Hard Rock
Bio:
Doctor Pheabes’ origins date back to 1986, when four childhood friends decided to join what they had learned before in music schools. The shared dream of forming a band became reality as “Tinta Fresca” (“Fresh Ink” in English). While rehearsing, some ideas for writing their own songs came up. However, there are no records of those early days.
Years later, a new name seemed to be necessary in order to make the band sound more professional. After several suggestions, one in particular appealed to them: “Scargot”. As soon as the change had been made, Fernando Parrillo (lead guitar), Eduardo Parrillo (vocals/ guitar), Fabio Ressio (bass) and Paulo Rogério Ressio (drums) entered a studio for the first time, and in 1992 their first album was released by the Brazilian label JWC. A year later, they got to play on the very famous TV show, “Domingão do Faustão”. In spite of the many goals accomplished, they decided to give the whole thing a break. One of the main reasons was the market’s lack of interest in pop / hard rock, once it was clearly drawn to country music and pagode at that time.
With Scargot’s break, Eduardo decided to go to medical school, Fernando studied business administration, and Paulo and Fabio, dentistry. Even with so many things going on and they being busier than ever, they have never lost touch, for they had another common passion: soccer. So it was just a matter of time before they realized that getting the band back together was more than a wish; it was a way to express feelings. Then the band returned for a short period, but now under the name Pig Head.
This getting back together generated at least four great songs which happened to be the starting point for the band’s reformulation in mid-2011. Grounded in the 60’s and 70’s classic rock bands and artists such as Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Van Halen and Peter Frampton, in particular, the band is back, now with a new name: Doctor Pheabes. The name was inspired by the TV films series starred by late Vincent Price. “We used to get together and watch ‘The Abominable Dr. Phibes’, and we were thrilled by the mix of horror scenario and black humor”, says Fernando Parrillo, who also mentions that ‘Dr. Phibes rises again’ is another favorite. “The crazy screenplays created and directed by Robert Fuest along with Mr. Price’s performance had everything to do with our proposal of mixing classic rock and metal such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, and other younger names we enjoyed a lot, like Black Crowes and Red Hot Chilli Peppers”, adds Fabio Ressio.
With a concept in mind and bubbling over with ideas, the two pairs of brothers finally returned to a studio after so many years. Starting in February 2012, the recording sessions went on for 8 months at Midas Studio in the capital city of São Paulo. The result was the release of the album called “Seventy Dogs” which was produced by renowned Renato Patriarca, winner of the 2009 Latin Grammy Award for “Best Brazilian Rock Album” due to Titãs’ album called Sacos Plásticos ( “Plastic Bags” in English). Amongst Renato’s works are artists such as Nx Zero, Negra Li, VOWE, Manu Gavassi, Lipous and many others.
The songs “Let me down”, “Hey Mamma”, “Where do you come from” and “Suzy”, first recorded when the band was still under the name Pig Head, have been given a new approach with harmonic solutions in addition to more elaborate guitar solos and arrangements. To complete the track list for “Seventy Dogs”, which has been released independently, Eduardo, Fernando, Fabio and Paulo have written six new songs of pure classic rock: “Godzilla”, “Sound”, “Running to the Edge”, “Lost Girl”, “Just Want to Live Forever”, and the title track. In May, 2013, Doctor Pheabes joined Capital Inicial, one of the most prestigious Brazilian rock bands, in a very special concert , but had already been on stage with other famous artists such as Marcelo Nova (former Camisa de Vênus), Kid Vinil, Kiko Zambianchi, among others.
