Album:
It's about two years ago when I stated here that there are a bit too many cover albums. It started with Metallica and Guns n' Roses, and then the bag was torn. Along came Vince Neil, L.A. Guns (twice even), Faster Pussycat, BulletBoys and God knows who else. It kind of bothers me. There are a few exceptions, though. One of them is Sin City Sinners. And the reason? These guys have never played a regular band. They've always had an unbelievable amount of star guests around them, they've constantly claimed they were just playing for fun, and it's started to pay off because their home (sure, sure, kitsch town) of Las Vegas is always packed no matter where they play. The situation around this, um... band has always been a bit confusing. Maybe back when they released their debut and only original CD, "Exile On Fremont St." it was clear that the band consisted of singer Todd Kerns (currently bassist and backing vocalist for Slash), former Faster Pussycat guitarist Brent Muscat, bassist Mike Ellis and drummer Rob Cournoyer. As it turns out, this core lineup also adds the star of Beverly Hills 90210 and Heights, guitarist and bassist Zachary Thorne. It doesn't really matter, although the soul of the project seems to be Muscat, because no matter what you listen to from Sin City Sinners, you'll always hear a bunch of guests. They are mainly recruited from the Los Angeles hair metal scene of the eighties (of course), but there are also guests from much harder rock, like Chuck Billy (Testament), Vinnie Paul (ex-Pantera) or Russ Parrish (ex-Fight).There's also a plethora of guests on the second full-length "Divebar Days Revisited", which is essentially a collection of thirteen cover versions (and one instrumental outro). And that makes it interesting compared to other bands' cover albums. The song selection isn't that surprising. The vast majority are classics from the sixties and seventies, but played to the strictest standards of today. That's why the opening classic "Kick Out The Jams", performed by former Guns n' Roses guitarist Gilby Clark, sounds exceptionally good. The Stooges' second track "Search And Destroy", co-written by the likes of former Dead Boys cult member Cheetah Chrome, already has the literal power of napalm, and I wouldn't be far from the truth that this is the best cover version of this song I've ever heard. We could go on and on like this.Definitely a huge hit on the Las Vegas stages will be the "Angel 13" thing (if you kill me I have absolutely no idea who it's by, I couldn't track it down anywhere) by Zachary Thorne and the following cover version by Dramarama (a track from an episode of Nightmare on Elm Street), "Anything Anything" by bassist Mike Ellis. Also well done is Mott The Hopple's "All The Way From Memphis", where Guns n' Roses keyboardist Dizzy Reed literally excels, and the AC/DC classic "Sin City", which is superbly delivered by Faster Pussycat frontman Taime Downe (at times you feel like Bon Scott has risen from the grave). While there were some tracks where you'd prefer the original, this is certainly no disappointment. It's just clear that Robert Mason (Warrant, ex-Lynch Mob) doesn't have as much madness in his voice as Ozzy Osbourne, yet "NIB", which he cut with ex-W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes, is no slouch. Neither did Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down" performed by Ron Keel or "Moonage Daydream" (otherwise David Bowie, of course), which features guest appearances by George Lynch (ex-Dokken) and L.A. Guns singer Phil Lewis. They're good adaptations, but unfortunately they're among the worst you'll find on the record. As I've mentioned before, I inherently have a sort of distaste for cover albums. They come at a time when the band has almost nothing to say and wants to milk a few more pennies. But I trust Sin City Sinners. Even if some may argue that they are former stars of the eighties, they are definitely not stale and the energy oozes from them for miles.
