And in their damnation, these two lost souls of the music industry have merged into a glowing and unstoppable unit. For their first studio work “Heavenly Creatures“, Axel Winkler (IHRESGLEICHEN) was hired for the drums and Axel Mackenrott (MASTERPLAN) handled the keys and with Ali Gözübüyük (BIONIC ANGELS) as the fighter on bass and Aki Reissmann (PUMP) who swings the axe of rhythm, the army of darkness was complete and is now ready to be unleashed to the world of Metal! Twelve (ten on the vinyl version) incredibly multi-layered, gorgeous and over long stretches of merciless toughness tracks were wrote by the duo within a very short time, which appears like a symbiosis of the energy of bands like IRON MAIDEN, the gloom of BLACK SABBATH and the playfulness of HELLOWEEN.

Germany is a pillar of the heavy metal world and the Teutonic lands have nurtured and engineered some of the best metal bands of the last 40 years. It is no surprise that Germany once more returns from the forge of heavy metal with their latest export Black & Damned and their debut album ‘Heavenly Creatures’.Black & Damned are the brainchild of former Pump bassist Michael Vetter and Your Same vocalist Bobbes Seidel and with ‘Heavenly Creatures’, the band have set their stall out in that classic Teutonic sound; one that takes in elements of power metal and heavy metal, blending them together to deliver something that is always enjoyable. Fleshed out by current and former members of Pump and Your Name as tracks such as ‘The Wardress’, ‘The 13th Sign’ and ‘We Are Warriors’ are quite entertaining with the melodic touches of Grave Digger, Primal Fear and Masterplan whilst Seidel gives his best Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie Atkins impression. However, there isn’t anything new here, yes it’s enjoyable, but much of this album does fade into being rather unmemorable with ‘Heavenly Creatures’ being given a boost through the dynamic production by Achim Köhler.There isn’t anything unique here, but quite possibly, ‘Heavenly Creatures’ doesn’t need it; there are some strong riffs and although it may lack that killer instinct, it is a solid album of no frills and gimmicks heavy metal.

BLACK & DAMNED is a Power Metal band from Germany formed in 2020.With their existence starting about the same time a global pandemic shut down the touring portion of the music industry, apparently had time to really work on putting out studio music that hopefully is getting on the road now that everything is opening back up. Servants Of The Devil is their sophomore effort and will release on Rock Of Angels Records on April 28, 2023. The album opens with a tasty riff on the track, “Hyena’s Call.” One thing that is consistent with this band is that they have seriously catchy hooks and melodic anthems. Their rhythms are heavy and full of great tones and excellent tempos. Clean vocals round out their sound. They occasionally get a bit gritty, and do layer in some harsh vocals just to complete the sound.“Dreamhunter” has one of the heavier riffs on the album and a lot of really nice fills and frills throughout. There are more distorted vocals on this track than the earlier tracks, but the tone/tuning of the song calls for it, so that is definitely the right call. So is the belted vocalization at the beginning. It is that attention to detail that makes BLACK & DAMNED so good. The intro to “The Quantum You” is eerie. The tone of the song is dark and haunted. The spoken word at the start talks about possible alien races being here studying us and the whole song has the vibe, alien, extra-terrestrial. The music fits the lyrics, working together in harmony to create not just a sound, but a mood.To make sure they have created a proper Power Metal album, they have the requisite power ballad, “Inside.” The tones are lighter, the rhythm is more upbeat, and the guitars have some very uplifting sections. The use of backing vocals around the chorus create a wall of sound that crashes over you like a wave, then recedes as the song fades out. The composition is quite stunning on this song. “Hail To The Gods” is the epic Power Metal track. The song builds through the first 30 seconds, growing rapidly to become a guitar-driven track. The rhythm is bombastic, laying a foundation for the guitars and vocals that can hold up under the massive weight of the lyrics. Tons of grit, great low end notes, and a couple of really good belted phrases make this song really freaking rock.The album closes with the title track, “Servants Of The Devil.” Pained screams and clanging bells let you know this song is not about to make you feel good. The riff is dark, feeling almost evil. The voice matches this, especially with the almost harsh voice under the lead. The drumming is slower in some areas and the bass is damn near doom-laden in tone. The track is outstanding and would be a great lead off to a live show.BLACK & DAMNED is definitely one of my favorite things to happen during the pandemic. Their first album was called Heavenly Creatures, so had a different spin on things. Both albums are really well done. These are veteran musicians and it shows. Both their debut and this one are solid albums, well-written, well produced. This band is one of my favorite finds in three years of writing reviews and I hope this is just the beginning for them!

It all began in 2020 and the virus that paralyzed everything. The musicians Michael Vetter (guitar & bass, ex-Pump) and Roland Seidel (vocals, ex-Wasteland), condemned to do nothing, decided to become active together during the bleak phase of the worldwide lockdown. Two “lost souls” suddenly merged into a fervent unit with the aim of breaking through the silence and lethargy and creating a series of first-class metal songs. In a very short time, twelve epic heavy metal songs were created, which seem to be a symbiosis of the energy of bands like Iron Maiden, the darkness of Black Sabbath and the playfulness of Helloween. Soon there could be no other goal than to immortalize these songs on a CD and present them to the public.Drummer Axel Winkler (ex-Subway), Axel Mackenrott (Masterplan) on keyboards and Tommy Laasch (Chinchilla) for backing vocals were engaged for the studio work. To ensure that the album is guaranteed to blow the potential listener's ears off, the album was mixed and mastered by Achim Köhler (Primal Fear, Brainstorm, among others), who gave the songs an absolutely unique, epic and modern sound. With “Rock Of Angels Records”, the perfect partner for a great and intensive collaboration was found after just a few weeks, while the line-up was completed by Aki Reißmann (guitar, ex-Pump) and finally by Pappe Lee (bass, Licence).“Heavenly Creatures” was released in January 2021 and is a multi-layered, melodic yet heavy album with a dark mood. Once again produced by Achim Köhler, “Servants Of The Devil” came out two years later, perfecting the style and once again offering a great musical spectrum. From doomy, powerful, profound power metal to mercilessly blasting and pumping metal anthems. Without exception, all tracks captivate with that certain something that can only be found in BLACK & DAMNED, as well as their flair for timeless hooklines. Backing vocals were provided by Bastian Rose (Vanish) and Sven Vöhri (Dust & Bones) as well as Daniel Galmarini (Mercury Falling) as guest keyboardist.In the four years since, BLACK & DAMNED have made a first-class name for themselves, sharing the stage with Vicious Rumors, Rage and Tankard, among others, and earning great reviews in the local magazines. “Black & Damned manage the balancing act between heaven and hell with flying colors”, attests Metal Hammer, while Breakout indulges: ”best stuff for all power metallers with heart.”It is now clear that the band from the Stuttgart area can be described as a real enrichment of the heavy metal world and so they took no prisoners, used the energy of past live shows and composed ten new neckbreakers, which they recorded in the fall of 2024 under the aegis of ex-Primal Fear guitarist Stefan Leibing. These include the hard-hitting “Ruthless Wrath”, the sluggish earworm “Red Heavens” and the opening uptempo anthem “Silence Breaker”, which lives up to its name. Once again, this gripping melancholy hovers over the entire work, which is incredibly captivating and addictive. BLACK & DAMNED have grown together as a unit and “Resurrection” is a consistently hot iron, forged by five thoroughbred metallers, which will be released worldwide on March 14 via ROAR.
