Bio:
Streets was an American hard rock band made up of singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarist Mike Slamer, bassist Billy Greer, and drummer Tim Gehrt. They formed in 1982 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.Steve Walsh had been in the band Kansas and Mike Slamer has been in several other bands, including Britain's City Boy.[1] He was also a session guitarist. Greer and Gehrt were regional players who had seen success with bands in Tennessee and Atlanta, respectively. Gehrt was working with ex-Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes when Walsh recruited him for Walsh's first solo effort, Schemer-Dreamer. Walsh had noticed him when one of Gehrt's earlier bands had opened for Kansas. The two became friends and eventually spoke of forming a band together. Slamer had never met Walsh until he showed up for the audition. "I decided that I wanted to move to America," says Slamer. "The kind of music that I wanted to make wasn't being played at all in England, so I came here."Streets made its debut performance at Charlie Daniels' annual Volunteer Jam in January, 1983. The band played on another band's equipment and only played four songs. The debut LP was released later that year on Atlantic Records."We got out there and proved that we could play," said Walsh. "We go out there and we did damn good. We proved to ourselves that we could pull it off and that we were on the right track. Starting over was very humbling. But we got a lot of good feedback to the album. We live every night and being onstage (was) very renewing for us..."."I wanted to form a democratic band," said Walsh. "I did not want to be a solo singer with a band of sidemen. I like being in a band... I couldn't have done (that project) alone. I needed the help of every musician involved. We were all of equal importance in the creation of the final song."The band later recorded its second album, Crimes in Mind, in 1985. Soon after, Streets disbanded.[1] A year later, Walsh rejoined Kansas.
Album:
1st is the debut album by American rock band Streets, released in 1983. The lead single "If Love Should Go" peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart (then named "Top Rock Tracks") in January 1984.The stupendous debut album by STREETS, the band featuring the awesome Steve Walsh (Kansas) and guitar master Mike Slamer (Steelhouse Lane, Seventh Key) has received a brilliant remaster treatment by Rock Candy.Streets were formed in 1983 by Steve Walsh after his departure from Kansas, who decided to take more control of his musical destiny and was joined by bassist Billy Greer and drummer Tim Gehrt. The final piece of the puzzle was completed by super talented Mike Slamer, a British born former member of City Boy who had relocated to the US in order to seek out new musical opportunities. The combination of Walsh’s symphonic background mixed with Slamer’s melodic rock sensibilities makes for an engaging combination with Streets, proved on their debut “1st“. Combined with Neil Kernon’s production and engineering talent, the album is a rich and full event. This nine tracker comes bounding in with that typical sound that made the ’80s American Melodic Rock scene so relevant. The opening pair of tracks are awesome. “If Love Should Go” is brimming with melody, harmony and that summer-dazed carefree dreamy approach, and it doesn’t stop there as the punchy “Move On” is truly moving indeed.“One Way Street” is a cracking rocker with a sharp riff and a punctuated keyboard line, followed by the mid-tempo elegance of the radio friendly AOR in “Lonely Woman’s Cry”.“Everything Is Changing” is another great song with a lovable refrain and chorus, the guitar driven “Cold Hearted Woman” delivers a terrific AOR atmosphere, while “So Far Away” continues in the same vein yet more uptempo and crunchy.Album closer “Fire” is an aptly titled hot, melting rocker mixed with some very clever near progressive keyboard parts from Walsh and a killer guitar work.If you never heard about Streets, you need to check this “1st” (and the next one ‘Crimes In Mind’) immediately. These albums are first class examples of quality Melodic (hard) Rock displaying all the bells and whistles you could possibly wish for.Particularly on this debut, there’s also a refreshing progressive influence, mainly due to the extraordinary musical talent involved and, of course, Steve Walsh’s phenomenal vocal agility. The sound obtained on this Rock Candy remaster is incredible, believe me.
