Truly, some bands do not follow an easy path, and the MINOTAURUS formation from the Bavarian Untermain certainly belongs to this category.After "The First Labyrinth" had crossed the "The First Labyrinth" with three songs in 1997, only a year later the "Dragonbone Throne" was hit with four other business cards."Path Of Burning Torches" came out in the year 2000 the long-sighted first longplayer, 2001 followed with "Carnyx", a tribute to the ice-age instrument of the Celts, the next release.After two kinking folkmetal albums, a year later they were consciously more moderate ways and brought out an EP with acoustic pieces with "The Silent Cave". The songs show the soft side of MINOTAURUS for the first time, singing the romantic facet of the music of the Middle Ages, which is often presented on lutes.On "Myth Or Reality" (2004), traditional paths were again taken, but the wistful folk character was from then on an elementary component of many compositions, "Myth" most impressively in the powerballade "Warriorhearts", the soundtrack to the film "Kriegerherzen" hear."The Lonely Dwarf" from 2009 is a concept album that tells the story of a lonely dwarf - somewhere between folk and metal. With this album, the band discovered their taste for elaborate video clips, which should become an integral part of the MINOTAURUS catalog.After several changes of the band, the band is breaking new ground on their eighth silver album "The Call" (2013): the songs MINOTAURUS is beginning to sound, harder, more modern and more elaborate. But the Aschaffenburger never lose sight of their musical roots. In their 20-year existence, they have always retained their musical autonomy and will continue to do so in the future.

With their timeline stretching back to 1997, and now 8 releases under their belt, our Celtic brothers have stood the test of time in the ugly realm known as the Music Business. It is a harsh mistress, but lo, Peter Scheu and his fellow mates have persevered and ridden out the storms, with good reason. "The Call" is their latest release, combining some interesting aspects of metal, Celtic, and Folk themes to bring forth a rugged, almost rustic sounding album. This proved to be an interesting journey for yours truly.I am quite fond of the Pagan / Folk / Viking bands, and relish the opportunity to review such music, with this being no exception. As a whole, I found "The Call" to have some bright moments of metal mixed with a few not so shining moments. The vocals are very traditional, with a few songs such as "Princess Of Destruction" having a few screams to rile the listener. The backing vocals weren’t always on the mark, and at times, a wee bit painful, especially on "Varus Battle". The guitar work is pretty good, driving and free spirited, with at times, a Power Metal feel to it such as on "Love Song". "Chains Of Captivity" has some great solos on it. The keyboards are almost non-existent, which is unfortunate since they can lend so much to a song. Drum work is good but standard, which the same for the bass. Not bad by any means, but throughout most of the songs they are just, there. The production quality isn’t the best with the album sounding very bottom heavy. Again, not bad but not stellar either. For a rating, I would say a 6 out of 10. Until next time, stay well, and live free!
