blessing in Disguise", "The Struggle" and "Living With My Fears". These five tracks - also recorded at Dharma Studios - which began to be released in October 2020, definitely show an extremely mature RYGEL, aligned with the latest in the world metal scene, but without ever abandoning the essence that has consecrated the band since its beginnings.
Album:
Five full-length album.Lead singer Wanderson Barreto was recently hard at work in São Paulo’s Dharma Studios alongside legendary Korzus drummer finishing up all of the recordings for Rygel’s awaited debut, Chronicles, which was released this last friday (31).The album brings together remarkable moments in the band’s trajectory, including the challenging period of the pandemic. As Wanderson explains, the album portrays different phases of the band: “After releasing several singles, we decided to compile them into an album. The name Chronicles was chosen precisely to represent this passage through different periods of our history. When recording ‘Nothing More’, all the way back in 2020, I remember leaving the studio and, days later, on my birthday, I was in the hospital with Covid. So, the album records different phases of the band, from the pandemic up to today,” he concludes. In this album, the four-piece ventures into new ways of making music, with new tones, demonstrating the natural maturity of the group that drives them to explore new horizons. Two tracks on this album are in A tuning, a tone and a half lower than what they used to use. This album can be considered a transitional album, presenting a more modern sound.
