Bio:

Sevendust is an American alternative metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 1994 by bassist Vince Hornsby, drummer Morgan Rose and guitarist John Connolly. After their first demo, lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon and guitarist Clint Lowery joined the group. Following a few name changes, the members settled on the name Sevendust and released their self-titled debut album on April 15, 1997.The self-titled album sold 311 copies its first week. However, through touring and TVT support, the album gained charting success through Billboard and earned gold certification. Since formation, Sevendust has released nine studio albums, earned additional charting success and gold sales certifications. Their eighth studio album, titled Cold Day Memory, was released on April 20, 2010. They have also re-released their self-titled album as Sevendust: Definitive Edition which contains five new tracks and a DVD.Their latest effort, Time Travelers & Bonfires, was released on April 15, 2014.

Album:

Home is the second studio album by American rock band Sevendust, released on August 24, 1999 through TVT Records. The album appeared on the Billboard 200, remained there for fourteen weeks and peaked at 19 on September 11, 1999.Home was certified gold on May 18, 2000 through the Recording Industry Association of America. The album features thirteen tracks on the United States release and sixteen tracks on the Japan release, with two tracks featuring artists outside of Sevendust.Three singles were released from the album, two of which appeared on the mainstream and modern Billboard charts."Waffle" is used in the 2001 Down to Earth film and "Denial" is used in the 2001 ATV Offroad Fury video game. Two years after releasing a promising debut, Sevendust hit the studio to record Home which many consider to be their magnum opus. Home is Sevendust’s best selling record and for good rhyme and reason. While the music itself isn’t instrumentally or lyrically amazing, they developed a fresh batch of catchy songs that one can listen to when the mood hits right.Sevendust’s overall mood on Home is that of a murky, brash and dramatic record. Of course, there are those nu-metal cliché moments of angst on the record, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem to steer away listeners. They use it well and not in a whiny way a la Korn or Limp Bizkit. The music sounds tight and focused and that is what makes this record so good and a definitive album for nu-metal fans. The opening track, Home hits hard and rightfully so. The song is propelled forward by down tuned, chugging guitars from left to right and Lajon Witherspoon’s strong delivery of vocals. The song gives you a lot of adrenaline and as mentioned before, the members of Sevendust are by no means virtuoso’s on their instruments, but they get the job done, after all Sevendust’s music doesn’t call for fast as lighting guitar solo’s or complex drum patterns. The main focal point of their music is the melody and the overall atmosphere. After a booming opening track, the listener is left eagerly anticipating for what is going to come next. Denial, Sevendust’s lead single off Home is a nice paced alternative metal song. Lajon’s vocals on this track once again are spectacular, they add a lot to the essence to the soundscape that Sevendust create all together. The song is produced well and all the members add good input to the structure of the song. Headtrip and Reconnect are also good tracks that incorporate that post-grunge feeling. They are good tracks, but don’t add an impact like Home and Denial did. They do however keep the constant flow of the mood that was set at the beginning of the record. The next few tracks are some of the best on the record. The oddly named, Waffle is a great tune with awe-inspiring vocals by Lajon and a great performance by drummer, Morgan Rose. The verses are slow paced while the pre-chorus is a thundering delivery of vocals and chugging guitar. Clint Lowery, lead guitarist and writer, did a great job on this song as well. It is an excellent song that is fed into the listener’s ears, and into their head. Waffle is a song you’ll have on repeat for awhile. Rumble Fish is more of a fast paced rocker song with great input from all members. The song starts off with a nice palm muted guitar chord. The vocals sound very, how should I say, angry and frustrated but that makes the song a bit more memorable in my opinion.Another single off Home, and an awesomely great one at that, Licking Cream is perhaps the standout track that Home offers. Licking Cream features guest vocals from female singer, Skin, who is formally from the British rock band, Skunk Anansie. Lajon and Skin, rule the track with their brilliant vocal performances and is the reason why this track is so memorable. The last track, Bender features highly influential vocalist, Chino Moreno from the Deftones. The song itself is a good (not great) way to end the album. Moreno and Witherspoon’s vocals harmonize beautifully in the choruses and Chino adds a bit more belligerence to the song. This song would have done better being placed earlier in the album, but it gets the job done closing the album. On Home, one thing constantly stands out and that is Lajon Witherspoon’s vocal performance. He is truly the most talented member of Sevendust and vitally exhibits his gift as a vocalist throughout Home. Some of tracks might lack musicianship since they are so simplistic and bland, and there are some bad tracks on here but Lajon manages to keep Sevendust interesting throughout the record on most of the tracks. This might draw people away that are looking for a breathtaking performance with promising guitars and bass lines and drums, but Sevendust manages okay in this aspect. There are tracks that are nothing more than filler such as Insecure, an unimpressive instrumental that is used as a crossing gap to the next track and the outrageously short, Grasshopper. If you are looking for murky music that is unique in its own way from their peers and with a hell of singer, you need not be disappointed, Sevendust’s sophomore effort, Home is a must for you.

Album:

Black Out the Sun marks the band's first album in almost three years. After concluding touring in support of their eighth album, Cold Day Memory, many of the members spent 2012 working on side projects, with guitarist Clint Lowery and drummer Morgan Rose forming Call Me No One and releasing Last Parade. Concurrently, guitarist John Connolly and bassist Vinnie Hornsby formed Projected and released Human. By the end of the year, the members reunited and began collective work on Black Out the Sun.Rose stated that the band took the same approach to the album as he and Lowery had with making Last Parade, stating:"For that album we went in with very little material, and it was really exciting and we had a good time doing it...It was fresh. We didn't over think stuff too much. So we kinda sold the rest of the guys on trying to do it that way. We were maybe a little apprehensive going in, but it worked exactly the way we had hoped. We didn't have any songs, but everybody grabbed their station and kind of picked up whatever needed help or work, and we were able to bang out it with nothing but riffs. It was really from the cuff..." The exception to this was the band's first single, "Decay", which had a riff that originated from the Cold Day Memory sessions, but the band had waited to finish it for Black Out the Sun, in fear they were too burned out to do it justice originally. The album was recorded at Architekt Music Studios in Butler, New Jersey.Witherspoon stated that the album's title was chosen due a dream of his, stating, "In the dream, the sun was going away and I was just looking for safety before it happened and not necessarily knowing what would happened [sic] when it blacked out but just knowing that something was scary. I guess it just seems more like the feeling of the unknown." Connolly described the album's sound as having "a darker vibe", with "still plenty of melody", comparing it more to the band's earlier albums Animosity, Alpha and Sevendust and that it "is almost like a greatest-hits record of songs you've never heard before." Lowery described the album's sound as "spontaneous" and said that it "has the spirit of our older records, but it's evolved as well".The album received critical acclaim on release. Artist Direct gave a positive review, saying "it's like they've transmuted the ferocity of their classic self-titled debut, Home, and Animosity into the sharp, succinct songwriting sensibility of Cold Day Memory." Similarly Allmusic stated that "Black Out The Sun is such a solidly constructed album that it's hard to fault these guys for doing what they do best and giving the people the kind of skull-crushing hard rock that they're asking for." IMDb also reviewed the album, stating, "While the tone of the material on this album is a bit darker and more ominous, it's still every bit as much a Sevendust project; a few elements here began life in another form during Cold Day Memory's songwriting sessions, but as a whole the tense, urgent vibe here falls more in line with their groundbreaking 2001 release Animosity." Larry Petro from KNAC gave the album 5 out of 5, stating, "I absolutely love it when a band puts out an album that is great from start to finish, with no urge to skip a track, and that's exactly what Sevendust has done with Black Out The Sun." The Aquarian Weekly reviewer praised the album, saying, "This album shows the group remains dedicated to their craft, excited about making new music and eager to embrace the risks that go with it. And that's the kind of thing that will keep the fans excited for a good while longer." Dusty Peters from UnRated Magazine wrote, "Black Out the Sun is one of the most complete metal albums that has been released in quite some time. A fan or not of Sevendust, after listening to Black Out the Sun, you will truly experience the love that the band has for music and themselves. With over 16 years together and 9 recorded albums to their name, Sevendust has completed their musical journey to the top with Black Out the Sun."

Album:

Eleven albums now and SEVENDUST is still rolling with the same band of brothers, which says plenty in an industry that devours musicians and regurgitates new lineups monthly. Only for three years between 2005 and 2008 did guitarist and heavy-duty songwriter Clint Lowery depart. Otherwise, the band has remarkably retained the same core, co-founded by John Connolly, Vince Hornsby and Morgan Rose, fortified by Lowery and, of course, their impeccable frontman Lajon Witherspoon. SEVENDUST's latest album "Kill the Flaw" doesn't wholly soft soap, but it sure does swing a chancy step over the line. As Witherspoon has stated about the record, the band has "taken time off from the heavy side," and he's not kidding. There are plenty of hard cuts on the album, but "Kill the Flaw" will challenge even the band's most devout at times.Opening with "Thank You", which dropped as a preview single in late July, the song minces crunchy metalcore riffs with Kurt Wubbenhorst's swaying keys and pop-driven choruses. Morgan Rose's tappity rhythm gives the decidedly lighter track a sense of urgency as Lajon Witherspoon divides his time between growls on the rougher parts and softer croons. "Death Dance" is likewise on the lighter side even with the slowly cut agro chords dishing up the verses. Fans aren't going to be too miffed by the aromatic choruses since Lajon Witherspoon dishes them gorgeously. Still, the intended toughness behind the breakdown on "Death Dance" is unconvincing. The song establishes an easygoing identity and works best in that mode.SEVENDUST gets heavier with some nasty chops and clubbing rhythms on "Forget", but the rippling choruses keep the track from getting downright mean. If Lajon Witherspoon wasn't such a powerful singer, "Forget", would be easy to do just that, which is where the band is at with this album. SEVENDUST has grown progressively leaner and hook-driven over the years; one nearly forgets their snaggletooth nu-metal days. Albeit, the album's projected second single, "Not Today", makes the most of the band's heavier grains with ramming riffs and rainy choruses. This is one of the album's strongest and most sensible tracks. When you have blatant pop nuggets like "Letters", "Cease and Desist" and "Death Dance", it's nearly shocking how tamed down SEVENDUST has become. The band reserves its full strength for the muscular closing number "Torched" with its pounding rhythm, riff barrages and mixed-in barks. It's been no secret that SEVENDUST has embraced a more tuneful (if predictable) identity, serving them well on seventh track "Chop", which would've been a so-so proto pounder without its peppered acoustic shakes and chirpy guitar solo."Kill the Flaw" is going to become an instant favorite for SEVENDUST's latter year following. You could drop Lajon Witherspoon in with a Kidz Bop ensemble and it would still be an absorbing enough listen. He's that great of a singer. Thus, no matter how much SEVENDUST changes up their methods, he's going to lure listeners for his silky lilt. For those who want more of a mash to the band's sound ("Silly Beast" serving up plenty of that), "Kill the Flaw" has some, sure, but most of it gets pushed behind backdrops of occasionally shaky pop suspensions.

Lajon Witherspoon - lead vocals

Vinnie Hornsby - bass guitar
Morgan Rose - drums, backing vocals

Album:

All I See Is War is the twelfth studio album by Sevendust. It is scheduled for release on May 11, 2018. Three songs have been released from the album; the first single, "Dirty", and two promotional songs, "Not Original", and "Medicated."The band wrote far more potential songs for the album; while they usually write around 30 songs to select from when compiling a track list of an album, for All I See is War, the band wrote between 50 and 60 songs.Recording for the album began in the second half of 2017.The band chose to work with music producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette on the album, their first time working with an outside producer in a number of albums, where they had opted to self-produce or work band collaborator and sound engineer Mike Ferretti. They chose Baskette in an effort to "reboot" the band's sound, knowing that he was very particular in scrutinizing every little detail of the music he produced. The band liked him for his work producing music for Stone Temple Pilots and Incubus, while Baskette had been a fan of Sevendust since their 1999 album Home; he hoped the help the band recreate the "impact" of the sound create on Home."Dirty" was described as having a traditional Sevendust sound, featuring "heavy" guitarwork and melodic and emotional vocals by Lajon Witherspoon.Contrary to that, the track "Not Original" was noted as being softer than most of their work, described as a ballad. In addition, the song is inspired by Netflix's Stranger Things. "We wanted to get into some new territory," explains Clint Lowery. "It's about being in a dry spell and not able to find creativity. You don't want to repeat yourself. I thought I'd go for this new wave thing, because I was watching a lot of Stranger Things."

ALT-METAL/HARD ROCK: Carving out a distinctive and long-lasting career in the music business these days is almost impossible. Thankfully, a band so charismatic as Atlanta’s Sevendust comes along and makes everything feel all right. On its 13 full-length album, Blood & Stone, the quintet continues with its distinctive sound it carved out since its 1994 inception.Sevendust hit virtual home runs with their first four albums—Sevendust, Home, Animosity, Seasons—which are considered to be classics in the band’s back catalog. There’s really no such thing as a bad Sevendust record, but it was a little easy to forget about the band starting in the late 2000s. However, Sevendust has aged very well and received favorable reviews on its previous album, 2018’s All I See Is War.Featuring vocalist Lajon Witherspoon, guitarists Clint Lowery and John Connolly, bassist Vince Hornsby, and drummer Morgan Rose, Sevendust has remarkably sustained a very stable lineup throughout its existence with only one member change to date. On these 13 new tracks (including a rousing cover of Soundgarden’s “The Day I Tried to Live”), Sevendust has created a perfect mixture of the band’s early era sound combined with its more modern, latter era output.Opener “Dying to Live” contains the familiar Sevendust musical mixture—heavy, chugging riffs, combined with pulsating melodies and soaring vocal harmonies. It’s what the band has done so well since its beginning. The same goes for tracks “What You’ve Become,” “Nothing Left to See Here Anymore,” “Dying to Live,” “Desperation,” and especially the main riff on “Blood From A Stone,” while “Feel Like Going On” contains the more modern, alt-metal vibe of their current status, which balances out the album nicely. The record also contains some melodic, ballad-esque tracks such as “Criminal” and “Alone” that complete the overall dynamic and listening experience. In addition, the music box-esque keyboard melody intro on “Kill Me” plays well with the overall mood of the track, while “Against the World” is one of the heaviest songs on the album. The song structures on Blood & Stone are short, guitar/vocal-driven tracks that are super accessible and inviting. There’s just enough aggression and heaviness injected into each track, but there’s also generous helpings of melancholy and melody mixed in as well. The track sequencing is also a strong point to the record, which makes the listener feel very engaged throughout the entire album. There are also quite a few electronic samples and atmosphere throughout the album (see “Love” and “Dying to Live”) that adds a different dynamic, but never overpowers a particular track. The overall sound is very well balanced as the drums/guitar tandem play off each other well where not one instrument is higher in the mix than the other. Blood & Stone marks the return of producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Tremonti, Slash), who achieves a remarkably familiar sound with a crisp, clear, and pristine production. The standout element of Blood & Stone would have to be Lajon’s superb vocals. The soulful singer brings emotion, feeling, and atmosphere with each line he sings, making a heartfelt connection with the lyrics. It’s just so great to be able to say that there’s a new Sevendust album out. Blood & Stone is everything a Sevendust fan could want.
