Prong is an American metal band formed in 1986. Prong had two independent releases,Primitive Origins and Force Fed. The albums attracted the attention of Epic Records,who signed the trio in 1989. The group disbanded in 1997 after the Rude Awakening tour, but re-formed in 2002. To date, they have released eight studio albums, one live album, four EPs, one DVD and one remix album. A pioneer of the urban metal scene, Prong is fronted by Tommy Victor. Korn's Jonathan Davis, Demon Hunter's Ryan Clark, and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor all cite Prong as an influence to their musical style.The band was founded by singer/guitarist Tommy Victor (then a sound engineer for the club CBGB) and bassist Mike Kirkland (doorman at CBGB’s). Ex-Swans drummer Ted Parsons joined a few months later. Prong released an EP Primitive Origins and an album Force Fed that were noted for their brutal hardcore punk sound.[citation needed] The recordings were released on Southern Records in the U.K. and Europe in the late 1980s.Epic Records saw the band's potential and signed them in 1989. Prong's major label debut album, Beg to Differ, was released in 1990.In the following year, Kirkland left the band and was replaced by bassist Troy Gregory. Prong issued their fourth release, with new songwriter William Houston Prove You Wrong, which saw the band experiment with programming and electronic samples while still retaining an aggressive yet melodic sensibility.By 1994, Troy Gregory was out of the band and was replaced by Paul Raven and John Bechdel, both from Killing Joke and Murder, Inc. The new line up released Cleansing (Prong’s 5th major release). With a slight industrial metal influence, Cleansing contained songs that are still considered Prong classics ("Broken Peace" and "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck") and is Prong’s most successful release to date. The videos for these two songs became staples of MTV’s legendary Headbangers Ball. The band toured America with Sepultura and Pantera as an opener for their Chaos A.D. and Far Beyond Driven tours. And a headlining European tour with Life of Agony and The Obsessed as their support.Prong's sixth album Rude Awakening was released in 1996. It entered the charts at No. 74 and sold 10,000 units in America in one week. Epic Records decided Prong were not selling enough records and released them from their contract 3 weeks later. Shortly thereafter, Prong's line-up disbanded prior to a tour supporting Type O Negative; Victor later joined Danzig as Glenn's guitar player, and Raven and Parsons left to join Godflesh.In 2000, Victor re-formed Prong with bassist Brian Perry (Jake E. Lee) (Flood), drummer Dan Laudo and guitarist Monte Pittman (Madonna). In 2002, after a 42-show American tour that was recorded for a live CD (100% Live, Locomotive Music) Prong entered the studio and recorded a new CD titled Scorpio Rising which was received with mixed responses.Victor played on and off again with Glenn Danzig from 1998–2005 in between time with Prong. His final goal of playing and writing on a Danzig record was met with Circle of Snakes in 2004.Prong released a live 2-disc DVD in 2005 entitled "The Vault" which features performances from the Hulstsfred and With Full Force festivals and a full show in Amsterdam. This disc has Brian Perry and Mike Longworth on bass as Longworth replaced Perry after his departure in 2003. Dan Laudo left the band in 2005 and the band enlisted Aaron Rossi, who used to be in the bands Strife (Victory Records), Shelter (Century Media Records), John 5 (Shrapnel Records), and Ankla (Bieler Bros. Records).Victor and Raven joined Ministry in 2005 to write and tour in support of their album Rio Grande Blood (2006). They were nominated for a Grammy in 2007 for the song Senior Peligro in the "Best Metal Performance" category. The two also appear on Ministry's follow up album The Last Sucker (2007), although in a more limited capacity.In 2007, Prong signed to Al Jourgensen's 13th Planet Records, who released Power of the Damager on October 2, 2007. The band embarked on the "Slicing Across America" and "Slicing Across Europe" tours supporting the album in 2007 and early 2008. Joining Tommy Victor for the tour were Monte Pittman and drummer Aaron Rossi; Paul Raven had died of an apparent heart attack in his sleep on October 20, 2007 at the age of 46.Aaron Rossi joined Ministry as their new drummer on the "C U LaTour" which started in March 2008.Alexei Rodriguez and Tony Campos from Static-X are currently on the lineup with Tommy supporting Soulfly on the "Blood Fire War Hate" tour in the fall of 2009.The band supported Fear Factory on their tour which ended on June 6, 2010. Prong released a new album, Carved Into Stone, on April 23, 2012, with Long Branch Records/SPV. It was produced by Steve Evetts. The band toured as a headliner and with acts such as Crowbar in the US and in May 2012 performed Beg to Differ in its entirety during a two-week tour in Europe.

In the long and storied history of American Hardcore Metal band PRONG, they have established a reputation of being influential to many Rock and Metal artists, young and old. They have an impressive discography that span a length of time from the late eighties all the way through present day. Among their feats as a band, being so influential that bands like DEMON HUNTER and SIX FEET UNDER cover their songs ("Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck") as well as being featured on the legendary Headbanger's Ball in the early-to-mid nineties is right up there near the top in my book in terms of the coolness factor.Continuing their statement as an impact force in the world of Metal, they have just released a new album in March 2015 called "Songs From the Black Hole." It seems that Tommy Victor and his bandmates are not running out of new song ideas any time soon. These ten tracks do not give me the impression whatsoever that they are scraping the bottom of the barrel to make new music. PRONG are sticking to the formula that propelled them into the spotlight and all of the songs on the album have tons of energy and are within the band's distinct sound. The post-production depth of the instrumentation gives this album a very listenable tone."Songs From the Black Hole" is not simply the product of a few guys playing instruments and singing. There is a definite direction and message in each song and at times, the listener can identify with some of the aggression and emotion being expressed in the lyrics. Though repetitive at various times ("Don't Want To Know If You're Lonely" for example), most of the songs are within the confines of what someone would expect of PRONG. And yes, that includes the cover of BAD BRAINS' "Banned in D.C." I really liked this version and I can say that, since I am a fan of the original.I love the crossover element that PRONG have employed with this album. There are major Thrash Metal and Punk influences that can be heard and I found myself headbanging a little bit and tapping my feet to the rhythms. I even fell under the shadow of the ballad-esque "Cortez The Killer" as it slowly wound its way through my ears. It was a great song to finish off the album and I was a little bummed that it was already over. It is hard to deny that PRONG know exactly what they are doing and they are very good at it. Fans new and old will enjoy this album for years to come!

Breaks in Tommy Victor’s career, which includes a position in Danzig’s band, are a rarity, especially for his main project Prong. With genre-defining albums dating back over two decades, including their 1996 album Cleansing, Prong’s distinctive groove have made them a household name. Now on their twelfth full-length, Zero Days marks the fourth consecutive year in a row in which the band has released an album; a testament to their ability to deliver consistently.Zero Days follows what is now known as the typical Prong sound — a mixture of industrial metal, thrash, hardcore, and a distinctly nineties penchant for groove (see the album’s eponymous track). Of the more recent material that Victor’s collective has released, this album seems about on par consistency-wise with 2014’s Ruining Lives as opposed to the relatively forgettable X — No Absolutes. Back to front, Zero Days has total consistency — no unfitting tracks like the odd “Belief System” from X — No Absolutes which sounds like the wrong kind of Sepultura song gone deathcore.Adding certain textural elements to the fray, we now hear harsh, throaty screams behind Victor’s signature yell — something even weathered fans would not have expected ten years ago. Now over a quarter century old, Beg to Differ seems so long ago, but Zero Days makes Prong’s thrash roots clear. Victor certainly keeps up the intensity, resulting in the band’s heaviest album in quite some time.Ironically, the album cover showcases an American flag of sorts, in line with Victor’s clearly defined political opinions. With tracks like “Forced Into Intolerance” and “Operation of Moral Law,” the album’s concentration on moral ideology is abundantly clear. It is Victor’s belief that Donald Trump is metal too, via a recent interview on Blabbermouth; at least in a sense of counterculture and going against the general grain.Will Prong put out a new album in 2018? It’s likely, yes, but that is ultimately up to Victor and the whims of his writing process. For fans of Prong, Zero Days is another in a long line of solid releases for the band. Zero Days is Prong in 2017: a solid thrash-heavy album with tendencies leaning toward the band’s salad days of industrial music. Victor shows no signs of slowing down, and if the release pattern and quality are any sign of his intent, then fans should continue to be excited.

Prong is a pioneering groove and industrial metal band that has left a significant mark upon the metal scene in the late eighties and throughout the nineties but the band's career has been on a decline ever since. Excessive spans between album releases and an elevated number of line-up changes combined with a lack of innovation and vapid songwriting have contributed to the band's downfall. I'm glad to inform you however that the trio's thirteenth full length effort is a surprising return to form and might qualify for greatest comeback release of the year.The success of Prong's State of Emergency starts with its vibrant, organic and energetic production that takes no prisoners. It continues with focused songwriting skills, offering eleven tunes with a total running time of forty-two minutes. The chemistry between the three musicians is tight, natural and dynamic. The final product sounds as if the three band members had been playing together for decades. Here's hope that the current line-up will end up standing the test of time.Musically, we get to hear the band's unique blend of groove, industrial and thrash metal that sounds quite balanced, focused and passionate this time around. ''The Descent'' is an atmospheric yet energetic opener that sets the right tone for the entire output. Thunderous title track ''State of Emergency'' has a relentless, proud and energetic swagger. ''Obeisance'' is a gritty deep cut with thought-provoking lyrics on the pulse of time and might qualify as my favourite tune on this output. One must also point out the excellent rendition of Rush's ''Working Man'', a tune that is nearly fifty years old and has originally been performed by some of the most skilled rock musicians in the world, that has been transformed into a tight, powerful and aggressive album closer on the pulse of time that honours the stylistics of the original material while managing to sound like one of the band's very own tunes.If you had forgotten about Prong throughout the past years and decades, now would be an excellent moment to give the trio a fair chance again. State of Emergency is the band's greatest release in decades and oozes with energy, focus and grit. Elements of groove metal, industrial metal and thrash metal collide in a balanced way and meet an organic production and thought-provoking lyrics on the pulse of time. The excellent progressive rock cover song is the cherry atop the cake. Spin this record loudly and proudly and celebrate this band's unexpected return to form in style.
