Hollywood Undead is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2005.They released their debut album, Swan Songs, on September 2, 2008, and their live CD/DVD Desperate Measures, on November 10, 2009. Their second studio album, American Tragedy, was released April 5, 2011. All of the band members use pseudonyms and previously wore their own unique mask, most of which were based on the common hockey goaltender design. The band members currently consist of Charlie Scene, Danny, Funny Man, J-Dog, and Johnny 3 Tears. Their third studio album, titled Notes from the Underground, was released on January 8, 2013.Their fourth studio album, Day of the Dead, was released on March 31, 2015.Hollywood Undead's fifth record is titled Five (or V), and was released on October 27, 2017.The first single from the album, called "California Dreaming", was made available July 24, 2017.Their recent sixth studio album, New Empire, Vol. 1, was released on February 14, 2020.The band originated on June 3, 2005, as The Kids from a song titled "Hollywood" (Later released as "The Kids") that Jorel Decker (J-Dog), Aron Erlichman (Deuce), and Jeff Phillips (Shady Jeff) posted on the band's MySpace profile to positive reviews, leading them to form the group Hollywood Undead with their friends George "Johnny 3 Tears" Ragan (formerly known as "The Server"), Jordon "Charlie Scene" Terrell, Dylan "Funny Man" Alvarez, and Matthew "Da Kurlzz" Busek. In an interview with Shave magazine, J-Dog explained that when forming the band "Whoever was in the room at the time and played an instrument was in the band."Phillips later left the group because of conflict with Erlichman. The band only took one year working on their debut album, Swan Songs. The other two years were spent looking for a company that wouldn't try to censor the album. They first signed a record contract with MySpace Records in 2005 but they left the label after the label tried to censor their first album. They then signed a contract with A&M/Octone Records and their first album, Swan Songs was released on September 2, 2008, and reached No.22 on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release, selling 21,000 copies; which was later on released in the United Kingdom on May 18, 2009, with two bonus tracks.[14] In April 2009, the band toured with American electronic musician Skrillex as "Sonny and the Blood Monkeys". On June 23, 2009, Hollywood Undead released Swan Songs B-Sides through iTunes. The band released a CD/DVD set entitled Desperate Measures on November 10, 2009. The set includes a CD of previously unreleased six new songs, three of which are cover songs, as well a previously unreleased remix of "Everywhere I Go", and six live recordings of songs from Swan Songs, and a DVD of a full live performance by the band.In December 2009, the band won Best Crunk/Rock Rap Artist at the Rock on Request Awards. In its first week of release, Desperate Measures reached No. 29 on the Billboard 200. It also peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard's Rock Albums chart, No. 8 on the Alternative Albums chart, No. 5 on the Hard Rock albums chart, and No. 15 on the Digital Albums chart.

Album:

Everyone in the Hard Rock/Metal scene seems to have fairly strong feelings about Hollywood Undead, not all of them good. Most of that seems to be based off the fact that they’re a Rap Rock band in goalie masks, a slightly more ghetto version of bands like Slipknot or Mushroomhead. They’ve always been kinda just…. there. I personally haven’t paid much attention to them, aside from reading occasional Kerrang or Metal Hammer write-ups, or stumbling across them on a Soundwave stage. So sure, I’ll throw the disc on and give them a chance, see how they go.The second single off the album is the opening track “Time Bomb”, and its named appropriately, this track goes OFF! Keeping way closer to the rock side of the scale, crisp crunchy guitars, electronic backings and an incredibly catchy bridge and chorus… do yourself a favour and go listen to that track as soon as you can, it’s a lot of fun.“Heart of a champion” starts with loads more synth, almost a “Linkin Park” style to it, this track wouldn’t feel out of place in the early 2000s which is a great nostalgic throwback feeling for anyone who weathered those years, like me. “Already dead” follows that same vibe, with a huge layered sound, it’s at about this point on the album, I questioned myself… “Is this really the Hollywood Undead” I remember? Its an eerie melody laden trip, and its great.“Empire” strays back into rap territory, just beats, lyrics and synth for most of the verses, with a nice sprinkling of electronic vocal distortion. Definitely the most modern track of the album so far, which doesn’t change direction much with “Killin it” Minimalist beats and fairly straight forward lyrics, with a few fun nods to Godzilla, Stephen King and serial killer John Wayne Gacey. Good times. “Enemy” throws us a high energy guitar lick, and a hilariously large usage of Motherfucker. This is one of those stand out tracks that will get people jumping at a festival, with another arena-ready chorus that almost strays a little pop punk in its melody. It’s a great guitar laden romp. “Upside Down” follows that trend, sounding very reminiscent of 2017’s “California Dreaming”(Another great track from Hollywood Undead). Its got a great pop punk/metalcore flavour to it, and I’d say a big part of that is a vocal cameo from “Sleeping with Sirens” Kellin Quinn. The guest spots continue with pop punk heavyweight Benji “Good Charlotte” Madden on “Second Chances”. This song is ethereal and expansive, a complex yet incredibly heavy track. It’s definitely a huge stand out on this album, with energy, variance and an almost timeless sound. Totally unexpected, but thoroughly welcome. The album closes with “Nightmare”. Tinkling pianos and minimalist beats across the board with this one, loads of electronic distortion. It certainly conjuors the feeling of being trapped in a nightmare, especially an unfinished line capped off with a flat-lining heart monitor. It’s perfectly serviceable, but almost feels a little out of place to finish this album off, especially chasing a bombastic track like “Second Chances”.“Hollywood Undead” have crafted a damn good album, mixing multiple musical genres, vocal styles, nostalgic sounds and even bands together to create something really special. It sounds perfectly at home within their back catalog, yet totally different and mature at the same time. If you’re not a fan of “Hollywood Undead”, this may very well change that. Some songs may not hit their mark for you, but listened cover-to-cover, it’s hard to deny that the hard work and tenacity of this band has paid off very well. “New Empire Vol. One” is out on Valentine’s Day, and I reckon you should give this band some “Second Chances”.

Album:

California’s Hollywood Undead has been around since 2005 and they have been busy ever since! With an easily recognizable sound that combines the strong rhythms of Hip Hop with Rock-influenced arrangements, as well as dueling vocals, the band has built a name for themselves for being one in a million. Catchy and energetic yet honest and true, the Hip Hop Rock outfit—or Industrial Hip Hop band—is ready to drop some new music yet again with New Empire Vol. 2 on Friday, December 4th via BMG/Dove & Grenade Media. The follow-up to February 2020’s New Empire Vol. 1, unlike its more succinct sibling, New Empire Vol. 2 comes with 12 tracks and they all appear to be deeply personal. Some of the most vulnerable include “Medicate,” “Gonna Be Okay,” “Coming Home,” and “Monster,” though the entire album is worth listening to closely. The group’s catchy arrangements make it easy for listeners to keep their focus on the music without experiencing the temptation to drift off. But the same can be said for most Hollywood Undead material, right?Throughout New Empire Vol. 2, only three songs feature guest artists. The first of these three is a new edition of “Heart Of A Champion,” which features the talents of Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach and Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills. These are two amazing artists from two bands that Hollywood Undead toured Europe with earlier in 2020, that is, until COVID-19 changed the world of music entirely by putting an abrupt stop to live music. But, at least, in the studio these three bands can continue making music. That said, the bond they have forged is very strong and this is clear throughout the song. The track bursts with emotions, strength and positivity, and the listener is left behind wanting more. In fact, there could even be a full album-length collaboration between these three bands and no one would mind. So let’s hope that Hollywood Undead, Ice Nine Kills and Papa Roach can eventually continue their joint tour, and maybe we will get such an album. The last two songs interestingly carry the same title but feature two different artists. The first version of “Idol” features the German band Ghøstkid, who also did two versions of their own song “This Is Not Hollywood,” which was released on their most recent album. The second version of “Idol” features Kurt92, a Russian Hip Hop artist. To add further dimensions to the music, each artist performs their part in their native language; so the Ghøstkid part on “Idol” is in German, and the Kurt92 part is in Russian. This means that listeners can find three versions of “Idol” on this album: one by Hollywood Undead themselves, one with Ghøstkid and one with Kurt92. Each one of the three sounds similar and yet places its very own spin on the story. It is a quite interesting approach for Hollywood Undead to gather the songs with collaborations at the very end of the album, effectively guaranteeing that they will not distract the listener from the band’s other songs. Also, the idea of having two different artists create individual versions of the same song, and then placing them next to each other on the album, is a great way of pointing out different sides to the same story—or simply giving each guest artist some room to add their unique piece to the tale.Ultimately, with New Empire Vol. 2, Hollywood Undead has released yet another brilliant set of new music. An album filled with energy and strength, it will empower each listener and spread positivity, despite the fact that some of the songs are quite harsh and aggressive here and there.

Album:

A wave of nostalgia hits you when you hear the mildly comical yet banger of a tune that is “Everywhere I Go” and deep cuts like “Bullet”. Fast forward a decade and you’ll find yourself with the same five people, still etching onwards, though now sounding more mature and incorporating more of an arena rock sound. There was always a well-equilibrated dynamic present across every album, balancing out the party anthem songs with the more emotional and provocative ones. Pair that with five (formerly six) different vocalists who brought their A-games and, more importantly, different flavors to it all, and you have a band that pioneered a genre. While Five brought the more raw sound while sacrificing the “fun” songs, it still retained the emotion and energy the band possessed. However, that changed with the two volumes of New Empire. Stripped of all that is goofy and sounding a tad too serious, it felt as if all that made the band enjoyable to listen to just ceased existing.Enter Hotel Kalifornia, the quintet’s eighth full length. After the previous releases, I did not have any positive expectations going into it, besides more average radio rock choruses chocking the album. However, the child in me who grew up on the band is happy to announce that that is not the case, for the most part. The spark that made Hollywood Undead make a jump from Myspace to everyone’s iPods back in late 2000s has been rejuvenated here, if only momentarily. Despite being shorter than the norm at just under three quarters of an hour, the sheer number of songs allows for an assortment of styles that gives all five members of the band the opportunity to shine.Rap verses have always been the strong suit for Hollywood Undead, and Hotel Kalifornia delivers some of the best songs they have released in that regard. “Ruin My Life” is a highlight of the band’s discography. Obviously more mature than their more primitive stuff, as is expected with the passage of time, it is still an absolute blast and a throwback tune to the good old days. “Wild In These Streets” sits among their best rap work yet, akin to older classics like “Black Cadillac” in tone. Drew Fulk’s influence in the mix is clearly felt with the punchiness of the beats, giving them a more pop edge. A lot of the more better songs (See “Happy When I Die” and “Alright”) can be traced back to having their roots in American Tragedy and Swan Songs but with a more evolved sound.Much to my dismay, not everything is sunshine and unicorns. There’s a sizeable amount of uninspired choruses that are repeated an excessive amount of times. These steal valuable track time from the verses that have always been the star of the show. While the lyrical themes manage to portray what the band wanted to say about their time years ago, most of the choruses fall off and fail to hook you in. For each amazing verse, there are two average at best, and often the same, choruses. On the bright side, the overall length of the album is short enough to make those bearable. That is not to say that every chorus is mediocre; “Hourglass” is a great counterpart to some of the angsty rock tunes from Five.Hotel Kalifornia is a step in the right direction musically. While there is still a lot of ground to cover and corners to cut in terms of the rock-oriented chorus side of things, the spirit of older songs is still there, fleeting. Change is evident as people get older and it would not be fair to expect the edginess of the days of old, but the spirit that put Hollywood Undead on the radar in the first place needs to be there. And for this one time, it is there, but just barely. ‘Will I Be Alright?‘ asks Charlie Scene on the closer. If they keep going down this path, they sure will be alright.
