Bio:

Stahlmann is a German band that formed in 2008 in Göttingen, Germany. It is in the genre of Neue Deutsche Härte.Martin Soer, the vocalist of the band, met Alexander Scharfe, the guitarist, and both soon realized that they like the same kind of music, Neue Deutsche Härte. Later that year, they started the band, Stahlmann, and started writing their own songs. They soon met Tobias Berkefeld, who also owned a guitar. After having the members in the band, they decide to do a live performance. For concerts, they invite a third guitarist and drummer. At this time, the group had no name. The idea arose while eating at a barbecue. "Actually, we were sitting in front of Alex and barbecuing and I was just thinking, 'OK, the name should somehow represent us,' and then it came by itself." says lead singer, Martin. Thus the concept for their band was formed. Before concerts, all three members would paint themselves silver paint, wear black suits, and use heavy lighting. In 2009, their debut EP, Herzschlag, got to the top twenty in German alternative charts and settled there for four weeks. Thanks to this, another group noticed them and invited them to tour with bands such as Doro, In Extremo, and Saltatio Mortis. They also worked in Göttingen in concerts, opening for Eisbrecher, and that is where they found their audience. In 2010, Stahlmann went on tour. This tour was organized by the magazine, Zillo. In a state of euphoria from the above events, the group started working on their debut album, which was produced in the style of Industrial Metal. Later that year, the drummer O-Lee (ex-Die Schröders) and bassist Dirk Fire-Abend (ex-Engelhai) joined. On September 3, 2010, they released their first single, Hass Mich ... Lieb Mich. On September 17, 2010, Stahlmann released their first full-length album, which was called Stahlmann. There were electronic styled parts, hard riffs, and Martin's explosive voice. This album, solely, is what brought attention to themselves.Being a young group, Stahlmann performed successfully in Germany with confidence and won new fans. For personal reasons, Alex left the band, but he still occasionally performs with the group in concert. In late 2011, the group added a new bassist, Ablation (AblaZ). Also performing in live performances were guitarists Sid Armageddon (Sid Armageddon), Mueller Mathis (Mathis Müller), Nicklas Kaalam (Niklas Kahl), and Dimitrios Gatsios (Dimitrios Tacki Gatsios).Despite their busy concert schedule, Stahlmann in 2011 removed the two singles, Tanzmaschine and Stalwittchen. hese were both pre-prepared material for the album Quecksilber, which was released on January 20, 2012 release via AFM Records. "We had eight weeks to master the sound we wanted in one of the best studios of the country. We could try to accurately convey our vision of the album," recalls Martin after recording in March."The second album is more melodic, with a large presence of electronic sounds and is not original," says some critics. But that did not get them down. Martin states here, "We associate ourselves with such music. We do not care what people think about our music. We do not want to change just because someone thinks that we're like Rammstein and Megaherz."In early 2012, they released a single, "Spring Nicht".In mid-2012, it was announced that the band was in the studio, recording for a new album. The new album with the title "Adamant" will be released April 19, 2013. The first single taken from the upcoming album is "Süchtig" and was released March 1, 2013 and on April 5, 2013 they released the second single "Schwarz".In fall 2013, Stahlmann toured with Vlad In Tears performing 5 shows throughout Germany.

Album:

Since starting Skullbanger a few years ago I have been exposed to more bands than I can ever hope to cover. At first I told myself I would try to cover so many bands per label/PR group per week or month…that notion was quickly destroyed as I not only got promos from the labels I was signed up with but also from bands or labels finding me on their own and sending me things. So I was quickly overwhelmed and finally came to the conclusion, I will cover bands as I can and well…whatever band might be lucky enough to catch my eye.Well guess what. It is Stahlmann’s lucky day! I got this little gem from AFM records and when I saw the band’s Mad Max inspired ‘Plasma’ video, I thought, ‘Hey that isn’t too bad.’ So I clicked my promo link and downloaded the ‘CO2’ album for a listen.First a brief overview of the type of band/sound we are dealing here with here. Stahlmann is, at their core, an industrial metal band. Think of something along the lines of Ministry or Rammstein or even some Rob Zombie. Now, I am not an expert in this genre of metal so I will not be familiar with some of this genre’s more nuanced areas. But I can give a fair assessment of what I heard here. At first listen I will admit I wasn’t blown away. The ‘Plasma’ song is a great tune and I see why that was selected as the single for the album but the other tunes at first listen mostly didn’t grab me. However upon listening to the album a few more times I was really impressed with what I heard on the album. I can’t speak German so I really don’t know what the subject matter of the songs are but many of the songs have a great groove and hard rhythmic beat to them like most industrial bands will have to get the listener hooked on the songs. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by a few of the ending tracks on the album, ‘Der Letzte Tag’ and ‘Nimm Meine Hann’. I was also very impressed with, I guess it is a ballad called, ‘Spiegelbild’ which was a nice change of pace for the album. So while at first I was ready to dismiss this album as nothing special I was glad I stuck with it and gave it a good listen or two because it really grew on me and though I am not a huge industrial metal fan I really enjoyed ‘CO2’ and if you are a fan of industrial metal I think you should do yourself a favor and pick up this album and if you are a metal fan in general and are open to other genres then this Stahlmann is nice little surprise that you would be happy to give a listen to.

Album:

Generic, if somewhat engaging, electrogoth from Germany.Flicking through the Sentinel Daily listing of new albums coming out I came across the new album from Stahlmann – Bastard. It immediately piqued my interest, what with the band being very similar in sound and style to Rammstein, which happens to be a guilty pleasure of mine.Bastard has a typical industrial metal sound; driving beat, heavily distorted guitars putting out crunching riffs and keyboards adding the melody, all the while being sung in German. The German language really fits beautifully with this genre of metal. However it can be a hard act to make it sound different to what has gone before. The opening track Leitwolf is your typical techno metal track; up tempo beats before breaking in to some heavily distorted riffs and a cool little bass lick. I find my head nodding and toes tapping right from the outset. This is followed quickly by Judas which is a top notch track, starting off with a weird techno scream and then really reminding me of Zerstören from Rosenrot. Next up is the title track, Bastard. The track has a nice driving beat with almost spoken lyrics before getting right in your face with the chorus and this really sets up the album nicely. The next track is the haunting Nichts Spricht Wahre Liebe Freiwhich is in the vein of Ohne Dich off Reise, Reise. From there though, the rest of the album loses it way a bit and I find it all starts sounding very similar with no real stand out tracks. Dein Gott (Your God) is the best of the rest, which are all reminiscent in varying degrees of Rammstein’s work, which when I look at it, is what drew me to the album originally. Unfortunately I find my enthusiasm waning as the variety that Rammstein is able to instill into its offerings is not available through Bastard. In saying that, the album is worth a listen for the first four tracks alone, but after that it becomes a bit to formulaic for me.
