Bio:

Stephen James "Steve" Howe (born 8 April 1947 in Holloway, North London, England) is an English musician, songwriter and backing vocalist, best known as the guitarist of the progressive rock group Yes. He has also been a member of The Syndicats, Bodast, Tomorrow, Asia and GTR, as well as having released 19 solo albums as of 2010.In October, 1975, Howe released Beginnings, his first solo album.[16] It featured Yes band members Alan White, Bill Bruford and Patrick Moraz and reached number 63 in the US and number 22 in the UK charts. His second album as a soloist, The Steve Howe Album, was released in November, 1979.[17] Howe played alone on half of the tracks, while others again feature White, Bruford and Moraz, along with vocalist Claire Hamill. Since 1991, Howe has released a solo recording almost every year, ranging from acoustic to progressive to a Bob Dylan tribute. In 2001, was released Natural Timbre, exclusively with acoustic guitars. His son Dylan, now a respected jazz musician, played the drums on his 1998 all-instrumental solo release, Quantum Guitar,[18] while Elements, released in 2003, featured both Dylan and Howe's younger son Virgil (keyboards and vocals), as part of a project called Remedy.Howe's personal web site, Guitar Rondo, was launched in May, 1996.[11] The guitarist takes an active role in the site by conducting auctions for gold albums and selected guitars, and answering questions from fans.On 24 May 1996, Howe received an honorary Doctorate in Musical Arts (DMA) from Five Towns College in Dix Hills, New York.In 2007, Howe founded the Steve Howe Trio, a jazz band completed by his son Dylan on drums and Ross Stanley on Hammond organ.Howe's influences are a mix of classical, jazz, country, pop and rock. Some of them are Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, Kenny Burrell, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Les Paul, Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant.

Album:

Steve Howe has probably never got the credit he deserved for his role in fashioning the legends of both Yes and Asia. The Homebrew series, whether intended or not, has done much to underscore his privotal role in the creative process of both.Up to the fifth edition now, the series is now exploring demos and early takes on songs that, after some collaborative work with other bandmates, emerged on Yes’ Fly From Here and Keys to Ascension albums, Asia’s XXX and Omega projects, and his own 2005 solo effort Spectrum. What you hear is just how critical Howe’s contributions so often were. These early versions illustrate the way he created the structure from which everything else is built for many of these albums’ more memorable moments.Homebrew 5 opens with “Bumpy Ride,” the gnarled riff that later showed up as Part 4 of the title track suite from Yes’ Fly From Here. “Yang” bookended the full-length version of “Hour of Need,” from the same 2011 album. “Solitaire,” in this far more baroque iteration, is filled out with a dueting keyboard element — whereas it was originally presented as a solo piece on Fly From Here. The basic groove of “Into the Storm,” one of the more modern pieces from the album, can be found here with “Hairpin Bend,” as well.Going further back, “Addicted to You” initially arrived as part of the 1996 Yes album Keys to Ascension. Fans of early Yes are directed to “Seven on Seven,” which evolved into the all-but-unknown 2010 import extra from Asia called “Drop a Stone.”Speaking of Asia, we get a peek into the creative process on “No Religion,” a track that was ultimately further developed by John Wetton and Geoff Downes on last year’s anniversary album, XXX. “The Other Sphere” morphed into “Judas,” with additional contributions from Wetton and Downes. Then there’s “Silver,” which arrived into the form of “Reno (Silver and Gold),” but only on the deluxe edition of XXX. Similarly, this set’s “Hiding from the Sun” became the Asia track “Through My Veins” on 2006’s Omega, after an assist from Wetton. “Light the Way” grew out of “Every Boundary,” and Howe’s contribution is once again writ large.Homebrew 5 is rounded out by nine raw and lively early takes on songs that later appeared as part of Spectrum, the best of which is appropriately named “Labrynth.”

The 18 tracks on Homebrew 6 are presented in their original recorded form and have never before been released. The CD booklet contains comprehensive sleeve notes from Steve himself, outlining the history and workings behind each of the tracks. For nearly 35 years, Steve Howe has been at the forefront of guitarists in popular music. Actually, simply referring to Howe as a just a guitarist is limiting. In addition to being a songwriter he plays more instruments than just the guitar. If it has strings and a fretboard, Howe has mastered it and recorded with it at some point on one of countless albums he's been a part of as a group member, solo artist and special guest. The Homebrew project of releases which started with Volume 1 way back in 1996 draws on Steve Howe's own expansive home studio archive of demos and tracks, originally recorded for one of his many solo projects or recordings with Yes, AWBH (Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe) and GRT (Steve Howe, Steve Hackett and Geoff Downes). The 18 tracks on Homebrew 6 are presented in their original recorded form and have never before been released. The CD booklet contains comprehensive sleeve notes from Steve himself, outlining the history and workings behind each of the tracks.

Album:

Guitarist Steve Howe releases his new solo album Guitarscape on 27th September on his own HoweSound label. The album will be available on CD, vinyl and digital downloads, including Dolby Atmos.Guitarscape marks a new chapter for the YES and ASIA legend as he presents, what amounts to, a guitar masterclass. “What I’m doing,” said Steve, “is focusing on what I do well and what I love to do.” Guitarscape features 14 new instrumental tracks in a host of musical styles, from rock through to acoustic and classical, each bearing that unmistakable Steve Howe sound. Steve plays acoustic, electric, steel and bass guitars along with keyboards and is joined by his son Dylan on drums. Steve has written all of the tracks and produced the album.“This album has given me the opportunity to do something different,” says Steve. “I bought a Novatron Summit keyboard and found that it had a wealth of inspiring sounds. It gave me a golden opportunity to create my own keyboard structures – chordal movements and structures that I thought were a bit different. I think differently on a keyboard, I don’t see the chords looking the same but then I had fun playing around with the guitar to see where that goes.“I’ve utilised most of the colours, as I like to I think of my styles, and I’m always pleased when I hear them running through and it moves from a steel, maybe, to a Spanish guitar. Because it’s a different sort of album, I’m not using terribly conventional chord sequences but things that give me a fresh feeling and opportunities to improvise and stretch out as well as be melodic and make this a nice tuneful experience.“I began feeding the tracks to Dylan. We get on great and he seems to know what to play around my guitar, it’s almost instinctive. Dylan and I fit together really beautifully. We’ve had the chance to do this together, so it’s wonderful.“The bass parts and the keyboards are pretty interesting, everything had to be interesting but also work together. I like doing things that are super fresh and this album says what I am today.” Steve Howe
