Bio:

Founded in 2009 as a multinational collaboration project. The Samurai Of Prog was formed as a project lead by Finland-based Italian composer and bassist Marco Bernard. He's been active in the Finnish Association for Progressive Music since 1995, and have been involved in their Colossus Magazine since 1996 - and instrumental in the Colossus series of theme albums they have created in cooperation with French label Musea Records. It was for a contribution to one of those projects that The Samurai of Prog was born, and joining Bernard as permanent members we find US artist Steve Unruh and Finnish drummer Kimmo Pörsti.

Album:

It is a real pleasure to be able to listen to and review the albums of The Samurai Of Prog, one of the most prolific and high-quality projects in the current Progressive scene. In collaboration with Marco Grieco and a large number of guests, they release “Anthem to the Phoenix Star” on September 26, 2022 via Seacrest Oy. The album opens with the title track “Anthem to the Phoenix Star” and dreamy saxophone melodies over intertwining guitar and organ. The vocals are very warm and expressive and the track increases in intensity as the minutes go by, alternating between sung parts and refined solo inserts. Loaded with pathos, it immediately plunges us into the band’s own symphonic Prog atmospheres, with choral parts and sax solo inserts of the highest level. In the second part, the rhythm section accelerates and an instrumental part highlights all the instruments in a unique musical crescendo. The vocal returns for the last verses and the track closes with the last instrumental section. The keyboards open “Burning Silence” by intertwining with the horns, and then with a change give life to a very sophisticated Prog track. The keyboards intertwining with the horns and a solid rhythm section enriched by tempo changes, allow the vocal to interpret the intense lyrics with passion. The textures are very elaborate, displaying a very high level of technique in both composition and performance. The alternation of intricate parts and symphonic openings, with all the artists involved adding their personal touch to a sound. A warm, deep vocal characterises the intro of “Killing Hopes,” which is initially softer and more delicate before developing into an elaborate song between Prog and Folk influences. The interweaving of keyboards and violin give an extra quid to the song, enriched by the tempo changes and very refined and sophisticated passages and phrasing between the instruments. At the beginning of the second part of the song, an acoustic section with guitar arpeggios paves the way for a solo section with keyboards in evidence. In the finale, the choral singing returns and the song gently leads us to the close with an intense electric guitar solo. “Bones” opens with xylophone and stretches between Prog and Folk, with a sweet female vocal and a solid but softer rhythm section. The dreamy atmospheres of the song accompany us gently, thanks also to the fine female vocals that take centre stage in the first part. In the middle part, the intensity increases, turning the guitar riffs and keyboards more aggressive and with a short but very intense instrumental section. In the second part, a pulled and energetic synth solo takes centre stage, as well as continuous tempo changes that allow us to move from more aggressive to more symphonic moments, with slight Folk influences, an original and excellent track. A gentle guitar arpeggio opens “Don’t Be Afraid,” a long track of over 11 minutes characterised by a very warm and pathos-laden vocal. The tempo changes and Progressive textures are an added value for the track, which combines symphony and power, bringing the magical atmospheres of the 70s back to the present day with a marked personal touch. Long instrumental sections alternate with vocal ones, mixing different genres and styles of Prog, with beautifully crafted solos, engaging rhythms and refined melodies, there are all the ingredients that an epic track requires, surely the listener is pleasantly led through this space journey. The album’s shortest track “Wings” is an outstanding piano composition performed by Marco Grieco. A mix of modern classical music that softens the tone between the album’s most energetic tracks. The album ends with another epic track “Behind the Curtain,” which is over 13 minutes long and begins with heavy guitar riffs and fine keyboard work. tempo changes immediately characterise the song structure, with solo inserts and dynamic, expressive vocals alternating with instrumental parts. The long duration allows the band to enhance their technical skills through instrumental textures. A track that sums up the essence of Progressive music, through symphonic passages that alternate with others of a more heavy sound, always with a touch of refinement and involvement at the same time. As I always say when I listen to the albums of this project and those related to it, the technique of the artists and the quality of the compositions always manages to be at the highest level. This album also contains 7 tracks of pure Progressive, refined, energetic, Symphonic and Heavy when needed. Very intense vocal parts alternate with long, elaborate instrumental sections. A recommended listen for all lovers of good music, a true MASTERPIECE.
